Watch out Montreal. You’re in for a fiery ride.

I knew three things about my life before adoption: I was a baby rescued from a blazing house fire, I was found in the arms of a dead man, and no one ever came to claim me.

No one. Not ever.

Now, as a Montreal detective, I’m dedicated to hunting truths for a living. Unheard voices. Cold cases. Unsolved mysteries. Unearthing secrets hidden in the shadows is my jam.

Until the fae veil falls…

When the world learns magic is real, everything changes. Montreal begins seething with prana energy, dormant genes activate, and seemingly normal humans experience magical awakenings.

I have an awakening.

Suddenly, everything I’ve obsessed over about my violent beginnings sucker-punches me in the gut. And what’s worse—the murderous factions who hunted me so long ago are back on my scent.

Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.

Incendio: Flame Born is book one of a spin-off series from Case Files of an Urban Druid and Chronicles of an Urban Druid before that. Join Jules and her found family as they fight the fight and discover who and what they are destined to become.

This is what I shall call my puke review, which is essentially me just barfing my annoyances with this audiobook in completely random order. I don't have the bandwidth to write an actual review. Probably because I'm drunk. Please excuse any misspellings. I listened to the audiobook and have no idea if there are funkily-spelled names and whatnot. Also, I'm drunk. And maybe a little mean. Apologies in advance. Oh. And probably lots of spoilers. Proceed with caution.

I chuckle.
Briar grunts.
Charlie chuckles.
Zephyr shrugs.
Tad chuckles.
Kenzie laughs.

If you like sentence variation in your stories, you won't find much here. The sentences tend toward the choppy and repetitious, subject-verb. Fun fact: "Chuckle" is one of my most hated words in the English language. It was used 78 times in this book, sometimes twice in the same paragraph.

Jules Gagne has the personality of a petulant ladybug. Tad sounds like the goddamn Lucky Charms leprechaun. LeMeck is a mustache-twirling villain. The profuse one-liners meant to be zingers are really just bad cliches.

For the love of Dog, narrators, could you pleassssse sssssssstop with the ssssssssharp sssssssssssssss? You're not only giving me a headache, but you're throwing me out of the story, like, every other word. Also, stop reading books like you're on the goddamn six o'clock news. A little emotion goes a long way, though there was very little of it in this book to convey, so I guess I'll just shut up about that for now.

Lots of telling. Very little showing.

Kenzie - Black girl (and one of the only people of color in the book) who talks like the most annoying Valley Girl who ever vallied gets turned blue. Why didn't anyone else's skin turn a different color? Why couldn't it have been one of the many white people who turned blue? Why am I having this conversation about skin color? I DON'T KNOW BUT IT JUST FEELS ICKY

Asland. I'm sorry, but there was no way I was taking a wise, talking dog seriously. It was so dumb.

What was the point of the twins? They were basically potential hit bait that never got taken, and they reappeared at the end for no reason. Poorly used plot device? Or me not paying attention because I was bored? Only the universe knows.

Speaking of the universe and tangents, I hate stories with multiple types of magical creatures that overlap discrete worlds. Race wars between fantastical groups get old, especially when we see it in real life EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Asland looking buff and hot at the end was just gross.

BOTTOM LINE:
When I read a book, I want to either care about a character or laugh about a character. The lack of emotional connection for me with INCENDIO might've been okay if there had been humor, or if the characters had interesting personalities. No one had a compelling flaw, quirk, or secret to keep my attention or intrigue me. I just couldn't connect with any of the characters or the story. I think the overall story generally made sense, but it just wasn't executed in an interesting way for me.

No clear motivations. Lackluster conflict was mostly external. A series of situations with no emotional glue.

Sorry. I was drunk.

Bleh

Couldn't do it, sounded like this would be a good read but turns out that the main character is so full of herself you know what should be coming out her ears, bleh.

This is a decent enough book and a rather entertaining to read. However, this book is essentially a spin off from the Chronicles of an Urban Druid series. That is a series that I very much liked. That series started off with 4 out of 5 stars and pretty much stayed there for the journey. So knowing that this book is in the same universe and with Fiona & Co even making some brief appearances, I do tend to set the bar a bit higher.

If you want to be cynical about it you could say that this series I nothing but an attempt to repeat the success with Chronicles of an Urban druid by following the same recipe but changing the druid for an elemental and the rather charming Irish brogue with some French equivalent.

Well, this first book in the series is not the same instant success for me as Chronicles of an Urban Druid.

The urban elemental part works but the French dialect is rather awkward and does not at all have the same charm as the Irish brogue. Yes, I speak French so no, it is not just me not understanding.

Also, the book fumbles around for quite a while before anything interesting really happens and then it goes into overdrive with the main protagonist learning that she is an elemental, training, taking on ancient enemies etc… at warp speed. I mean, come on, we’re told that this enemy, the six, more or less laid waste to entire kingdoms and almost brought about the extinction of elementals but before the end of the book this newbie elemental goes up against one of them?

Overall the story and the book as a whole did not feel as thought through and worked on as the books in Chronicles of an Urban druid.

As I wrote it is a decent enough book and it was entertaining to read so I will continue the series, for now. I just hope that little cynical voice in my head saying this is just a case of quickly pushing out a bunch of books to cash in some more on previous successes is wrong.

To quote Paul Harvey, “And now for the rest of the story!”

Oh, I am so excited by this new series, let me tell you. Whereas Fiona’s stories are more personality driven, they are, after all, stories ABOUT Fiona, this one is all story driven and truly lets Auburn Tempest’s talents shine through. This book is not NEARLY as much fun as watching the Fam Jam get over more outrageous, not by a long shot. Instead it has an urgency that makes it compelling, rather than fun.

THIS (forming) team of paranormals isn’t going to have it quite as easy as Fi and her family. Fi’s family experienced almost no growing pains other than the minimum requisite required for the story to not be ridiculous. For a novel focused on personality that’s just fine. This team, however, seems to have nothing BUT growing pains, and it’s WONDERFUL. We get to really appreciate Auburn’s writing here.

Absent the arguably hilarious slapstick and dialogue, her use of story rhythm and timing powerfully builds that “narrative anxiety” which we as readers love to experience. Absent that awesome, but arguably overwhelming, intensity of pathos and joy, I found myself caught up by her phrasing and word choices. They leap out and undeniably bring you into that moment with the characters.

And entirely because it’s not easy for them and because it’s not really a story focused on any one of them, I found that I came to care for these characters much more quickly and deeply than I did for Fiona’s supporting cast.

Don’t get wrong, I love my Irish Lass and wouldn’t change a thing (amiright?). I’m simply saying Auburn Tempest’s talents are much more obvious now, and I’m really happy to discover her talents go far beyond great storytelling. So…. ENJOY!

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.5*

Set in the same world as the Urban Druid and it's spin off 'Case files of an Urban Druid'. I had only read the first book of the original series, but did not feel like I was missing key information.

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Puh. This was one bad read. I gave it 170 pages, before I started to skip. First it took a hundred pages to get to the point we all knew was coming: Jules learning she‘s Fae. Until then it halfway worked, though Jules and her siblings were too childish for my liking. But there was a case and a few promising glimpses into the magical world. But then the awakening happened and sorry, that was so badly written, with no emotion, way too rushed and written with no love while the siblings all acted like petulant children. It didn’t get better, rather worse. They train and master everything almost immediately, the jokes are juvenile and not really funny, nothing that happens really is capturing me in any way. The most adult and interesting character is Ted, but he’s a sidekick that can’t save this series.
So that’s it for me. Hopefully my next book is better.

Spin-off from the Urban Druid world. During the timeframe when Fi’s group are rescuing San Francisco

After the veil falls, Montreal cop Juliet Gagne has her magic awakened. Jules is a foul-mouthed, unladylike orphan who drives a Harley. She lives in an inherited firehouse with the other assorted orphans adopted by the Gagne family. When Jules’s brother is kidnapped the children find out that they are elemental children being hidden from the fae world and demon hunters wanting their power. Fi’s group (Urban Druid) show up to help rescue him and Tad stays to help train the now-grown children.

Fave scenes: helping the newly awakened man in the park, choosing weapons, the drunk bat and Jule’s seeing the inside of their house.

Not genuine

Not genuine. This is just a how to move on. You believe in what's her name. But people have told you you have to stop. No, you do not have to stop. As long as you have wonderful stories which you do. Continue to make your characters alive. To bring them alive for your readers. Building on you can have only so many books. I love your series. I am in awe that you have been able to write basicly a book a month. Honey, don't let them tell you what you know in your heart. You have many adventures there for team trouble. Don't let them sic you out. You do you! My love. You are giving me faith.

Here they are the four misfits that just discover they are Fae. four elemental Fae

Just what is trueth. We all just discovered we are elemtal Fae, earth, wind, water and fire. Now we have to figure out how to handle those powers. A friend has sent them Tad a Druid who is at a lose end for now to help our former dog who is actually a guardian element to train us, to show us how to survive when the Six find us. But this isn’t as easy as it sounds, we are four adopted kids who have grown up together and have a bond that is very strong. But we screw up a lot because we are different

Elementals

Jules is a police officer in Montreal chasing after a drug dealer who is selling a new drug on the streets. While she is trying to find the head drug dealer she finds out that her adopted family and herself are elementals and that some evil demons want to absorb their powers and kill them all. Great first book in the series, I love all the characters and enjoyed the visit of Fi and her family from the Urban Druid series. I cannot wait for the next books in both series.

An interesting spin-off.

I enjoy the Urban Druid series, so I was interested when I saw there was a spin-off series. While I didn’t fall in love with it, I did enjoy where the book was going, both plot and character wise, so I will read book two when it comes out, just to see if I want to continue. If you’ve never read the Urban Druid series, don’t worry as bits of the backstory are filled in as you need it. - but would recommend reading at least the original series for the best experience.

Fun and fast-paced.

I love this first in the new series, at first I thought it was just going to be a spin-off from the Urban Druid series but this is much more. Well well-written and filled with kick-ass characters including Fae Druids and an assortment of magical creatures both good and bad (as in Hellspawn bad ). The best part for me is the interaction between the siblings as they deal with their new " normal" It's priceless add in the humour action snark and general badassery and you have this unputdownable gem, not to be missed, Baz.

This started ok, I was happy that it was better than some of the other cheap garbage I had bought on sale from audible…then we get to the reveal and it’s just so eye rolling and cringe worthy. Started as a 4, dropped instantly to a 2…marking as a 3 for now with much lower hopes.

ETA:

This is like a made-for-TV teen movie, maybe I’m just too old for this. It got worse. Skipped a huge chunk and sped it up just to make it to the end. Should have saved my time. 2 stars is all I can give it. Will not continue and don’t see myself reading other books from these authors.

A wonderful Book to lose some down time on.

I just said it was wonderful Book what more do you need ! May I recommend paying Amazon for Kindle Unlimited if you are like me and way more than 10 books a month even at £3 per book that would be £30 for under £10 you have an unlimited selection you can choose from. I would say I read 20 books per month so Kindle saves me a lot of money. And all of these books are part of Kindle. And download to your tablet or computer. Enjoy 😉

Remember the action flicks in the 1980s where all the characters were badasses? The main character in this book is nothing like any of them.

I knew I was taking a risk with the whole Canadian cop thing. The plot is slow and develops pretyy much as one would expect. The arcane world seems a bit shadowy, but it is somewhat interesting.

All of the characters were pretty much cardboard.

I have to say that this series did not meet my expectations. After reading Chronicles of an Urban Druid and Case Files of an Urban Druid, this series fell flat. There was not enough background story to get to know the characters or why they were there. I would have liked to know more about the war that broke out and how their people were decimated. But we go straight into the now and don't get a real understanding of the hate between the species.

Awesome beginning

New series, with really likeable characters and the return of known and loved characters. The story is really good and catches and holds the attention. I read this in one sitting, I didn’t want to put it down. I love spending time in this world. I can’t wait for the next instalment.

Great Start!

Jules, Briar, Zepher, and MacKenzie are adopted orphans. But not just orphans. The protections hiding their true nature fail as a side effect of the great reveal.

Now they are in danger and have to get good fast at defending themselves.

Great story with lots of action, good dialog, and a profound sense of family.

Eagerly awaiting the next book!

Really enjoyed this book!

This book has a really interesting and exciting storyline. I like the characters and how they relate to one another. A family charged with saving the world as they learn who they are and the power they wield. Can’t wait for the next book to continue the journey.

great fantasy/paranormal fiction

Usually spin-offs are just sad imitation of the original. Incendio: Flame Born is not one of those kind of spin-offs, thank goodness! Jules and her adopted siblings make this book (series) an excellent read and can stand alone without the Urban Druid series. I am excited to read the second book in the series.

Excellent and entertaining start to this series!!!!!

Congratulations to Auburn Tempest and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and e,xciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories.

Montreal vs Toronto - or and vs vs

Really nice start to a different set of characters that tie back into the Druid’s in the burbs
If someone picked this up before reading Fiona’s and Shaun’s 22(?) stories, you really need to go read them first. They give a whole lot of context and build up the world that the elementals find themselves in!

Thank you for another great story!

DNF @36%. It wasn't deep, it wasn't funny, it wasn't dramatic, it wasn't quirky, it wasn't really anything other than a bit dull. I felt like I was drowning in blah reading this (not helped by following on from a good read for me), decided I'd eaten enough cardboard, and will try and find something with a bit of flavour.

Didn’t love. It should have all the makings of a book i’d love, but I just didn’t. I was excited to read it as I enjoyed the first book in Fiona’s story. But this one felt so chaotic. It had no direction. And I struggled to care about the characters and where they were going.

May or may not continue.

Great Fun Read

I love the characters and the author does a great job in developing them even in the short time period. I also love stories where people learn who they are and what their strengths are. The sense of family that this group of unrelated people build is heart warming. The author is a very talented story teller and I can't wait to see where she takes us.

Awesome read

As an avid fantasy reader of many authors and from Toronto , I thoroughly enjoyed the story .
A bit slow at first but the story line gets fast soon . Having a series based in Canada was awesome .
Finding out the characters were fake in hiding was nicely done . Good on ya both !!!

The family has extended!!

I see this not as a spin-off but an extension of the family. The new members are just as warm, quirky and kick-ass as the Toronto fam. I look forward to their adventures xx

Good beginning

The first book in the new series set in the Urban druid World. This book sets the stage with the background and conflict for the characters. I enjoyed this and liked the family dynamics. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Anything with Michaels name on it is good. Getting to know a new author is an added bonus. The characters were really cool. There's lots of action and magic. How can you go wrong?
