this sequel is total and complete filler… but im not even mad about it.

and its only because of the characters. this story wouldnt be half as enjoyable if the characters werent who they are. it still is such a treat and refreshing to see each of them as they are, continuing to come of age in court and navigating the world together. so who really needs a plot when you have such a great cast to read about?

and even with the liberties taken regarding the original arthurian myths and the modernised feel of the narrative, this story still oozes the chivalrous charm of camelot with the magic, knights, and court politics.

im so glad the story is playing out in a way that gives us at least one more book!

This series is a hidden gem. I was afraid that THE FUTURE KING would suffer from Sequel Syndrome — slowly paced, dragging out the plot for no reason except to set up Book Three, creating unnecessary character conflict to destroy any growth from Book One, etc. I worried for nothing; this is super fun and the heart of the book centers the found family. It IS setting up the plot for the final book, but nothing felt forced or unfaithful to the characters.

Unlike the first book — where all the main characters are mostly in the same space with overlapping journeys — the sequel has more physical separation and distinct character arcs. Arthur struggles with his father's poor health and an upcoming forced marriage, Emry works on a magical problem, Guin grapples with the consequences of , Arthur's friends form a secret alliance to protect the castle, and even Morgana deals with imprisonment in a magical realm. There's no plot twist that ever surprised me, but tbh I don't need to be shocked or awestruck by a fantasy novel. I just need to have a good time, and THE FUTURE KING delivered that in spades. I breezed through the audiobook through an afternoon of chores, and I can't wait for the next book.

For fans of Galavant, A Knight's Tale, and people who don't give a damn about retelling/historical accuracy. This series is deliberately anachronistic and it's my very favorite aspect of the worldbuilding.

Read via audio (narrated by Rosie Jones).

I just love the characters too much is all

Back to say this book is a lot lighter on the romance than the first book (which is also not that heavy on the romance). You also meet a lot of new characters in this book and some from the first book get promoted to supporting cast. I really liked the ensemble element of this book, but it means there's a lot more going on with this book and less of a concrete plot compared to the first book.

Arthur is moody and doesn't want to be king or to follow through with the arranged marriage his family has set up. Emery is now a court wizard alongside her brother, but she's struggling to control the new powers she has gotten as a result of her brush with Morgana. Lancelot is finally a squire, but is overworked by his Knight and can't make time for his new relationship with the guardsman Percival (a great new character, IMO). Emmett and Guineviere are in the midst of a secret relationship.

A lot is going on. And while the first book offers the fantastic trio of Lancelot, Emery, and Arthur, the characters in book two spend a lot less time together. Each character is really going through their own thing.

I have high hopes that the third book will bring the characters all together as the Knights of the Roundtable defend Camelot. Will anything in this series end up rivaling how much I loved the first book? Maybe not.

A fun sequel but not as good as the first book. I really enjoyed the consistent pacing throughout the story, and the thorough character development. I look forward to reading the third book, and reading more by this author.

Thank you so much to Penguin Teen for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

The Future King is a fun follow-up to The Other Merlin, which I loved reading last year! The vibes of this Arthurian retelling match the vibes of a teen comedy with the right balance of fantasy and magic. I enjoyed following Emry, Arthur, Guin, Emmett, and Lance navigate their respective journeys ranging from possibly becoming the future court wizard of Camelot, the future King of Camelot, and an unexpected start to family planning. It was cool to have various chapters told in each of the character's POV (more than The Other Merlin). I'd rate this 4 stars instead of 5 just because the novel did felt like a filler book setting us up for the finale of this trilogy with less action overall than The Other Merlin, but I'm definitely still curious to see what happens in the concluding book in the Emery Merlin trilogy.

Special thanks to Penguin Teen and NetGalley for an eARC of this book! All thoughts and opinions reflected in this review are my own.
I am absolutely obsessed with this series! Obsessed, you hear me?
I gave the first book in this series 4.5 stars, because it was so much fun, but it felt a little slow at parts—I did not feel like that about this one! From the get go, I was flying through it. This series is the perfect balance of lighthearted teen dramedy and high fantasy magic that makes it so addicting. I fully squealed a few times reading this book because it’s just so fun!
This book is told in multiPOV, which isn’t typically my favorite. I think it’s the main thing that had me struggling slightly to get into book one at first, but I had no such issues in The Future King, because I was already so connected and obsessed with every character. I loved getting to see into all of their heads.
This was a strong sequel to an amazing series. My only complaint is that I have to wait a year for book 3!

2) Charakter A ist traurig / verzweifelt.

Alles in allem dennoch naja. Makes me sad :(.

Robyn, you did it again!

I absolutely loved The Other Merlin and I definitely recommend a reread before diving into this one! All the ideas in book one were fresh, and there were small callbacks I might have missed if I did not reread.

One of my favorite parts about this book is that is is not just about Emry and Arthur. It is also about their friends, and the people around them. This helps flesh out some of the side characters, and it gives me a feeling that they are all going to be part of book three in a big way.

Speaking of which.....when is book three coming out?!

Of course, this book is slightly different than book one. Book one had Emry finding her place in the world, masquerading as her brother. In this one she is unabashedly herself, even if she still struggles with her identity at times. And despite some lingering feelings between her and Arthur, this book focuses very little on the romance - and more on the story at hand.

I loved seeing Emry's character development, both personally and magically, and I loved seeing all the other characters fleshed out too. I teared up in this book, I laughed at all the silly jokes/interactions, and I tabbed so many lines I just thought were too good. I loved every moment of this book, and I look forward to seeing the conclusion of this story!

I was thrilled after reading the first book in this series, The Other Merlin, because it was the first truly good modern reinterpretation of Arthurian Legend. The second book in the series also doesn’t disappoint, and continues Robyn Schneider’s truly unique and wonderful take on a very old story.

You can argue that Arthurian Legend is the original buddy adventure, and this series is very much in that tradition. Best pals having adventures together is my favorite fantasy trope, and this series does it better than most.

There are a lot of creative spins on Arthurian plot points incorporated into this series, and Schneider has also done an outstanding job of adding new plot points and seamlessly involving new characters into the story.

Though there’s a critical villain from Arthurian canon yet to become involved, so far the conflict has been good without ever getting too angsty, and Arthur, at the very least, is decidedly less emo than most past Arthurs, and that creates the perfect lighter, swashbuckling tone that has made this series so intriguing and fun.

This place has everything: disappointing fathers, gargoyles who desperately yearn for the sweet release of death, arrowroot, and the realization that your demons will follow you across worlds.

A very impressive book that crams a lot in but never feels cramped, worth a read/listen if you want a friendship-filled adventure in which you find yourself rooting for a bunch of characters, even some you might not expect.

I LOVED this book! Each time I put it down, I couldn’t wait to pick it back up. It continues to remind me of BBC’s Merlin and the CW’s Reign in all the best ways.

I love these characters and cannot wait to read the conclusion of their journeys. Great rep and pacing. Highly recommend especially if you’re a King Arthur fan.

4.5 rounded down. God damn I love this series!! I only wish it were only Emry and Arthur’s POVs but that’s a personal preference obviously. I’m obsessed with the twists on this legend and their romance is absolute perfection. This is funny and witty and absolutely brilliant and if you are at all interested in King Arthur or the Knights of the Round Table or Morgana or any of it you need to make this your next read. I cannot wait to see how this ends!

Men hallåååååååå vad är det här för trist uppföljare. Ingenting händer ju, allt löser sig för perfekt, och bokens klimax är så antiklimaktiskt. Plus, jag tyckte det var för mycket fokus på sex, blev lite ställd av det.

This book is still fun! I kind of think this could have stayed a duology and doesn’t need to be a trilogy but I also love these characters so I’m down for more.

I have to admit the new covers ARE NOT DOING IT FOR ME. here’s the thing. I get the cartoon covers seem to work for some projects and I’m sure the publishing house just have done focus groups so maybe I’m not normal for this opinion but the other Merlin cover was so much better than these new ones and I don’t like that I can’t get mine to match. Authors have been doing this lately changing styles in book two or three and I’m just like ugh let me have matching covers. Granted some preorders got the cartoon cover for the other Merlin but I didn’t want it because it isn’t as good!

So this book has some second book syndrome that I coined for trilogies where our characters are mostly spectated doing their own thing and “traveling” the flow isn’t too bad here because things are still fast and there’s not a lot of down time just chilling which often kills second books. I still love Emry and her motivations are things I can relate too. I do wish she had a bit more focus at key moments and stopped being so distracted by pretty people but she’s a teen!

Pretty much the characters are still likable and doing things you can mostly support with the exception of Emmett who is still an immature mess who is so selfish and self centered and I honestly wish people would be more harsh with him. And Gwen (Guin) same thing so selfish and self centered they honestly deserve each other. SPOILER ALERT she and Emmett are so reckless they get pregnant because apparently no one thought about the consequences of having sex and it’s SO ANNOYING.

When ‘Em goes to France to get help with her magic Arthur becomes a bit annoying too but I love seeing Gawain and his family again and her meeting the sorcerer’s wife who is more knowledgeable than her husband. And the French king is ridiculous.

More spoilers.
The king is dying and Arthur is struggling with the pressure. Gwen tells him she’s pregnant and that she wanted to trap him (seriously she’s sucks nothing redeems her) and he feels so bad he’s willing to marry her and pretend the kid is his (also dumb). But this doesn’t happen because she marries Emmett seemingly without consequence too easy!

Camelot is invaded by Arthur’s uncle and his dad dies so he defends Camelot and is declared king. Emry is officially the court wizard after her mentor bravely sacrifices himself (this was sad in the end he really tries with her and believed she could be so much more than she is)

I’m another world Morgana is dumb and frees and evil witch and also resurrects Merlin so you know that’s gonna be interesting in book three.

Can’t wait for the follow up. I do hope it’s the last one because I think the story is ready. Merlin will reunite with his kids. Arthur will fight more battles until he is cemented as King. They will have to defeat Morgana and the new witch. Idk what will happen with his relationship with Emry I want them to be together but I honestly don’t know how.

This was my most anticipated book of this year. I finished the first book and immediately wanted the sequel. Which of course was repeated as I finished the second book in two days and needed to know what happens next in this exhilarating series.

I re-read The Other Merlin to prep and was immediately able to dive back into this world. I really love the modern tone in the context of an older time period. There isn't a single main character that I don't like. Emry and Arthur are such a great pairing and I love getting to hear both of their points of view. Lance, Gawain, Emmett and Guinevere are all also fun and complex characters that aren't there just to service the leads stories. I really enjoy being in this world.

The romance between Emry and Arthur makes me swoon, I love their love so much. But, I'm also rooting for Lance and Percival, Guin and Emmett. There's a lot of love going around the castle but it isn't insta-love or convenient. They all have a lot of layers and nothing is easy or simple.

The idea of Emry who's always had such a strong grasp on her magic losing control was intriguing and scary. She's incredibly powerful, but I appreciate that she respects the power that she wields much like Arthur. She is bound to her magic as he is to Camelot.

Morgana's story was an interesting twist. A supreme evil sorceress stripped of her powers in an alternate reality. Her interactions with Bellecint were chilling and her cliffhanger ending was what made me go, I need the third book as soon as possible.

I loved the developments, the twists, the nods to the origin story, the romance. I love knowing that this series will become one of my lifetime favorites and one I will look forward to returning to again and again. (Joining the likes of The Hunger Games, The Mirror Visitor and The Charlotte Holmes series.). I guess I've got a type, sarcastic, kick ass female protagonists who are wont to fall in love with men whom I would also marry.
