About the author

Ralph Compton (April 11, 1934—September 16, 1998) was an American writer of western fiction.

A native of St. Clair County, Alabama, Compton began his writing career with a notable work, The Goodnight Trail, which was chosen as a finalist for the Western Writers of America "Medicine Pipe Bearer Award" bestowed upon the "Best Debut Novel". He was also the author of the Sundown Rider series and the Border Empire series. In the last decade of his life, he authored more than two dozen novels, some of which made it onto the USA Today bestseller list for fiction.

Ralph Compton died in Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 64. Since his passing, Signet Books has continued the author's legacy, releasing new novels, written by authors such as Joseph A. West and David Robbins, under Compton's byline.

When the going gets rough, Danielle Strange dresses like a man and takes care of business.

Like one of the Headhunter series, without the sex.

Fourth novel in the Danielle Strange / Danny Duggin series. There is a little bit of the story about Marshall McCord who had the hots for Danielle in the third novel, but nothing was ever said about her two brothers in this story. I thought that was weird. Where are the brothers? Lots of characters in this book. Outlaws treeing a couple towns and then killing everyone in them. Danielle goes after them but runs into the problem that the outlaws aren’t taking her seriously as a woman, so she goes back to being Danny Duggin. One thing I got tired of was about every other page to maybe every ten pages, someone was looking someone else “up and down”. Got old. Otherwise, I liked the story. But where are Danielle's brothers?

Excellent western author

Tony Hillerman, Louis L'amour and now Ralph Compton. I'm so glad I discovered this author. I have really enjoyed reading this book. I like western and it has been hard for me to find good ones. I highly recommend this book but read the first in the series before reading this one and you will enjoy it more.

My least favorite of the series. This book had more graphic language (some violent, but mainly sexual) it than the others did, and for that I give it a star less.

Death Along the Cimarron is the fourth novel in the Danielle Strange aka Danny Duggin series. I have yet to read the previous three novels and in some places that would have helped. Danielle helps an older man named Stick, who used to be cook that she met previously as Danny. He tells her that her former boss, Tuck, married but then lost his wife and fell to drinking. The men that she saved him from reports back to their boss, Cherokee Earl, who goes on a killing spree before kidnapping the wife of his cattle rustling "partner".

There are some interesting characters but also much jumping from character to character, which makes for some slow parts. The ending is good and I recommend it mostly to fans of western novels. Overall, I give Death Along the Cimarron a B-.

I normally don't read westerns. Unless they're about horses. :) However, I first came across "Death Rides a Chestnut Mare," the first in the series and the title caught my eye, of course. The plot interested me of a young woman who dresses as a man and rides the vengeance trail to avenge the murder of her father. I thought it was originally only three books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I just found out about this one after I started adding all my books to Goodreads and exploring more books by the authors I so enjoy. This book was NOT a disappointment. Although I still want to know what happens between Tuck and Danielle! Maybe a fifth book although the author is deceased?

One of the Danny Duggin tales. The way I hear it, Danny Duggin is the male alias of Danielle Strange, a fast-draw straight shooting young lady. Danielle's father was killed by some outlaws and she went incognito on the "vengeance trail" to track down the killers. In this episode Danielle's fatal showdown with an ill-tempered outlaw has far-reaching consequences for Danielle and everyone who knows her. Great writing that pulls you right into the story, lots of action, and some sound effects which do not distract from the telling. I may have to look for the other Danny Duggin novels.

I have been interested in reading more about the west and was given this book. The heroine, Danielle Strong , is a gun slinging feminist who is out to seek revenge for the death of her father, but finds love instead, I thought it was a little contrived and the descriptions of the west were not enough to make me like the book more.

Danny Dugan Finally came out of hiding to be a woman again. Then the trouble started and she had to go back to here male roll. I also enjoyed the other three books of this series.
