The Brutal Duet #2

Love in Brutal Devotion

Rate this book
Tia
Love. I’m in love with not just one man but three. Three brutally devoted men determined to make me theirs one way or another.
Jace, the gentle boy I fell in love with, is no more. In his place is Rage, my lovers’ brother. He’s angry, jealous and brutal.
Can he accept me and my relationship, or will his devotion to me tear us apart?
And what happens when he uncovers my truth, and my life is thrown into turmoil?
Lucas holds secrets, and his determination to keep me is risking everything we’ve built.
And Cole? Cole is willing to accept it all just to be with me, even if it means hurting us in the process.
What happens when the one thing that means the most to me becomes at risk?
Can my men stay devoted and love me when I need them the most, or will they destroy us, unable to accept one another?
Our love is brutal, but it’s filled with devotion.
Love In Brutal Devotion is Book 2 in a Why Choose duet.

WARNING: This book has triggers. It contains sensitive and explicit storylines, graphic sex scenes and strong language recommended for readers aged eighteen and over.

Jace Matthews broke her heart, but it was Cole Maguire who fixed it.

I love how Lucas became the glue that holds them together. Even with all that He has been through……

I just love what Cole does to her. How he grounds the raging storm inside within her

What I hate is how Jace Gave me whiplash one second, he was all hunky dory with her the next he was calling her whore and slut or anything else that he could think of cause he didn’t get his way

I’m a bit torn here. I’ve heard that Ms Alpha does smut well……. At times I felt like it was bit over kill…….. Not enough dialog between the characters …… then the last few chapters felt a bit rushed……….

I really wanted to love this book as I really enjoyed some parts of the book that were Very good…. And there was a good foundation to an underlying
Storyline……….. each and every one of the characters had some dark elements that needs to be told the only problem was there was way way way too much smut…… Someone felt upset let’s have sex….. someone was off, let’s have sex, and you get the Overall picture……… It just kind of felt like there were a bunch of teenagers…… now throw in the mix that you had a young daughter in the mist and she made a comment of How when she grew up, she wanted to have three boyfriends of her own at the same time like mommy ……. mind you this was a 4-year-old daughter …… this where The scale was tipped in the wrong direction for me

Anyone who knows me knows that I rarely rarely rate a book this low but due to the fact that I had trouble with the statement that Harper made

Will I give this author an second chance , Most definitely………. This author has amazing writing skills she just put too much more pain with this particular Duet

It has been said that love and hate are two sides of the same coin. As we pick up Love in Brutal Devotion at the surprise reuniting of Rage and Tia, you can feel both those emotions pouring out of them. Knowing all that's happened in their years apart and the pain it's caused is heartbreaking. Watching Jace come to grips with, not only all that transpired in the past, but that Tia is in love with his brothers is equally hard. However, the immense love among the brothers and their girl is rewarding.

I loved that Tia had a connection with each brother separately, but that they work well as a unit too. However, I was hoping to see further exploration and development of the budding sexual relationship between Cole and Lucas. That said, with all the Easter eggs sprinkled throughout, I'm hoping that we'll see more of these four in the future.

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.5)
Trope: RH
Angst: 😱😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Such a fantastic conclusion to that cliffhanger in book one that left me on the edge of my seat! It's starts right off with the surprise reunion of Rage and Tia and just doesn't let up. Tons of super hot smexy, but super emotional with rediscovering of old feelings and navigating new ones. All of these characters have a heartbreaking story to tell and a fantastic twist will leave you with a smile on your face. I really liked how Tia was able to communicate her needs and was unwilling to compromise on the things she felt were important when it would have been really easy just to bend to Rage's desires. It's my understanding this was a just a duet, but it was written like we may see more of these four in the future and I'm definitely here for it!

Another “all smut and no plot” book ✨

I’m a bit torn here. Alpha does smut well. I’ve come to really like her writing style, it’s feels intentional and straight to the point, BUT I found myself missing actual plot with this second book. I know she calls it out in her disclaimer, but I wanted more, I needed more information. I have so many unanswered questions.

Will Thalia/Tia ever meet Sky?
What’s going to happen to the Lancasters?
How does Bren know the Lancasters?
Will Bren become an issue later?
What’s the deal with Lucas and the file cabinet?
What else is Lucas hiding?
What’s going to happen between Lucas and Cole?

It all just feels unresolved to me. The story feels unfinished.

I really wanted to love this book as I really enjoyed the first one. But I just didn’t. I’m sorry but I really really disliked Jace!! He was too petulant. Too self absorbed. I just wanted to punch him in the face!!

Also for how much happened in this book, it was too short. And now I’m after that ending it’s clear there will be more??!!!

Urgh this has really frustrated me!

I have to be true and honest to myself, and give both books in this duet 1⭐️.
This was not only NOT good, but was in fact actually genuinely bad.

First, let me address that the overarching plot of the book falls a bit flat. There’s not *really* much of a plot at all other than a bunch of smut, and our FMC wanting her daughter back.

Next, I’d like to mention that there’s some extreme trauma that some of our characters have been through. I don’t think these topics are handled well. They’re really sort of used as plot devices, and we don’t get to see any genuine working through or overcoming trauma.

Finally, the most glaring issue in this book is the writing itself. Holy shit, it’s so bad. I have to be honest here.
The writing like a middle schooler wrote a book. If even that.

We have grammatical errors. We have some of the worst and most unnatural dialogue I’ve seen in a book. We’re lacking descriptions of basically everything, which means this book goes from one scene to the next without any tact and gives you weird whiplash. Characters seem to be screaming constantly with so many sentences ending in exclamation points.

I would actually equate the writing of this book similar to my review; every sentence is short, and there is no depth to the writing. Again, no real descriptions. Not of the surroundings, not of our characters inner monologues and thoughts. It all just falls flat.

And there’s TWO books like that.

Finally, the shit Cherry on top of the shit sundae is the ending. This duet really seems to end on a cliffhanger, which is absolutely illogical considering it’s a duet, and it’s now over. It makes no sense and is frustrating for any reader, especially if you’re someone who actually enjoyed these books.

God, I wish I could burn these books from my memory.

Ok…so it pains me to write this a bit. Let me preface by saying I wish BJ Alpha all the best of luck and I’m glad the audiobook was a success. I finished it because I was genuinely curious as to how it would play out even though it kinda wasn’t my jam. And because I finished it, I want to give my honest review.

I think the book had potential, but it seemed like the smut was the main focus and the plot was written around the smut. It also felt misplaced to me. And while I love me an erotica novel, this just missed the mark for me.

The things I did like were:
1. The narration. It was on point. Stella Hunter, Troy Duran, Aiden Snow, and Gideon Frost did an amazing job.
2. The way the smut was written. I did actually like it.
3. The Jacob’s Ladder.

The things I think were the biggest flaws:
1. They were all sex crazed. Even in inappropriate situations.
2. They messed with her birth control (which I’m totally cool with in a book), but they never told her. She never found out. It was like that tidbit was just thrown in to make them morally gray.
3. The CONSTANT title drop. Kid you not, within a 10 minute timespan, they said the base word of brutal or devotion was said at least 7 times. (I listened on 1.7x speed)
4. It ended on a cliffhanger for a completed duet. And it wasn’t for a spin off type cliffhanger. It’s literally going to be a continuation of the story.
5. I just found the plot point to be a little weak.
6. Lucas had trauma but we never got into specifics so he remained an enigma until the end.
7. There was MM build up that was never fully explored so it seemed unresolved to me.
8. We never found out what happened between young Tia and Jace and why they separated.
9. This one is the biggest reason. I was very triggered as a blood banker. The little girl in the book was blood typed AB negative, which is rare. 1% of US population. However, the author didn’t research that because AB is a universal recipient. So the little girl could have received any type of rh negative blood and been fine. But no, they were asking for directed donations from biological parents because her blood type was rare. Which also is not an immediate process due to the blood having to be processed and tested for diseases and infections. So more research should have been put into this aspect because a simple google search would have told you that AB can receive blood from any blood type.

Give me a rope, so I can drop myself 🙃

The “incest” was incest in this book 🤮 could not even find a warning in the trigger warning

The plot wasn’t plotting. As if she throw snow and the wall and hopping it would stick. And she throw a lot of stuff, even daring to give it an open ending… I have burned enough so I’m not going to read any more of this barf of words on pages.

- Edward Cullen much (watching her sleep)
- Adonis, are you freaking for real. I DON’T AGREE, more like a useless Priapus/Hephaestus.
- Switch her birth control HOW FUCKING TOXIC I will send Lana 💪 Also what do you think with her trauma!!! Really her trauma is really poorly handled, more to create a bad guy in the story than to actually keep in mind what she has been through.

In book one she wrote “pre c0m3” a lot and in this book she could not get enough of the word “daddy”. I honestly think that making a drinking game with only those two words while make you hammered.

The voice actors were good despite what they got to read up.
If other people like it that’s fine, everybody’s taste is different. This book just (really) wasn’t mine taste 💕

Folks, the smut was too good.

Yes, the book had some weird moments, the characters say some weird lines sometimes, and this fmc is not the best, but i am choosing to ignore all of it, because the smut made up for all of it.

Turn your mind off for this one.

It's that type of book, and i am gonna need this author to write more like this.

Chop chop, BJ Alpha, give me more, thanks.

Seriously, and i looove their little family. So wholesome!

But i gotta say, I feel so bad for my gurl.

These dudes keep using blood and spit as lubes while doing anal sex with her, and i just... my own ass hurts for her.

I hope my gurl is okay.

Cause blood and spit are not lube, i fear...

I completely binged the first and second book in a day and half to say I was tired after is an understatement. But I couldn't put them down. I'm excited to see where the series goes from here and what secrets are hiding in the shadows. I really like Tia. I'm sure there is alot more to come from her and her men

Bring on book 3

If Rage just could stop, sit, and think for a second, this would have been 4 stars. And just like my review for the first book, a little wattpady and the title drop was way too cringy for me. But, the cute parts really saved this book

Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5/5
MFC: Tia was sweet, of course. Wish she would’ve put Jace in his place though.
MMC(s): Lucas and Cole were supportive, but Cole felt like a wallpaper character. I hated Jace. 🫣
Plot: I previously gave this a 4/5, but now I’m not sure… what the plot was?
Book cover: 4/5.
Would I buy a physical copy?: *sigh* probably not.

Okay, I was PUMPED for this. I gave book one five stars and it was my favorite January read but… why was this a duet? Definitely could have been put in the first book since it was so short.

The writing was good, didn’t really catch any mistakes but the POV’s were so short and choppy that it kept breaking up any flow you’d get. Kinda felt like this was originally suppose to be a standalone.

Tia remained the same from book one. Kind and considerate of the guys, even when I really wished she would’ve put Jace in his place. She didn’t deserve his actions or words.

Jace. I really thought I was going to like him, he gave off the GOOD dominant vibes in book one. Book two? Asshole. Straight up asshole. I couldn’t stand him! He was SO rude, judgmental not only towards Tia but to Lucas and Cole as well for their nonrelationship, abusive (he slammed her against walls a couple times, while angry, so it wasn’t the good sexual slamming of walls kinda thing), quick to think the worse of her, and possessive in the wrong way. After they had their heart to heart (which was nice-sh) and he found out about Harper, he automatically went to thinking she was unfaithful! That was the last straw. I love a bad temper man but he was acting like a child, not cute.

What happened to Cole? He was floating around the pages but never really had a purpose unless he was getting Tia off or holding her while she cried because his best friend was being a douche. The strong connection that was built in book one definitely did not make it to book two.

Lucas sounded like a different person. Almost all of his previous ticks were gone, people could touch him, he spoke outwardly more, etc. I’m all for character growth, especially those with stunted emotions, but I sorta missed the shy voyeur. The book was so short that nothing else really developed between him and Cole, just a VERY tiny moment. Meh.

The whole Harper situation was wrapped up quickly, seems like there’s another book that’ll explain her foster parents weird stalking issue. Martin’s ending was sort of satisfying. Overall, I’m still pretty bummed.

The amount of time 'in brutal devotion' or 'love in brutal devotion' was said in this book, was REALLY ridiculous.
We get it. You're trying to be "cool" and sneak the book title in, but doing it 50 million times it just dumb. 2x was cheesy 3x cringy any more is just pathetic.

This one wasn't as cheesy as the first, but the shit with Jace had me mad. I don't really care for dub-con, but it's not a trigger or anything. Its just the way he treated her and she just allowed it because she 'loves' him.

It ended but I felt like the story was not finished. When you read a duet, you expect all the issues to be resolved by the end of book 2, but for some reason this didn't have everything resolved meaning there will be more so technically not a duet. Unless the series is part of a bigger universe? They could all be interconnected.

The foster father - Martin- I think, said before he died that he would tell them about the others. We never got an explanation about that. What others? Others for what? Was there more that had abused her or is this just a ring of foster people grooming / abusing kids??? Plus the foster parents for Harper still hasn't been resolved - but it looks like that is being tied in to her sister's story?
Idk. Just left me feeling like it was unresolved. Yeah she got her kid and the guys but that wasn't the whole thing.

ALSO - her kid is 4 and is talking like she is 7. Her 4 year old knows that she has 3 boyfriends, understands that, and is okay with it? I'm sorry but no 4 year would grab that concept. When they tell her Jace is her father - she says 'ok but so is Cole and Lucas' like .... WHAT? She met them like TWICE. Yeah I didn't believe that was an actual kid and all the conversations with her definitely weren't realistic, especially for a kid that is in a foster situation. I know, I know, its supposed to be a fantasy.. but this is not a fantasy land, this was written as real humans in the real world, so you would expect the situations to be realistic and relatable (somewhat) or at least at the minimum - believable.

For me, its hard for me to read something if I don't feel like its something that could actually happen. Like I go into a fantasy book about dragons and fae knowing this is all made up but when I read contemp. Adult. Romance - you expect to feel like the stuff happening in the book is actually really happening for these characters.
Idk that's just me though.

You know, things were going okay with book one. It was mostly spice, which is totally fine. I don't mind books like that. Sometimes, I want mostly plot and sometimes I don't.

I do think authors must have a competition going on who can write the most inappropriately timed sex scene. We have two in this book, and honestly, they ruined the whole vibe for me. Can we just normalize not having horribly timed sex scenes in a book?

Tia/Thalia lost custody of her daughter when she was sixteen. She had been in foster care herself and was found after being assaulted by her foster father. She was taken into protective custody, and when she had Harper, they took her. Harper has been with her foster parents for most of her life. Tia tries desperately to get her back while they are trying to adopt Harper out from under her. That's really what the plot of the duet revolves around, despite there being less focus on the plot and more on the sex.

My problem here is that up until Tia gets with the guys, she was reduced to seeing Harper once a month for six hours. Lucas gets a lawyer who helps Tia get more time with Harper. On one of these visit days, Tia and the guys take her to the zoo. Mom is so desperate to have time with her daughter that her visit day is 100% focused on her, right? 😒 No. Tia leaves Harper with the guy who she knows the least while she sneaks off with the other two to have sex in the car because they were feeling left out. Later in the book, they find out that Harper was hit by a car trying to run away from her foster mother. Tia is glued to her bedside, right? Again, no. She sneaks off with the third guy to have sex. I mean, what the fuck.

I'm not buying the whole "mom is desperate to get her daughter back" line, which is all this duet has for a plot. You're telling me that you can't focus on your daughter, a daughter you barely get to see, because you can't abstain from sex for just a few hours? Especially when they are all going at it multiple times every day. It's just all ruined for me, to be honest. I was okay with it until those two scenes.

Lastly, there are unresolved issues by the end of the duet which leaves me confused. Usually, a duet means two. The story should be nicely wrapped up but it's not. Are there more? Do I care? Before the zoo and the hospital scenes, I may have said yes, but I just don't think so.

Be prepared to have your panties melted!

After THAT cliffhanger in book 1, BJ left me needing answers asap. And I got them. This book gave lots of answers and delivered.

Finally the mysterious third brother gets his time to shine. Rage lives up to his name. He is filled with it and as the story progressed I got to know more and ended up falling as hard for him as I had with his brothers. I loved that Tia had a deep connection with each brother individually and that them being all together only made them stronger.

There was a small bit with Lucas and Cole that felt unfinished. But it did not take away from the main storyline.

Also leave it up to BJ Alpha to drop a plottwist bomb no one saw coming. I was simply ecstatic and in shock!

I was unable to put the book down and read it in one sitting. I did take a minute in between some chapters because it was so hot. Love In Brutal Devotion is filled with love, smut and kinks. *chefs kiss*

Love in Brutal Devotion- BJ Alpha
Narrated in Duet by Stella Hunter, Aiden Snow, Troy Duran, and Gideon Frost

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Narration 🎧🎧🎧🎧

Unlike book one, I did not read the ebook for this one last year when it came out, opting to wait for the audiobooks, so I went into this still hanging on the cliffhanger! I loved how fast faced it was and how quickly the answers we all had got answered. I did feel like this one was more smut written around plot as opposed to fitting the smut into the story but I didn’t think it was bad. For a high spice book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. By the end it made me want to go back and read all of BJ Alpha’s mafia series and I’m looking forward to the second duet coming up soon!

As far as the audio goes, these guys are the best! Stella is the queen, she’s seriously my favorite FVA, so you can’t give me anything she narrates and tell me it’s bad because I’m going to love it. And Troy, Aiden, and Gideon’s voices are so damn hot. I said this in my review for part one of the duet and the only tick I would say against the narration would be that the guys voices may sound too similar to some people. I am an avid audio listener so I can distinguish each of their voices but a new audiobook listener may not.

I am going to be extremely frank in this review and I am sorry to the author or to the people who appreciated this book. But personally I didn't like this book at all, there is no storyline, the character development is poorly written, the heroine is stupid and only thinks about sex. And let's not talk about the male characters who have no depth and who are red flags except for Cole (and even he is borderline). Lucas spends his time doing sneaky shots that aren't appreciable, Jace is borderline rapist to me, and Cole is a passive character. Let's not talk about the end of this duology which is sloppy, a lot of points remain unanswered and others have been developed in the epilogue without answer, in particular the Cole / Lucas relationship. Anyway if you want to read a book where the characters just jump on each other every chapter this is a book that is made for you otherwise go your way or you will be disappointed.

After reading Hidden in Brutal Devotion I honestly didn't have high hopes for this second book. The only reason I went on to read this one, is due to the end of the first book. Love in Brutal Devotion had more emotion and story-line and that is why there is 4 stars instead of 3.

Jace brought this book together. If it wasn't for his high emotions, I probably would have DNF'ed this book. Tia was to unemotional for me, even when her daughter gets hurt and she is in the hospital. I understand sex helps with stress, but jeez, sometimes there is just not a place to f*ck.

Again not every book from B.J. is a guarantee read for me. So for me to have read both is a big deal.

4.5 stars cut out of Carolina Reapers! What an ending! Whilst it was great to explore the continuation of the storyline, and yes, there was a story interspersed with the spice, it was the Easter eggs at the end that were absolute chef’s kiss!

BJ Alpha has been able to create a group dynamic that shows how three possessive and controlling men can work together when it comes to the woman they love. Eventually! Maybe ;-)

The book felt like it ended before the story was even over.
- What's the deal with the Lancaster's?
- Will Tia and Sky ever meet?

I liked the daddy kink, but it seemed so out of place. Especially where Lucas's father SA him.

Jace was a douche 90% of the time.

Didn't care for Bren in the bonus epilogue. He was a complete dick.

3rd brother is called Rage because he's full of, guess what? Ding ding ding ding. You guess it: Rage. 3rd brother and woman were eachother fist love. They hate eachother now because a misunderstanding. Do they talk about it like adult? You might ask. Nop they hate f*ck each other for 20 chapters while she dates the 1st and 2nd bother.
The 1st brother, aka cute-but-unhinged, discovers that the 2nd brother aka the " I'll carve my name on your back with a knife with out you permission" has been stalking the girl for like 6 months and he always knwe the girl was 3rd brother's fist love. So he orchestrated everything. So everyone is pissed. Do they talk like adults? You guessed it. They don't
Finally they get their shit together.
So now the 3 brother shared the woman. And 1st and 2nd have the hot for eachother.
they are not related. Thank god!- they get jealous sometimes. So they do the obvious thing. If you guess talk like adults, you are wrong. They smash things, scream, fight and finally tampered with her contraceptive pill. You know, like normal grown men.

Does she need therapy? Maybe. I do to because I enjoyed reading about it. Yeah yeah SHAME SHAME SHAME 😒
