When the elven king of death released me even though my existence is a threat to his kingdom, I took the opportunity to run. There is just one problem… I also fell in love with him.
Nothing like a little doomed love to add a dash of intrigue to life, right? Unfortunately, that’s not even the worst of it.
I’m a worrier on my best days, but with a psycho tracking my every move because he’s obsessed with killing me, I’ve graduated to the level of paranoid lunatic.
Even if I could forget about the tracker—not happening since he’s figured out the fastest way to get to me is to attack my adopted family—my regular life is also anxiety-inducing as the city of Magiford is brewing with trouble.
Someone is setting off increasingly powerful magical spells downtown, upsetting all the humans. The supernatural community is desperate to find the perpetrator, and the top leaders are convinced the psychotic tracker chasing me is in on it. Their solution? Use me to capture the tracker for questioning.
What none of us counted on was Noctus—the elven king of death—interfering. Turns out I might not be the only one to regret our parting. But is there any way he could help me, and still keep his kingdom a safe secret?
At least one thing is for sure: I’m in way over my head with this, and my gut is warning me that I’m about to test if cats really do have nine lives.
King’s Queen is the last book in the Gate of Myth and Power urban fantasy trilogy, and is part of the Magiford Supernatural City world. It is an adventure-filled and hilarious take on the Hades and Persephone myth, with a twist of mystery. It’s packed with humor, battles, and a sweet, slow burn romance between an outcast magic user and the deadly king of the elves.
My pen name is K. M. Shea, but my readers—I prefer to call them Champions—call me Kitty.
I love to write funny, clean stories with strong characters. Books like that are among my favorite to read so naturally I love writing stories like that as well. My philosophy is that life is tough, so books should be something that makes you relax and laugh!
A let down compared to the other two in the series. The story failed to absorb my attention in the way the first two did and I didn't really care what happened to Chloe. The resolution was kind of stupid and the overarching storyline barely moves... I understand that this series makes the author money, but it's really boring at this point - this mysterious collective of big baddies who do nefarious things and the heroine who won't compromise her morals of killing a baddie but it's ok that the main guy does...
Almost DNF, only finished it because I wanted to see what would happen. Don't know if I will read anymore from K.M. Shea.
This was much more wholesome than I expected. Even though Noctus and Chloe aren’t together at the start, there is never the question if they want to be. Outside circumstances forced them apart and they are solved (or you know murdered because Elven king of death) during the course of the book. So when they finally have the opportunity to be together, they take it. It was very low angst because of that. It does take quite a while for them to get together. It took them to 55% of the third book to even kiss for the first time. But their feelings are obvious and the slow-burn was definitely worth the wait.
I also loved Truck (Destruction). An ancient Elven heirloom and an incredibly powerful mass murdering weapon that happily says woo-woo when you talk to it? I love it. All the other characters tremble in fear in the background because the weapon is so powerful and should be revered and respected. Even Noctus was scared for Chloe when Destruction came out of the pocket dimension for Chloe. But meanwhile Chloe is just going at it with Truck, throwing it around, not a single care in the world. You really only see Truck and Chloe going at it in the final 10% and the epilogue, and for that reason those are my favourite parts of the book. Though Noctus rushing to save Chloe a couple of times also holds a place in my heart.
It was a cute book and I read it in one sitting. Some stuff was a bit confusing but honestly I was just there for the ride. The found family in this series is just chef’s kiss. All the characters close to the main characters had so much personality.
And that’s a lovely segue to my only cons of this book: all the antagonists had zero personality and agency. They didn’t even have names. They were some vague threat through the entire series and I was just waiting for the big bad to show, but they didn’t ever show.
I figured the big plottwist had to be a betrayal from either Shiloh or the Paragon or even Pat. Because no way was the author going to introduce a new villain at the end. But after the nameless lackeys were caught, it was just over. There was no big villain. I liked that there wasn’t a betrayal because that really didn’t fit the story but still. Chloe heard her stalker/tracker call someone on his phone about “his orders” and “the leader.” So, where was that? There was a big villain, but they’re just not introduced in this series.
I looked around and saw reviews on the author’s other series saying the same thing. So I guess the author is waiting to bring all the series in this world together. But that left this ending a bit lacking. I’m just waiting for the next series now to figure out what was going on in this book. I feel like that could have been explained more, even if it wouldn’t have been handled in this series.
Calling it now, the next series is about the Paragon (who turns out to be a hot buff young-looking dude under his glamour for romance reasons) and Shiloh. Because those two characters had so much build up for drama and character during this series but nothing happened. There is a story to be told there.
I recommend this series as a low angst fun urban fantasy. The romance was really on a back burner for the first 1,5 books, but after that it’s just really wholesome. The whole series could be described as wholesome tbh. Very cute and I will probably reread this sometime in the future.

The trilogy could've easily been one book and been much, much better. Too much filler, in general. I doubt I'll read more by this author because I just can't appreciate the indie author model of splitting one decent book into 3, adding a bunch of filler, and ending each one on a cliffhanger.
(5+ stars) - At last, at last - magically delicious! 💕
The excruciating wait is over, and it was so worth it!
The tracker continues to try to get Chloe, & she needs to put an end to it; however, she learns there's more to his presence in Magiford than shadow-stalking.
There's a lot going on, but the hard part was waiting for Chloe & Noctus to find a way to end their separation. I rarely cry over romances because the whole point of them is that the couple will be together by the end, but this had me tearing up several times in empathy.
So the story is exciting, the romance is so wonderfully satisfying, and we get so many answers at last - with enough of the overarching plot remaining to hopefully get many more future stories from it! (Please let there be one with a dragon shifter!!)
I have been waiting! And I so wanted it to be as good as books one and two. It did have the same characters and it was in the same tone etc, but the let down for me was after Chloe and Noctus got together. There didn’t seem to be any … more to them than before. I wanted more of their relationship, or how they are together…. I felt like they got together …. Said they loved each other … and nothing really changed. A couple kisses … she blushed … I jus wanted to see a development of them together. Like how book two advanced them.
One other major annoyance was how at the end Chloe asked Charon if ‘now’ she is worthy. Where did that come from? He never treated her as unworthy. And never made reference to it. It felt like a judgement on them both and I hated it.
I enjoyed it, but to be honest the first half was a real slog for me. It just felt like endless melodrama that I wasn't really buying. Given that Chloe and Noctus had only known each other for the summer - and yes, formed a real connection at the very tail end of that - it felt ridiculous for that to lead to months of melodrama and angst as neither of them actually did anything.
Because here's the thing: I just didn't buy that strong of a connection between them yet. Yes, they cared about each other, and had become friends. But like ... when they encounter their very first obstacle, and it goes like this --
"Well, I guess this is not going to work out between us." "No, looks like it isn't. Good luck to you." "Thanks, good luck to you too." (both part ways, with a sad look or two)
-- I mean, how much connection is really there when they don't even TRY to find a solution? They don't even discuss possibilities. They just immediately throw in the towel and go their separate ways. Yeah, they're sad about it, but they accept it. They were just the lame martyrs who immediately hurled themselves on the sword, accepting that they could never have something good in their lives.
Serious lame.
And that went on for HALF THE BOOK. I was gritting my teeth. Especially when, in this type of book, we know they'll be together at the end, and given the very little time left (given that we're in the last half of the last book), when the elves are finally revealed it's going to be a big nothingburger ... since we don't have the page time to work through a more serious reaction from the supernatural community.
And speaking of nothingburgers, there are a couple other things I want to talk about in spoiler tags. Please note that this book is the final book in the FOURTH trilogy in the overall Magiford series, and I'm going to talk a little about the previous trilogies in here, so if you haven't read them and don't want spoilers, beware...
I enjoy the overall series, but I am getting frustrated. Hazel/Killian are still my favorite trilogy, with Leila/Rigel a close second. This trilogy is a distant third (too much melodrama for me), and, well, I didn't like Pip and whats-his-name (yes, that's how much I really didn't connect to it, I can't even remember his name) so we won't even call that 4th place. Just last.
I like this author - though clean romance isn't really my thing, I like the characterizations, the world, the storytelling and so clean/chaste isn't a dealbreaker. I know I'll read the next series. But I hope there's real forward movement, or that will probably be my last.
I really don't know why it took me so long to read this. I actually did enjoy it but found it got ridiculously OTT by the end. And the really were no answers about the villains. So it was a little frustrating too.
Chloe and Noctus are pretending they don't know each other but they are both suitably unhappy. Fortunately it doesn't take too long before they are interacting again. I was glad the Tracker gets his just desserts long before the end of the book as well. Now there's the mysterious villain that the Tracker was working for. But I have to say that part was a let down. Maybe there's more info in another spin off story?
It was roll my eyes convenient how Chloe's siblings were suddenly so important in Magiford after only just moving there in the last book. And the end battle was too OTT for me. But I did like her new side kick that I had already guessed the truth about in the last book.
So, overall it was fun, somewhat silly, but in an entertaining way.
I love this book and series so much!!!! Sorry Pack of Dawn and Destiny, you’re now my third favorite Magiford series as Chloe and Noctus’s story has taken second place! Actually more accurately it’s tied for first with Hall of Blood and Mercy, soooo…I guess Pack of Dawn and Destiny CAN stay as second, lol! 😂
Chloe and Noctus are AMAZING and I love them so much! Chloe is SO me on a number of levels and grows so much and I’m so proud of her! Noctus grew too and seeing how sweet and protective he is of Chloe melts me every time. 🥰 They are just too cute and I’m so glad their romance drama got smoothed out, especially after Book Two’s killer sad ending that I’m frankly still not over, heh. Aristide, Ker, Charon, and French Fry remain amazing as always, and I just love these friendships to pieces, not to mention throwing in Chloe’s siblings into the mix was sooo much fun!
The plot was SOOOO intense I nearly screamed half a dozen times and boy oh boy are these bad guys in the background (who will from now on be referred to as “the organization”) really uping the tension and attacks on Magiford! Things were so intense either emotionally or physically throughout this whole book and I LOVED IT! Cannot wait to see what the author has up her sleeve for the next trilogy!
It was also SO MUCH FUN seeing various characters from the previous books come back and even just hearing names of others made me giddy (can you tell I’m an uber fangirl of this world? 😂😜). And the ending… *sighs happily* It made my happily ever after, fairy tale ending loving little heart so happy. 🥰🥰🥰
I adored this book and series and while I can’t wait for the next trilogy I also cannot wait until this series comes out in paperback so I can buy and read them all over again.
‼️Content‼️
Language: holy crap; geez; gosh; darn it
Violence: fighting with magic, weapons, and hand to hand (not detailed); injuries and blood (not detailed); a character gets a pretty bad concussion; several magical explosions (not shown beyond their aftermaths); a magical attack that causes people extreme pain; in the past a character killed their whole family to save the world
Sexual: kissing (not detailed)
Other: magic; vampires, werewolves, fae, wizards and other magical creatures/beings; a character is being stalked; death
As for the 1st 2 books, the pace was super slow throughout the book, and then at the end, the resolution is extremely fast and disappointing.
The love story is lacking and just feels too simple. The main characters don't have any chemistry, they just "love each other" for no reason at all.
I'm not sure how it is marketed, but it feels really young YA (an 11-year-old could read it) even if the main characters are all adults. The discrepancy between the age of the characters and the possible audience of the book/story disturbed me a lot, and, especially as far as the romance is concerned, often took me out of the story. I don't need openly spicy scenes, but the whole relationship felt so middle school (blushing when holding hands?!) when the characters are supposed to be adults! That was too unrealistic for me.
The book in itself is enjoyable, but it's definitely not great.
There are not enough stars for this book! I gobbled it up in a single day, and I have no regrets...except for the fact that I now have no more new Magiford for many months. Oh, well. I guess a re-read will be in order!
This book picks up a few months after the last one ended. There was some fun revelations in this book, and I can't wait to see how the big thing that happened at the end affects future Magiford stories!
Was difficult to finish this book. What happened to the badass protagonist who saved her family? I get that characters need to grow but it was getting infuriating with how incompetent and indecisive she was. The series went from fun action packed story telling to what felt like filler scenes and unnecessary dialogue.
I've really been looking forward to reading this final installment in the Gate of Myth and Power trilogy. Since it is the third book, I won't say too much, I don't want to give away any spoilers. The overall trilogy is a lot of fun and my favorite in the Magiford collection. I love the characters! I like a lot that the romance was upped from the previous books. I was once again sucked into the story and had hard time putting it down. I liked the pacing and thought it was well written. It does set up things for another series while nicely tying up the story of Chloe and Noctus.
For those you don't already know, Ms. Shea has created a fun adult Urban Fantasy collection set in the fun small town of Magiford. Each trilogy features different supernatural beings (wizards, vampires, fae, elves and werewolves so far). The main characters in each trilogy have their own stories going on, but there is a bigger story that spans the entire series. It's woven in in a way where you could read each series in any order and not really be lost though, I like that they can standalone, but it great to read them in order to since some characters make apperances throughout.
Overall, an enjoyable read and my favorite series in the Magiford collection. I look forward to reading more in this world.
Content Rated PG Clean romance, kissing. Mild violence, no language
Magiford Collection Hall of Blood and Mercy (features wizards & vampires) Court of Midnight & Deception (features fae) Pack of Dawn and Destiny (features werewolves) Gate of Myth and Power (features elves)
2.5 stars. Sadly I just didn’t enjoy this book as much as the other books in this series, and particularly not as much as other books/series set in this same Magiford world. I did enjoy KM Shea’s continued Magiford world building/her ability to connect these various Magiford series together! (And I’m very impressed she released an entire new trilogy at all on such a short schedule, especially amidst several personal health struggles!) Unfortunately though, I think the formula/character tropes for this particular trilogy were just too similar to the original Magic Forged trilogy. So I just couldn’t help but compare the two while reading, especially for this final book. And while I loved the original Magic Forged trilogy, this trilogy just ended up feeling a tad flat by comparison. I felt like this book really just needed another couple rounds of editing to help with the flow/pacing of the story. The 2nd half of the book in particular just really dragged for me, because the big climactic battle with the tracker, and the big fix for the romantic relationship, all happened only 50% of the way into the book… So while this book had some fun moments, and the continued Magiford world building was great, overall this book was just not my favorite from this author.

I’ve given up. DNF at 70% and it was an EFFORT to get there. The books in this series have steadily gotten worse from the very first and this is where I stop expending the effort and hoping for the quality to increase.
That's a wrap for this series and just....yeah, I loved it. Sped through it and can't give much a review because thoughts and slight indolence. But this just goes to show that you CAN write largely reactive/passive heroines and keep them so without making them unbelievable or annoying. Perhaps it may be frustrating to some but I'd say our heroine is veryyyy active in at least one area (running away), and even there she learns. I....very much appreciated such a heroine. And the hero was loads of fun, too, being someone who looks normal but is very much not (and so established so in book 1).
The side characters here are also incredibly colorful, and they round out the cast so well that the dynamics between everyone unfolds beautifully. And, hey, plot progression so woo!
Content: same as last two but, uh, romantic progression (nothing explicit or beyond pg 13, though) and violence (spoilers to follow but an on screen death of sorts. And blood mentions... which should be a given considering there are vampires)
Skim read just to find out what happened to the elves. Chloe and Noctus were so boring. Too much tell and not enough show. Also, I have a really hard time understanding how a hundreds year old being can be attracted to a 20 year old (side eyes Twilight).
What a FANTASTIC ending to this story! I absolutely adore all of the Magiford supernaturals and this books conclusion only solidified that fact. I can’t wait for more series in this world from Kitty!
I picked this series out because I was getting burned out on reg PNR. It was seeming as there was starting to be more sex than story. Not that I don't like that. But still too much. The blurb said this was a humorous read so I downloaded asap. And let me tell you it was just what I needed. A real good story and some really hot romance without every chapter ending with them getting naked. Now I realized my folly as this is just a part of a bigger world that I started in the middle. But it sure gives me quite a few more series I can laugh with and enjoy. So I will be checking out the rest of this Magifold world. Its going to be a blast
4.75 🌟! Even though the action scenes were epic there many loose ends. I loved so many things but hate it when questions are unanswered.
From book 1 itself I’m waiting for revelations of paragon’s glamour secrets, chloe’s parentage, and why the hell are the villains making all this ruckus in the town. I have been patient but these were not clear and I believe this series is now complete?
I skimmed my way through this very boring book hoping to find an exciting scene that could warm my heart the way that the first two books did, but there was none. The twist in the whole story was precisely how dry and boring it turned into.
