A young woman and her dragon must free their kingdom from evil magic…

King Onyx has kept Tenegard ensorcelled for too long. Dragon rider Cora, along with her dragon, Alaric, are determined to free the kingdom from his sinister grasp. With the aid of rebel forces, they’re training a new wave of dragon riders—the first the country has seen in a century—but will their forces be enough to combat King Onyx's dark magic? In his quest for power and immortality, there’s no line he won’t cross and nothing he won’t risk. With the nation on the brink of war, the stakes have never been higher.

The rebels must do whatever it takes to cut off the sorcerer king from his source of power, before it's too late. If they fail to stop him, his corrupting reach will extend far beyond Tenegard.

And all hope will be lost…

Ava Richardson writes epic page-turning Young Adult Fantasy books. She creates lovable characters and drops them into intricate worlds that are barely contained within your eReader. Ava has written 21 YA dragon fantasy series, including her bestselling series Return of the Darkening and her recent series, Destia's Dragon Shifter War.

She grew up on a steady diet of fantasy and science fiction books handed down from her two big brothers – and despite being dog-eared and missing pages, she loved escaping into the magical worlds that those authors created. Her favorites were the ones about dragons; where they’d swoop, dive and soar through the skies of these enchanted lands.

This is book three of the Rise of the Dragon Riders and the main character is young dragon rider Cora and her dragon Alaric, who became bonded after she learnt a few of the symbols of Dragon Tongue her Gran Livi had shown her in the caves above her small village of Barcroft, in Tenegard. She managed to rescue her falsely imprisoned father, who was sentenced to forced labour in the fortress of Llys, but they had missed saving Alaric’s mother by just a day. King Onyx had come back to the fortress, picking up his ward Octavia and others, bringing his mother with him, not knowing that he will soon be betrayed by someone very close to him! His soothsayer has already told him of her visions of his death and he has done all he can to destroy all the former dragon riders and their dragons, leaving the population of Tenegard under a spell for decades, to make them disbelieve their own history as Fairytales and to hate and fear dragons, as being wild, destructive beasts. Cora. Alaric and a few key rebels lead them to the rebel stronghold, where the wild dragons agreed to work with the humans and see if any could bond with them. Cora needs to train others as dragon riders if they are to have any chance of stopping the king’s plans for war against his former country and using the poor people of Tenegard as his pawns.

Octavia has begun to realise exactly how evil the king actually is and that what he has been doing is wrong. She has a plan to help someone she has become close to, but will be in danger trying to do so. King Onyx has been using dragon scales and his dark magic to make matters worse for the people of Tenegard and taking everything from the people of the country to supply his war efforts. Cora meets Strida, one of the dragon scale scavengers from her own village, only to hear that matters have gotten worse and people are being arrested for anything and conscripted into he king’s army against their will. There is a slow burn romance with Faron who has bonded with a dragon called Wyn and whom Cora has started to trust and become close to. The king is trying to find the location of the rebels, wanting to wipe them out before they can become powerful enough to stop him! His foreign magic can only do so much, but he has perverted the magic to his darkest desires and will be harder to take down than they can ever imagine. Cora tries to train the new dragon riders and the once wild dragons, but soon finds herself questioning her own capabilities when she sees what else King Onyx has waiting for them. They must destroy the source of his power once Cora manages to figure out what it might be and do everything to stop the coming war. Octavia will have a key role to play, as she faces the very people that King Onyx wants to destroy, seeking a path to bring both sides together in peace, rather than war.

It will bring Cora, Alaric and the rest of the rebels, face to face with King Onyx and his army, with his dark soldiers and a new foe, bespelled to do as the king demands against their own will, same as with the enforced conscripts. His corruption and destruction has already spread wide and far, in his quest for vengeance against his own people’s rulers and his desire for immortality and power, he will do anything and use anyone to get what he wants, no matter the cost. If they cannot defeat him, then his corruption will reach far outside their own shores and there will be no hope left. Far too many people believe all of his lies, due to his dark magic keeping them in the dark for the whole of their lives. Cora and Alaric have progressed their bond and their magic, but are nowhere close to the confidence she will need, sooner rather than later. Thankfully she has the support and belief of the rebels and even their leaders, whilst also making concessions on a recent breakdown of trust with Tamsin, which will lead them to a possible tool to use against the king and bring down his evil plans once and for all. Only they do not have as much time as they hoped and must change their plans on the fly to succeed. So much has happened to Cora and Alaric, and they are no longer alone, but their story hasn’t quite finished yet and I look forward to the next edition in the series.

I was hoping this book had better developments than Dragon Scale, but unfortunately, it ended up falling short of my expectations.

While picking up the momentum of the previous book, it started to draw out uncessarily at parts. And where parts needed the most attention, particularly the ending, it was rushed.

The main antagonist, King Onyx, is renowned as this all-powerful savior, and no one is able to match his strength.

In addition to the shortcomings of the plot, the relationship developments were very rushed and plain. Between saving their parents and the romantic developments, there was very little substance to make me feel any endearment towards the characters' interactions towards each other. The romance involves too much telling and rather plain dialogue than natural displays of affection. Because of the lack of showing, the author seemed to overcompensate in repetitive, over-gushing dialogue, especially between Cora and Alaric. I'm not a fan of many times Cora was self depreciating, only to have Alaric immediately console her. It seemed like she didn't learn from her mistakes or listen to Alaric.

Overall, it's an okay sequel with some suspenseful moments, but I have the same sentiments for this book as I did with the previous two, and the ending needed more substance.

Plotlines Merge; The End of a Major Story Arc

I have read or listened to several series by this author, and this may be my favorite one yet! This particular book of this powerfully written fantasy series pulls together some separate threads from prior books and finishes a long chapter in the overarching plot of the series’ story. In the previous books, we followed two heroines, one a young dragon rider—the first in many generations—and a princess who became disenchanted with her role as heir to a villainous king. In this book, their paths finally cross; we had watched their stories independently of each other previously. The heroines are quite different but are strong women in their own right. The dragons are fantastic major characters as well, especially mother and son, the son the dragon for the first dragon rider and the mother the dragon of the princess. As always, I appreciate the plot’s twists and turns in this author's stories, and the battle at the end was epic, as it should be in tales like this. The way magic works in this world and how the riders’ bonds with their dragons—and what that means—are well thought out, making logical sense as each challenge arises and is faced. This book also has some romances that add urgency and poignancy to the story, giving the characters they're involved with even more to lose and more to inspire them to defeat the villain against horrendous odds. While this book could certainly be understood as a standalone—the author does an excellent job catching the reader up at the beginning of the story without it feeling like a massive info dump—you would most enjoy this story if you read or listened to the prior books, both of which are excellent and absolute joys to listen to. I highly recommend this series and this author.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

The third and final book in this series doesn't disappoint. Cora and her dragon Alaric have been welcomed into the rebel army and are training more dragon riders with bonded dragons.

She has many challenges, not least of which is her headstrong nature, which can and does lead her into all kinds of trouble. This time, however, it isn't just her safety that is at risk. As the de facto leader of the newly formed dragon riders, she has to think of them and the rebel army. Cora has to grow into her new role quickly and, as a leader, has to make some difficult decisions. King Onyx continues to build his army of invasion, but he needs to stop the rebels from diverting his resources. Allies and families are at risk. Cora has to learn to trust her instincts and have faith her riders have her back.

There are two very different magic systems in play and Onyx has intertwined the two with devastating results.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the development of the characters. There is plenty of dragon action, prophecies to fulfil, mistakes aplenty, a bit of romance and an unexpected ending. This is a brilliant read.

Dragon Fire is the conclusion to 'Rise of the Dragon Riders' series. Much has come to pass, and Cora is now training dragon riders to put an end to King Onyx cruel reign. Cora and leaders of the rebels have found the value of the dragon scales that Onyx has been stockpiling, this information alone crucial. Octavia his heir along with her bonded dragon Raksha are on a different mission to help the rebels defeat Onyx. Cora has learned so much in tactical knowledge and emotional relations that helps her to become a good leader, communicator member of the community. Things heat up with Faron and he introduces Cora to his aunt Elaine who becomes a valuable character in the book. I love how Ava Richardson can tell an exciting story and impart many valuable lessons in her dragon series. This new series champions a young girl from the country wanting to help her father and ends up being a leader, pick up any of Ms. Richardson's books and you can't go wrong, good for middle school young adults and all dragon lovers.

I was given a copy for free from Booksprout in exchange for an honest review.

✨Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the audiobook in order for an honest review.✨

This is my third and final review for the series. If I finish the rest, it won’t have been due to me having gotten them for free.

I just want to say that I never really had any new issues arise with this third Dragon Riders book. If you’ve seen my reviews for the other two, they’re going to explain everything about the narration for the audiobook and the writing in general. This is going to be my shortest review because quite frankly I don’t feel like repeating it all.

There was one plot hole that irritated me in this one, but I’m not going to give away any spoilers at all. I feel like most people who read this book aren’t going to be scrutinizing it like I was. What matters is that I enjoyed the first three of the Dragon Riders series and I recommend others check them out as well. :)

I really loved reading this fast-paced and addictive story! The characters are unique and interesting and the world building is awesome. There’s a lot going on in this awesome book with battles to fight, a terror of a king to be brought down, innocents to be protected and training needed to help all the rebels stay alive. How will they bring down the King and his reign of terror? My favorite character, besides Cora, is Octavia. I love the quiet strength of Octavia, her determination, intelligence and her devious way of collecting information. This action-packed book has dragons, danger, sword fighting, forest dragons, training, mystery, magic, spells, scales, King Onyx, shadow warriors, hope, suspense, battles, Athelian, allies, war, rebels, Tamsin, romance, twists and turns and more

Dragon Fire by Ava Richardson is another roaring success by the queen of Dragon riders. I this conclusion to her newest trilogy of coming-of-age story involving dragons is the perfect conclusion to the story. Within its pages, the main characters not only face challenges of leadership and strategy but of confidence and self doubt. Yet they find the courage to face those challenges. I could not stop reading it from the moment I received my copy and now can’t wait for the next story that Ava Richardson comes up with next.

Overwhelmed and Loving Every Written Page and Thought

Thank you so much Ava Richardson for never disappointing me. I have loved for decades your fascinating dragon stories. All of your characters were always well thought of and well written. Between the stories of dragons and Faes, I am just overwhelmed. This Dragon Riders series is just one many series that have happily overwhelmed me and delighted me.

I only wish that I also had the bravery and tenacity of Cora. A young woman who refused to accept defeat and just pressed on. Bonding her to the dragon named Alaric only increased her determination and strength. I am looking forward to the sequel of Dragon Plaque.

This is the last book of the series.
Full of advenchures, wonderful world building, evolving characters - and magic!

In this book we can see the beginning of a new dragon riders' era. Cora and Octavia have different missons, but both of them should be very brave to win.

I liked this book as much as I liked the whole series. If you are a fan of dragons, magic and unexpected events - this one is for you!.

A great conclusion to an exciting series. Cora and Alaric are a great partnership and trying to stop Onyx and rescue Alarics mum. It’s great to have another point of a view with Octavia who is trying to do the same thing.

Cora’s leading the rebel army against Onyx. Dragon training, fighting, romance, battles and trying to stop an evil king. An exciting, fast paced and excellent dragon adventure. Great world building and characters.

such a good read UNTIL!!!

Her fantasy dragon books for young adults have up until this point been wonderfully entertaining! However, when you get to the last couple of Chapters in a good read, WHY would you create lesbian characters? The Princess and Strida were great stand alone characters. Making that decision in these books will mean I cannot, will not ever recommend these books for children! This world has enough problems without good authors starting to just go with the flow!
I will no longer read your books and will inform others of this new decision.

Thank you to Booksprout and Ava for the ARC. These are my thoughts:
1. So much character growth
2. What a way to wrap things up, you learn so much in this book.
3. I loved that you still got to see from multiple points of view.
4. The way that the characters knew when they were wrong and didn't shy away from it yet used it to grow instead of doing the same thing over or justifying themselves was refreshing.

this was a great entry in the Rise of the Dragon Riders series, it had what I expected from Ava Richardson. It had what I enjoyed from other books by the same author. The characters worked well in this universe and I was invested in what was going on with them. I was a great entry and I look forward to more.

Excellant ending to the series. Cora and Alaric will finally have their chance to end Onyx's rein over the Tenegardians. This book has Cora training dragon riders in preparation for war, mending fences with Tamsin, finding a person to love and finally finding what she has a passion for. I loved reading this series of books.

Enjoyable Read

I really enjoyed the fact that, unlike a lot of reads in this category at the moment, there are actually triumphs one can look forward to. It seems like everyone really likes to Build You Up just to knock you down over and over and over and then I just don't even want to read the book anymore because I want someone to win finally. It's enjoyable to see someone win and know there are more books after this and it makes me curious to know what will be next.

What has happened to fantasy?

The good fantasy, the classics, had storylines that did not rely on romantic relationships to snare readers. I have no interest in reading about girls falling in love with each other. I stopped at that point. Jeff Wheeler and his books are the closest in quality to classic fantasy I have found. I would not recommend this book or series.
