I'm the first person to review this book on GR, lol.

We surprised the kids with a Siamese kitten for Christmas this year and I secretly read this book in preparation. I've always been more of a dog person and have never owned an indoor cat, but the kids have been dying for a pet for years and we are finally in a position to own one. A cat seemed like a good compromise—not as messy and high maintenance as a dog but more rewarding than, say, a pointless hamster. We decided on a Siamese because 1) they are supposedly hypoallergenic 2) they are low-shedders and 3) they do not fit the stereotype of the aloof, moody cat and are more dog-like in nature. We've had our new Siamese kitten, Ajax, for one week now and he has 100% lived up to his Siamese reputation. He's vocal, fearless, playful, cuddly, follows us everywhere (he's on my lap as I type this), and is just all-around wonderful. He's basically a dog who uses a litter box.

Anyways, this book. It's helpful but way over the top. I plan to be a good steward of this pet to the best of my ability but this book contains many recommendations that are not practical. (Ex. crawling around your entire house on your knees to see it as your cat will see it.) Also, it's a bit fear mongering, claiming that if your children are too excitable when meeting your new kitten for the first time, the kitten will be scarred for life and hate kids forever. How do you surprise four unsuspecting kids with a new kitten and have them not be excitable? Ajax recovered just fine.

I came across this YouTube video on how to prepare for a new kitten and I found it pretty helpful, maybe more so than this book:
