No Longer Scarborough

Rate this book
Nova’s Diary.

Date: Unknown.

We never should’ve come.

It was supposed to be a supply run. Just me and Brooke. In and out within a day or two. I thought we were prepped. I was wrong.

The town has changed. Things are missing. Things are broken. And there’s death. Not from sickness, but from murder.

And now we can see lights on in The Grand, and hear laughter and screams in the streets nearby.

We never should’ve come. This is no longer Scarborough.

Told in diary format from the POV of Nova, who survived a pandemic that wiped out most of the population. She teams up with another young woman, Brooke, to try and scavenge and survive.

Being a novella, the story isn't dragged out, but it's long enough to get to know Nova and Brooke pretty well. As always, in any dangerous situation, humans are the most dangerous predators, and this is no exception.

Nova is a bit of a history nerd, and I liked the addition of history facts about the towns sprinkled into the story.

I’ll be honest, I nearly stopped reading this book when the narrator quoted Enoch Powell in the first couple of pages, but I’m glad I pressed on despite my reservations.

A really tight novella, one that benefited from being set in familiar locations to me and a good addition to the post-apocalyptic canon. Scarily plausible in places it still has the decency to not be too haunting as to give nightmares.

I really enjoyed this fast paced novella. Scarborough was the perfect backdrop - there is something about a northern English seaside town that lends itself brilliantly to post-apocolyptic settings, and Clark nailed it. Even though this is a short, quick read, I got to know Star and Brooke well, and was rooting for them the whole way.
