Wonderland Ever After #2

Cheshire in Heartsland

Rate this book
Cheshire is determined to convince King Rei to give them a second chance at happily ever after. But what if the only way to do that is for the cat shifter to team up with his enemy? I could sulk about King Rei choosing his duty to his kingdom over our relationship, but it’s way more fun to get payback by stealing his crowns. Of course, my favorite form of revenge is tempting my fated mate with what he could have if only he wasn’t so stubborn. We’ve been playing our will-they-won’t-they game since he took the throne, but the stakes change when a rival prince arrives in Wonderland to try wooing away my beloved. As a master of mayhem and mischief, I’m prepared to chase off the unwanted interloper by any means necessary. But I quickly discover that the little princeling isn’t what he seems. And what’s more ingenious than working with my enemy to catch Rei by surprise? After all, I said I’d do absolutely anything to win him back. Will my efforts finally motivate Rei to let me claim him as my mate? Cheshire in Heartsland is the second book in the Wonderland Ever After series. This sweet-with-heat MM paranormal fantasy romance features affectionate shifters, fated mates, second chances, and a royal gay romance. Escape into this Wonderland full of whimsy, where everyone gets a HEA without cliffhangers. Each book can be read as a standalone but is best enjoyed in order.

In Alastair in Wonderland I fell in love with the Cheshire Cat, he was perfect in every way. From his cuddly kitty persona to his mischievous man. One thing stood out more than anything; his love and affection for the King of Hearts, Rei.

Poor, giving Rei is trying to counteract the evil effects of his mother and brother by being a monogamous king to his long tortured people. So no matter how much he loves Cheshire he can’t take him as consort due to his infamous history.

Another cute as can be story based on Alice in Wonderland. I always get super excited each time a beloved character is introduced in the fashion our fair author has made them. I love that so many beloved characters have fated mates and everything they go through to get them in their bed and hearts.

Sweet, funny and steamy, I don’t know what else you could possibly need or want.

I’m so excited for the next book and to learn more about the March Hare.

Fairytale Reimagining
Series - read in order (incomplete)
Format: digital - ku

Considering how much I loved Cheshire’s character in the last one… and honestly in this one too, I’m not sure why I didn’t like this book more. The story was cute, and I enjoyed Rei and Chess getting together, but it felt like it simultaneously, went nowhere and rushed through things. I still adored all the nods to the original Alice, and the whimsical fantasy of the storyline, but it didn’t have quite the same pull as the first one for me. I do still want to see what happens with the other characters, but I don’t find myself as excited to read the next book.

Cheshire in Heartsland is the second in the Wonderland Ever After series. I love this series sooo freakin much. Insane characters looking for their fated mates. Cheshire had my heart in book one. He had amazing patience waiting for Rei to acknowledge him, but of course Rei had good reasons. When they finally got together… gah so perfect! This was amazing, fated mates, witty banter, insta-love and a lot of fantastic secondary characters. Overall, a fantastic read! Well written with catchy pacing that flowed and kept me engaged!

Cheshire stole my heart in book 1 and he kept a hold of it in this book. I admired his patience. He waited so long for his mate to finally acknowledge and accept him. Of course Rei had his reason so I don't blame him. Rei is such a good King. He really put his peoples happiness above his own, but I was glad that he saw the truth. That his fears weren't warranted. Chess & Rei's HEA was gratifying.

I love these books so much! Alice in Wonderland is by far one of my favorite classics. The utter imagination (or drug use) that went into the idea behind this world is incredible.

Ariella Zoelle has taken a world full of kooky characters and made them into sexy animal shifters who’re looking for love in their fated mates… and I love it so much! I knew from reading the first book that I needed Chess and Rei’s story. The son of the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat, now that’s a love match I didn’t think I’d ever need. But having it makes me the happiest.

I’ve never known a cat to be patient, but Chess has bided his time waiting for the King to realize they were meant to be together. Enter Prince Renner from a neighboring Kingdom. He’s Rei’s new potential Love match, but he knows, as well as everyone else, that he’s meant to be with another. So watching him team up with Cheshire to make it happen was literally the highlight of my time reading.

This was such an absolute joy to read and I can’t wait to continue the series.

After reading the first book in this series, it was hard to wait to read Cheshire’s story after being teased with his and Rei’s situation. I love his character with his naughty behavior and tendency to poke around while no one can see him. Of all of the characters introduced in the series, Cheshire is by far my favorite…such a wayward cat.

Rei has had the weight of the kingdom on his shoulders since he became the king, and he’s worked tirelessly to make things right after his mother’s and oldest brother’s reigns. Unfortunately, that meant denying himself a relationship with the person he loves…all out of his supposed duty to his people. His angst is self-imposed, and Cheshire, along with Rei’s other friends, are relentless in trying to get Rei to change his thinking.

As for Prince Renner from Mirrorland? The part he plays in all of this is unexpected, but leads to some interesting revelations. You may not expect the feelings his character will evoke. He is also the instigator of one of the funniest scenes in the book—and the most revealing for Rei.

I had high hopes for Cheshire’s story, and I’m happy to say the author delivered. 4.5 stars for Cheshire in Heartsland, and now I again can’t wait for book number three! If you haven’t started this series yet, you’re really missing out on the fun :-)

pure entertainment and delight!

This is a paranormal shifter romance with Alice in Wonderland vibes! This story jumps off from the end of book one where Cheshire Cat is in love with his fated mate but there’s a twist. This was such a fun and entertaining adventure, I hope to find more like this one!The story is well written, with great characters; I’m looking forward to more from this series!

Love this series

This series is just adorable with super low angst relationships. The world itself is based on Alice on wonderland but it is done in a cute way that isn't your typical Alice retelling. I loved Chess and how devoted he is to Rei, his friends and wonderland! I can't wait to read about Renner and March then hopefully Vivi and Hatter!

¡Ariella!

Cheshire in Heartsland is an irresistible blend of mischief, romance, and magical mayhem that takes readers back into the whimsical world of Wonderland. The second book in the Wonderland Ever After series, this story brings plenty of heat, humor, and heart, as Cheshire—the charismatic, mischievous cat shifter—fights to win back his fated mate, King Rei.

Cheshire is determined to make King Rei see that their happily ever after isn’t lost, even though the king has chosen duty over love in the past. Rather than sulking, Cheshire embraces his playful side, planning revenge in the form of stealing crowns and tempting Rei with what he could have, if only he weren’t so stubborn. The chemistry between them is electric, filled with tension and desire, making their will-they-won’t-they dynamic both frustrating and endlessly fun.

However, the stakes take a sharp turn when a rival prince arrives in Wonderland, seemingly trying to woo King Rei away from Cheshire. True to his mischievous nature, Cheshire is ready to chase the interloper away by any means necessary. But as the story unfolds, he realizes the rival prince isn’t what he seems. To make matters more interesting, Cheshire ends up teaming up with his enemy to catch Rei by surprise—proving once again that he’s willing to do anything to win Rei’s heart.

This book is packed with moments of humor, heart, and a lot of heated tension between the characters. The world-building remains as enchanting as ever, and the magical setting of Wonderland serves as the perfect backdrop for this passionate, second-chance romance. The plot is fast-paced, keeping readers on their toes as Cheshire balances playful antics with heartfelt emotions, all while navigating the complexities of royal duty, love, and mischief.

What stands out most in Cheshire in Heartsland is the depth of the relationship between Cheshire and Rei. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the book’s blend of sweet and steamy moments makes for an engaging read. The twist of teaming up with a former enemy adds an exciting layer of intrigue and showcases the characters' growth throughout the book.

If you’re a fan of MM paranormal romance, second-chance love stories, and characters who keep you laughing while stealing your heart, Cheshire in Heartsland is a must-read. With its clever humor, sizzling romance, and a guaranteed HEA (happily ever after), it’s the perfect escape into a world where love conquers all, no matter the obstacles. I’m already looking forward to the next adventure in this captivating series!

My 2024 Reading Challenge for the month of February will be Beat The Backlog work (digital and print books). This includes Ariella Zoelle's "Alistair in Wonderland." It's the first novel in her Wonderland Ever After series. By reading this, I'm crossing off last October reads (paranormal/fantasy) as well as an author off my to-binge list.

GAHH! D: This book!!!! Double D: !!

Cheshire stole the show from the last book, because that's just who he is. I loooove this character. He's kind and sweet and mischievous and stubborn and so layered but so freaking great. And he was the perfect match for Rei, who is all of those things but with the added sense of humbleness and a few crowns. ;)

And Prince Renner? He was adorable as fuck. I can't wait for his book!!

I've been eager to read Rei and Chess's romance since the first book in this series came out, and their story was just as playful and sweet as I'd hoped it'd be. Chess remained the delightful troublemaker he always has been, but seeing his deep love for Rei firsthand made my heart melt into a puddle of goo. I was not expecting him to find an ally in Prince Renner of all people, but watching the two of them team up to push Rei and Chess together was quite entertaining. Though I was firmly on Chess's side about the silliness of Rei's hesitation to be with him, I did sympathize with the extreme pressure he was under as a King. It said a lot about his character that he was willing to deny himself happiness to put the needs of his people first, and I'm really glad he was able to get some assurances that his people weren't afraid of Chess like he'd thought. That spontaneous trip to the tavern was definitely the turning point in the will they/won't they relationship angst, and once Rei realized there was nothing holding him back from being with Chess, their romance took off at lightning speed. I was thrilled to see these two soak up some steamy, passionate bliss together, especially after fifty years of denying themselves, and my god did they make up for lost time! Calling their chemistry fantastic feels like an understatement, and getting to see all the little ways they doted on each other and cared for each other was utterly swoon-worthy. The whole last section of their story felt like a joyous celebration, and I absolutely loved how settled and content the two of them were in their mated bond before I had to say goodbye. I'm seriously loving this author's interpretation of Wonderland, and I can't wait to read the next book!

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

FINALLY, Cheshire and Rei (the King of Hearts)'s story!! I fell in love with that scamp Cheshire in the first book, and my heart just broke for his situation with Rei. And then I fell in love with Prince Renner and his kind sweetness just as fast as Cheshire did, haha. I felt like we really get to know Rei better in this book. There's a scene where he's in disguise (I won't say more than that because no spoilers) and OMG, I laughed so hard haha.

I had suspicions in book one (Alistair in Wonderland) who March's fated mate would end up being and was totally right - but I still can't wait for their book. There's also a twist thrown in with Vivi and Hatter (that I did NOT see coming, but was wondering how she'd keep them apart through another book), and I'm looking forward to how that will resolve!

So there are some definite things I don't like about these books - like the use of the word "prick" to describe the male member, or some of the ways the shifters use their magic (magical lube!). It was enough to knock off a star for me, but really those things are probably more personal preference than anything, so ymmv.

This is the second book in the Wonderland Ever After series. I highly recommend reading them in order. I can't wait for books three and four, Renner in Mirror Land and Hatter in Clockland respectively.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.

This is such a wonderful land that Ariella has created, full of charm, magic and a certain troublesome cat shifter.
Cheshire has not hidden his desire to reunite with King Rei, after the king broke off their relationship when he took the throne after his mother and brother were killed. He focused on making life better for his people, which he's succeeded at but at the sacrifice of his own happiness. Now Cheshire, their friends and the visiting Prince Renner are determined to get the king seeing now is their time.
I love the relationship between these two. It's so hard to deny Cheshire with his open desire and love for Rei. With input from Bianco, Alistair, Hatter, March and Vivi, Rei can't help thinking that the time is coming to finally take his own happiness. The two are such a perfect match and their love and attraction to each other shines through in their thoughts and interactions. Renner is full of hope and excitement about the two coming together, just happy to be along for the adventure. He's such a sweet young man, I'm excited for what's in his future with Vivi quite open about things in his future. I also loved the time that was spent with some of the locals at the tavern, so much fun and hilarity, finding out some things they did not need to know!
Another great story in this series. I love the alternate view/reality from the original Alice in Wonderland, the author takes us on a whole different journey whilst still being true to the main characters and their personalities.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

This second book in the Wonderland Ever After series picks up where Blanco and Alistair’s story ended. It has taken everything I wanted from the first book and given it to me in spades. There’s world building with backstory and hints for the fall of the Queen of Hearts, the world outside the castle, and other power players, such as the Queen of Diamonds and the King of Spades. We also get hints at Hatter’s past, hints at March’s future, and hints of books to come, and all of it framed around the lovely picture that is Prince Renner.

Renner is the sixth son and twelfth child of distant, austere parents who see him as useful only in who he will marry and what alliances he will bring. Even with the weight of their indifference on his shoulders, Prince Renner has never lost his loving heart, though now that he’s had a taste of adventure, of life outside the Mirror Kingdom, he has no intention of going home. But for all that Renner is set up for the next book and given a fair share of attention, it’s Rei and Ches who are the heart (pun intended) of this story.

I liked this one much better than the first of the series. Although there is still to little romantic interaction between the MCs I just can't get mad at my kitty cat. I admit it, I have a weakness for the Cheshire cat. Maybe it didn't feel as though I was missing out, because we already got to know both MCs in the previous book. But I have to say that, if that was the first one I would have felt a bit lost with their relationship. So I would suggest to everybody to not read this as a stand-alone.

The side characters were all sweet and charming as they were in the first book. My only wish would be that the author would focus more on the couple at hand rather than setting up upcoming ones. Maybe it is just me, but I read a book because I want to read about the main couple and their path to finding love with one another and not how future couples first get to know one another and who they are. Such in depth introduction can be done in their own book. I understand that it is important to also get to know other characters to make you interested in reading their books. But that is just it. in their books not in this one.

But over all I enjoyed this short story and this strange new/old world/classic.

The covers of this series are spot-on for the vibe of the stories. The fantasy element is a part of the story with animal-shifters and some magic. But the romantic goodness, wit, charm, banter, and steam that Ariella Zoelle is known for is the main attraction. If you have enjoyed her other love stories, I think you would find the Wonderland Ever After series as entertaining.

I actually loved book 2 even more than Alistair in Wonderland! Cheshire captured my heart in the first book and I was thrilled to get more time with him while working on his second chance with King Rei. Cheshire is always charming in his pursuit and the fact that Rei also really wants to be with him makes the chase a bit easier. I enjoyed all the banter with the other Wonderland characters and loved the creative imagination that Zoelle is showing in these stories.

I would easily recommend Cheshire in Heartsland for readers looking for a feel-good love story between a pair that had a lovely relationship that was put on pause when one had to become king. You can look forward to engaging characters, laughable moments, and the romance and steam that is the signature style of Ariella Zoelle!

Loved this beautiful quote from the book and it really describes King Rei and Cheshire’s relationship to a T: “Life is too short not to be with the person you love.”

This entire book was all about Rei and Cheshire finding a way to be together again. I was so happy when they finally decided they could be together as I was so heartbroken for Cheshire. All he wanted was to be with the man he loved.

There is one scene with disguises and locals in a bar that is absolutely hilarious. Was such a fun part to read and it was so important to the story.

Once Rei and Cheshire decided they could be together I did find the book slowed down and wasn’t as exciting as the first book in the series. I also found that a lot of this book was also set up for future books. I am super excited to read about March and his fated mate in the next book and it seems like there will be more action and adventure and I’m all for that!

If anyone is looking for steam in the first chapter you’ve got it with this book! Same with book 1!

This is book 2 in the series and it could be read as a standalone but I absolutely recommend reading book 1 in the series first.

With all the build up for Cheshire’s story in the previous book, I could not wait to read this story and I loved it. Such a fun spin on the classic Wonderland story and characters.

Cheshire and King Rei were together before when Rei was just the Prince. Once he became King, Rei’s dedication to becoming the ruler his mother was not and his fear that the people wouldn’t accept Cheshire led him to end his relationship with him. For three years they have danced around one another with the king adamant that they can no longer be together. However, once Alistair returns the magic to Wonderland and Prince Renner arrives for a magic interview, things begin to change within the kingdom. I loved the storyline and how bits from the original fairytale are woven into the book. The characters are fun and delightful but with their own unique feel to them and the characters that are not from the original story blend so well.

This was a fun and fast read and a definite read for those who appreciate the classic for its quirkiness and light hearted feel. I enjoyed Renner’s character and glad he is getting a book of his own! I can’t wait to see where he and March end up!

I cannot love him the same way I live and breathe for you

This is book 2 in the Wonderland Ever After series. Book 1 was Bianco, the White Rabbit, and Alistair (descendant of the original Alice).
Book 2 is about Rei the King of Hearts and Cheshire the infamous cat.

The world building and character development in this series is so good. It appears that there will be books for all the characters that Ariella has introduced us to. Yay! We still have Hatter, March Hare and the caterpillar (Vivalter the rainbow butterfly).

If you haven't read book one, you need to stop now and go read it first. You'll be sorry you missed out if you skip book one, it sets the stage for this unfolding fairytale story.

Cheshire has waited so long and not so patiently (e.g. stolen crowns) for King Rei to realize that they are meant to be together. Now Prince Renner arrives for a marriage interview with the king. Wait and see what Cheshire has in store for the little princeling interloper.

This was a quick read at 171 pages, I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

For love and land

An excellent second book! It was made clear in the first book that Cheshire and Rei were mates, but getting them together was proving very difficult as Rei knew there was distrust for shifters in Wonderland, and Cheshire wouldn't let Rei know about their connection. It seemed that this would be an impossible feat to get past in this book but it was done just right.

Though there is some worry about loss and timing, this is not a read full of angst. The introduction of an outside character helps to bring a new perspective as well as shake things up. It finally gives Rei and Cheshire a chance, as well as looking into whether they always had a chance or if things have been different. It was really interesting both to get to see some more of the history of Wonderland as well as how things were now with the magic back.

The next story promises to bring things to another land, over to Mirrorland, along with some foretold problems and new characters to fix it. It promises to be just as good as the books so far and I look forward to reading it!

King of Hearts Rei, has vowed to give up his love, Cheshire, for the good of the kingdom. Cheshire on the other hand, isn’t about to let that happen.

Cheshire may be my favorite character ever. At times I could see him as the character from that unnamed cartoon which doesn’t really apply here but it’s where my brain went. His spontaneity was so sweet and refreshing. The visuals I got from this book were very vivid and enjoyable. I liked that the story was so sweetly presented. The characters had no artifice but weren’t one dimensional. They were all represented as truly nice and each personality was defined by their interactions with the characters around them. For those that want to know, there were plenty of steamy and magical times between Cheshire and Rei.

This was just a very enjoyable book for me. Great characters and nice storytelling. I’m looking forward to the next story.

“Every breath you take makes me love you more—even when you use it to say such silly things about me not being able to love you. There is no one who loves you more than me. Nothing will ever change that.”

Poor Cheshire. I knew this book would get to me in some respects because Rei has been denying his and Cheshire’s love ever since he was crowned king. Why he is convinced the kingdom wouldn’t like it is his problem to overcome, but he is breaking Cheshire’s heart in the process. But things have a way of working themselves out in this author’s books, so I had faith! Also I could see the mischief coming a mile away. 😘 These characters! I love them. Prince Renner was a lot of fun too. He deserves his own HEA. This book was just as good as the first one. I have to confess though that Cheshire is my favorite. He has long been my favorite character from Alice in Wonderland.

Wonderful Wonderland…

I cannot get enough of this series, especially the amazing world building and character development! I think I started the Ellezabeth Fan Club, which is splendid for me. I hope she continues to pop up. Waiting patiently for book three is going to be impossible, so I’ll settle for being desperately needy instead. If you haven’t experienced the brilliant mind of this author, I beg you to hurry up and devour this series, then move on to her other works. You’ll never regret reading rainbows and sunshine, especially when every page gives your heart a recharge from everything awful in the world. 15/10, this book was wonderful and Cheshire and Rei made such a gorgeous love story! I only wish it had been longer, which is always my complaint with Ariella’s books. It’s never enough!

The Cheshire cat is not happy that King Rei is choosing his kingdom over him. He has waited three years for his fated mate and wants his mate now. When a rival prince arrives to try and woo his mate, Cheshire is determined to do whatever is necessary to prevent his success. When he meets this rival prince, he decides he has gone about this all wrong and enlists his aid. Prince Renner is a genius at his job and convinces Rei to go incognito to a local pub to see how his people really feel. What he finds is surprising.

Cheshire is amazing. He is willing to sacrifice his happiness until Rei to come to his senses. Rei wants Cheshire but is not sure his people will accept him. Enter Prince Renner and everything changes. The amazing heroes are incredible and the other characters really enhance the story. This is a fun read and the good part is that there is more to come.

Antics and Fate

Cheshire in Heartland is the second book in the Wonderland Ever After series, a series with a new take on the Alice in Wonderland tales. This book is best read after the first book since there is a lot of worldbuilding and character development that took place in that book, however, you can still enjoy Cheshire’s antics and Rei’s emotional dilemma even if you read this book as a standalone. I find the world building really fascinating and I like seeing how the author expanded and built on the already established lore. The plot is fluffy and fun, and while it toys with the concept of angst, it pretty much skirts it completely and everything is kept light and sweet with a lot of humor. The book also wove in the setup for the third book where Prince Renner will finally find his happiness.

I love Alice in Wonderland, so I'm always looking for stories in that world. Make it MM, and I can't seem to stay away. This is book 2, and I didn't read book 1. I understood what had happened, but I missed a lot of the drama that book 1 hints at, which was about the "Alice" of these stories. This book is about the new King of Heart and the Cheshire Cat. And depending on the event in book 1, this might take place about three years after book 1.

First, there is basically subsurface level angst/tension in this book. And it's a lot of talking about how hard the situation is. I'm sure I read the same phrase (which isn't a catch phrase) like 5 times in the book. I was really over it. Then there was all the talk of Cheshire's chaos, but no visibility or on page action. All these made the story fall flat for me.

What an amazing story! I’ve been looking forward to Cheshire’s story and it did not disappoint! This author has such a way with world building and character development that is awesome! I love the antics that Cheshire gets up to but am so happy to see he has a truly deep love for King Rei and just wants to be with him. My heart goes out to the king for everything he thinks he’s got to give up for his people. We get to meet Prince Renner in this book and he was quite unexpected but so enjoyable. This was such a fantastic read and I am absolutely loving this series with such a twist on this classic! Absolute entertaining and enjoyable read that I very highly recommend! I am voluntarily leaving an honest review for this complimentary copy of this book

Ariella Zoelle has such a way with words! The way she brings these characters to life is absolutely magical. Cheshire is the most brilliant character...he is cunning, mischievous, loyal, naughty, and so in love with Rei that it melts your heart! Rei is also in love with Cheshire, but sometimes duty has to come first. I love how persistent Cheshire is in his pursuit of Rei and how willing he is to wait as long as necessary for Rei to realize that they belong together. The things that are meant to keep them apart soon become the means for them to find their way to their happily ever after and it is so entertaining! I highly recommend this book as well as Ariella's full catalog. She is truly brilliant.
