Ken Bebelle has been an avid reader of fantasy, science fiction, and comic books his entire life. His first foray into writing was in the eighth grade with a sword and sorcery fantasy story stored on a 5.25” floppy disk.
Ken and his co-author, Julia Vee, recently finished Ebony Gate, an Asian-inspired contemporary fantasy set in the Pacific Rim. Ebony Gate was acquired by Claire Eddy at TOR and will debut in summer 2023 as the first in a trilogy. Ken and Julia have also self-published another series, Seattle Slayers, an urban fantasy set in a post-apocalyptic Seattle. In his spare time, Ken is married, has two grown children, ponders the cyberpunk novel that he has yet to write, and tries to grow tomatoes in his meager backyard.
In book three, we find Roxy trying to get herself back together after the major (to me) shock at the end of book two.
Kotori comes around to make sure Roxy isn’t shirking her duty to Finn, as something hasn’t been right with him since the end of book two. Knowing she can’t leave him on what seems to be a path of self destruction, she sets out with Kotori to see how they can fix things.
Throw in a tournament in the Pit, a psychotic vampire and his army of suped up Renfields, a dark Prince, and Kotori’s knowledge of her father’s past, and Roxy has herself an adventure.
Once again I’m left with so many questions - what really caused Samuel to leave the Slayers? What does Eloise forcefully try to get Tyee to share with Roxy? What is Roxy truly capable of? And where did O’Malley really get all his supplies/experiments?
What I love most in this book is the development of Roxy’s character. She really delves into what motivates her and where her heart lies - in Seattle or in Boston. She has to discern when friends become family and what is worth fighting for or leaving behind. We also see some growth of the side characters and I can’t wait to see even more of them!
I love the budding friendship/camaraderie between Kotori and Roxy, as well as Roxy learning how important she has become to Mrs. Chu and the shifter crew. I’m a little wary of Tanner and the Tarim, but we’ll see what happens next!
The major curveball at the end of this story makes me even more eager to dive into book four!
I was excited to get this third book in the series as it, in a way, reminds me a little bit of the Ilona Andrews’ series with Kate Daniels. This third book in the series is an excellent addition. Roxy is torn with what to do with her life after the end of book two. In this book she does explore what her heart most desires. Add in Finn up to something not very good for him, her deepening relationship with her friends including a certain hunky vampire, and learning more about the past, I was engrossed until the end…where there was a shocking twist that is sure to play out in the next addition to the series. I can’t wait to see how this is going to change Roxy’s world. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Ok this is my favorite installment yet and I am anxiously counting down the days until Book 4 is out! This book delivers more of the same we’ve come to expect from the series: page-turning action, great characters, and a deepening/widening mystery. It ties it all off with an incredible ending and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Now that Roxy is no longer a Slayer, she's adrift. It takes a surprise visit to get Roxy thinks about what she really wants and get her back "in the game." The plot continues to be interesting and moves along well.
So much happens in this book! That’s about all I’m going to say…other than I am loving this series. The world they live in can be so brutal. But with friends in the Slayers, friends in the Temple, interest from Tyee, the Blood Prince, it can also be a great place to be. Keep reading and we’ll find out just how strong the breaker magic is in Roxie.
This terrific sequel was a continuation of this fascinating series! I loved the action& adventure and the uniqueness of the story. The characters continue to keep me enthralled as I watch their lives unfold in this fascinating fantasy universe!
More action than most coming of age stories with more dilemmas of conscience. Roxy has to decide to stay or return to Boston to spend time with her siblings and dying mother. Add the need to help her friends and save the life of a werewolf cub.
