The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society is a middle grade/YA story that is written by Terry Overton. My 11 year old and I read this book together and we both enjoyed it. This book is set in the year 2031. The government that is in place expects complete service from their citizens. We see four orphaned teenagers, Kahn, Jairus, Asher, and Casey, originally members of a Secret Society group, have been meeting secretly for several years.

The group meets to read and pray together. They want to be able to find clues that can help them in the future. My son and I had a nice conversation on how they were trying to preserve their faith and not get caught up in the conformity. However when they are followed by another teen, can they trust him?

My son and I both enjoyed this book. The author is a wonderful story teller - we cannot wait until the next book in the series. While this is geared toward middle grade readers, adults can enjoy it too.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

“The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society” is a sprawling dystopian YA novel set in the year 2031. The World Force, a military totalitarian group, has taken over the United States and turned the country upside down, requiring complete subservience from its citizens. The organization banned the reading of any books and Bibles and also outlawed attendance at churches and schools. In a secluded underground tunnel deep into the mountains of Virginia, four orphaned teenagers, Kahn, Jairus, Asher, and Casey, originally members of a Secret Society group, have been meeting secretly for several years.

There within the calcites and flowstones of the cave, they commune together, pray and read the Bible eventually creating a bond stronger than most families. They manage to collect lost books and read them together, clues and tools that could help them in the future. During a precarious and worrisome period, constant rumors of spies and enemies solidly ring in their ears and their loyalty is one day tested when an outsider follows Kahn to the secret cavern with hopes to be part of the society. How long can the group manage to hide from the World Force organization? Are there others like them who would help create a bigger community? Can they make a better life for everyone?

Terry Overton is a deft storyteller. Every word and every sentence rings true and holds the attention of a reader on every page. Vividly described and imagined, the text ping pongs at an even pace allowing readers to take in the sceneries that the book describes- a futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control is maintained with the illusion of a perfect society. Destined to captivate young readers and adults alike, “The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society” will ignite the love for reading.

The protagonists have admirable personalities. Their love, compassion, and allegiance will motivate young teens to emulate their character in these modern and uncertain times. Storytelling is as old as time itself, and it’s not only for pure escapist entertainment but also to pass essential truths, knowledge, and wisdom. Here, the author has succeeded in this by embedding an important message in an enjoyable story. Taut as a rope, Terry Overton offers an unmissable five-star gala rich in notably contemporary energy that will have you swooning in no time.

Daughter age 7-I liked this book. It was fun. But the starting was kind of boring. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Son age 10-I really liked it. I think it was fun too and in some parts it was kind of funny. And I think one of the characters was being kind of suspicious in some parts. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Daughter age 12-I think it was fun and I liked how they thought they were going to get taken over by the World Force because I thought the same thing. And I'm wondering what they're going to do. And I liked all the discoveries and stuff that they made. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Daughter age 14-I liked how they managed to survive on their own and figured out how to do those things since they were kids. I don't understand how they trusted a new character so quickly because he acted kind of suspicious. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mom-I enjoyed the survival lessons, since that's something we also try to teach our kids-how to survive in emergencies. Some parts were kind of slow for me, but as you can see, my kids loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Average of 4.6 stars for us.

This is a great story for middle school and up as we journey through what it may be like when the world is taken over. Can you imagine being all alone as a young child and find out that what you use to call The United States is now run by those who want to control everything? The author paints a picture of survival and banning together in order to survive. When we are introduced to this group of young children I was in awe of how structured they were. They shared food, looked out for each other, read books together and attended their own church. I was impressed with how easy it was to find myself waking beside them as they went for food rations each day.

Each child has something of value for the group and it was interesting to see how they figured out how to survive each day and keep their faith. I really enjoyed their time in church as they went through scriptures and talked about the different people in the Bible. I liked how one of the kids said, “ I think people forgot about the important things and were not paying attention.” We do that today with our busy lives and forget about what is really important. People stop going to church and before you know it the world is changing from God first to worldly things. The author does a great job of sharing God’s Word through these characters who are very wise. They see how things have changed and want to try to get back to the way God wants us to live. He desires us to worship him, love each other and share the Word with others.

The story is full of surprises and secret documents that will help the group in the days ahead. The author leaves readers with a cliffhanger and I will be anxiously awaiting for the next book in this exciting series set in the future.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

What I think you should know:
The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society is the first book in a series by Terry Overton. It is Young Adult Christian Dystopian fiction that is appropriate for Middle grades and higher. It is set in a Dystopian version of Virginia around 2031.

What I think about this book as the Mom of a YA Reader:
This is a fun and unique book with a great group of diverse characters. I love how the author included a variety of disabilities as well as races in the small group of characters that are in the first books. While the book is dystopian fiction it does include some valuable lessons for teens . I think that this would be a fun book to read as a book for a book club.

Bonus for me:
A character with a Celiac like illness who is not portrayed as weird and is readily embraced!

What I think about this book:
This book caught my attention from the first page. Overton did a magnificent job of creating a dystopian world that will be young adult friendly, but still entertaining for other readers. I loved the variety of characters, even with a small group it had a character who most would relate to in some way or another. I love dystopian fiction so it is really nice to have a Christian Friendly version that I can read and recommend to others. My only complaint is that the book is not nearly long enough. I can’t wait to see what happens next to our small band of Heroes.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society is such an entertaining read! I expect young readers will enjoy this unique and thought-provoking story.

I enjoyed getting to know the young, diverse characters and their unique personalities and abilities/disabilities. They care about each other, and it feels genuine. I’ve loved books and reading ever since I was a very young child, so the thought of the freedom to read freely being taken away by government is eerie. This book displays that well and really got me to thinking.

Dystopian stories are not my jam, but this fits so taut in this particular story. And the Christian themes make it purposeful and meaningful. I am so pleased the characters read Scripture and prayed in this story and it didn’t feel forced or ‘preachy.’ I’m also not fond of cliffhangers, but I must admit it makes me anticipate the next book in the series!

First Line: Kahn was being watched.

I don’t know that I have seen many dystopian books for middle schoolers, so Terry Overton may be filling a gap with her new series The Underground Book Readers. Readers may make connections between the story and real life - in particular a disease that kills many. I was amazed at the resourcefulness of the teens who are the main characters in The Secret Society. The story starts with a young girl (possibly 10 years old) finding the 4 friends who have formed the Underground Book Readers Secret Society.Through the story we learn that some of the characters were teased/bullied for their differences - one character has “dark skin” another had to deal with the nickname of “Aspie.” Together the kids form a family around their bonds of reading and loss. They all lost all of their older family members either to the disease or being “disappeared” by the World Force. The World Force abolished schools and churches and got rid of all books (except for the ones the kids have been able to gather from the trash). When we meet the members of the society, they have been gathering for about 4 years. When Leens joins them they are able to determine that she was probably left on her own about the age of 4.
There are parts of the story that are almost unbelievable and yet God has created us as resourceful beings. As an adult I found some of the aspects of the story to be disturbing - only because I could see them actually happening.
Overton ends the book with a bit of a cliff hanger so I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I want to know what happens next for these (now) 6 Christian kids.
The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society would make a great addition to a K-12 Christian school library. It would also be appropriate for a middle school reading list or homeschool curriculum.
I received a complimentary copy of The Secret Society. This is my honest review.

I am giving this book 4.5 stars.

This was the most unexpectedly enjoyable read I might have ever picked up. I liked getting to know the characters, even if they were a little one-dimensional at times. But, as this book was intended for a younger audience, I wasn't expecting too much.

One *tiny* gripe I had with this book was the punctuation errors, most noticeably the run-on sentences and lack of commas. I had the Kindle version, so I don't know if it was just this edition that had the errors, but that's just what I noticed.

Edit: I thought of another gripe. The dialogue felt clunky at times, but that might have been because it's for a younger audience.

Can't wait to read the next book!

yay!

Absolutely loved this! Underground book, reading, secret society? How could you possibly go wrong with such a great concept. It’s well executed, well written, and the characters are delightful. Even though it’s written for a younger audience, I, as an adult, absolutely adored it and wish I had some thing like this when I was younger. Now I get to share it with my daughter, even though. He may not even appreciate it as much as I did.

This book hooked me quickly. I couldn't put it down. As a mom, it's terrifyingly believable. But it was also a lot of fun.

I wanted to pre-read it before sharing it with my 9 year old because it's for 9-18 year olds, and that's a pretty wide span.
I am comfortable sharing it when we finish what we're currently reading.

The concept of all the parents and older siblings being dead or taken away, leaving the younger set alone in their homes with a central food station offering one meal per day will be the only issue we might struggle with. But a great launch pad for discussion.

There are a couple of 'scary' moments but they aren't really scary and literally only last a moment, so no worries there. A guard in the wrong spot, a stranger appears where he shouldn't... Stuff like that.

Overall, I think the story offers encouragement of kids being resilient and seeds of faith and life skills planted early being extremely valuable assets. Both concepts are as good for parents to pay attention to as the entertainment value of the book is for kids.

I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be on the launch team for this book and can't wait for book 2!

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit and chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.

When I saw the plotline for this book, I was instantly intrigued. I started it with high hopes, and came out of it with mixed feelings.

I did really enjoy this book. The author did a decent job with the world-building and the dialogue. I loved how close the friends were and how they cared for each other and looked out for one another. And the idea of a secret underground book society that have their own underground library is pretty cool. However, there were certain elements that I felt was lacking, including character development. While we get to know some of the characters’ backgrounds, their personalities themselves were underdeveloped and I never really felt like I connected with any of them.

I really did enjoy reading about this world and secret society, and I especially loved how the author incorporated faith into the story. Overall, this book has a lot of potential, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I had received a copy of the book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.

I have read many books by Terry Overton, and I have come to really enjoy all the books I have read. Terry Overton has a new series that is Young Adult Christian Fiction Dystopian. The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society is Book 1 in the new series. I was honored to have recently read it.

The year is 2031, yes in the future. The book has 4 main characters: Kahn, Jairus, Asher, and Casey. They have formed a secret Society and have been meeting for many years Underground. They have lost their Parents and Older Siblings but are searching for them. They 4 Original Members of the Secret Society have formed a strong bond and are now a "family". They begin to find Clues, Tools and Documents that would help them to possibly find their family members. The also know that World Force Organization has taken over the world and wonder how many are hiding from the Soldiers. They do not like that the World Force organization has banned books and churches and decide to have their own while in their Secret Society. The 4 of them begin to make plans and dreams of creating a new Settlement and they work tirelessly planning, making discoveries and more in anticipation of one day this coming to be. Will the Secret Society crew grow their Society once the World Force completely takes over? Will their plans and dreams come to be?

I am not one who normally likes this type of genre of a book, but I am HOOKED. The storyline kept me intrigued from beginning to end. I finished the book within 4hrs. I really LOVE how Kahn, Jairus, Asher and Casey formed a solid bond that they become "family" to one another. the Secret Society group really set their mind on doing something for others and were dedicated to achieving that goal! I LOVE how this book is very focused on God's Word and very Biblically sound. I HIGHLY recommend this book for Middle School kids and for anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction! I am very much looking forward to reading more books in this series! FANTASTIC BOOK!

In the grim future, a universal government known as the World Force has taken over the globe. In the United States, they have burned down the churches and stolen children from their parents—or rather, parents from their children, leaving kids in the custody of the World Force.

Books have been outlawed as well. But deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, a group of kids have hidden their books in a cave. The prize of their treasure? The Bible.

Within the safety of the cavern walls, the kids meet in secret. There, they study the Word and read books like Huckleberry Finn. Meanwhile, the older boys of the group are preparing to escape conscription into the World Force military. It’s up to the younger kids—particularly 11-year-old Leena—to find a way to keep the group together.

Leena may have found the answer when she learns of a secret army of rebels that left behind a box of documents from America’s founding. With the seeds of a new nation—including the Declaration of Independence—in the palms of their hands, the children set out to find the rebels.

Author Terry Overton displays urgency in her message to kids about their importance to God and society. Her prose is quick to pass torches of Scripture and present Biblical applications. She doesn't hold back from warning kids of today what may happen to America tomorrow if things don't change soon. Overton, like many veterans in the Body of Christ, has realized that our best hope now is to train up kids in the way they should go.

Book 1 in her series proves Overton has written the most important work of fiction for Christian kids of our present day and future. It’s a master chess move against the schemes of the devil. Kids need to read this before it’s too late. “The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society” by Terry Overton earns our highest recommendation.

The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society by Terry Overton is a work of Middle Grades/Young Adult Christian Fiction Dystopian. Parents and older siblings have either died or disappeared. Books, education, and other signs of normalcy have disappeared. Children are living on their own with no one to rely on but themselves. But a few children come together to form a group that works to find books and support each other.

This book illustrates how important food and other necessities can be. I loved watching the children come together, learn together, and forge relationships to help others survive. I loved the pace at which the author developed the plot. I also appreciated how she developed their characters.

As a former homeschooling mom, I definitely would recommend this book. I believe it illustrates important skills such as growing your own food, the importance of books, and the importance of recognizing that learning about the past helps you make sure you don’t repeat past mistakes.

So whether you have a young adult or a middle-grade student or just enjoy reading well-written and well-thought-out stories, check out this book for yourself. I definitely recommend it.

Overton has created an entertaining novel for young readers as well as a sobering one for adults. I loved to read as a child but I know that is not the case with most children now. This novel really points out the value of books and what life would be like of they were taken away. Young readers will be reminded what we can learn from books and that there are certain books and documents we should know well.

The heroes in this novel are kids. I like the distinct personalities Overton has given them. What can the kids possibly do to survive, thrive and maybe even change the oppressive condition they have found themselves in? As one of them says, “We're just a bunch of kids.” Parents and older siblings gone, they are on their own. Can they learn to work together? Can they recover the vital knowledge stolen when the oppressive government took over? The possibilities before the kids might just inspire young readers of today.

This is a thought provoking novel for youth. It is obviously the first in a series as there is no suitable conclusion at the end. I will be looking for the sequel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

The Secret Society is a wonderful book written for middle school students that takes you into a world of fantasy but also of faith. This is an author whom I have read and enjoyed several books from. She has a great talent for writing for this age range. Her books are fun and easy to read while also containing a great truth or teaching moment plus faith.

In this story we come across a group of orphans in a world much unlike our own. Here they meet together to pray. But a fun fact is that the story takes place in 2031. It feels like it’s a way in the future but also it’s 2023 now and I don’t really know how that happened!

You’re going to love this book! It will give you bits of suspense but also like I said truth and some teaching and thinking moments.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Lovely story with great dialogue

I will say that I enjoyed the story and the dialogue between the characters. The plot was interesting and I would like to stay spoiler free so I will say that it was very detailed and you felt like you were one of these poor kids stuck in a world that just didn’t go right. It had a very Nazi take over feel. When the kids were reading the stories or just talking about regular normal life stuff like gardening or cooking it was very well written. I wish the map which I take it was made to look like a character drew it or even the cover done a bit better. Also i felt like the book left me hanging to much with the overall plot. If this is a series I would have hope for a little more prior to ending the story were it ended. It is interesting and I would recommend this book to avid readers I would hope there is a follow on that readers can rush right into.

This futuristic middle grade novel will appeal to older readers too. The story contains a definite Christian perspective but also offers a dystopian adventure that captures one’s attention. A small group of young people must face a devastated world on their own, without adult guidance. Their parents and older siblings are gone so these new friends must find their way as they work together to survive and try to bring about positive change. The author created an imaginative setting that feels authentic, but a world such as I hope we never have to face. I love the way the captivating characters value books (as I do) and how they assist and encourage one another. The plot offers excitement and suspense too. This offers a good role model for readers to follow. I look forward to the next book in The Underground Book Readers series. This could make a good read-aloud for a family or class discussion. I received a copy through Celebrate Lit and the author. All opinions are my own.

What would happen if every adult was suddenly taken?

This book is written for pre-teens and teens.
The author writes of a future time when all adults are either taken or die of a mysterious disease.
What would any remaining children do? How could they remain safe from the World Force that has taken over their country?
If the reader has knowledge of the world history, they will be reminded of a time when a group in power tried to dominate the world and force their ideology upon all.
The author, without ever mentioning the facts, reminds the reader just how important our country's history, major documents from 200 years ago, and knowledge of the bible truly is.
I gave the book 5 stars. I hope all school libraries as well as public libraries offer this book to their readers.

The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society is another middle grade genre book from Terry Overton. Even though it is for the younger reader, I still greatly enjoyed this book. It was fun taking a journey with the group of friends to see what discoveries they find and how it would all end for them.

I am giving The Underground Book Readers: The Secret Society a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who are between the ages of eight and thirteen and enjoy reading dystopian fiction. I can not wait to get my hands on the next installment from The Underground Book Readers to see what adventure awaits the characters.

I received a paperback copy of The Secret Society: The Underground Book Readers from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

In the year 2031, life in Virginia looks different than life today. The World Force came around the world and took out so many things we recognize today. Adults were taken away and once a teenager reaches 18 years old they are taken to work in work camps. The kids that are remaining are left on their own, except the Secret Society. They have found away to connect with one another and to look out for each other.

The story is geared towards tweens and teens but can be enjoyed by any age. The story introduces the characters and quickly ramps up the plot line. The book ends with the reader right on the edge of their seat. It will be a series to read for sure.

I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

This is a YA dystopian story that isn't necessarily completely dystopian! 2031 in this story brings us four children who are orphans. Before World Force destroyed things, they used to do normal activities, like go to church, and read books. With school and education banned, they are now their own secret club. How else will they learn the skills needed to survive? Is it safe to allow a new member? The kids are easy to connect to, and each has different strengths and weakness. If children are to rebuild the world, undercover, this is the group to follow. I loved the themes and faith interwoven. It does have a cliffhanger, but I'm waiting with full anticipation for the next book.

Celebrate Lit provided a digital copy, but I have bought one as well. A positive review is never required.

This is a great story! In a dystopian world, where all the adults have disappeared, a group of teenagers lives on their own and meet in secret to read books and learn. This book is very well written and easy to read and it drew me in right away. There’s lots of suspense as the characters are always in danger of being discovered by the World Force so they are constantly on the look out. I really liked how they would help each other out and share everything and I also really like that it’s from a Christian perspective! As an adult I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to continuing series. As a kid I would have absolutely loved this book and I’m sure I would have read it multiple times! I will definitely share this book with my daughter when she’s old enough!

A really good book about teens trying to learn how to live in a world where their parents have either died or disappeared. The world as we know it doesn’t exist anymore. A group called World Force has taken over the world .
A group of teens get together in their secret place and have church and read books which have been banned. If caught with the books they have found and hidden, they would be sent to work camps.
With food rationed out daily these youth learn they can join together and have a garden. With each helping, it makes the work go faster. A stranger shows up at the home of one of the teens. Will he be an enemy or is he looking for a family to join also?
Looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this series The Under Ground Book Readers United Forces .

What a wonderful book for all ages! When the World Force took over what use to be the United States, all churches and schools were burned, books were banned and people disappeared. When a small group of teens meet, they quickly become family, and secretly meet and form The Secret Society. Each member brings something to the group. They read books that they have smuggled into their secret place, they have church, they share whatever they have to stay safe and undiscovered. But when a newcomer is found, will it put them all in danger? Can he be trusted ? This book has mystery , adventure, and a lot of determination from these young children who pull their resources together to figure out a way to bring the country back

This is an amazing new series! It’s unique in that these kids are on their own trying to survive and see the importance of a world with books. I loved the characters and how they all take care of each other and become a little family of their own. These kids are resourceful, and want to make a difference in their world. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, and I know my kids are going to love this new series.

This book is thought-provoking. It builds a dystopian future that is not miles away from reality at times. It makes the reader think and is scarily believable in places.
I like the premise of the book and the way books and reading are presented as powerful and imbuing knowledge. While accurate it is nice to see books and the printed version of them being championed even in a dystopian future.
This is the first book I have read by this author and it will not be the last. Whilst I am not the target audience for this book I did enjoy it and I will certainly suggest to YA readers, and young at heart readers, to give it a try.

Ms. Overton’s YA book The Journey: The Underground Book Readers, takes us into the future where books are burned, freedom is nearly nonexistent, shows us the power of literature, faith, and how resilient young people can be. In this dystopian future a group of young people, form an underground network to share knowledge, and keep the flame of it going, in the challenging world they find themselves in. I loved the way the author wove the Constitution, and the Bible into the story. This story is both imaginative and eerily plausible in our world.
A brilliant series, which I’m looking forward to reading all of the books in.

I received this book from the author through Voracious Readers Only, in exchange for a review.

I enjoyed the story, but would probably enjoy it more if I had a young person to read it with me.
The story takes place e in the not too distant future, where education (schools, books) and religion have been destroyed or banned (or both).

pondering on these points in the context of the young people who are trying to find a future apart from those restrictions, while staying safe provides some good talking points, which would be great to contemplate with another.
