I received Carolyn Shelling's memoir, Eagle through the Goodreads First Reads program and just finished it. On a family trip to Hawaii, Carolyn reveals about how her faith interacts with the details of her life. Much of the book deals with the signs she receives from God that she is supposed to write this book. That reminded me of how often when something becomes central in your life you are sensitive to connections to the world around you regarding that centering event. In other words, God's grace surrounds us, but often we are not sensitive to it and we miss the signs--at least that is my experience.

Carolyn refers quite a bit to the writing process and her previous book, "Mulligan." In this way her book is about a woman who is starting a new vocation after retirement as a writer of faith inspired books and would be a model for other retired women for "where do I go from here?"

I have had periods in my life when I was involved with a faith community and other periods when I was not. Growing up, my family was very involved with our Congregational church--my dad was a deacon and we attended faithfully. When my children were in early elementary school my two sons and I--but not my husband--became very involved with our Presbyterian church. I felt like the minister had an uncanny ability to preach the exact message that I needed to hear for that week. Reading Carolyn's book encourages me to find a faith community again.

Carolyn uses the golf metaphor of the "eagle"--two under par--to talk about balance, focus and lining up to the target in a person's relationship with Christ. Not being a golfer, I am probably missing the connections, but the book is much more about faith than golf.

I was really looking forward to reading this book, but I was very disappointed. As much as I tried to remain interested I could not because this book seems to be without much of an entertaining plot. I hate to give a bad review, but the only good thing I can say about this book is that the writer could have written a great story if they had only chosen a different topic.

You know what I like? Precious Moments figurines and the love of God. What do these things have in common? NOTHING. And neither does golf and the love of God.

This is an overpriced stocking stuffer for golf fans who mark themselves Christian on their social networking sites.
