This is book three of the Rise of the Dragon Riders and the main character is young dragon rider Cora and her dragon Alaric, who became bonded after she learnt a few of the symbols of Dragon Tongue her Gran Livi had shown her in the caves above her small village of Barcroft, in Tenegard. She managed to rescue her falsely imprisoned father, who was sentenced to forced labour in the fortress of Llys, but they had missed saving Alaric’s mother by just a day. King Onyx had come back to the fortress, picking up his ward Octavia and others, bringing his mother with him, not knowing that he will soon be betrayed by someone very close to him! His soothsayer has already told him of her visions of his death and he has done all he can to destroy all the former dragon riders and their dragons, leaving the population of Tenegard under a spell for decades, to make them disbelieve their own history as Fairytales and to hate and fear dragons, as being wild, destructive beasts. Cora. Alaric and a few key rebels lead them to the rebel stronghold, where the wild dragons agreed to work with the humans and see if any could bond with them. Cora needs to train others as dragon riders if they are to have any chance of stopping the king’s plans for war against his former country and using the poor people of Tenegard as his pawns.
Octavia has begun to realise exactly how evil the king actually is and that what he has been doing is wrong. She has a plan to help someone she has become close to, but will be in danger trying to do so. King Onyx has been using dragon scales and his dark magic to make matters worse for the people of Tenegard and taking everything from the people of the country to supply his war efforts. Cora meets Strida, one of the dragon scale scavengers from her own village, only to hear that matters have gotten worse and people are being arrested for anything and conscripted into he king’s army against their will. There is a slow burn romance with Faron who has bonded with a dragon called Wyn and whom Cora has started to trust and become close to. The king is trying to find the location of the rebels, wanting to wipe them out before they can become powerful enough to stop him! His foreign magic can only do so much, but he has perverted the magic to his darkest desires and will be harder to take down than they can ever imagine. Cora tries to train the new dragon riders and the once wild dragons, but soon finds herself questioning her own capabilities when she sees what else King Onyx has waiting for them. They must destroy the source of his power once Cora manages to figure out what it might be and do everything to stop the coming war. Octavia will have a key role to play, as she faces the very people that King Onyx wants to destroy, seeking a path to bring both sides together in peace, rather than war.
It will bring Cora, Alaric and the rest of the rebels, face to face with King Onyx and his army, with his dark soldiers and a new foe, bespelled to do as the king demands against their own will, same as with the enforced conscripts. His corruption and destruction has already spread wide and far, in his quest for vengeance against his own people’s rulers and his desire for immortality and power, he will do anything and use anyone to get what he wants, no matter the cost. If they cannot defeat him, then his corruption will reach far outside their own shores and there will be no hope left. Far too many people believe all of his lies, due to his dark magic keeping them in the dark for the whole of their lives. Cora and Alaric have progressed their bond and their magic, but are nowhere close to the confidence she will need, sooner rather than later. Thankfully she has the support and belief of the rebels and even their leaders, whilst also making concessions on a recent breakdown of trust with Tamsin, which will lead them to a possible tool to use against the king and bring down his evil plans once and for all. Only they do not have as much time as they hoped and must change their plans on the fly to succeed. So much has happened to Cora and Alaric, and they are no longer alone, but their story hasn’t quite finished yet and I look forward to the next edition in the series.
