I was very fortunate to read this amazing book. Do you know when great opportunities fall into your life when you’re least expecting it? This is how I feel about A Growth Mindset For Teens. I was needing some direction to connecting with my teen. I know it’s a natural state in life for our children to learn, grow, mature, and move away from their parents and caregivers. Yet I found myself struggling with how to communicate effectively with my teen, where it didn’t feel like it was forced or uncomfortable for both of us. I felt that every time I wanted to discuss something it would be received as a lecture.
I pride myself on having a strong connection with my kids yet entering the teenager years left me feeling like I was alone in uncharted territory. Reading this book and doing the activities helped me learn a lot about my own growth mindset, and to be honest a fixed mindset as well. I loved how the author broke down the difference between the growth and fixed mindsets, and the honesty of her own personal experience was valued and appreciated.
My favourite chapter was the one about rewiring the brain. As a person who works in research and is fascinated with neuroscience, the information about neuroplasticity and how it relates to the teenage brain had me taking notes like I was back in university! If you’re looking for a way to connect with your teen, this book is for you! I read it first and it’s written for teens and to reach your teenager where they’re at. I’m going to be gifting my own teen with a copy as a another tool for my toolbox of connection.
The things I liked about this book were that it moves at a fast pace informationally, the admonition to “challenge your thoughts,” and I love the phrase “Nothing grows in a comfort zone.” I also like how it explains neuroplasticity is real…we are ALWAYS changing for better or for worse.
As for the rest of my review, I am not sure it is a “fair” review because my main problem with this book is that it conflicts with my Christian worldview, but I realize the book never purports to be Christian.
There is a self-help worldview portrayed in this book that is in direct opposition to a Christian worldview. According to the self-help worldview, sin is a problem we fix in ourselves rather than God alone being able to help us with that problem we all have. It discusses the merits of “believing in yourself,” “self-esteem,” “positive self-talk as a superpower,” “having boundaries = self first and others second,” “having gratitude for ‘all the love the world has given me.’” It talks about muting your inner-critic (but it also might be your God-given conscience and it’s not wise to shut that up).
Basically, having a growth mindset = being a lifelong learner and realizing you have more control over what you are learning than you think, so be intentional with your thoughts, time and attention. I think the book written by the founder of the Suzuki Method called “Nurtured by Love,” (by Suzuki) does a better job at jogging our imaginations in this area so that we are stimulated to think differently about talents and what we are capable of. It is a short book, but can be hard to read because Japanese is his first language so some of the wording in English seems weird. Also “Practicing the Presence” by Brother Lawrence is a wonderful book about fixing our minds on God over and over every single second of the day and how that can stretch and shape us.
I have a younger 17 year old son stuck in negativity and apathy, unwilling to try new things, and afraid of failure. I hope to work though this book with him and help him regain his self esteem and confidence, and joy for life, to let him work out his life’s priorities and how he can achieve them. Wonderful book, as I say again, it should be read be almost everyone, we aren’t all as good in life as we would like to be, and this gives us the tools to go far further in developing as a happy and successful human in life. Hugely recommended.
An excellent resource for teens. It is written in a warm personable style without being condescending. The author outlines simple exercises for the reader to work through to help reset the brain. A book for all ages.
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who cares about the success and well-being of young people. Sheppard presents growth mindset concepts in a way that is easy to understand and implement. With practical strategies like reframing negative self-talk and a 31-day Growth Mindset Challenge, this book is a valuable resource for teenagers, parents, educators, and anyone working with young adults. Don't miss out on this amazing read!
Another great book by this author. I'd buy one for every teen I know! These are lessons that will prepare them for all aspects of life and adulthood and help them feel confident and empowered. It's well written, easy to absorb and put into practice, and engaging.
Read with my teen. He’s pretty “healthy” all around, but lots of good reminders and techniques for how to deal with hard situations and challenges as he continues through middle school and high school and beyond.
Great book for teens, a lot of information I already knew for myself but I will be keeping this book as a reference for my kids as they continue into teen years
3 ⭐️ I had to read the book for P.E as a makeup assignment, but the book was surprisingly okay. There were some parts were I felt it could have been shorter, but overall it is. Pretty decent book with good advice and takeaways.
Fantastic read for teens! It is 100% written at their level. I love the simplicity of the book. It is broken down into small sections, provides activities that teens would enjoy doing and focuses on a variety of skills for teens. All teens should be reading this book as part of their curriculum at school. I will be giving this book as a gift to important teens in my life! Great guide for parents too.
