It’s only been about a month since I started watching the Wind Breaker anime, and I already caved and started reading the manga 😩 I really tried to fight the urge to read the manga…but I love my babies too much 😭 I want more content of them, and I was willing to read the story from the very beginning to get ALL the content.
First of all, I’m usually bored when I’m reading a story I’ve already consumed in anime format…but I was completely locked in reading this. The anime was pretty faithful to this initial installment in the series, but I still found myself pulled right in by the characters.
I find Sakura to be a compelling protagonist because, at face value, he’s a pretty straightforward character. He’s a loner, and all he knows is how to fight. His one priority is proving that he’s the best at fighting. However, there’s far more to him than initially meets the eye. Sakura is not just alone, but he’s lonely. He’s grown up being bullied and rejected for his outward appearance, but in his heart he’s actually been craving acceptance and love. Therefore, when faced with acts of kindness, he’s easily overwhelmed because he’s unfamiliar with how to respond to them. His instinct is to reject the generosity of the new people around him, but it’s mostly because he’s not used to being cared for and supported.
In addition, Sakura highly values strength and fighting, but he has a very rigid view of what that means. Most of the fights he ends up becoming involved in is because whoever he’s fighting has proven, in his opinion, to be lesser and in need of being cut down to size. He finds most typical “delinquents” insufferable because they often prey on the weak, and they depend on big numbers to intimidate and overpower others. Thus, he quickly finds a level of respect for some of the Furin boys because the way they fight aligns far more with his own moral compass and view of the world.
All that to say… Sakura is far more than the simpleminded boy he may appear to be on the surface. I adore him. He’s my lil meow meow. I have the adoption papers ready to be signed. That’s my son, and I love and cherish him. He needs to be protected at all costs 💖😭💖
As for the other characters, I found myself feeling even more fond towards Nirei reading the manga. He’s such a sweet little nerd. He has such good intentions, so much passion in his heart, and such a big brain. I adore that lil nerd 💖 His growth journey will be so rewarding to follow as he’s, even evident in this first volume, probably the weakest student at Furin. I’m rooting for you, Nirei!
Finally, I think it’s important to mention Kotoha. She’s really the first person Sakura meets in this neighborhood, and she’s one of the characters that directly makes Sakura question the way he views the world. She sees the potential in him immediately, but she also quickly spots his shortcomings. She never really pushes Sakura to believe exactly what she does, but she does point to flaws in Sakura’s logic and provides a different lens for him to see the world through. For me, this makes her compelling, but I must also admit that because of it I feel like she reads as being much older than Sakura. She’s not. They’re basically the same age (if I’m remembering correctly from having looked it up while watching the anime). I think she needed to be a bit less wise for her to truly feel like she’s Sakura’s contemporary and not senior.
Anyways. I could keep going on and on about the characters…but I’d rather hold off until we get to volumes that feature some of them more prominently 😂
P.S. Of course Sugishita is a Scorpio. I can always clock a fellow Scorpio in a story 💀
