When real-life stress and sorrow make uber-angsty stories unpalatable, I reach for Laurie Ryan's Willow Bay series, lovely, beachy, small-town romance with found family elements, wonderful community, and the secret meddlings of Gladys, the town's "unhoused" guardian who's keeping some juicy secrets about her past.
This latest installment is a delight. A bit of insta-lust, a sprinkle of steam, tons of small-town charm, an overprotective alpha-ish fire chief with a broken heart and a heavy load of guilt, a saucy innkepper with bitter secrets of her own. Both protagonists have reasons aplenty for avoiding love, and when it finds them, they've got a big, rocky hill of obstacles to climb. Toss in some nasty villains, sprinkle with Willow Bay sea salt, and enjoy!
