James Burton was her brother's best friend until one day that friendship was tainted by something that neither of them wanted to admit.

The problem: Mariella Alvarez had a crush on James. A really big one.
They fell hard and fast until one fateful event tied them to each other, giving them more than that they were bargaining for. As fast as they fell, when they crashed, it burned.

Told between the past and the present, it follows Mariella and James as one weekend makes them realize that their hearts might still beat for each other.

4.5 ⭐️ First of all, I’m so so proud of you and I can’t wait to read more of your upcoming work! James and Mariella have my heart and I hope to meet them again sometime. I loved the story, the second-chance romance aspects as well as the heartbreaking, realistic things that Mariella and James had to face in their relationship. It is so well written! I just recommend to grab some tissues because I cried at least twice (it’s very emotional guys). The reason why it isn’t a five star review is just because I didn’t want this to end. It’s a short romance novella but I think I need more. That’s why I’m hoping for James and Mariella to return at some point 🧡 Overall, an amazing book & I can only recommend it if you’re looking for a good cry (and some really good spice).
I love you & your work and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next ❤️

Reviewer’s Note: The author is one of my best friends so I’m going to be really biased with this review. MY BESTIE WROTE A BOOK AND I’M SUPER PROUD OF HER!

I absolutely devoured this book! I immediately feel in love with the characters and it was amazing to finally meet them after getting snippets of the book over the last few months. It was an easy read and had a nice flow to it. I loved all the nerdy and pop culture references. I loved how we got to see how Mari and James fell in love both as teenagers and adults. Seeing the ups and downs they went through in flashbacks was nice, I did shed a few tears. I loved that it was dual POV and we got to see how both of them were feeling. Do I wish it had been a tad longer so I could have spent more time with them yes but I still loved it and got pulled in right away.

I have definitely found a new book boyfriend! Can’t wait to have a physical copy in my hands so I can make notes in it.

This is a short, angsty read. James and Mariellas story is filled with grief so please check triggers.
At times I found it difficult to get lost in the story but the last 20% was when it really came together.
As its a novella I feel like I lost some of the burn between the characters when they first get together but there is no denying how madly, crazily these two love each other. Even when they're apart it's evident.

1 🌶 (for me anyway, spice is so subjective)

let me start to thank cecillia for sending me her book, obrigado 🫶🏻 és uma querida adorei falar contigo sobre o livro e mal posso esperar para ler o resto da saga!!!
i loved this book a lot, i love a second chance romance, this was a beautiful story and i love the fact that even that everything that happens they still love each other, they are literally soulmates they came back to each other!! also having the one bed trope here was amazing!! it was really emotive reading their relationship fall apart and then maverick 🥹 but i love the little family that they created!!
mariella is the strongest, she’s been through a lot and always made it!! i appreciate her a lot, she’s so kind and is always the sweetest person to her twins since the beginning!!
and james omg i love him, he’s the cutest always being there for her and taking care of her, i want a man like that!! he’s been through a lot too and i loved reading his pov, knowing that he always loved her!!
the ending omg?? i just need more of them!!
in general i love them i love it and loved the side characters, can’t wait for more of them!!

go read it now!! it is really a fast read

This is such a cute quick read.

I enjoyed it all the way through, it explores second chance romance, brothers best friend, forced proximity, dual pov, reclaimed love as well as subjects such as loss and grief.

I really enjoyed getting to know both of these characters. The love they share is unmatched!

What would have made this a 5 star review would have been if the story could have been a little longer so we could really dig into their past more but I also really want to know what happens in the future, hopefully we will hear more about James and Mariella in future stories

Mariella Alvarez can’t keep her eyes off James Burton, her brother’s formal best friend, but one day the fire between can’t be tamed and they’re too lost into the flames. Until tragedy knocked on the door.
It’s the start of this short novella that tells us their love story in both past and present, loss, grief, second chance romance and forced proximity to find their love for each other again after a past that keeps haunting them.

This was such a short and sweet story! I really enjoyed the dual POV for this so we could get an insight from both of them, their feelings and thoughts. But it was also very emotional and I really felt that both Mariella and James’ emotions came through the whole book for me. The story about Maverick…leave it to your tissues so soak up your tears 🤍

The story of Mariella and James is something special and I felt a lot of emotions while reading it.

They are cute and they are definitely meant to be with each other, but their relationship is clouded by happenings of their past. I laughed with them, I smiled with them and I cried with them.
And the spicy scenes?! Hell yes!

I wish we get more of them, because I am not over reading them. I wanna know their future, wanna know how things turn out for them. But I am hopeful. And Excited.

Also we should appreciate that the author is not a native speaker and its phenomenal what an amazing book she wrote. All the respect for you!

For this being Cecillia's debut novel she did a wonderful job! If you love instant gratification, short but hot romance novels. This is definitely for you. Within the first chapter, she leaves you curious about James and Mariella. I do wish it was longer, but mostly because I'm selfish and want more of them. I'm excited to see where she takes this world!

Okay, I'm going to straight up say that this is only semi-bias, due to two reasons, one, I'm friends with the author, and two, my name is mentioned at the end of the book. But, this review will be a combination of both biased and unbiased opinions. And I rate books based on how I feel, and immediately after I finished reading, I did say that this was 4 stars. So you can use either rating or look on Goodreads for other ratings. There are others that did not give a biased review.

The main characters are Mariella and James, and I did enjoy reading them both in the past and present tense. Due to how the book goes back and forth with the timeline. However, I will say that because it was a short book, I felt some possible depth of the character was missing. But, again it is a book with about 140 pages, and there are only many things that you can have. And since it is a short book, the romance in the past and the second-chance romance in the present are fast-paced and you might feel a disconnect in the characters, but for me, I didn't feel a disconnect. I just wished that there were a few more chapters because the book has the potential to be better. Hopefully, we shall see more of Mariella and James in the sequels.

Now, my favorite part of the book was when reading the tragedy of Maverick James. I have seen what child loss does to a family, and the way it was addressed in the book was written in a way that I loved and I felt for both Mariella and James. In my decision, the actions that both Mariella and James took were necessary and it felt like it would happen in real life. In the words that I read, I felt the emotions of the characters and I did feel like it was a real couple while reading it. I did cry at any mention of Maverick.

I'm super excited to read any new projects that Cecillia will have. Te amo rainha <3.

James and Mariella were perfect for each other. They may have lost their ways for a while, but they were soulmates.

The angst was so painful, but it was worth it to reach their happiness. I really didn’t like James’s new girlfriend, but I always believe that he was meant to be with Mariella anyway!

The spice, there may have not been much, but it was hawt!

This was such a sweet and quick read! I would love to read more of their story!
