I caught myself smiling several times as I turned the pages of this book. That is partially due to the sweet notes written in the margins by my dear mom and partially due to the sentiments of true love from God conveyed by Giambarba. I particularly liked the chapter on the Holy Spirit. It was refreshing to be reminded of the love that God has for me made especially evident through His gift of the Holy Spirit. “How can I not love deeply he who left himself within me for my own good?” This book was a reminder of Gods love that came at a perfect time in my life. It was also an encouragement to put effort into the refinement of my relationship with God rather than achieving Christian goals. It fit right into my study of the fruit of the spirit as well and was a good reset on my purpose in that study for this final month.
This book warmed up on me. I believe my heart has a cynical base when it comes to these kind of books about God, Christianity, and living a righteous life. But I must say, that Giambarba, may be on to something here. His target audience are those who are looking to reignite their passion for God or Christianity, and I think he makes a compelling case. I think he accurately sets forth some of the contributing factors to being “lukewarm”. I only wish he revealed more about himself and his struggles. I think that would have made his appeal more real. This is my issue with all books of this kind. They lack the vulnerability required behind, what is , essentially, an opinion. Therefore, coming off as a sermon in book form. I thought it was worth the read period, but definitely if you’re a Christian looking to stoke the old flames. (2002)
