When seamstress Lydia Barnes finds a dead body soon after moving to a new town, she will need more than shear luck to find the killer, in this novel perfect for fans of Molly MacRae and Anna Gerard.
Lydia Barnes is excited for a fresh start when she moves to the quaint mountain town of Peridot, Georgia. Her friend, Fran, offers her a job at the Measure Twice fabric store and even sets her up on a date with the handsome Brandon Ivey, who also happens to be Lydia’s new next-door neighbor. Finally, things are looking up. But after a disaster first date that ends with a fist bump instead of a kiss, Lydia doesn’t think her night can get any worse. She’s soon proven wrong when she later stumbles upon Brandon’s dead body.
Considered the prime suspect by the police, Lydia calls on her friends to help her hunt for the truth and prove her innocence. But when another body is soon found inside the Measure Twice store, Lydia knows that the killer must be close by, and that this town has more than its fair share of secrets. Who would want to frame the newest addition to Peridot for these terrible murders—and why?
Lydia may discover that while sewing might have a pattern, killing rarely does. Will she be able to stitch together the clues and clear her own name before the killer strikes again?
Lydia Barnes worked at Measure Twice, a fabric store in the small town of Peridot in Georgia. Fran, her boss, had even set her up in the apartment above the shop. Now, with her faithful dog Charlie by her side, Lydia felt like she'd come home. But that was before she found the body of a recent, disastrous first date, and suddenly she was a suspect in his death. But another body, this time in Measure Twice, had Lydia thinking someone was trying to frame her. And they were doing a good job. Would she and her friends be able to find the killer before Lydia herself ended up dead?
Seams Deadly is the 1st in A Measure Twice Sewing Mystery series by new to me author Maggie Bailey, and unfortunately I didn't enjoy it. I skipped the many details about sewing; it was slow to take off and when it did, there weren't any fireworks. The only things I liked were the dog and the crazy cat! I won't be looking out for #2 when it comes out.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
A new author for me and the first book in a new series.
Lydia Barnes is trying to start a new life in Peridot, Georgia, after leaving her cheating husband. Things are looking good. She has a place to live, new friends and a job she loves. Sadly there is a murder and she is the number one suspect.
I enjoyed the story, skipped some of the details about sewing and loved every moment with the amazing cat! Lydia herself was a little helpless - no strong woman here at all. The other characters were interesting. The series definitely has promise.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I honestly can't remember how I found Seams Deadly by Maggie Bailey but since I am a fan of cozies it doesn't really matter! This is the first book in the A Measure Twice Sewing Mystery series, and the ending definitely leaves an opening for future books. I really enjoyed the character of Lydia who seems to have a knack for stumbling across dead bodies and making the police think she's the killer. The plot does focus heavily on sewing and even though I don't sew, that didn't end up bothering me. I actually found it interesting, but I can see how not everyone would. This is almost geared to an older audience in my opinion, but that doesn't mean people of any age can't read it.
I enjoyed the audiobook which is narrated by Allyson Johnson, but I can't say I'm completely sold on her as the voice of Lydia. She sounds older than I would expect the character to sound, but she did a good job, so it was fine for me. The pacing was a little slow in the very beginning, but as that picked up things also got more interesting. I don't know that I fully enjoyed ALL of the characters in Seams Deadly and thought the characterization was a little lacking, but I am hoping that will get better with additional books in the series. I did love the dog and our wild cat that Lydia adopts, but I kinda wish they would have put the dog on the cover as well since he is there from the very beginning. Be that as it may, I enjoyed the book overall and I would definitely read the second when it comes out!
I struggled to read this book. I think this book just isn't for me. This is the first cozy I've read where fabric is the focus and I was very bored by it. I also tend to gravitate toward cozies where the main character helps solve the mystery and this character just happend to be there.
In addition, I didn't find the characters to be engaging or likable. The MC didn't seem mature enough to be 40. She came across as naive and somewhat self absorbed.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was excited to find another cozy series set in the north Georgia mountains. As someone who grew up in the state, it's always amusing to see how others view it.
Unfortunately, 𝙎𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙡𝙮 fell flat. In part because the geography felt weird. Set in the foothills (of the foothills), the story kept saying "up to Atlanta", which is lower on the piedmont area. And the town square felt like a movie set when Bailey mentioned quieter streets nearby. That kept pulling me out.
Lydia is our series protagonist, yet we know little about her outside of a messy divorce and general mopiness. Friend group is supposed to love her..but why? So passive. She doesn't do anything proactive. Ever. She's so wishy washy. And at 40, she's middle aged, not ancient. All she does is talk down about herself.
Lots of repetitive sentences, sometimes only pages apart. Felt superficial. Two stars for the potential. There were strange caricatures of small town residents, military/cop appreciation, and shoehorned Christianity.
The murderer was easy to guess while the cop was lazy in demanding Lydia find the real culprit. Added to that, she lives in Peridot sans car. But how did she get there from Atlanta? Especially if she has money. And it was never explained why fabric was so important to her as a teacher.
Plus the constant references to sewing but not offering strong visuals on the patterns for non-sewists. And in the random DnD reference that went nowhere and pushiness for gun use.
𝙎𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙡𝙮 just wasn't the book for me. If you like GAC movies, this is the book for you.

When I saw this title on NetGalley, I was immediately intrigued. The bright cover, and the vivid description captured my attention and I immediately downloaded it. From the moment I read the first line, I knew I was going to love this book. Lydia is trying to gain control of her life after a heartbreaking discovery of her husband cheating on her. Moving to a small town seemed cathartic for her, and working in Measure Twice, the local fabric store, seemed like a dream to Lydia. Things were progressing well until a sort of date turns deadly, and all evidence points to Lydia. When another murder victim is discovered, Lydia once again is the suspect and she has no idea who would be setting her up. When the investigation concluded I was absolutely stunned by who the murderer was. I am thrilled to have found another author who can impress me with a great first in a new series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book. #SeamsDeadly #NetGalley
I enjoyed this book. Lydia doesn’t really investigate the murders but is involved by being a suspect. I liked the environment, the city sounds charming. I peculiarly enjoyed the fabric store as it reminded me of all the fabric my mom had, she was a quilter as well. I was surprised by who the killer is. #SeamsDeadly #NetGalley
Lydia Barnes needs a fresh start after finding her husband in bed with another woman and her friend Fran has the perfect way to do that. She invites Lydia and her dog Charlie to move to Peridot where she has an apartment and a job just waiting for her. Fran owns the Measure Twice Fabric store and Lydia loves to sew so she is excited to work there. The apartment is right upstairs too. Fran may have gone too far though in setting Lydia up on a date with her new neighbor Brandon Ivey. The date was pretty awful and didn't end with a kiss. It ended with a fist bump. Since she still has to live next to the guy she decides to take him some brownies she had baked. That didn't go as planned either. She finds Brandon dead and the weapon links her to his murder.
She hopes her new friends can help her stitch together some clues to get her off the list of suspects. But before they do another body is found inside the fabric store.
Why is the killer framing Lydia for their crimes? Has she been in town long enough to make a real enemy? Is she going to be the next victim?
____
Lydia Barnes was an unlikable main character at the start. She came off to me as much younger than the 40 years she is supposed to be. She was sure to tell everyone she met about her cheating ex and was very querulous at times. I had a hard time believing she was a former middle school teacher with her escaping into her head so much and her daydreaming about the clothes she would make. I also didn't like the way she wanted to change her friend's store from the start and why didn't the woman have a car? Soon I adjusted my thinking to just let her be because the characters the author surrounded her with really caught my interest.
I really like Fran. The woman had a huge heart and really opened doors for Lydia and others. One of my dreams that was never fulfilled was to own my own fabric store so living vicariously through Fran was fun even when she was dealing with the pitfalls of owning a business. Heather, Fran's assistant was interesting too. She really wasn't happy about all the attention Fran was giving Lydia and if I had been her I would have been upset too. Lydia's new friend Cynde, a court stenographer and a shop regular, was an interesting character as well. The whole supporting cast, aside from the creepy neighbor who lived on the other side of Lydia, developed so well over the course of the story while leaving room for them to grow as the series continues.
The mystery was well-plotted. I enjoyed the way the friends all gathered to discuss the case and their theories. I was able to pin down the killer before the scary reveal but I needed to have the motive spelled out for me and it was surprising.
One subplot stole my heart. Lydia rescued a kitty from a shelter that had been there a long time. I was so happy that Baby Lobster found a home.
Peridot, Georgia is a charming little Southern town full of some delightful residents even the long-winded Clark but he grew on me pretty fast. I enjoyed the way the group came together in the end at the donut shop to show their support for Lydia going forward. It was also a time for any loose threads to be explained.
I was drawn to this series because of the sewing theme. Prior to an accident in 2001 I was what I guess you would call now quite a "sewist" making most of my and my family's clothes and I loved everything about constructing a quilt. I loved most of the sewing references but sometimes they were a little too detailed and I felt that may detract non-"sewists" from enjoying the story. I did understand fully the way we who sew care about our sewing sheers and that they are only used for cutting fabric and nothing else including paper. All these years later my children still remember the lessons and the punishment they received if they were caught using my sheers.
Seams Deadly had a few hiccups but it has set this series off to a satisfactory start. The ending has set up a real twist for the series and I am very intrigued to see what Ms. Bailey has planned for her characters. I hope we learn why Lydia wasn't awarded a car in her divorce settlement, in this day and age there has to be a reason. I am rounding my rating up to 4 starfish.
Seams Deadly by Maggie Bailey is a great cozy mystery that is the first in a new series: A Measure Twice Sewing mystery.
I really enjoyed this new start to what I think is going to be an engaging and entertaining series.
Small town Peridot, Georgia is a cute, and quaint town with southern charm and a great backdrop. Lydia Barnes is a fun and perfect main character looking for a second chance in this town and in her position with the Measure Twice Fabric store. Of course there is a murder/mystery that then follows.
The sewing theme with the MC and cast of characters that we are introduced to make for an adorable and memorable first book to this promising series.
Definitely looking forward to the next one.

When I seen the cover of this book I knew I had to read it. iI loved every moment of this book, it was hard to put down between chapters. Lydia is such a likable character. As she figures out her new life after a heartbreak. Her new small town home is right above her job, convenient for her. As she tries to get to know everyone, the night ends up with a murder and she’s the only suspect. But wait there’s more. Another murder and again Lydia is the only suspect. Finding the killer is crucial to clear her name. Everyone who loves a good “who-dunnit” story will be obsessed with this book.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me early access to this book. #seamsdeadly #netgalley
A lot of potential but it unfortunately didn't deliver in the end. I don't read a lot of cozy books and small town mysteries so this was kind of a new experience for me and I must say, I liked the atmosphere and the overall vibes. There was a great cast of side characters which definitely made this book more pleasant. I think the main mystery was well thought out, predictable but still could be enjoyable.
However the whole story was in my opinion too long and quite honestly boring. Although it took place over 2 or 3 action-packed days, I had to force myself to keep reading because it just wasn't interesting enough. Perhaps the subject of sewing just isn't for me but I think there were way too many descriptions and main character's thoughts that were completely unrelated to the plot and didn't lead anywhere. The writing also suffered from repeated words and sentences, and some bigger and smaller mistakes (e. g. at one point Lydia is talking to Clark and she mentions finding Clark's body). The main character was, in my opinion, insufferable - very bland, uninteresting and irritating at times. Also her behavior and attitude when it comes to the cat she adopted was ridiculous and irresponsible - and while that might be just my sensitivity talking, it did taint the whole reading experience (seriously, why even adopt a cat if you're gonna leave them in your apartment and not even try to make them feel comfortable and safe?).
Overall, I think the idea was good, the book had a lot of potential thanks to the mystery and atmosphere but unfortunately ended in disappointment due to the writing and the main character.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the eARC, all opinions are mine.
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this eARC.
I liked the story, it was quick, cozy, and fun. However, it did read a lot like other cozies I've read before and nothing really stood out for me. I also found it to be a bit predictable.
Lydia Barnes has escaped to a quaint little mountain town in North Georgia after her life in Atlanta has been upended. Her love of sewing brings her to Peridot, Georgia in the Blue Ridge Mountains where there is a local sew shop owned by Fran, a woman she quickly grows fond of. Fran hires her to work at the shop, and even lets her and her beloved dog Charlie move in to the apartment above. Life is going surprisingly well for Lydia and she settles in to a routine quickly. But all that changes when she discovers Brandon, a man she has just gone on a lackluster first date with, stabbed in the neck with a pair of dress shears that came from none other than the sewing shop she works at and lives above. When the police inform her that she's their prime suspect, she sets off on a mission to discover more of this quaint little mountain town's secrets before it's too late... And before anyone else ends up dead.
This cozy little mystery was exactly what I was in the mood for. It only helps that I have spent plenty of time in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia myself, and I found myself lost in the little world that Maggie Bailey created. There were so many unique characters to meet along the way. Even Peridot, Georgia felt like its own unique character that was a joy to get to know. Lydia was a likeable main character and it was easy to relate to her and her emotional reactions to the situations she found herself in. I will say that there are a LOT of references to sewing and if you're anything like me you may end up skimming through a lot of it that you don't understand. However, if you have knowledge of sewing (techniques, patterns, etc.) that may end up being a part of the story that you enjoy the most.
This was an easy, fast moving story that checked all the boxes for a cozy mystery. While I wish the editing was a bit more polished (there were some typos that were overlooked) I found the writing style to be easy to digest and an enjoyable read. I'll be keeping Maggie Bailey on my radar!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lydia Barnes is a sewist and comfort cook. She loves to make her own clothes and wants everyone to know what a wonderful hobby it is. Her home is now in the mountain town of Peridot, but until recently, she had lived with her ex-husband in Atlanta. A re-start is what she needs, and with her new friend, Fran, providing a job and place to live, what could possibly go wrong?
After a less than successful date with her new next-door neighbour, Lydia heads out to deliver some chocolate brownies and is horrified to find a dead body! Even worse, the murder weapon leads back to her, and the Sheriff sees Lydia as his chief suspect, especially after she discovers a second body with even stronger ties to her new life. Seeing killers around every corner, Lydia has no idea where to turn; Fran is distracted, and everyone seems to have their own theories about what happened. Needing to clear her name, Lydia begins her own investigation, but is she putting herself in danger of becoming Peridot's briefest resident?
The new Measure Twice Sewing mystery series gets off to a good start with a storyline which provides an interesting investigation alongside the introduction of a group of varied characters who promise much. Lydia isn't your usual main protagonist, instead she’s a mix of confidence, naivety, and overthinking, making her both endearing and annoying.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Crooked Lane Books, but the opinions expressed are my own. I enjoyed this, and there is scope for some interesting mysteries in future books, which I will definitely be on the lookout for.
The cat steals the show in this book with her hilarious personality and heroics! This is the first of a new series and as with a lot of new series it may take a book or two to really feel like you know the characters. At times I felt like I was getting to know the characters well, then something would happen that seemed counterintuitive to the personality profile of that character. The main character, Lydia, is going through a divorce and a lot of this book is devoted to the backstory of her cheating husband to help explain how she got to where she is today. I'm thinking the second book will give us a better solid look at who she is now and hopefully with a little more grace so that she isn't always absorbed in her own drama. The murder mystery was well plotted and there were several potential suspects to send you down the wrong path if you aren't paying attention! Overall, I'd say this was a good first book and I am curious to see how the second book in the series flows.
I really enjoyed this first in series. Lydia has moved to the idyllic Peridot, Georgia after finding her husband in bed with her assistant. Her friend, Fran happens to own a sewing shop in Peridot and hooks her up with an apartment above her shop and a job. Fran sets Lydia up with local hottie, Brandon Ivey who happens to be her neighbor. The date is a total flop, but Lydia tries to make the best of it by bringing Brandon some home made brownies after the failed date, but finds him murdered in his apartment.
Really enjoyed the characters in this book and the small town feel of Peridot.

I enjoy reading cozy mysteries, but this one didn't have the same feel that other cozies have. It didn't have a light feel to it, but it did keep my interest.
I did think that the main charcter, Lydia was somewhat annoying and immature. I had to keep reminding myself that she is 40 and not 20. Yes, she caught her ex husband cheating on her which could mess a person up, but I still have a feeling that is her normal personality.
The mystery was interesting and it kept me guessing. The ending was a surprise, I didn't expect that person to be the murderer or the motive.

I enjoyed this book so much. It felt original and captivated me from the start. I loved the creative imagery linking each character to patterns. This really helped me follow the characters and the story with ease. This story felt well thought without giving too much of the mystery away.. I’m eager to continue with the series and follow these terrific characters in future books.

Leaving Atlanta behind, Lydia Barnes heads to the mountains to work at a friend’s fabric store. Fran not only sets Lydia up in the apartment above the shop, she sets her up on a date as well. While the date was no love match, Lydia can move on. Well, until she finds Brandon murdered…with scissors from the fabric store right where she lives. Now she’s the main suspect in his murder and there’s no putting it all behind her now.
Now Lydia has to find out who wanted Brandon dead and decided to pin it on her. With friends to help, they’re hoping they can fit all the pieces of the pattern together and come up with the person who sketched this one out, before the murderer starts sketching out the next one.
A good start to a new series. I can certainly understand leaving Atlanta behind for the Georgia mountains, but what a horrible welcome wagon to greet her. I’m looking forward to more in this series!
the main character's life is my dream retirement plan (move to the mountains, run a fabric store, spend all my free time with my dog and cat and sewing), minus all the murders writing was not my fav (a bit choppy, weird pacing) but it def hit the mark for max cozy murder mystery vibes
Titulo: Seams Deadly (A Measure Twice Sewing Mystery #1) Autor: Maggie Bailey Año publicado: 2023 Motivo de lectura: #NetGalley #ARC Lectura / Relectura: Lectura Fisico / Electronico: Electronico Mi edicion: - Idioma: Ingles Puntuacion: 4.5/5

I really had no experience with the "cozy mystery" genre and I must say that I loved it. The construction of the characters is not based on going deep into their personal stories, but rather everything is based on the interaction between them, on the group dynamics. The characters from this book are colorful and diverse.
The plot is really well written, it maintains the mystery, but at the same time the story it's warm. The prose is simple and effective. Without a doubt Maggie Bailey is a great writer, I can't wait to continue reading the saga.
And of course Demon Crab (hahahahaha) stole my heart!
Lydia Barnes leaves Atlanta after finding her husband in a compromising position with her teaching assistant. She lands in Peridot, Georgia, an idyllic little town that caters to sewist tourists such as herself. Though she's perfectly happy to take a little time to get settled into her new life, her friends push her into going on a date with a local bookseller. It's not a love match but when she reaches out later with a consolation prize of treats, she finds out someone else has already given him a much less pleasant consolation.
This book has a lot of things I love, a woman starting over again in a new town, following her passion to a new career, and ornery rescue pets. I also love the apartment over the store where Lydia lives. There were a few things that I didn't love. I felt it was a bit rude that Lydia has just started working at Measure Twice and is already trying to change the way they do business by bringing apparel sewing into a quilt shop despite the fact that the owner isn't really supportive of it. I also felt that a lot of the problems Lydia had could have been solved by her just communicating better with the people around her.
Overall this book was a quick read and definitely worth checking out.
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
