With the sheer strength of his muscular body, Crusader Guy de Warenne overpowered his captors and fled the hell-hole of the Syrian prison. Yet he couldn't leave Damascus without rescuing the lovely violet-eyed "slave girl" who had saved his life by tenderly caring for his battle wounds. Never did he imagine that his damsel in distress would become a hot-blooded temptress who would torment his days and nights with every move of her innocent young form...

She is Leila, a raven-haired English beauty kidnapped in infancy, schooled in medicine by the wealthy physician who adopted her...and trained in the sensual delights of the harem. To Leila, the Crusader is a savage barbarian who ravaged her adopted homeland and ruthlessly carried her away to serve his own purposes. Yet, even in her fury, she is drawn to this man of unexpected tenderness and awakened to a raw, sensual power that will carry them both on a tumultuous journey into adventure, danger, and love.

Miriam Minger is the bestselling author of sweet to sensual historical romances that sweep you from Viking times to Regency England to the American West. Miriam is also the author of contemporary romance, romantic suspense, inspirational romance, and children's books. She is the winner of several Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Awards--including Best Medieval Historical Romance of the Year for The Pagan's Prize--and a two-time RITA Award Finalist for The Brigand Bride and Captive Rose.

Miriam Minger says: It's been a wonderful experience to have all my novels published as eBooks, but the greatest thrill for me as a writer is when readers take the time to let me know they enjoyed my stories...

"I have read hundreds if not thousands of books in my lifetime and not once have I ever been moved to comment on one until now. This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. I laughed. I cried. I remained at the edge of my seat devouring every single word you wove with this incredible story. I just wanted to let you know how deeply this story moved me and to thank you for creating it."

Wow. This one left me speechless, and thankful. I had done my job, which is to make you feel like you've dropped feet first into a world that captures your imagination and emotions so vividly you might be living and breathing the story. And that's one of the purest joys of reading, isn't it? I know it is for me, and it is my hope to continue to write books that make you live and breathe the adventure, laugh and cry, and that touch your heart.

"Soon he would be rumbling across a city swarming with soldiers in some sort of wagon with a drugged young woman who was none other than the sister of his worst enemy and the adopted daughter of the most renowned physician in the Arab Empire!"

I'm not going to try and recap the storyline, you can get enough of that from the blurb. I'm just going to use a few quotes to reflect my reading experience. The story begins just prior to Edward Longshanks returning from crusade and being crowned king upon his father's death. Our hero and one of Edward's most favored knights:

"Though he himself was not wholly satisfied, the aching fullness in his loins had been eased. There was nothing like anger to fuel a good bout of lovemaking."

"Don’t say another word, my lady, or I can assure you a sound slap on your delectable bottom will surely follow. That should entertain these good people.”

“In truth, my lady, I fear no battles but the one I wage myself. A virgin’s scent is a tempting trial for any man, but I have sworn to protect, not ravage you. Have I made myself clear?”

Medieval make-believe at its very worst. Where are all the priests, and does anyone go to chapel or confession?

So, he does manage to get her out of Syria and back to England, despite her constant attempts to escape and return to her home all by herself. Once safely in England, Leila's scheming brother has nefarious plans of selling marrying her off to some London merchant or some nonsense, but since " The Church deems such consent [by the female!] unnecessary for anyone older than fifteen his plans are foiled and for reasons Leila's married off to our hero instead and he takes her to his castle on the Welsh border. Where she still plots to escape and return to Damascus all by herself.

*head desk*

Oh, but the evil brother still plots to sell her off, but they'll have to get the marriage annulled first...

"But your annulment could take weeks to be approved by the Church, maybe longer."

Someone tell Henry VIII how easy it should have been :p

This is just a bunch of wallpaper medieval make-believe with no concept of the medieval mindset at all. And a final nod to one very nasty typo in the Kindle edition:

"...closer, and when they were almost at the gate, he tightly gripped the rains."

Rains?

Only recommended for the giggles at all the improbable plot twists, or those who like sexed up wallpaper romances.

Miriam Minger writes a romance with wonderful descriptions of Damacus and England, along with two main characters who are interesting in their own right. If you like exotic locations and a hero who is not afraid to admit his feelings, this book is for you.

Guy, the hero is a prisoner in Damacus, Syria while fighting in the Crusades. He has been beaten and is being held for ransom. Lelia is a daughter of an English woman who was a slave and then became a third wife to an important healer/doctor. Eve, her mother came along with her English husband to Damacus who was killed. She was sold on the slave market but rescued by the man who she came to love. Lelia is practicing to become a doctor in Syria with her stepfather. She goes to the prison where Guy is and helps with his recovery.

Soon Guy is amazed by Lelia, apparantly an English woman who speaks English buts lives among the "infidels". He thinks she is a slave and when he escapes, he will help her do the same.

From this point their adventure begins, with Lelia hating Guy for what he has done. He has taken her away from the only place she has known, away from her mother (who helped Guy) and the fact that she is attracted to Guy doesn't help matters.

Guy also tries to deny his attraction, only wanting to help Lelia arrive safely in England and be delivered to her brother, who is also Guy's enemy.

Their attraction grows, which Lelia tries to deny, whereas Guy soon realizes he can't let her go.The reader is taken on a journey along with watching lust and attraction turn into love.

The interaction between Guy and Lelia is enoyable and their love scenes and hot. A different type of romance novel awaits the reader with Captive Rose.

Let me preface this review by saying that upon first sight of this book, I was biased against it because of my...dislike of Fabio (the cover model for this edition). So it took me well over a year to actually want to read this book (and I solidly blamed Fabio for it). But after re-integrating myself into the world of Bodice Rippers recently (and I do love me some Bodice Rippers), I recalled that this particular book had been a gift from a wonderful, fellow Bodice Ripper-lover (and all-around Bodice Ripper Wikipedia). So I said to myself, "Self, it has been long enough. Read it, at least so you can tell K-Wiki that you did so and (possibly) enjoyed it."

Well, I read it - at last.

And hell, I loved it.

That being said, it wasn't as intense or as overwhelmingly heart-wrenching or passionate as some others that I've read in the past. But...it was solid, engaging, and flowed effortlessly from scene to scene. It also didn't feel as predicable as some, and during instances where I thought I could predict what happened next, I found myself well-pleased with the events, and felt that they were exactly what I would've hoped for as the story progressed.

So I read, and read, and read until I was at the very last page, filled with satisfaction, enjoyment, and smiling.

Aaahhh...THIS is what a GOOD read should always feel like.

Didn’t connect with hero/heroine

I have liked other books by this author but try as I might, did not like this one. The heroine was annoying, selfish and over dramatic and the hero wasn’t much better. Wasn’t really routing for either of them which was disappointing. Felt like I disliked the heroine from nearly the beginning and I was actually hoping they’d pack her up and send her back to Damascus so everyone could breathe a sigh of relief.

Oldie from 1991 resurrected as an ebook.
Downloaded free for Kindle
Guy was the saving grace of this story
Heroine got annoying towards the end.
Story dragged on about 50 pages too long.

Another well-written and researched novel with a setting between Syria and England about the daughter of a Holy land crusade captive daughter who is rescued through another crusader (some 20 years later) to be returned to England. Used to society with the future of marriage and practicing medicine, she finds the Damascus society far advanced to that of 1200 England and seeks ways to return. Although attracted to her rescuer, whom she ultimately marries mostly through coercion, Leila uses every (somewhat immature and shrewish actions despite her intelligence and talents ) to return to Syria. Lovely cover, interesting historical facts offsets Lady Leila's somewhat annoying repetitious contrary behaviors.

Guy and Leila's love

This second book in the series was elaborating. Opened my eyes to other religious practices and cultures. It was also very sexy and passionate. Guy and Leila, went back and forth with emotional feelings of admitting love for each other. They held back for different reasons. How they got together is a wonderful go- getting- fly- by- night- action ride, that will make you cry and laugh and love it. I loved this story. Three danger and emotional paragon with not knowing. What if? Read it and you'll see. Good luck!

Didn't finish. I just couldn't stomach the infidel parts. As a Hawaiian whose people were conquered and who have been thought less of because of our brownness, and knowing how colonizers think about anyone not white, I just couldn't deal with this Christian crap. That she was stolen from her home angered me. That her mother helped angered me even more. That he didn't care that she didn't want to leave angered me as well. I do not need to read a book in which the characters just keep angering me.

As the title states, this story will truly take your heart captive. The perilous journey that Leila and Guy endure to secure their happiness is breathtaking. Once again Miriam Minger takes her readers on a rich historical journey. It is filled with noble Knights and exotic tales of the East. There is treachery and deceit but also abundant love. You will be enchanted, mesmerized and fall in love with these beautiful characters as you turn the pages and watch the story unfold.

DNF-ed this book after MMC was having an explicit sex with a prostitue even when he lusted after FMC and they were all in the same house! It’s my biggest pet peeve when reading romance and the most hated plot device when infidelity (doesn’t matter both MMC and FMC have not established a solid relationship yet) inserts itself into the picture.

Such a beautiful story

I love this book. It has been a real joy reading, could not put it down. Loads of excitement and drama. The characters were good and the romance was hot without too much sex. I am going to read the third in the series, hope it is as good as the first two.

Everything terrible about Historical Romance as a genre can be found in this book. But hey, it was only 99¢ at Goodwill and will make a nice addition to my “historical” (pre-1995) Historical Romance collection.

Ok

I'm not into head strong heroines, who always have to be contrary. I have read other books of Miriam's, and liked them, but not so much this one.

4 stars simply for the enormous effort of writing a convincing, historical romance in today's day and age. The culture of the holy land, Syria in particular, very informative. Very spicy , nice !!

The girl is a English born, brought up in a conservative Muslim household. No oppression, no regret of living away from her native land. She is a trained physician , looking forward to practicing medicine and marrying a Muslim relative. Sees her life cut out and set in front of her.

Enter the hero , a valiant British knight, imprisoned in Syria. The girl treats his injuries in prison. He is quite smitten right from the start. He also thinks she is living in Syria against her wishes, as a slave and vows to rescue her. Her mother, incidentally thinks it best to pack off the girl with our hero to her birth place - England. So the hero takes her away by stealth !!

How they reconcile to their cultural differences is the rest of the story. The fact that they cant keep their hands off each other every time they come within touching distance obviously helps ;)

He declares his love somewhere in the middle of the story itself. I felt it was too soon, but it was a refreshing change from our regular M&B fare. The hero professes his love a million times after that. The girl is a little thick headed and doesn't seem convinced till the end.

Men being able to separate sex from love is an oft repeated concept. But here its the girl who manages this separation till the end. Sounds a little radical to me, for a historical. But then I chide myself for being too conservative !!

Spicy extras in the tale - she is a virgin but trained in the art of love making. She lives in a harem !! Her British brother has a long standing enmity with our hero.

The previous volume, Twin Passions was rather bad and typically I don't continue a series when that is true but this book was considerably better in writing, story and spelling.

The Captive Bride's series caught my attention because the first was a Viking historical romance. I tend to like the Viking stories, though there aren't nearly as many as the Highland stories. However, this volume is about an English knight who discovers an English woman who was born in a Damascan Harem. See Leila's mother Eve ended up married to a Damascan healer who accepted her daughter as his own. Leila then grew up learning his profession which was healing. Upon her marriage, she would become a physician. Mother and daughter have remained Christians but Leila's husband would not be.

Eve takes matters into her own hands and literally has her daughter kidnapped and taken back to "civilization" or England which Leila is not really that impressed with.

It is all quite the adventure and far better that the first book but still not stand out wonderful.

I rather enjoyed most of the story and I found Guy and Leila's belief that their respective religion/culture was superior interesting though I found it seemed the author took sides in this matter rather than going with it all being a matter of perspective.

Guy's seemingly good intentions to honor Eve's request for him to smuggle her daughter, Leila, out of Damascus in order for her to be with others of Christian beliefs, quickly frustrated and sickened me. Although I'm all for freedom from oppression, the manner at which it was done ticked me off. Leila had no voice or control over the life she loved and was torn from. Guy's actions in Canterbury were detestable even though Leila relented to the pleasure. After making the journey successfully, the cultural differences between Damascus and England were significant; Damascus seemingly serene, open minded, and enlightened compared to the rude, glutinous, and vile English culture. Leila was unable to see the life of oppression her mother was trying to free her from....of course in the end all was well. Guy and his "honorable" love for Leila grew on me and I finished this book with a smile on my face.

A beautiful romance between two persons from different world. As usual love overcomes all obstacles but this is not without difficulties.
Leila is a beautiful woman raised in a different culture than her birth right. That she thrives under it is a proof that she is very determined and strong in her believes. Unfortunately her mother does not share her opinion on the state of things. I don't know how to feel about Eve. She wants what she thinks is best for her daughter but does so quite selfishly without taking into account Leila's dreams and achievements. Hopefully, there is a happy ending for all in this book. And I have to say I was impressed by Guy's love and determination to win over Leila and her stubborn ideas and ways, but still respecting her for who she is.

I very much enjoyed this book. My soon to be husband bought me ten books at the local salvation army for $10. This was one of the books from his purchase. He knows how much I love to read and here where we live in parkersburg, wv we do not have a book store any more. Our local borders closed about a year ago. I can honestly say that this book is worth ten times more than the dollar he paid for it! It was so good I started reading it before bed and could not put it down untill I finished. I was up until almost five this morning reading. This is most definitly a good read! :)

I had tears running down my face as I got further in the book. Eventually I was affraid it wasn't going to have a happy ending to I read the epilogue before I finished the book. I was soooo happy that it was a happy ending and they had twins. One thing though, why guy? Why did she have the main male character named Guy??? it just made reading it a little weird, but definately a good book! it holds your attention to the very last word.

When I first started to read this book I couldn't get into it, so I set it aside. After a few weeks I went back to it and was able to sink in. I've read almost all of Miriam Minger's books, I love her writing, but this one was not one I would classify as a must have, I would have given it 3.5 stars but the don't allow halves. The main character "Leila" in my opinion lacked the maturity a women who was an aprentice and was going to be a physician herself should have had.
