This is a fine book. It is particularly useful for researchers and supervisors working in nations where coursework is not part of a doctoral programme. It is idea for supervisors, examiners, postgraduates and administrators to read, as it provides a guide through expectations, aspirations and motivations.

There is attention to life as much as research and creating the balance between the pressures of doctoral education and maintaining a stable family life and career. Specific doctorates - such as the creative doctorate and those partnered with industry - are discussed. It is very pleasing to see an outstanding chapter about and for students with impairments and how they can negotiate and manage doctoral education.

Recommended. Excellent.
