The romantic tale of a gopher and a troublemaker who have misunderstood each other over and over finally reaches its conclusion! Unoki invites Toramaru on a date so he can tell her how he feels. When the mood is just right, he confesses...only to find Toramaru's disapproving mother standing in the way of their relationship? The couple's love remains unchanged, but now what?!
Unoki likes Toramaru. She likes him. Their path is pretty clear, except that they’re a couple of dummies at heart. But so is everybody else in the series, so they’re keeping good company.
Hey, the old final volume challenge - wrap it all up and make it work out for as many people as possible. Normally that would be a little much, and it is, but you just have to know how to write these things.
For starters, bless this mess, there is no backpedaling between the two girls and Yutaka’s unrequited crush on Matsuri. It plays out all the way to the very end and is probably the reason that I like this volume so much.
It doesn’t hurt my yuri-loving heart to see some bait actually land something for a change and this goes to some hilarious places. Matsuri has been the least distinct member of the cast, but her aptitude as a partner is a laugh riot throughout and provides a joyously goofy contrast to the continued difficulties of our leads.
And Yodo, obnoxious bully and worst addition to the entire series, meets her match in the form of Toramaru’s brother and his incredibly taciturn demeanour. I really hate her character, but this pairing in particular should have happened ages ago since it makes her a lot more palatable.
Then we come to our leads and giving Unoki a small helping of spine is the smartest trick this story ever pulled, honestly, because once these two start near-dating they’re way more interesting than they were previously.
When Unoki realizes he doesn’t know a lot about Toramaru, which is an unintentionally ironic dig at the depth of the story in general, he takes what he does know and makes a perfect date out of it. And the visual of Toramaru showing up all dressed up yet still in her gym shorts made me laugh way harder than it should have.
The only downside is the very last complication that shows up in the form of Toramaru’s overbearing mother. There’s not enough pages to sell her showing up, Toramaru’s overreaction, and Unoki stepping up.
I admit it gives way to some rather enjoyable nonsense, including the best princess carry of the volume, and there’s more than one, but it’s such a nothing of a complication that it feels like it’s just there to pad out the page count.
Well, it’s over, but it went out with a big old bang and this might honestly be the best volume of the series, which is something I don’t often say about final volumes. It landed way more jokes, toned down the bully, and delivered on the romance. What more, genuinely, can you ask for?
3.5 stars - well, they could have lost that mom subplot for one thing. Waste of pages aside, I enjoyed the ending to this and, while it will never be an all-timer for me, I don’t regret my time with most of these characters. Cute and funny to the end.
The final volume?! Such a shame as I really enjoyed this series. Everything was neatly wrapped up so it's it's nice solid ending. A fun read to be sure!
The volume in which everyone finally begins sorting their shit out, confessing their obvious feelings, and dealing with everything. I don't know if it's actually good but I find relief in finally seeing these dorks come out and say the stuff they've kept secret since the first volume. It's a pleasing end to the series and while most of the "Banchou" stuff is ignored here, there's been enough work on the characters to give them something to do outside of the school delinquency stuff.
