M.A. Rothman

82 books325 followers
USA TODAY bestselling author, M.A. Rothman, is one of the most unlikely novelists you'll ever meet. He's an engineer first and foremost, with a background in the sciences, and somehow or another, this writing habit of his has turned into a bit more than just a run-of-the-mill hobby.

He primarily writes stories that focus on two things: technology and international intrigue. This writing tends to span the genres of science fiction, techno-thriller, and mainstream thrillers.

When not writing, he enjoys cooking, learning about new technology, travel, and spending time with his family.

A fun read. I highly recommend the publisher pack over any other format because, in my opinion, books 1 and 2 really should have been one book. The publisher pack audible is 14 hours - which is a pretty standard length fantasy novel. A seven hour book is akin to the length of a middle school read.

Aside from the format - and I should say, had this been one book with two parts, I highly liked the way Rothman unfolded the story - this book was enjoyable. The first book centered on two characters and seemed every part a normal fantasy. Book two really flipped everything on end, and went back in time to focus on a separate group of characters that were tangentially mentioned, and who we meet, in book one. Book one in many ways almost seemed like a distraction since book two establishes the real main characters of the story.

I'm not sure I'd recommend purchasing an expensive version but would recommend the free publisher pack on audible and perhaps finding copies in local books stores for the remainder of the story. I am interested in how the story ends, but probably not ahead of a host of other novels on my TBR.

If an author writes an author's note, you should read it. Rothman noted that this story originally began as bed-time stories to his sons. Honestly, going through this story I can see how this was originally a bed time story. While Rothman definitely edited and added areas to flesh it out, ultimately this is definitely a young adult novel that isn't going to keep you up thinking about complex concepts. I also liked the author's note as he explained some of the science behind the magic concepts in the book.

All-in-all, this isn't a heavy investment and did enough to keep my interest and make me curious about the ending. Not a game changer but worthy of your time.
