I almost wished I’d never agreed to become alpha. I’m not as strong as they think I am.
Jackson has always watched out for his friends. When they made him alpha, he thought he'd be better at it. But between the fire, the move, and the crew, he was barely keeping it together. So when a beautiful broken woman shows up needing the crew's protection, he's determined not to get close to her. He's got enough on his plate. But he's drawn to her in ways he can't explain. He needs to figure out how to protect her while keeping her at a distance or risk losing his head and his crew at the same time.
Esme just wanted to become a painter. So how did she end up here? When she trusted the wrong man to keep her safe, she ended up trapped in a relationship that threatened to destroy her. In a desperate attempt to escape, she asks the local crew for help. Now, while struggling to figure out her next move, she finds herself overwhelmingly distracted by the quiet and elusive alpha who gives her the one feeling she craves. Safety. She's afraid to trust her gut with her poor track record with men but when her ex manages to find her, Jackson may be the only person who can truly save her from her fate.
A.F. Montoya is a daydreamer turned writer who writes contemporary mafia romances. She’s been reading romance novels since her mother bought her one as a joke when she was a teen and now writes them and shares them with her mother, much to her chagrin. She enjoys reading in her spare time and supporting other authors. When she isn’t writing or thinking about new book ideas she is supporting her husband and kids.
I don’t mind gentle, a little bit shy, or even submissive overtones. But flat out submissive FMC’s are not actually to my taste.
That said, it was still a good story, and I liked the MMC. I’m a huge fan of the found family, just wish there was a bit more substance to their interactions. A lot of it feels more surface and superficial.
Okay, biggest issue with this one, is the absolute no no’s with the main relationship. The author couldn’t have written a more inappropriate setup for a domestic abuse survivor, still in hiding from her abuser, with no counselling.
She’s in a relationship with the guy protecting her, providing the roof over her head, all her groceries and financial needs, owns the land they ALL live on, and owns the business she’s been working at. On top of this, her entire friendship, support, and protective networks, are connected through him.
She is literally 100% dependant upon him. 🤣 The only way you could get more inappropriate, is if he had some sort of abusive tendency [he doesn’t]. 🥱
Good thing it’s a supernatural fantasy, and not contemporary.
Last, small, gripe. Normally the author does a great job [minus all the tears 😋], with the dialogue. But with this FMC, it often feels a bit stilted and awkward. At a guess, I’m thinking she fortunately doesn’t have a lot of experience with DV.
It’s not award winning, trail blazing, and definitely not informative or educational. But it is heartfelt, sweet, and mostly enjoyable.
It fits it’s genre, and target audience mostly. It has a WAY more satisfying ending then B1.
Right on the heels of Derek, the author dangles an abused heroine in my face and it was all over. Total catnip for me, I loved every second of Jackson's struggle to keep his crew together and keep Esme safe. Esme is precious and spends the book learning her worth and escaping the abusive jerk who wanted her submission. A lot of this book takes place at Jackson's family mechanic shop, and the threads of the tapestry of the whole series are woven here. But, the author never loses sight of keeping this book compelling, all while setting up ripples that extend many books out. It's all so well balanced, I love these books.
OK so these are my new obsessions! The Black Ridge Haven shifters!😘 MS Montoya is very talented as a storyteller, and I can't wait to get my hands on more of her books!
