Wolf Moon

Rate this book
When a Viking boy and his sister are hunted by the ferine, arctic wolves cursed to the Dreadlands, they must reach the city by the sea within one moon cycle; before a sorceress captures them, seals a spell with their blood, and returns the realm to Darkness. Leif Erikson abandoned the settlement in Labrador, Canada, many years ago when the ferine attacked and murdered his small crew. A band of families stayed behind to build, learning to find balance with those who hunted them. Arud is a third generation Norse on this strange soil, and with a grandmother who is unnatural, an anxious mother, and a missing father, his family tree is rooted in secrets. The harvest moon approaches, a single night when the ferine’s binds to the Dreadlands are broken, freeing them to hunt. But when one appears beneath Arud’s window, his mother rushes him off, urging him to take care of his sister whose sickness grows worse. After meeting a beautiful girl with questionable motives, Arud discovers a prophecy in which the blood of a human and ferine hybrid would shift all power to the Sorceress Edda and her wild pack of hunters. But when Arud learns his sister is the hybrid in this prophecy, his world is shaken as family deceptions unravel. Now the stakes are raised, and getting safely to the city in the sea becomes more than a quest. It becomes survival

Never would I think I would want to be engulfed into a snow-filled, dare-devilish adventure drenched in Norse Mythology. It's a subject I quickly learned I knew very little about. Thanks to Engle's picturesque descriptions, I felt like I was experiencing it first hand! I highly recommend this book for readers interested in high-paced adventure and chilling family secrets.

I liked this story! It was fast-paced with great characters. I wasn’t fond of Arud initially, but after going through some character development, and I ended up liking him. I loved how Norse mythology and Viking traditions were woven into the story, and I would recommend this to anyone interested in mythology-based books!

I loved the use of Viking lore in this book. I'm generally not a huge fan of werewolf/vampire stories but I really enjoyed the way the lore and werewolf elements were connected, and I definitely enjoyed this book.

The characters felt very real and almost from the very first page, the story sprinted forward. I kept turning pages and reading on-- I had to know what would happen next. There were definitely some twists that I did not see coming, and I love when an author does that! It added a lot more to the story, especially when I thought back through what had happened and had to reframe everything with the new information that had been revealed.

If you like suspenseful or paranormal stories about werewolves, this is definitely a book to add to your list. Fans of Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater or the Ragnarok Prophecies by A K Morgan should definitely check this book out.

In the lands that Leif Erickson explored and the god Odin blesses there lives a blend of man and ferine, and the half-blood in outcast. Far from the city, in the Outlands, Arud has grown up all his life, wondering why they live in the Outlands instead of the city, but never questioning his parents. Things are changing and the ferine are growing bolder, and so his mother, Vinter decides that it is time that he take his little sister Lykke to the city. It's hard journey and will take them close to three weeks, but his mother is determined that they have to leave and quickly. Arud and Lykke trust in their mother, but this journey will change everything they have ever believed in before now. Dreadlands : Wolf Moon is the story of self-discovery and enlightenment in the journey of Arud. Author Jaimie Engle takes a paranormal/supernatural story and weaves coming of age and self discovery into a wonderful tale that you want to continue reading.

Dreadlands: Wolf Moon is reminiscent of a classic werewolf story in that you have the ferine, but they are much more animalistic. The ferine are an animal that comes out on the full moon, and they are hunters. Don't let that analogy fool you though, this is in no way a werewolf tell, that is just the best way to describe the ferine to someone who hasn't read them yet. Author Jaimie Engle puts her own spin on that animal-shifter idea, places the story in the cold northwest, bring in tells of Vikings and Norse and the god Odin. It is so unique and well written that you read the whole book before you realize what you have done. The battle scenes are not graphic and there is no sex or bad language so I recommend this to readers of all ages.

Another remarkable story inspired by Norse mythology. Welcome to the Realms of Vithalia. We have many interesting characters in Arud, Lykke, Scalvia, Vang, among others. The way the author Jaimie Engle wrote the story is easy to read and understand. I really liked the prose. It was simple. The themes of love, family, never turning back no matter how bad things get and fighting against fate were some themes in the book. Arud and Lykke’s relationship really appealed to me and was what kept me interested in the story through the book, to be honest. I could say a lot of things about Toov or Ahlgren but I don’t want to give spoilers. I’m interested to know what stories the season of Myrkr’s prophecy has to tell. Dreadlands: Woolf Moon is a story I would like to see as a movie. I think it would be a great hit with the public if it ever came out. I don’t know what else to add without giving spoilers.

Now I have to mention the elephant in the room. This story has some issues that I don’t agree with, which were mentioned in my comments as I was reading. That’s not to say that I didn’t like the book, on the contrary I was thinking of giving it four stars for that, but in the end when I evaluated everything from the story, personalities, places, and themes I realized that my bias for the story and the characters led me to give it five stars. If I had to give you a reason to read this book. It would be one that if you are a reader who likes a story that focus on the characters, and not a story with characters, this book is for you. I can’t wait for the sequel.

I really liked this book! It was a fast paced story with lovable characters and plots twists galore. Arud kind of annoyed me at first but he went through some character development and I ended up liking him by the end of the story. The world-building was also quite good, we find things out with characters and they are explained at the right moment so it doesn't interrupt the flow of the narrative. I loved the way that Norse mythology and viking traditions were woven into the story and I would defiantly recommend this to anyone interested in mythology based books!

*Received Arc in exchange for an honest review*

Hunted by the animalistic, arctic shape-shifting wolves cursed to the Dreadlands, a Viking boy and his sister flee their home in hopes of reaching the city by the sea within one moon cycle. After only a few days into their trek, the siblings are attacked by a rogue ferine that’s been stalking them, sending the two into the raging river to escape its clutches. Unable to swim back to shore, Arud and Lykke go over the falls where they meet a peculiar girl named Scalvia who soon joins them on their journey. The siblings soon learn the dark truth that a sorceress wishes to captures them and send their realm into darkness, making their simple task to reach the city a scramble for survival.

With every chapter, the stakes are raised higher and higher, leaving expectations blown and even more to be craved. Whereas other fantasy authors suffer from using heavy exposition to relay the world they’ve built, Engle expertly paces DREADLANDS with the perfect balance of action, intrigue, and fantasy. Between this and the writing style, the world here feels less like a flight of the imagination and more like an enthrallingly eerie campfire story that seems all too real. Not only is this Viking world fascinating, the pacing makes for an absolute page-turner. Engle gives us a middle grade story about Vikings and shapeshifters unlike anything currently on the market, and fans of Neil Gaiman and Sarah J. Maas will relish in this gripping tale. Jaimie Engle has definitely found a new follower in me! An easy 5-Star read.

"Dreadlands" (2016) by American author Jaime Engle.

4.5 stars!
I loved this book! Great characters and storyline. Plottwists are naturally woven into the story without throwing the reader off. The book has a great pace and the story keeps your interest the whole way through. The story is rich in Norse mythology and viking traditions, which is shown throughout the book in a way that isn't simply information dumping, because every myth and tradition makes sense in the story and ending plot of the book. It is coherent and everything ties together perfectly.

Arud is on a quest to get his sister Lykke to Vithalia City before the next full moon. On their travel which is filled with danger and mystery he learns more about himself and the world he lives in. And most importantly: Why they must reach Vithalia City.
On their way they meet new friends, allies and family secrets are revealed.
When Arud doesn't know who to trust and what the day will bring, neither do you.

The ending baffled me (in a good way!) by ending confrontations and solving mysteries that i expected would be concluded in the sequel. This only held on to my interest even more, because i have no idea what is to come.

Can't wait to read the next book!

"Dreadlands: Wolf Moon is a tale of vikings, werewolves, magic, love and betrayal. Like many great book series we may have to wait until the sequel is published before we get answers to some of the questions book 1 left it's readers with. Nonetheless it was a fascinating, easy read, and very tightly written. Jaimie Engle weaves a fantastic yarn of two siblings, thrust out into the world and forced to survive against not only the elements, but tenacious werewolves who seek their blood.

But Arud and Lykke aren't the only ones trying to eek out an existence in the werewolf strewn Dreadlands. On their journey they encounter several others, not all of which are as they appear and it's a race against the clock to find out who is friend and foe."-Daniel L Welch, Author of Tears of Blood (The Veronian Archives).

What adventure Arud gets into and he has no choice-he has to save his sister Lykke. In saving her and fulfilling the prophesy he will hopefully help save everyone else. Many new people are met and become important to him-nothing like meeting your soul mate and bonding in times of crisis.A magical book where what is seen isn't always real.Suspend belief, read, and get carried away. The bracelet and book mark that came with the book was an awesome plus.

Excellent. A must read for young readers. Its full of prophecies, fantastical creatures, sibling loyalty, young romance, and adventure. It's a fabulous chase for survival. It's for a younger audience but I highly enjoyed it as well. I read in advance to see if it was something my son would enjoy. He definitely will.
