This is the fifth book in the Isles of Scilly series and is best enjoyed following the previous books in the series.
Hannah Ellis spent many years working in childcare before deciding she'd like to write books. When she's not busy writing she likes to read, drink tea and eat chocolate. She also enjoys yoga and jogging.
I have read all the books in this series and I think I was quite glad that this appears to be the final one. I have been excited to learn more about the absent American brother, Jago, but I do believe that Ellis has exhausted all she could do with the plot.
Readers meet Jago as he flies to Scilly with his very chatty on-board neighbour, Sylvie. What Jago does not realise is that Sylvie is surprising her cousin, Lowen, with a visit. Lowen, who is one of Jago’s brothers. Through a turn of events, Sylvie spends more time with Jago instead of her cousin, leading to the inevitable feelings developing. (Note: Sylvie is not related to Jago at all!) The development of their relationship is quite slow in this novel as Ellis focuses on why Lowen reacts so negatively to Sylvie’s arrival.
It was this element that left me a bit disappointed in this story. The previous book in the series was all about Lowen so I think I was a bit disgruntled that he had even more air time in the book when I was so keen to learn more about Jago. I thought Ellis could have capitalised on Jago’s character more, instead of showing another side to Lowen’s personality and the reasons for his gruff reaction to Sylvie. It was almost as if Jago is brushed to one side as Sylvie attempts to reconnect with her long-distant cover and reminisce about their childhood.
Characters from the previous books all make a welcome return in this novel. Although this is a stand-alone, you definitely get a feel for all the different couples if you have read the other stories in order. It certainly added to the community feel that Ellis establishes on the island and once again I was pulled into the warmth of the Treneary family. Furthermore, it was lovely to see the matriarch, Mirren, so happy: to have all her boys return to the family home and be reunited after Jago’s lengthy absence. Mirren herself is a delightful character so I do wonder if there is material to add a cheeky mini-story that concludes all the possibilities suggested by the end of this book.
I liked this story but I did not fall in love with it as much as I had hoped. I wanted to see more budding romance between Jago and Sylvie and Jago dominate the narrative more than his brother. Whilst I did not feel resentful towards Lowen and quite liked this sub-plot, I think it meant the main relationship between the two characters faded into the background. I am sorry to see the end of this charming series that has been defined by warm characters and a fantastic setting, but do believe this plot has largely run its course. That being said, I would certainly recommend this series for an easy-going holiday read which will make you feel a part of the Treneary family.
With thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 5th book in the series and it is the turn of Jago Treneary. He has been mentioned in previous books, but this is the first time we get to meet him in person. He doesn't make a great first impression and a fellow traveller has decided he is a grumpy rude man, to be fair she isn't wrong.
Jago has been in New York working and has returned for the wedding of his brother. The last time he was home on the Scilly's it was for a funeral. He is nervous about returning and worries about how the other family members will react. Well, if you have read any of the previous books then you know pretty much how they are going to react. They will turn up in force and completely overwhelm him and anyone else who happens to be around.
I did mention a fellow traveller, her name is Sylvie. She has decided to visit the islands out of the blue. She has family here but they are estranged and have been out of touch for many years. Her sudden arrival isn't the best time and so she finds herself being shown around various places by Jago.
Once again it is such a pleasure to be back on the Scilly's with the Treneary's. They are a large family that sound like they are great fun and so welcoming. Jago finds himself wondering what to do with himself and Sylvie finds that she loves the idea of living by the sea. She does however have a home to get back to.
As I got to know the characters, well the new ones, the author also brought me up to date with what's going on with the others that I have already met. With such a large family there are always comings and goings and there is also the odd quarrel. Things are not always easy for all the family, some hold their emotions deeper than is good for them.
As well as the banter and the good humour there are some more serious developments, some of which I was aware of from previous books, but they are expanded on. This felt like the right way to develop them further and it worked so well within the context of this book.
This is another fabulous book and series. I am a little sad that the author is leaving the Trenearys for a while to move on to others things, but I do hope there will be a chance for another chance to catch up with them again. Great for fans who enjoy contemporary fiction and romance novels. A warm and welcoming family in a gorgeous location and a wonderful storyline to snuggle down and read. One I would definitely recommend.
It has been a privilege to be one of the first to journey back to the Isles of Scilly for the latest instalment with the Treneary family. Right from the start of the book, I warmed immediately to Jago and Sylvie and the clever way in which Hannah has tied their stories in with the previous books in the series felt like you were visiting old friends alongside new ones. This is feel good story that is beautifully set and I couldn’t put it down!
I love a book series and, having read both the Hope Cove and Loch Lannick series by the same author, Hannah has a real gift for building solid stories that are stand alone yet weaving in complex relationships and varying viewpoints throughout the series allowing a deeper understanding of the stories with clever layering. I’m really hoping that this isn’t the last visit to Scilly - I’d love to hear from Mirren as a protagonist personally - but this really has been another fantastic trip to the Islands.
Jago Treneary is the mystery Treneary brother. All of his brothers got some early bird page time but all we know about Jago is that he's been in America for the last four books and he and older brother Lowen had a somewhat fractious relationship growing up. Now it's finally time for Jago take the spotlight and it feels the most weighty because Lowen's happily ever after is coming apart at the seams.
I really felt for Jago and Sylvie. A chance meeting sets them up with someone who could be the one, only they both have family issues to resolve and it happens to be the same family, because Jago's brother Lowen is Sylvie's cousin by his birth mother. Don't worry, there's nothing squicky, but one person is uncomfortable and I'll give you no prize for guessing who.
If it wasn't for the family drama it would be a very straightforward boy meets girl so it sometimes felt like their relationship was simplified to make sure the series was tied up well. This meant that I didn't get a good grasp of Jago and Sylvie as people, but I honestly prefer it to the alternative where a series doesn't get a good ending.
Best enjoyed as the end of the series, especially after reading Lowen's book, though it can stand okay on its own. I know this is the last book about the Treneary boys and that makes me sad, because I'd love to see them live the success they've built, which is how you know it was a lovely ending. Once again, we're left with a heartfelt story about the importance of family and the reminder that very little is absolutely good or bad when you look at it from someone else's perspective.

My Opinion
I am loving this series, being back with the Treneary family is like coming home to old friends. Jago doesn't make the best first impression but as a reader you will quickly warm to him. With a warm, welcoming family there is a lot to draw the reader into the book and like me you will be sad to leave when the book finishes.
Whilst Jago and Sylvie are new characters and so the book can be read as a standalone, the book would be more enjoyable if read in the published order as you will know the background on the other characters that are mentioned. This was another fantastic trip to the Isles of Scilly and I hope that it is not my last visit.
A great contemporary family drama and romance, On which I highly recommend you take a chance! For my complementary copy, I say a huge thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review.
Another story involving the Treneary clan One for which I'm a big fan. The island setting is brilliant to explore, Making me want to visit more and more.
Visiting family after being apart for years Can come with drama, tears and fears. Two people travelling to do this now Sit on a plane and meet somehow.
Jago Treneary is returning home, to stay - perhaps, After more than three years have elapsed. He's unsure of how he feels or how they'll react Nothing is certain and that is a fact.
On the plane a chatty passenger keeps talking Unfortunately on there he can't keep walking. She Sylvie who is going to surprise a relation Unsure how she'll be greeted but hoping with elation.
When she ends up at his family home that night, His Mum takes pity on her accommodation-less plight. When the person she's come to see is too busy Jago acts as guide as the islands highlights they see.
A story of families with secrets and pain, Where only opening up will help them heal again. Choices and decisions, love and romance, How will they decide whether to take a chance?
The interactions between the family members feel so real, With drama and turmoil that you can also feel. Life changing decisions need to be made somehow That will impact on their relationships in future and now.
This is book 5 in the Isles Of Scilly series. You can read this book as a standalone story, but I’d urge anyone to read the whole series in order. It really is a beautiful set of stories that flow effortlessly in to each other. Hannah Ellis has a real talent for writing a charming and captivating series of books.
It was lovely to be back on the Isles Of Scilly and especially with the Treneary family, who yet again are a family who ooze fun and love.
Jago and Sylvie are both returning to an uncertain welcome on the island. I liked them both as characters and was especially impressed with how Hannah Ellis wove their stories into the main body of what we already know about the Treneary family and the island.
I’m sad to see that this is the last planned book in this series. I’ve enjoyed each book. They have all had something special about them. I’ve loved the warm and friendly community feel, the stunning setting and the heartwarming romance, all written with great love for the characters. I truly hope this isn’t a permanent goodbye to the Isles Of Scilly and the Treneary family.
This time, the person arriving on St Mary’s Island is not a stranger. Well, not entirely. Sylvie is Lowan’s cousin who wants to surprise him and rekindle their relationship. She gets to meet the entire Treneary family and is just getting comfy with Jago when she realises that Lowan is ignoring her. After a spat between Lowan, Sylvie, and Jago, she is hurt and confused and breaks up with Jago, and decides to return to London. Why Lowan’s behaviour takes a turn for the worse, and what happens to Jago and Sylvie is for the readers to find out.
The book is a standalone but is definitely more enjoyable when you have read the others in the series. This time there is an additional emotional connection with Lowan, making the book more interesting. The storyline is good and with Beth and Trystan getting married, all loose ends and neatly tied. The story moves at a good pace, and the multiple events make sure the reader is engrossed throughout. Kudos to the author!
An Unexpected Guest is a feel-good book, just like the others in the series. It comes highly recommended!
A fantastic book to wrap up the series! I know some complaints in the reviews have been that it focuses too much on Lowen from the previous book and we should have seen his story wrapped up there BUT I kind of disagree. Our heroine Sylvie is a big piece of Lowens past and watching how that dynamic plays out and affects her relationship with our hero Jago was pretty crucial to wrapping up the series as a whole. Hannah Ellis does a great job of writing a series that truly feels connected and like a big continuation which I love. So seeing this final romance come together while at the same time the family members who have been estranged mend their relationships was perfectly woven together. I loved it!
Hannah Ellis has the magical touch when writing her books as she makes you feel that you know the family personally and you are transported to the location of the books!
The Isles of Scilly is a wonderful heart warming series about the Treneary family and the Unexpected Guest is sadly the final story within this collection but Jago and Sylvie’s story was definitely my favourite and I was hooked from the first page!
Mixed emotions as sad to leave the Treneary family and the Isles but excited to find out where Hannah takes us next ☺️☺️
What an unexpectedly enchanting book. So different but exactly the same as the other 4 in the series. So well written you can feel you on the Isles of Scilly. That part has made me want to visit there. There were very hard parts to deal with but the ending was unbelievable. I can recommend you read all the series then you get the full story. Thank you Hannah Ellis for writing your lovely books x
I really loved reading this book the fifth in the series. Lowen has to face his past when his cousin arrives to see him. Jago arrives back from America and meets Lowen's cousin. I didn't want this story to end but loved the ending. Hannah Ellis has done it again by writing another lovely story.
Two people with the same summer vacations but different conceptions of the experience. Just because you both go to the same place doesn't mean both your memories are fond. Good family story about how much family sticks together and supports each other through everything.
Each book seemed to resolve a brothers life. Each book also added in more info on characters from the previous book. This last book. Just ends. It leaves you wondering. And with no new book coming out, it leaves you wondering. Cute story, but disappointed with where it left off.
Being back on the Isles of Scilly with the Treneary family is like coming home to visit the family. Catching up with all the news whilst getting to know Jago and Sylvie has been great. I love how welcoming Mirren is and felt like Sylvie would have felt like one of the family really quickly. The descriptions as always of the Islands sound beautiful and I can just imagine being part of the community. Hannah Ellis writes such compelling characters and I’ve loved being back with this family. I’m hoping that this, the 5th in the series, isn’t the last.
I have loved every word of this brilliant series.. I am already missing the characters and The Isles of Scilly.. it was good the bonus part was about Lowen, because he has been the thread through the whole series.
Superb series finale. This is Jago's story. Love how these new characters nestle in perfectly with the ones we know and love. Best read as part of the series- questions from past books are answered. A fantastic end to a fabulous series.
I loved the story and how everything came together. It was hard to put this book down. Even though you see how things are going to turn out, I wish there was more to the ending.
Really enjoyed reading this book. It pulls you into it in such a way that I read it in just one day. Great holiday read and it's seriously made me think about visiting the Scilly Isles.
I enjoyed this book as well and I will continue with the next. I am a retired teacher and I have always thought that romantic stories are great! Thank You for writing them!
I love these Isles of Scilly books about the Treneary brothers finding love. I'm sad that this is the last book in the series. All the supporting characters are great characters. And the desciptions of the Scilly Isles make me want to visit these islands.
This series has become my favorite of Hannah’s. I find myself longing to visit the Isles so badly! I loved getting to learn more about Lowen and his difficult past, and come to love Jago.
Enjoyed immensely reading the whole series and about the Family and the area. Each book was super and had great storylines. Couldn't wait to read the next one. Hannah Ellis you are a fantastic writer.
