A Novel of the Law describing the descent of a lawyer who represents big, nasty law firms and a famous dictator into deep trouble after an employee embroils his firm in a data theft.
I may not have "liked" Book of Business, but I did read Book of Business, and have the following to say: If you already hate lawyers, this book will not compel you to reconsider. If you thrill at wormy behavior, international intrigue and grim assessments of the human heart (meaning it all comes down to money, power and dodging the shank), then this is the book for you. However, be warned: this is not The Firm. Tom Cruise and some pretty lady lawyer will not stumble into a den of corruption and lies that eventually threatens the sanctity of their kissy-face marriage and precious moral fiber. Nobody will sacrifice himself for the greater good, narrowly avert a bullet or hold on, just long enough to be pulled back from the ledge by the one they love. Instead, Gus Bondoc endures a 300-page Mexican stand-off with a cast of characters culled from an industry and a world where watching someone fall is more profitable (and entertaining) than helping them up. From Haitian Dictators to sexy spy secretaries, BoB has all the accoutrements of dime store pulp, despite being lacquered over by a "high-stakes civil-law" setting and a stream of mostly penetrable lawyer-speak. Meaning, in short, that the despicable acts and near death turns all have other, more affluent handles. Also, according to a blurb, Book of Business is a "roman á clef," or "book with a key," meaning a book that describes real-life events behind the façade of fiction. Which, in time, just might elevate Book of Business from the airport rack to the exhibit pile. Love it or hate it, Book of Business is completely worth what little time we all have.
Started this a while ago in support of the author and just haven't finished it yet. I had some trouble with the first few chapters but it is getting easier and more interesting as the book goes on. I hear his next book is going to be very good:)
