"Your prejudice is unbecoming, and it reflects poorly on us both." Night waved him over and accepted the circlet. It was cool to the touch. He examined the woven metal more closely. "But I admit I do at times forget that what family I've lost, you have also. Nevertheless, we cannot hold the actions of one against the whole."

"I won't doubt your instincts again, brother..." Erikson bowed low. "Frey Magis."

That was the great difficulty, wasn't it? Doubt. He was finished with the emotion. The gnat-like thoughts could go straight to hell. "Doubt me all you like. But never doubt her."

S.L. Prater books really are like warm and cozy hugs for the soul. They always leave me smiling and sighing contentedly, and King of Tricksters is no exception. It was a fantastic follow-up to Court of Tricksters with the same amount of emotion and feels and twists and spicy goodness. It picks up where Court left off, and all I have to say is that I absolutely love how badass Rain is... but I also love that she's not impenetrable or so good that nothing ever gets the jump on her. There is no shortage of Rain being that legendary warrior witch she's renowned as, but I love the balance of having her friends and found-family helping her bear the weight of all that rests on her shoulders. It's really what keeps her so relatable.

Bernard remains my absolute favorite character - his curiosities surrounding children and parenthood led to many a laugh, but he's still a bloodthirsty demon with a heart of gold (don't tell him that, though), and I adore him. Clapa was a wonderful addition that I didn't know I needed, too. I erroneously assumed she'd just be more comic relief and feral cuteness alongside Bernard's antics, but the twist at the end I did NOT see coming! So much more respect for that little mischievous fairy.

Speaking of twists - the revelations regarding Rain and her past were excellent; and they were the source of some fantastic tension, wonderful character development, beautiful relationships, and just some great moments overall.

Her relationship with Night left my heart aching on more than one occasion, and I had a hearty laugh when Bernard astutely pointed out that the man is emotionally constipated (and boy is he ever... do I get why? Absolutely. I'm just glad the man came to his senses sooner rather than later. And I also love the trust he and Rain share). Night and Rain definitely have some settling in they need to do with their relationship, and with a number of the revelations that come, there's some justifiable bumps - but as a reader, I was never left to wonder or question whether or not these two still loved each other, which made enduring those more tense moments all the more bearable.

The romance and spicy moments between these two were also excellent. We get a fantasy spin on "phone sex" à la long-distance telepathy, and I was here for it! lol

Sora really rose in my estimation, by the way; and the Mad Marquis? ADORE HIM. I want more.

There's just so many memorable characters... and some absolutely beautiful storytelling. This is without a doubt one of S.L. Prater's best written books to date.

Also, only Prater could make me freaking CRY over a goddamned tree (IYKYK).

The only note I have is that the third act/finale felt a smidge rushed, as this looming war has been hyped up for a while now, and while I was very gratified that Rain had to truly struggle to take out the big-bad (there were some AMAZING moments during that final battle and some great twists, btw), it did feel a little "blink and its over" - which didn't bother me so much, but I know some readers will more than likely struggle with that.

But the closure is absolutely solid and the ending is sweet. Rain really is such a wonderful heroine. I love her goodness, her compassion, her tenacity, her strength, her vulnerability... all of it. Our new Bloody Queen of Night is an absolute joy.

Loved this book. Love this universe of fae and witches and magic. If you're in the market for a great romantasy that is a quick read in comparison to some of the more popular multi-tomed epics out there, Fae Tricksters would make a wonderful weekend binge read!

"You're still not a terrible king. Because you're going to let me do what's best anyway." Emotion throttled her voice.

He was such a clueless fool to ever think that when the bond settled, his heart would do the same. The bond had certainly settled, but his admiration for her had only grown, his need for her with it. It had terrified him, that need, but now the idea of being without her was the most horrifying of all.

Love was not a fairy story.

It was her, his sweet Rain. He was looking at love. Talking to it. Bathing it.

He lifted her hand out of the water and kissed her knuckles. "Promise me once more that you'll take very good care of my wicked heart," he whispered.

Her eyes welled. "Your kind heart is my most favorite thing about you. Of course I'll cherish it always."

What an epic conclusion it was for Night and Rain’s story!
This is one of those books were fantasy is done right.

I loved how the story and the secrets started unravelling from the beginning itself. There wasn’t any unnecessary dragging or melodrama. So when the first twist hit, I was completely blown. And then it kept on coming. So many things from book 1 started to make sense.
Rain’s growth was astounding. Love her new blood thirsty attitude. Her last ‘most’ romantic gesture cracked me up so hard.

Also the plot and writing style is solid. It’s one of the the highlights of the book. And the subtle humour throughout the book is so good.

And Bernard- God, that familiar is the cutest. Just when I thought this Book couldn’t get anymore adorable, Fairies were introduced.
Lastly that epic battle was everything I wanted/anticipated.

Recommended, safe, not standalone and included in Kindle Unlimited.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

2023 Spring Bingo (#SpringIntoLoveBingo🌷): Shop Your Shelves

What I like about this series is that the relationship genuinely feels romantic. So much emphasis on mating rituals centered on touch (feeding each other, bathing each other, etc). Obviously physical intimacy isn't a requirement for a ship, but the details make their love a compelling read. The previous book ends on a cliffhanger that is quickly resolved in this book, so it wasn't that stressful.

On a worldbuilding front, Rain finally discovers her heritage and defeats the bad guy, to no one's surprise. Mild spoilers:

Kinda sad this couple's story is over, but I'll happily read other books set in this world. I believe WEDDED TO THE WANTON WITCH comes out in August.

Disclaimer: I received a free e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A deliciously romantic and breathtakingly epic conclusion to this fantasy duology. I love Rain and Night together SO much, and if book 1 was about Rain re-committing to life and choosing her future, this book is about what happens (and ALLLLL the power she brings down) when she finally regains her memories of the past and uses them to fight for her whole family. All the different pieces comes together very satisfyingly, and I enjoyed it SO much. I devoured it all on the very same day that my preordered copy arrived!

I thank the author for giving me an opportunity to read ARC in advance.

The story continues where book 1 ends and my god, what a ride! More actions, angst, secrets, past memories, and...spice. After Rain's grave injuries, her past memories comes back to her along with who and what she saw and it made a small conflict between her and her mate. In desperate to avoid a war, enemies turns to allies and they plan to take down their enemy King Yaga once and for all.

I loved Bernard and his banters was top notch. Especially with a fierce little fairy Clapa. There was a surprising twists and more romance and my favourite scenes was where Bernard first met Clapa and epilogue (you'll understand once you read).

Night and Rain was one my favourite cutest couples and I loved them soo much it hurts. It was sad to say goodbye to Nightrain but can't wait to read the next Tricksters story.

3.5 Getting to the Happily Ever After Stars

After the first book in the series I was eager to jump into the next as the main character was in a precarious position and what looked like certain death. I mean it looked like it but since the second book wasn't 20 pages we all know it wasn't going to happen. But still it left me longing to know what happened next.

This is a fitting conclusion to the love story started in the prior book. Rain will find out the past she left behind and Night will have to deal with who she really is, along with the rest of his court. Rain and Bernard's relationship is one of my favorites in the book as he is so much fun. When he finds out where babies come from it was really priceless.
“My very soul is exposed to you now. That’s worth some trepidation, I think.” He tried to smile to take the edge out of his words, but it didn’t hold.
It’s a lovely soul. But I refuse to be content with just your soul.
Night’s chest tightened. “Greedy,” he teased.
Night, when you’re finally ready to give me your heart, I promise you I’m going to take very good care of it.”

There are some great twists in the story and I did like how Night finally overcomes his declarations that he will never love Rain. Silly, man there is no denying your fated mate your heart. There are way more sexy times in this conclusion to Rain and Night's story and honestly I could have done without a few of the scenes to get to the fighting for the Realm and Night's claiming of his throne. But other than that a fun story.

I did like that there was no dishonesty between the two. When Rain discovered her past, she told him as soon as possible even through there was some fallout from it. I also loved how she had decided that no matter what he was hers, even if that meant she kidnapped him later. Turnabout is fair play after all.

I will look forward to continuing with some of the other stories in the series.

“Promise me once more that you’ll take very good care of my wicked heart,” he whispered.

Her eyes welled. “Your kind heart is my most favorite thing about you. Of course I’ll cherish it always.”

I kept my expectations relatively low for King of Tricksters after the first part, but I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn't all that too bad a read. The cover is stellar gorgeous - it's definitely one of the reasons why I took a chance with this!😍😍 I'm glad that it didn't waste any time, delving right back into the story of Rain and Night. The writing was very captivating - it was a lovely magical story that whisked you away on a wild action-packed journey of family drama and wartime dispute of Seelie and Unseelie. There was a wistful touch to the words - almost melodious in a strange sense that carried you through Rain and Night's thoughts.

“We’re not exactly the same . . . I would do far worse than Isla to anyone who hurt you, Night. Anyone who even contemplates taking you from me will suffer under my dagger. No one would survive me.”

A satisfied grunt rumbled deep in his throat. “It does things to me when you vow violence on others in my name.”

Rain is such a fierce brave FMC - I liked how much stronger and surer she was of herself. We got to see more of her own personal life, the ties she has with a family she didn't know about, and the family that wants to tear her apart. As she regained her memories and her strength, she became a force to be reckoned with even more! ⚔️🐉 So very confident and brave as a warrior, beautifully devoted to her husband, Rain, but still maintains that majestic air of respect and still channels her love and affection for her beloved familiar, Bernard. Bernard, the true MVP of this duology - loved him in the first book - loved him and his deadpan hilarious comments and fierce loyalty even more this time.

I also appreciated how there was more depth given to Night's character - as a fae king, he's shouldering a heavy burden, even more so once he finds out Rain's true identity - but how he's able to look beyond that - maintain an air of maturity and level-head made him an admirable MC. And so very passionate and generous lover, too! The spice level definitely maxed out this time around! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 The trust Rain relinquished to him in bed as they wrapped themselves around each other was so very hot and tempting! And dirty, too! That one instant where she knelt before him and he gripped her and hauled her up and declared that the Queen doesn't bow down to everyone, my heart skipped a beat!

“You taste too wild and dangerous to be just fae, just a witch.” He lapped at her, one slow deliberate lick after another. “I really should have known. My little goddess.”

I especially enjoyed how they could telepathically communicate with each other - even going so far as to something equivalent to 'phone sex'! 🤤🤤 Once Rain gave him her full consent, Night never shied away from showing how much he still was hopelessly devoted to her - regardless of the many reveals about her family were difficult for him to accept.

I liked how all the plot lines were well-resolved - there was a great battle scene towards the scene, that was both engaging and riveting. Seeing Rain on the battlefield triumphant alongside Night was a beautiful sight and the dragons surging to life was a breathtaking description. The writing and pace of the story was steady and solid - and for fans of fae and magic and beautiful romance, this one will certainly be a winner for you. ✨✨✨✨

I've been waiting to read this as soon as I finished the first book. It's just as good as the first book, picking up where that one left off. Prater strikes a good balance between building emotional moments and moving the story along. Rain and Night are just so sweet together and balanced out by the violence they both inflict for each other. I'd like too if the guy I love promised me the head of my enemies. The book starts off slow and by the end is a bit of a runaway train. Definitely would recommend reading both books one after another. The ending was very satisfying. King of Tricksters by S.L. Prater
Fae Tricksters #2

Recommend reading Court of Tricksters first before reading this one but also recommend having this one immediately available as soon as you finish the first book in the series! This was a great story and carried on right from where the first book left off.

What I liked:
* Rain: witch, ancient, battle-scarred, empathetic, caring, strong, indomitable, has a demon familiar, communicates with the trees, impressive, intriguing, mate of the Lord of the Lunar Court, left near death at the end of Court of Tricksters, has a dragon to destroy before the end of the book
* Night: Lord of the Lunar Court, Fae, powerful, strong, wise, intriguing man, magic skills, grows to deeply care for Rain, conflicted over his duties as a king and as a mate, caring, has some growing to do before the end of the story
* Bernard: Rain’s familiar, a demon, shapeshifter, protective, mind-link with Rain, made me smile
* Clapa: tiny fairy that plays a big part in this story – loved her interactions with Bernard and others
* The way Rain regained her memories, healed herself, found her sisters, and dealt with the obstacle preventing peace in the region
* The plot, pacing, and writing
* The conclusion and how everything was wrapped up in the end
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Wondering if the author will write more about these characters in the future.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I received an ARC Copy of this book, this review is from my own thought 😍

This story was just amazing !!! Every little bit of it, it’s a great mix of magic, sentiment, action - it’s hard not to like every character, and each of them is so different and has its rightful place in the plot.

I’m very fond of Rain, she’s been through a lot, lot but it only made her stronger - she’s a fierce witch and warrior but she has this gentle side of her that makes you melt and sigh. Her relationship with Bernard is just so cute and he’s one of the best, always making us laugh with his concepts about humans and now babies 🤣
Night was even more interesting in this second part, there is a depth to him that really stand out. He’s a trickster but he’s not infallible, his sense of duty is strong but it should not be everything, trust must be freely given and love conquer all.

War is at their doorsteps, hurt, secrets, past and present clashing, trust - love… many things can happen and the journey is worth it !! This story is magic and should be read !!

Rain is a bloody legend, Night must get past his emotional constipation, and Bernard ( the demon familiar) wants a baby-- no, not to eat.
.
I loved this book. I love the characters and the added complexity of remembering a forgotten past that's also been lost in the tomes of history and having it collide with the current predicament. I did not say love too much because it's not possible where this book is concerned.
.
This book kept the romantic tension while making the sweet moments melt worthy, upped the spice and the fight scenes, and still managed to intersperse the funnies. Bernard remains the best. This was just a story full of so many wonderful things of both entertaining and contemplative natures.
.
I did a re-read with the audiobook. The narration of this one was just as delightful as the last. Hearing the Mad Marquess had me squealing with delight! I will say that Sora's accent was a bit inconsistent, but not so much that I was too bothered by it. Overall, a great narration!

Brace yourself, this one is going to be epic.
First off: this book is part of a duet. Court of Tricksters is the first book, and King of Tricksters is the second. You really need to read Court of Tricksters first, before you begin with King of Tricksters.
Read further at risk, because there are spoilers for book 1 in this review.
Court of Tricksters finished on a terrible, unfair cliffy. And we hate those, but we also love SL Prater so we tolerate it. Also, the ending for me didn’t feel like a totally dark situation. We know Rain. We know she is not who she thinks she is. We know she is more. So some stupid mages, send to kill her by a douchebag dragon king will not keep her down. Also Night will save her. Or at least he will want to save her - changes are she has already saved herself.

The book enfolds in a brilliant way. We start with the rescue (duh) and the story takes from there. Night goes doing things Night does, and Rain is recovering from her ordeal. Amidst this process she remembers and finds her true self. I am already shivering as I write this, because it is epic. Just EPIC. The emotions written in this story, they are a masterpiece. I was crying people. Crying over a TREE. And not a couple of dainty tears, no bawling my eyes out. It was so beautiful.

What can you expect from this book? Well, all the feels. Keep the tissues close. Also, we know Night and Rain tend to be a little blood thirsty. Expect more of that. Bernard, our favorite crazy demon gets a bigger role and he is just adorable (buit don’t tell him I said that).
The story is quite the slow burn, spread out over 2 books, but book 2 is definitely more spicy. I tend to like my books on the spicer side, but I really don’t miss it in this story. It is just so good.
We get to know a couple of characters in book 1, and they stay for book 2. There is a surprising plot twist, when Rain finds her way back to her true identity and that has a true impact on the outcome of the war. Because war was always coming. The battle is super, and truly shows the awesomeness of Rain.
And then there is the Happily Ever After. Ofcourse.
This book is going on my epic list for sure! If you want to chat about it, hit me up! <3

This is the conclusion to the Fae Tricksters duology by @slpraterwrites . I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. And thank goodness I got an arc because I could not have waited any longer.

Magic, stabby women, dragons, and cat demons. Is there literally anything else I could want?

I absolutely devoured this book. Everything about it is like a comforting hug and I would stay in this universe as long as it would have me.

Everything comes together in this book and any questions I had were wrapped up in a happy ending bow, which is all I can ask for (aside from some spice, which I also got 🫣)

This spice is here and in full action, we love the tenderness and a man who talks you through it. Rain finds herself and gets some confidence and we love a gal who knows what she wants 🌶️ (There are still some scenes that fade to black)

I love all these characters and feel so deeply attached to them and their journey.

Night and Rain are both so strong and hot, I could read about them feeding each other bread 🍞 every day and never tire of it (the washing scenes would be a close second)

Did I see the demon force that is Bernard to want a kid? No. Does it warm my heart watching him raise his crazy murder baby? Absolutely.

The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is I felt there was room to expand on the story. We covered a lot of ground in one book which I love, but felt like there could’ve been more meat to it(aka I wanted MORE)

I finished the book in like three sittings and that's because I had to make myself read slower (I was so immersed in the story - LOL).

I really enjoyed this continuation. It started with a bang and got better and better.

The pace is perfect for me and I was on my toes all the time.

I really appreciate the growth of the characters and the communication between them - It's rare to read about a healthy relationship like that.

Also loved all the new characters I think they managed to elevate the story even more.

The weakest part for me was the third act. This war that was so hyped-up it felt super rushed. Everything happened in a few pages and I expected more.

I think it needed more chapters to be able to really expand and be as grand as what it was promised.

Now I'm sad because it's over but I can't wait for the next couple to make it's entrance.

So I was left reeling after Court of Tricksters. There are so many things about their relationship with each other that had me half pulling my hair out and half falling over with their cuteness. There is a very distinct attraction they have for each other that refuses to be so named. And it's that anticipation of what's to come that has me gripping my kindle and waiting for it to be put to light. Court of Tricksters ended with me on the edge of my seat; and King of Tricksters helped me understand the two better and see the way they work together perfectly. I love that the development of Night's character also unfolded. This book felt like a perfect closing to their story and I am very satisfied. Now, I want to read the 2 books again in one go to better appreciate it haha

I was eagerly awaiting the release of this book after the cliffhanger in Court of Tricksters and it did not disappoint. The King of Tricksters had everything that I enjoyed about the first book, plus some interesting twists and turns I wasn't expecting. We catch up with Rain, her familiar Bernard, and her mate Night as they prepare to confront Yaga, the Dragon King. With unlikely allies, Demon familiars, and a vengeful fairy they may just be able to defeat the Dragon King and bring peace to the Night Court.

There was lots of action, adventure, romance, and some spice in the King of Tricksters which made for a quick, enjoyable read. I look forward to meeting some new characters in the next book of the series!

In comparison to the previous in this series, this book is all action. There is love of course, there is romance, and there is a kidnapping. There is also lots of fighting, defeating of great evils and concessions to maintain peace between kin. We also find out the past of Rain which is interesting and plays a major role in how the plot goes. Best of all our trickster king, Night learns what love means. So all in all a good book. This is an amazing end to this duology. I was so excited to learn more about Rain’s past and how it does affect her relationship with Night. I felt bad for Benard for a demon he’s so innocent for something that’s supposed to be evil, but it was also hilarious. The sweet romantic moments are swoon worthy and the fight scenes were so good. I can’t wait to read more of the author’s work.

This was a strong sequel in the Fae Tricksters series, it does everything that I was hoping for from the first book. The characters felt like they belonged in this world and continuing the story. I was engaged with this world and glad I got to read this. I hope there is more in this series as I enjoyed the way S. L. Prater wrote this and the first book.

"His heart and his head fought with one another, and his instincts played magistrate. And the whole thing made him weary down to his very soul. Now that he knew the truth about Rain, he needed time away from her to figure out his head and his heart before they tore him apart."

This starts off right where book 1 left off with Rain being taken and injured.

Deep down I knew nothing would keep Night from finding her and saving her but I was still anxious to see what happened.

With many misunderstandings and identity reveals this book keeps you on your toes right until the end. But one thing you can count on is the connection between Night and Rain.

I am happy to say I was right about Rain's former identity just not 100% at the details.

Love how everything played out and in so happy I found these books.

I loved this book as I knew I would. They are never long enough. Such an amazing story this was.
A beautiful ending to this one but I still want more. I want the story of Sora and her mate now so bad. I also wouldn’t mind just an entire book about Bernard being a dad at all actually.
Strong female characters that take no B.S. and have each others backs will always make a book great to me. I did expect the war stuff to last longer but I’m glad it didn’t.

excellent

A wonderful conclusion for our fated love story. I love all of Ms. Prater’s books and this is no exception. There are plenty of feelings and emotions in book 2 and they come from the pages directly into your heart. The humor with Bernard are some of my favorite scenes. Toward the end when he was gagging on a hairball is one of my favorite lines. You’ll know it when you read it!

👑 ~ We finally find out find out who our shy ancient witch is... and wow. We also get to know who is the real evil 😰
I need more goddesses in books🥰 just wow
I love a reveal of a secrete name... and Knight's name was a good (how did you come up with that? 🤣)

⚔ ~ How can such a small book takes us through such a whimsical and magical adventure? Witches, fae, elves, dragons, mages, demons, fairies, damn! Now, your question is: did it feel overwhelming? No! It felt natural as in a Ghibli movie.
Of course butterflies, witches and dragons would end up in that!
Yes, I cried twice over trees!

🌎 ~ True whimsical, magical and fairy-tale world

The Bloody Queen of Night has my heart. This duology is so deeply romantic and beautifully written. You find yourself savoring each word and not wanting the story to end.

This one picks up right where the previous book ended and the stakes are so much higher now. Rain has regained her lost memories and remembers her previous life and it's a doozy, especially to her beloved Night. There's no instalove here, folks. Bless Night and his stubborn heart. Bernard is continously delightful. And I'm dying to know more about Sora and her mate.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the ending to Rain and Nights story. I love Bernard and am happy rain had him during all her challenges she faced. I love Night and Rain and I am so glad that they had a happy ending. I enjoyed all the backstory and learning who Rain truly is and how much growth she had in this book. The ending was great and I couldn't think of a better way to end Rain and Nights story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I'm so glad I came back for the second book in the Rain-Night duology, because I don't think I would have let my mind rest otherwise!

And overall, I liked it.

As a warning to other readers: the first half of the book is very slow. Nothing actually happens, and our heroine is basically down for the count, until she accepts the inevitable, bites the proverbial bullet, and MAKES the choice to heal, which in turn unearths those pesky memories that, if you'll remember, were NOT remembered and VERY well forgotten all through book one.

In doing so, we finally get to sink our teeth into the world-building, the inter-connections between all the characters, the trickery that reaches back hundreds of years, and the very simple fact that these books really need to be read right after another because the information, kept as it is to the last pages of the books, flows hard and fast once it starts.

I will say this, that Rain grew on me, particularly once she stopped being that timid little shy creature and actually started taking action and responsibility. I'm not particularly fond of the little trick she plays on Night, because I firmly believe his circumstances and hers are wildly and vastly different BUT she at least DOES something.

We get information on Sora, Yaga, Isla, everyone really, though I'll admit, with the book being as short as it is and everything filled mostly towards the last half, both the first and second in the duology could have benefited from slight expansions.

There's just SO MUCH in there and for a lot of it, we're supposed to simply understand, even after hearing it for the first time.

... I'm still trying to figure out how the Elves and Fae came about, how specifically the Vanir are mixed into this, and then I *think* I know how the Seelie and Unseelie and Lunar Fae came about (throw in Frey too and, well, you've got yourself a cluster). As you can see, there's a lot going on, and a lot of the information is dropped onto the reader with an expectation, I feel, that we're supposed to just KNOW. I'm not sure whether this has all been talked about before, if ALL the author's books are inter-connected - I didn't get that feeling when I started the first book of this one, but it would account for why we would supposed to be familiar with all of it, and as such, a warning might have been good to include.

That's my reason for giving this four stars. I like to think of myself as a pretty decent reader, but with all the terminology used so loosely and interchangeably, I struggled. I'm sure others have, too.

However I like the ending, and enjoyed the read enough that I was quite invested in the outcome. So for that, four stars.
