8 Tiny Reindeer: An Advent Calendar Adventure

Rate this book
In this modern holiday tale, based on the podcast of the same name, two resourceful elves help Santa try to save Christmas from an evil tech baron! In the not-too-distant future, Santa’s entire operation has been automated. Machines, not elves, make all the toys. And drones transport the presents around the world on Christmas Eve, not Santa’s reindeer. Since Santa no longer needs much help, he’s let go all but two of his elves, Elvis and Delfina, and released his 8 tiny reindeer into the wild. Only, just days before Christmas, Santa learns that the wealthy tycoon who supplied him with all his technology, Larchmont Quickbuck, is plotting to take over Christmas and send Santa packing! Santa knows his only hope of saving the holiday from Quickbuck is to bring back the true source of Christmas magic — his 8 tiny reindeer. But will Elvis and Delfina find them in time? This highly entertaining graphic novel by Robert Tinkler — a writer, podcast producer, voice actor and Daytime Emmy nominee — is based on his podcast of the same name, which is listened to around the world. The holiday adventure story with a modern twist is structured like an advent calendar, with one chapter for each day of December leading up to Christmas Day (though many readers won’t want to wait!). Each spread is chock-full of Danesh Mohiuddin’s high-energy illustrations. Loaded with contemporary takes on familiar characters, such as a tech-challenged Santa and selfie-obsessed elf, this action-packed, hilarious and heartfelt book is destined to be a Christmas classic!

This is such a fun action-packed graphic Christmas book. It's loaded with adventures and amazing illustrations to accompany the narrative. The chapter a day format also adds to the festive experience. The story is very timely as we seem to be headed in the direction of drone deliveries. What would Christmas look like without Santa and his reindeer? Fortunately, this book makes sure we don't have to answer that question just yet!

I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you so much to Kids Can Press and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

An advent calendar comic book format telling a story where Christmas isn’t the same any more since Quickbuck started using his technology for everything. Santa’s elves and reindeer are gone and Quickbuck wants the whole holiday. Santa and his two remaining elves have to figure out how to get the factory working again, and search for the 8 tiny reindeer and bring them back.

A very interesting take on the holiday due to this world I can totally see the idea behind it with technology already taking over massively. I liked that though Santa thought it was the right idea he eventually figured out that it wasn’t and that it’s supposed to be magical and that it is his job to provide that happiness.

Quckbucks was a power hungry mad man a typical business tycoon who wanted to destroy and rule over everything and who is typically a bully to his employees and especially family employees. I liked that his nephew eventually turned to Rudolph for help and they started to work together. I thought it was really clever and interesting having him as a villain type for Santa so he had something to fight against and to fight for what mattered to him most.

This is a very unique story, with a unique comic book concept, done in a calendar style where you read a chapter a day. It was nice seeing a story like this told in a comic book. It was a unique and fun read and I think it will be a popular Christmas read for many. The story is very different to most others and is funnier and modern, all the characters were interesting and I think it’s a cleverly made story and comic.

What a fun read for all ages! I loved this graphic novel about how much technology has overtaken society! Now it’s even affecting Santa and his workshop. The jokes are super cute, and the story had some surprising twists and turns that I really didn’t see coming! I also liked how it was set up like an advent calendar, so kids could read it one day at a time if they wanted to and finish on Christmas Day! In general though, it’s a pretty quick read, and everyone can find something to love about this story. I definitely recommend grabbing a copy for Christmas this year!

I love the concept of a graphic novel "advent" calendar Christmas book! Early on in the book, I thought maybe it would be something that might encourage my young nephew to read ... but I'm afraid he is a bit too young for parts of the book.

I liked most of the book, but there were a couple "days" in the advent book that I thought were a little weird.

Santa had been relying on outsourced delivery of Christmas gifts; but now needs to save Christmas and unify his team of reindeer that had been disbanded once drones started delivering Christmas packages.

This graphic novel was very creative.

I don't usually read graphic novels, but I did enjoy this one.

Thank you to NetGalley (for yet once again, introducing me to a "new to me author"). And thank you for the opportunity to provide an honest review in exchange for the opportunity to read the advance read copy of 8 Tiny Reindeer. Also thank you to author Robert Tinkler and illustrator Danesh Mohiuddin. Thank you to Kids Can Press for approving my NetGalley ARC request.

Really cute graphic novel that is meant to be read like an Advent calendar, one chapter a day. Kids might really enjoy that but I liked to read it all the way through.

Santa has given up most of his magic being the head of Christmas to technology. He has let go of his Reindeer and all but 2 of his Elves. But when the man behind the technology wants to make Santa fully retire, Santa sees the error of his ways and tries to correct it by getting his shop working again with Elves and delivering presents with his Reindeer.

The message is great, that we can't always rely on technology or expect it to work for us always in the best way. Christmas without the magic of believing in Santa is just sad for those that believe!

Let's just say I would have this low down my list of priorities when it comes to new books for Christmas 2023. A comic about an oligarch taking over Christmas, and then shutting the whole North Pole operation down at a crucial moment as Santa refuses to quit, it features two rather unlikeable characters seeking out the eight magic reindeer to get the ball rolling again. Reader, I'd quit before even one of them was found. Nothing really engaged, and the messy, wordy nature of it all is probably why we are recommended to read it in 25 daily chunks. Either that, or that idea is an admission this really isn't half as addictive as it ought to be.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read this book and provide my honest review.

In a world very close to current times, Santa is in trouble and has to rely on the help of two elves to make sure Christmas happens.

This book is tongue-in-cheek, exciting to read, and easily digest-able in its graphic novel format.

Designed so as to have a chapter per day leading up to Christmas like an Advent calendar, 8 Tiny Reindeer is fun romp that will entertain children and adults alike.

The sass of the reindeer is hilarious, and I loved how the different characters each had the room to be developed, making the story all the better.

Perfect gift for counting down to Christmas, with each chapter for each day of December leading up to Christmas Day. Children ages 7-10 years old will absolutely LOVE this book!

Will be rereading this with my boys next month as we count down to Christmas!

I'm a huge graphic novel fan but I've got to say, I've never seen one this cute! What do you get when you cross Santa, some elves, and reindeer with amazing illustrations? I super-duper, awesome, and amazing graphic novel!

The adventures of Elvis and Delphina are hilarious and entertaining. This is the perfect gift for the countdown to Christmas. Each chapter leads one step closer to the big day. Though this book is for children 7-10 years old, I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with it. I'd welcome more books from this dynamic duo.

Santa has outsourced his toy making and toy delivery to Larchmont Quickbuck. Since Santa is using Quickbuck's technology he doesn't need the reindeer and elves so they have all been sent away except for Elvis and Delphina. However, Quickbuck's real goal was to take over Christmas and make it totally a commercial venture. So now it up to Elvis and Delphina to help Santa save Christmas. Arranged like an advent calendar, this is 24 days of fun with tons of Christmas spirit! A wonderful Christmas book that is perfect for the season!

8 Tiny Reindeer

By Robert Tinkler and Danesh Mohiuddin

This is cute and funny story of a not-too-distant future where Christmas is is trouble - as Santa's left with only two elves and no reindeer - and machines build toys and drones deliver them in Christmas. But - too much technology might actually destroy Christmas. Can Santa and his two elves save Christmas by finding the - 8 Tiny Magical Reindeer?

Gorgeous artwork throughout the book, just elevates the essence of the story and makes it a fun read.

Highly recommended for all age group.

This book was so cute!!! My son, who loves graphic novels, absolutely had the time of his life reading this book each night in December. The chapters are small (which is great for emerging readers or kids who get easily overwhelmed by books). The illustrations are super cute and really make the story come to life. And the premise was absolutely genius!!! Big thumbs up! We will be reading this each and every year. HIGHLY recommend this as a new advent adventure!

8 Tiny Reindeer is a graphic novel for elementary readers. It would be great for reluctant readers at Christmas time. Readers follow elves and Santa and Rudolph as they realize they have been manipulated by a wealthy tech entrepreneur. They have to detach from technology to save Christmas. I know I wouldn’t be able to do that. The story is fun and full of action.

🎅 A PERFECT CHRISTMAS BOOK - STOCKING STUFFER IDEA🎅

1. 𝑪𝒍𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 - This is such a clever take on the age-old Santa and his reindeer story. Kids of all ages will love the modern twist on it!

2. 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 - A reminder that sometimes things were okay before the explosion of technology. It isn’t always the answer to everything!

3. 𝑹𝒖𝒅𝒐𝒍𝒑𝒉 - Rudolph finds something out about himself that he has a hard time coming to terms with, but once he accepts it, he finds how unique he really is.

4. 𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 - Phenomenal graphics throughout this story. Colorful and detailed - they will keep the attention of anyone who reads this.

5. 𝑬𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 - While the story everyone knows has the elves just as Santa’s helpers, we find them with a whole other life in this story. And Santa comes to some realizations about that at the end!

I love the idea of this graphic novel: An advent calendar style story that can be read as a family each day during the Christmas season. But it tries to impart so many morals that it becomes a bit chaotic. I do love the lessons, though: Christmas is not the only holiday and we can help others to celebrate their own holidays, accepting those that are not like us because they still have value, anticapitalism, technology is not always the answer, and taking time to appreciate those who help us and are around us is more important than constantly focusing on our work. They just get muddled and not completely evaluated. The art style is not my favorite, but very similar to “Bone”.

This is my new favorite Christmas book! It is absolutely packed with Christmas spirit and hijinks. I smiled throughout the whole thing. Quintessentially Christmas. Modern, but timeless. Fun, quirky and perfect for the whole family.

And I loved the advent calendar format. Starting on Dec 1st you read a chapter a day, up through Christmas. However, I was so enamored that I blew through the whole thing in a single sitting. But whether you read it over the course of the month, or in a single sitting, this book will fill you with Christmas spirit. A perfect holiday gift for friends, family, and yourself!

I had so much fun reading this one! Set up like an advent calendar, the chapters correspond to the days of December leading up to Christmas. Did you know that the reindeer are the true magic of Christmas? The story is about a futuristic Christmas when Santa has been given technology by a tech company that makes elves and reindeer obsolete. Then said tech company gets a little greedy and trouble abounds!

I loved the various elf characters and the role of tech in the story. Such good messages about accepting who you are, helping others even when they weren't kind to you, and family ❤️

A unique graphic novel Christmas story when Mr. Quickbuck with the help of his nephew Godfrey, tries to overthrow Christmas. Using technology to shut down Santa’s workshop Quickbuck then gains control of Santa’s 8 reindeer.
