Rate this book
Through her life story, rising Republican star Senator Katie Britt shares some candid advice for how to overcome personal challenges, appreciate blessed moments, make our lives more fulfilling, and keep an unshakeable faith in God, family and our country.

With grit and grace, Katie Britt has tackled a lot that life’s thrown at her. From working in her parent’s hardware store, to finding her path at the University of Alabama and marrying the captain of the football team, to an extremely close call with a tornado that destroyed her house while she held her baby in her arms, to her upstart campaign for Senate, Britt has overcome setbacks, defied expectations and shocked the political establishment.

So how did Britt become the youngest woman in the U.S. Senate? GOD CALLS US TO DO HARD THINGS offers the hard-earned lessons and common-sense advice that Britt gained from her experience – and it’s the kind of stuff many young folks need to hear. Topics and themes

Warm, humble and often lighthearted, GOD CALLS US TO DO HARD THINGS   is about how a determined young woman decided to enter the arena and make her mark. At a moment when politics feel so toxic and broken, Katie Britt proves that there’s still a way to listen to your heart, serve and inspire.

I received a free copy of, God Calls Us to Do Hard Things, by Katie Britt, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Katie Britt has some really good advice, in this book. Katie is a senator from Alabama, wife, mother, Christian, etc. I really enjoyed this book.

In all honesty, I would not have chosen to read this book. But it was gifted to me so I figured I’d seize the opportunity - and I’m glad I did.

Political parties aside, I appreciated reading this book and getting a better picture of who Katie is as a person (not just a senator). While at times the flow of the book was a bit off, the overall message of “doing hard things” was encouraging and uplifting.

Although it’s sometimes easy to trash on politicians, it’s important to not lose sight of their humanity. Just like us, they are people too. Thus, it was refreshing to hear directly from Katie as opposed to receiving bits and pieces of her through the news.

Truthfully, will I ever read this book again? Probably not. But I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about the story behind the senator.

Y'all know I love inspirational memoirs with a heavy emphasis on morals and lessons learned, and I appreciated most of this book but even I felt that it was over-the-top in places. Is the need truly so great that it warrants writing down in a book "don't show up to work with bad breath," in among the business/work ethic section, or "make all the kids try to go potty before a drive" on the parenting section? Not everything needs to be a life lesson. Also, no offense to the gentleman at all, because he seems like a very nice person, but I had no interest in the football lessons from Britt's husband recounted second-hand. It was a really weird narrative choice to include them in the first place and it didn't benefit the book to jump out of first-person reflection to add them.

As much as I can appreciate the overall message of the book, it seems a bit naive for current times. I too remember when these “lessons” were the golden rule for success in this country, but sadly, our nation appears to be going in a direction that contradicts many of these lessons. I highly recommend the book for teens and young adults, and who knows, it may start a movement to bring back the great society, but what I currently see around me discourages that notion.

Katie Britt is a newly-elected US Senator representing the state of Alabama, alongside former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville. Prior to her run for office, Senator Britt served as Senator Richard Shelby‘s Chief of Staff, so she was very familiar with the responsibilities of the office. Although she has a warm and approachable manner, Senator Britt is a smart cheerleader with a deep faith and a servant’s heart. She is a striking contrast to another southerner, Congressman Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and another young female, Congressman Lauren Boebert.

Her book is part memoir, part motivational, with Bible verses sprinkled throughout. She describes growing up in small-town Enterprise, Alabama, home of the Boll Weevil Monument. She explains how the boll weevil decimated the cotton crop and enterprising farmers started growing peanuts instead, which is an example of triumphing over hardship. She also describes how her home and all of their belongings were destroyed in the April, 2011 tornadoes, but her family was so grateful to make it through the storm alive.

Senator Britt describes challenges that she has overcome, how these challenges relate to what young people face today, and advice that her mother gave her. Her mom was the “buck up, buttercup” parent, following with a Bible verse about “turning the other cheek.” The Senator was a very focused and goal-oriented girl growing up and had to learn how to deal with disappointment when she didn’t make the squad or wasn’t elected. She turned her determination around and found new places to serve and new goals to achieve. She admits that her journey may not seem to make sense, but her experiences along the way prepared her for her role in the Senate.

Senator Britt is very complimentary of her family, especially her husband, Wesley Britt. It’s refreshing to read about a happily married couple who have a strong faith. She explains that she was compelled to enter the Senate race because she wanted to make the country better for her children and future generations of Americans. She urges everyone to serve where they can to make our communities better.

God Calls Us to Do Hard Things is a good book to own so it can be re-read when you need a little motivation or are facing challenges. Each of the 15 chapters is on a different topic, so you can read whichever one fits your circumstances. The author’s writing is clear and understandable for all ages and is full of wisdom. Surprisingly she doesn’t use Southern phrasing, so readers from all over can understand and enjoy it.

I received an Advance Review Copy (ARC) from NetGalley and Twelve Books for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Katie Britt is my new Senator from Alabama. I will be honest I did not know a lot about her other than she is married to Wesley Britt, a former Alabama football player. I wanted to learn more about her and what led her to run for office. She grew up in south Alabama and worked hard in school. She then attended the University of Alabama. She eventually met Wesley, After they both graduated and Wesley was playing in the NFL they dated and eventually married. They came back home to go. back to school for advanced degrees when the terrible tornados of 2011 came through Tuscaloosa and destroyed their house but their family survived. She finished a law degree and eventually worked for Senator Shelby. Flash forward and Senator Shelby retires and he endorsed Katie for his old job. Katie discussed with her family the decision to run. That is when her child told her God calls us to do hard things. Being in Congress she will learn about hard things.

Katie did not miss with this one!!! I think it definitely helped that I already admired her so much reading the early parts in her book that described her early life and background. Then, the second half of the book is full of solid, practical advice for someone exactly where I’m at. God Calls Us to do Hard Things was perfect for me as a second semester senior in college, and Katie’s examples were a perfect fit for what I want to do next. Read this if you’re planning on working ever, because the Senator outlines exactly how to do it, and do it right. Fast easy read, (not in your face conservative either) from someone who’s paved the way for young women in Alabama.

I enjoyed reading this memoir with stories and anecdotes from Katie Britt's life.

There was a chapter about how to work well. It lacked personal anecdotes to illuminate her points, so I felt like it was a rambling career lecture. The chapter on parenting felt a bit too long, but she did a better job drawing from her own experiences to illuminate her points.

She's a heartfelt person grounded in strong values, and I can see how that's impacted her for good throughout her life all the way to her election to the US Senate.

A nice, heartwarming read from the youngest-ever elected Republican female senator. I got a copy of her book at a summit she and I both spoke at in Washington, DC. I also had a chance to exchange a few words with her and found her to be pleasant and nice. This is an easy read and will offer the reader some inspiration to handle difficult things.

What a great read about the life of Katie Britt. She endured being bullied at school, survived a tornado, and continues to keep chasing her dreams. She is very proud of her hometown and her husband’s hometown as well. She is really working hard to change laws in Alabama and she has a passion for children.

Katie Britt has a can-do attitude, and the book is full of encouragement. She’s the kind of godly woman I would want as a friend. I would love to vote for her, but I live in Texas. I enjoyed the book and plan to pass it on to others.
