The above-quoted exchange is one of the few moments of levity in this otherwise dark volume - and I don't mean because the majority of the story takes place at night - as our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler suffers through a noir plot that would be right at home in Hard Case Crime paperback novels. (Even the subtitle Down Among the Dead Men would be appropriate on any book authored by Chandler, Hammett, and/or Westlake.) It appears that Peter Parker's beloved guardian Aunt May has been violently abducted from her apartment, and unusually Spider-Man has to work solo - he is mostly insultingly rebuffed any assistance by the Avengers, in one of those less believable plot moments (I think that Captain America would've stepped up to help, owing to the long-established content of his character) - to investigate this truly personal incident. Spidey ends up tracking down and confronting two of his longtime nemeses, resulting in a particularly harsh violent finale AND a shocking cliffhanger ending related to his long-guarded secret identity. Bring on volume 2!

I didn’t like all of the double crossing and the civilians confusing Spider-Man for a bad guy. Gimme a break! This is DARK and ended on a bad note for me. I won’t be reading the rest of the volumes.

Серията Рицарите на Marvel е анонсирана като място за самостоятелни минипоредици с нетрадиционен подход, които ще накарат читателите да преосмислят любимите си герои, но лично аз не останах особено впечатлен нито от сценария, нито от арта на този албум. Едно че историята от едва 4 бр. свърши преди да е започнала, при това с отворен край - сиреч до никъде, второ че издиша в сравнение с DC комиксите, адресирани към малко по-зряла аудитория, каквито се предполага да са и тия... Но-о нали съм добро читателско прасе - 3,5/5.

Много го превъзнасят в допълнителните материали този комикс. Да - артът е добър, но не виждам с какво толкова е по-многопластов от стандартната марвелска тупалка. Има някакъв нефелен опит - с отвличането на лелята, с няколко панела отношения на Спиндерман с Мери Джейн и подбудите на Лешояда, но всичко това е бошлаф работа.
Не знам колко са били затъпели комиксите на Марвел, че този да е бил на нов, по-високо ниво тогава, а и май не държа да разбирам :).

Когда издательство Marvel запускали в конце 90-х импринт Marvel Knights, никто еще не собирался топить рынок в альтернативных лимитках про скелет с тентаклями. Целью проекта было создание более взрослого контента внутри канона. Более взрослого, дерзкого, с новой перспективой, поэтому персонажей брали попроще - Сорвиголову, Карателя, Чёрную Пантеру. Весной 2004 года, за несколько месяцев до выхода второго фильма от Сэма Рэйми, было решено встряхнуть еще и старину Питера. Подписали на этот скорбный труд Марка Миллара, который уже показал себя большой звездой на параллельных импринтах. На Ultimate Marvel, где он активно ваял про «Ultimate X-Men», «Ultimate Fantastic Four» и просто «The Ultimates», а также на Epic. Именно там они с художником Терри Додсоном впервые шокировали паркеровский фэндом, переписав в лимитке «Trouble» ориджин героя и представив будущую тётю Мэй Рейли в качестве рыжей 17-летней девчонки.
И вот теперь Миллар и Додсон подписались делать для Marvel Knights новый онгоинг. Всего 12 выпусков, но этого хватило, чтобы канон поплыл под градом смелой деконструкции. Шотландского козла пустили в огород, и он мгновенно осквернил могилу дяди Бена и вычеркнул из списка живых тётю Мэй.

С нищебродом и пролетарием Паркером, который вдобавок отказывается раскрывать свою личность, они не хотят иметь никаких дел. Фелисия Харди - персонаж мутный, хотя с ЭмДжей она ведёт себя очень тактично. У каждого злодея наоборот своя сентиментальная агенда, что совершенно не оправдывает той кровавой бани, которая начинается после каждого столкновения. В этом комиксе почти впервые показывают, что после каждой схватки улица буквально усеяна трупами случайных прохожих, а самого Питера может сбить, например, машина.

LE: Review for a slightly different collected edition that includes Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1-6 (so vol. 1 + half of vol. 2 "Venomous").
Maybe not the best intro to Spider-Man for a newcomer.
A local publisher started a subscription series with a 60 volumes collection of Ultimate Spider-Man and this is the first volume to come out. I only know Spiderman from the animated series and the movies (same for all Marvel characters) and I was curious to discover the hero in printed format. I had no idea where to start, but I was curious, so I gave it a try.
Unfortunately, my first impression is not a positive one. And that's because the series does not start with the origin or one of the first adventures, but right after a villain has discovered the identity of Spiderman. Instead of being a proper omnibus, this version includes vol. 1 - Down among the dead men + half vol. 2 - Venomous, and a later volume, titled Last Stand, will include the rest of vol. 2 + vol. 3. So it's not even a complete story.
The art - I hate. I know it gets a lot of praise, but I just can't stand the style - too plastic, airbrushed and oversaturated. The characters lack expressivity and distinctiveness - for example, MJ looks identical to Rachel Summers.
Maybe I'm not the right audience for this IP, or maybe other volumes will change my mind.

Mark Millar can have some really great ideas, but a lot of his comics do come across as pitches for Hollywood.
And that's not a shot at him. Make that money. But it's nice to see a actually decently written story.
That's not to say this isn't dark/edgy. Because plenty of people die, everyone is saying goddamn, shit, and more every other line. So it has the Millar edge no doubt. But it also has a Peter Parker pushed to his limit, ousted, and haunted. And Millar smartly makes Peter push back and get his inner thoughts, leading to some great fights overall. Also electro and vulture actually doing work was interesting. The humor was hit or miss, sometimes I did laugh, sometimes I cringed at out outdated or sexist it was.
Overall, it's a solid read for a darker more screwed up Spider-Man story. I enjoyed it for that, even if the edge was bleeding through thick at points. A 3 out of 5.

Joe Quesada has a reputation for ruining Spider-Man due to One More Day but he actually started with a really good idea with the Marvel Knights series. This one opens with Spider-Man finally beating the Green Goblin, the disappearance of Aunt May, and other shenanigans. Peter is terrified at his secret identity being busted and it's fascinating that Quesada could go to such lengths for a plot that he dismissed.

Ehrlicherweise war das hier zwar ein kurzes, vergnügliches Leseereignis, welches mir an manchen Charakteren auch mal eine andere Seite aufgezeigt hat und welches mit einem interessanten Mystery-Fall startete, über einen unbekannten Gegenspieler, der scheinbar einiges über Spider-Man weiß, ehe er Tante May entführt, doch mittlerweile fühlt es sich für mich so an, als würde ich immer und immer und immer wieder die gleiche Spider-Man Geschichte lesen.
Spider-Man lebt sein Leben, bis ein manischer Feind alles droht kaputt zu machen. MJ und Tante May müssen schnell die Szenerie verlassen und obwohl es eigentlich besser für sie wäre dann von Spider-Man fern zu bleiben, muss man ihm doch irgendwie helfen, was dann darin gipfelt, dass sie sich in Gefahr bringen. Und am besten nicht nur sich, sondern Spider-Man direkt mit dazu, sodass dieser von Black Cat gerettet werden muss, welche nicht nur convenient zur richtigen Zeit auftaucht, sondern auch dauerhaft in jedem Panel so dargestellt wird, dass auch ja ihr Hintern oder ihre Brust gut zur Geltung kommen.
Aber gut... ich bin schon recht froh, wenn in einem Spider-Man Comic auch andere Helden einen kleinen Gastauftritt haben, so wie hier die Avengers oder X-Men. Das lockert alles immer ein wenig auf und gibt einem das Gefühl einer großen Welt, die sich nicht nur auf den titelgebenden Protagonisten stützt.
Was mir gen Schluss auch sehr gut gefallen hat, war das offene Ende, welches schon Lust auf mehr macht, auch wenn man als Leser*in bereits weiß, dass es nur eine weitere/andere Reihe/Ausgabe braucht, damit alles wieder beim Alten ist.

Spider-Man Volume 1: Down Among The Dead Men collects issues #1 - #4.
Spider-Man has grown up! Down Among The Dead Men follows Peter Parker in his 40'sish. He is a teacher now and Mary-Jane has gotten famous. Honestly Peter Parkers normal life was quite boring (and not much explanation went into explaining what happened before the events of this comic).
The art style was not the best, at times it seemed like their was too much going on on the page. I got distracted from the actual story and its purpose at times.
The saving grace was the story line. I found it really interesting as to how a superhero would react if anyone found out their secret identity and how they handle it.At times it did seem to jump around and have some jumps in logic which I did find annoying but they were easily explained later on.
The main reason why you would read this volume is the story and how a superhero would react with his secret identity being found out.

Ayer pude comenzar y terminar de leer éste cómic, y es de lo mejor que he leído por parte de Marvel
Voy a darle 5 estrellas, ya que a rasgos muy generales, me parece un trabajo muy completo, y he disfrutado bastante de leerlo.
En un principio el arte visual no era de mi agrado, pero en las siguientes partes se cambió por completo el estilo de dibujo, y pienso que fue la mejor decisión que pudieron haber tomado.
El eje central de la historia es la salida de closet de Spiderman como héroe, ya que alguien ha descubierto su verdadera identidad, y por consecuencia de esto, han secuestrado a la tía May
Aprovecho que he mencionado a la tía May, para decir que es uno de los personajes mas tiernos que he tenido el placer de conocer, solo quiero darle un abrazo a la abuelita.
De igual manera, se presentan a muchos villanos, como el Buitre y Electro, un equipo bastante interesante, y que espero volver a leer.
También la gata negra, quien es una copia descarada y directa de Catwoman, pero algo malo tenía que tener.
Igual con Búho, que bueno es horrendo y malvado, y ya está.
Por otro lado, Yekaterina la mutante prostituta cambia forma me pareció super creativa y original, sumando el plus de la inclusión de la comunidad LGBT en un mercado tan cerrado como los superheroes.
Al final el conflicto no se resuelve, y te obliga a leer más sobre esta historia, esto puede ser positivo o negativo, dependiendo de que tanto te haya gustado la primera parte.

I you want to see a reckless, beaten Spider-Man, look no further. It's a breath of fresh air to not have him crack jokes while running circles around his enemies. The artwork is pretty too.
Peter Parker has moved on with his life. Unfortunately, his new job and home can't ensure the safety of his only living relative. Aunt May is kidnapped by someone who knows Spider-Man's secret identity.

This was a rather odd book in the sense that I get how it was a Spider-Man story but I'm not sure what made it a Marvel Knights story at the same time. Is it because of the slightly grimmer consequences? But Spider-Man's life has always been about keeping his loved ones safe as they tend to get threatened by villains one way or another. Or was it because there was sort of an investigative portion of the story that only really consisted of trying to get information from The Owl?
It's not a bad story, but I just don't quite get the branding.

The art on this one is so much better than the last Spider-Man I read. Anyway, as usual, things just aren't going Peter's way. Someone is into his secret identity and has kidnapped his aunt to get to him, just as he's always feared. He spends most of the book blundering around trying to find the culprits and getting into more trouble with no conclusion to the Aunt May situation. The stakes are high and I'm eager to see where things go from here.

Die erzählte Geschichte wird brillant kurzweilig und in atemberaubender künstlerischer Qualität präsentiert. Auch die zusätzlichen Infoseiten trumpfen wieder mit einem lesenswerten Bericht zur Geschichte der "Marvel Knights"-Serie und Konzeptzeichnungen auf. Ein klasse Band der Reihe, auch wenn der einzige Nachteil darin besteht, dass die Geschichte mit einem Cliffhanger endet und man daher unbedingt wissen möchte, wie sich dieser Erzählstrang weiter entwickelt.

Loved this, a sinister psychopath somewhere targets Peter Parker and he knows everything...suddenly Aunt May is taken violently but by whom..beside himself with worry spider goes through a very violent hell..pt 1 of a great story....I’m off for pt 2 now..can’t wait.

If you take under consideration all the times they discussed his identity among a crowd of people I am surprised it took so long for someone to abduct his aunt😂😂.
I loved the story, all the familiar villains and the agony of the search. Can't wait for the next volume.

This story is taking some interesting turns, especially at the end there, and I like the way that suspense is being built. The art was pretty good in this too; overall an enjoyable story!

Honestly it wasn't a horrible story except the writer decided to throw his political nonsense right in the middle of the story. Totally unnecessary, distracting, and annoying. nice artwork.

It was fun. I mostly read it for the Black Cat content. Her appearances were good, but didn't make up much of the book considering she is on the cover.

Such a brilliantly violent story. Nice plot twists and gorgeous art. Looking forward to next one.

Λοιπόν δεν το περίμενα αυτό από κόμικ της σειράς του Σπάιντερμαν! Κινηματογραφική πλοκή, ήρωες με ανθρώπινα αισθήματα και αντιδράσεις, πλοκή που κόβει την ανάσα, απλά τέλειο!
