REVIEW OF THE BOOK "SS INDIGO: TWELVE'S COMPANY" BY WILLY MITCHELL.

Mitchell’s background as a storyteller shines through in the details—the ship’s mechanics, the Caribbean geography, and the 2003 setting (pre-smartphone era) which makes the isolation feel real. While it doesn't reinvent the mystery genre, it executes the "shady billionaire/mysterious past" formula with a lot of heart.

The setup is a classic "too good to be true" scenario. Twelve strangers are invited by a mysterious billionaire to a private cruise under the guise of an investment opportunity.

The Strength: The pacing is solid. Mitchell uses the setting of a ship effectively; you feel the physical isolation. The "one thing in common" trope is what keeps you turning the pages—trying to figure out the thread that connects a group of people who seemingly have nothing to do with each other.

The Weakness: If you are a veteran mystery reader, some of the "surprises" might feel familiar.

With twelve main characters plus a crew, the "room" gets crowded. The Captain: Igor Bromovich is the standout. He’s a man looking for redemption, and his perspective gives the story a grounded, professional feel.

The Group: Because there are so many people (The "Twelve"), some characters feel more like "types" (the businessman, the socialite, etc.) than fully fleshed-out humans. However, Mitchell excels at giving them distinct voices so you don't get them confused, which is a difficult feat with such a large cast.

The Connection: The way their pasts are slowly unpeeled is the best part of the character work. You start off liking some and hating others, only to have those feelings flip as their secrets come out.

My Take: This is a "vacation read" in the best sense. It’s atmospheric, easy to digest, and perfect for a weekend.

If you have ever arrived at a place and wondered 'what on earth am I doing here?' SS Indigo is exactly the book for you! Sailing the Caribbean on an exquisitely restored vessel, this multifarious guest complement intrigues and delights. Every character makes you feel that you know somebody just like that. In this well-curated work, Willy Mitchell succeeds in recounting circumstances relating to each passenger, their past, and current state in a fitting manner.

Several incidents reminded me how thin the layer of civilization's veneer can be in this region, yet Willy maintained the authentic ambiance of a small-scale luxury cruise. As he seamlessly weave in and out of the real histories of the Caribbean, I was delighted, mesmerized, and stunned by how this journey transpired.

Don't be surprised if Mitchell's storytelling prompt you to reach for binoculars as to confirm there are no pirates’ vessels up close, legendary in the Caribbean's history! SS Indigo is delightful read that grabbed my focus and kept me on the edge of my seat!
