Irina Korschunow was a German author of both children's book and adult literature. The daughter of a Russian father and a German mother, she became an outsider under the National Socialist regime. After World War II, she studied German, English and Theatre in Göttingen and Munich.

She won a number of awards both for her children's and young adult books as well as for the work aimed at an adult audience, which became less and less autobiographical over the course of her career.

You wouldn't think it to look at this little children's book but very strong emotion hurls a wave at you from the very first page. An infant fox is frightened and crying due to waiting for a vital and beloved mother, who can't return because a hunter took her life. The first page is a tear-jerker from two sides: it makes you wonder how many car accidents and hunting expeditions have left frightened newborns alone or in peril to survive. And your heart is grabbed at the thought of any newborn crying. Original German author Irina Korschunow shows this so well, that "The Foundling Fox" could easily be a human child.

Fortunately emotionality rises to a brighter place when another female fox, called a 'vixen' hears the baby. She has three 'kits' at her home to whom she needs to return but as a mother, she is compelled to at least check on the other mother's infant. She realizes he is distraught enough to need comforting immediately and that he is also hungry. She sits to soothe and feed him but can't leave him or her babies any longer, so she carries him with her. Numerous beautiful moments shine from this skinny little story that I didn't expect to affect me so much.

Even though her den is close, she flees another hunter's dog on the journey and also defends the other mother's baby from a badger. By the time she greets her infants, she has protected and cared for the fourth so much, that she loves him like her own and the four kits easily accept each other. This short, elegantly-illustrated tale is essential reading material on the subject of animal compassion and for children of adoption. The ending catches in your throat too but in a jubilant way.

This was a re-read, first time read when I was in primary school. The last days I‘ve been reading this lovely book with my little brother - who is a primary- school pupil - and he enjoyed it as much as I did when I was his age.

I can tell why my primary school teacher, who had an adopted child, liked this story. It has a great message about family and adoption.

3.3/5.0

First real book I can remember reading. I was so proud that day, I finished it in about one or two hours (I must have been about seven years old). I will never forget this book. It made me cry too.

A great short story that introduces how animals may be threatened and saved by a single act of kindness. What parallels can we draw between this story and how we want to be in the world. It's a great book club book - it is short, but has a lot to talk about and several angles for readers to connect with.

Practicing my German with this charming little book with wonderful illustrations. A foundling fox is found by a vixen who already has three kits. The brave mother cares for the little one and brings him home to her other three--the foundling becomes one of her own. Very sweet.
