Effortless ... a heartfelt second chance romance
Jennifer Van Wyk has written a beautiful, heartfelt, sweet second chance romance which I couldn't get enough of. EFFORTLESS is the second standalone in a series of novels centered on the Lake family of Red Oak, Tennessee. This time it's Cash Lake's story and the woman he's never forgotten, even though it's been almost sixteen years since he last saw her.
Two cancelled flights have Cas and Hadley sharing drinks, a meal, and then an unforgettable night together. The next morning Cash wakes Hadley no longer being there. For the next sixteen years she is never far from his mind, so imagine his surprise when she walked into the town's only diner. Hadley and her daughter, Brooklyn, have come to live in Red Oak and Cash couldn't be happier. Looking at Brooklyn Cash begins to wonder if she is his daughter, is she?
Hadley has escaped a life in Chicago for peace, freedom, and a new beginning. Coming from a strict upbringing, a life already sorted for her, and parents who never showed any sign of care, affection or love, Hadley is determined to give her daughter everything she didn't experience from her parents. I loved Hadley, she was a strong, sweet, caring woman, a wonderful mother, and the best pie maker around. Cash is a true southern gentleman, a hard worker, loves his family, protective, determined, and utterly devoted to Hadley. Even though the connection they initially felt all those years ago is still there, Cash and Hadley don't automatically rush into where they left off. They slowly build on the friendship that was there when they first met, falling deeper for each other the more time they spend together. There are plenty of laughs and a few tears along the way, yet they are perfectly matched to each other.
EFFORTLESS was such an enchanting story to read. I adored both Cash and Hadley, they had a spark, a chemistry and a draw that had me wanting to know more about their story, which meant the pages turned very easily. Alongside Cash and Hadley are some of the best secondary characters I have come across. Cash's siblings are simply hilarious, their antics and jokes had me in stitches, but it was their care and affection for one another that really had me sighing. His mother is the kind of mum that everyone wants in her life ... Who would have thought that Granny Basketball was a thing? I loved the friendship that blossomed between Brooklyn and Cash's nephew Cody, they were like two little peas in a pod. The biggest surprise was the friendship that Hadley maintained with er ex-husband Trotter. OMG, I loved that man and his partner.
If you'e a lover of second chance romances, sweet heroines and swoonworthy heroes, then this is the book for you. Laughs, desires, hilarious family members, Jennifer brings them all. EFFORTLESS is another wonderful read from Jennifer.
