You know when you go to a deli and order a sandwich that sounds really good, but then you get the sandwich and they only put 1 thin piece of meat/cold-cut on it, and it's just not enough? That was this book. The book sounded really good in theory, and the premise was great, but the actual book just wasn't meaty enough.

This felt like an early draft. I liked the scion powers/types of supernatural characters because I felt like they really differed from most paranormal RH books that I've read. However, the character personalities were really cookie cutter. There wasn't enough relationship building, chemistry, or dialogue. The world-building was shaky at best. Sometimes characters contradicted themselves. Friendships felt forced and fake. There were also numerous obvious typos.

I may circle back for the next book because I did enjoy the premise, but I need the character chemistry and banter to improve. I think the FMC actually spoke like 5 sentences to other people throughout this entire book. It was otherwise just internal monologues and the male main characters' POVs.

This book, it had potential, but it never delivered. There were no real explanations for what things were or why (I felt like this was a spin off from another series I hadn’t read). The FMC was so monotone in her behaviour and thoughts, brief mention that she was going to be a tattoo artist but now at magic school - no explanation and she just didn’t react, at all.

The MMCs were as stereotypical as you can get, and again very one dimensional as characters. I didn’t know which was which at all. Plus, all but naked as a threesome before your first kiss? That was so odd to me. Who starts a relationship- and I mean, they hadn’t even talked, with a threesome with someone else you hardly know, go straight to naked WITHOUT kissing? It made no sense for me.

Eventually I gave up because l was so annoyed. I love academy books, love magic and shifters and demons. This was not a good version of any of them.

I was sent an ARC for review

Kitsune, Hellhound, Incubus...oh my!

Plot: Mara is invited to enroll at Wyldthorn Academy a college for Scions, by Nora and Lawrence an elf and a vampire working at the academy. As soon as she arrives she meets the four Seasons' Princes and is immediately attracted to them, and they have various feelings for her. She learns more about her own Lineage as a Kitsune and about the different Season's Courts. At the end of the month, it is a big deal for each student who isn't already in a season to choose one. There are things at play that only Nora seems to know and the Princes and Mara slowly begin to uncover them.

Thoughts: I really liked how Shear didn't stick with typical romance fantasy creatures. There are vampires and elves, incubus and shifters, but there are also Norse descendants, Hellhounds, Ferrymen (Greek descendants from Charon), Hydra, Nephilim, and of course Kitsune! I enjoyed the different aspects of the Seasons, how they each reflected certain traits but not ones that would necessarily be obvious but makes sense when you think about it. I also enjoyed how Mara didn't fall head over heels for the Princes, she was attracted and intrigued but also when felt unwanted was like "ok, that's fine I got other things to deal with" and didn't wallow in a pity party. All the characters seem normal too, they have normal reactions to events, not blind acceptance or refusal. There is curiosity amongst the Princes because of Nora and there is a bit of disbelief and doubt from Mara, because she assumed she wasn't a Scion, but knows it's a possibility.
I thought it was going to be predictable but there were pleasant surprises in the story that make it it's own.
The spicy scenes at first seemed a bit rushed to me like they are throwing it in just because it needs to be there, but that isn't quite right. They do make sense and are appropriate to the story and the speed of the plot.
The way Shear wrote the scenes with Mara in her shifted form was beautiful, I could picture the Kitsune running through the woods and the joy and beauty of the moment, definitely my favorite parts.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered and puzzles to sort out. This is a great start to a series I think is going to be amazing! I can't wait for what comes next!

I was provided an ARC of this book to read and review. There were some issues with editing (typos etc) that I hope will be resolved before final release. The story was very engaging and overall the pacing and writing were good.

Mara is invited to attend a school for people with unique attributes. She learns she is a Kitsune, and at Wyldthorn Academy she will learn about the world of the Scions and train to wield her powers. Her first big challenge: choose a Season. Each student chooses a Season to form a pact with. The four Princes of each season meet with her on her first night, and to say they are hot is an understatement. While Mara struggles to decide on a Season and to shift to her Kitsune form, she is tempted by all the Princes offer her. This book was much *spicier* than I usually read but the spice is well written.

What. Did. I. Just. Read. The worst thing about this book, is that you know the first few chapters of book 2 are going to amazing by the way book 1 ended. But it’s not out yet. Now we have to wait. Plus, we know Tiernan’s book will be exquisite, I didn’t miss that foreshadowing! Torture much?

Did I stay up all night on a weekday reading? Yes I did! Wow! Just wow! LK Shear…. You have a new stalker, I meant follower. I’m absolutely in love with the world she created and the Princes! Well… one of them can grovel. (Read this book and you’ll know what I mean). If this is her debut, I can’t wait for future series! True gem. It had the perfect combo of plot, spice and kink. Chefs kiss.

Spice level (1-5): 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Kink level (1-3): ⛓️ ⛓️ (praise, primal, ménage, rope bunny, D/s)

Mara, a rare Kitsune Scion, gets invited to attend Wyldthorn Academy. Being a late bloomer to her Scion abilities, she is significantly behind her peers. Now she has to pick a seasonal court to join. All led by a Prince: Tiernan, Prince of Spring Court (No relations to tampon), Dorian, Prince of Autumn Court, Dominic, Prince of Summer Court and Forrest, Prince of Winter Court. All hot, all different personalities, and all different Scions with different abilities. How is a girl supposed to decide when all 4 Princes either like to make her blush or potentially want to murder her? Not to mention picking a court will influence your future. Switching courts down the road is an unlikely option. At least the Princes are a hot distraction, but there are no guarantees that she won’t get burned.

I’d recommend A Touch of Winter to everyone if I could. But this book is not for everyone. Read the Trigger Warnings! If you’re down with some MM action, ménage, praise kink, dirty talk, back door smex, primal play, outdoor smex, demons, incubi, mythical creatures, with plot, you’ll love this book! If any of the above offends you, you should pass. For all the hoes out there that like plot and suspense, this one’s for you.

Warning: Reading this book may make you forget about sleep. May make you kiss hot guys hoping they are your fated mate. May make you run in the woods in hopes that an incubus will chase you. May make you talk to trees. May make you love four guys. Scratch that, three guys. Read responsibly.

exceptional 10/10

This was hands down the best why choose PNR fantasy book I’ve read. It has ACOTAR vibes but the writing is so good it stands out on its own. I honestly feel the need to reread it already to soak in the amazingness.

The FMC is soft but strong, she’s been thrown into a world of scion she knew nothing about but she soon discovers her inner power and it is dazzling. The characters are well written so you feel pulled in from the first moment you meet them and each guy has a very distinct personality.

I’m crap at reviews but good at recs. Just trust me and read this book immediately. You can thank me later.

This just isn’t for me. The writing and characters aren’t strong enough, though the ideas were interesting to me. I liked the concept of choosing a Season, it reminded me of Zodiac Academy but somehow not as good.

Mara plans included becoming a tattoo artist at the shop she is an apprentice at and not attending college at all...especially a college for the scions. Her Mothers lineage never appeared when she was younger so she never bother finding out about it. Until a visit from Nora and Lawrence ...Nora is a powerful sweet Elf and her husband a grumpy Vampire that work at the Wyldthorn Academy pays a visit. Once she arrives she is escorted to the cafe that Nora and Lawrence owns at the academy where she's introduced to the Seasons Prince's (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter) each get to tell her about court (Season houses). Tiernan, Dorian, Forest, & Dominic are the season princes who have set their sights on the new arrival. Mara knows she is a Kitsune, but doesn't know how to shift or what type she is. The more Mara is around the princes things start to happen and everyone is taken by surprise. Plus there is that pesky prophecy that is pushing fates hand.

OMG this is a very magical adult fantasy romance that has you very much enthralled from the beginning to the end. This is a one sitting type of read and that's how good it is! There is magic at every turn and mystical creatures from succubus to hydra's all in this world. Dorian and Dominic are chief kiss steaming HAWT off the charts makes me want a damn hellhound. Each prince was sexy, complex, and a perfect mixture of magic. I can't wait for book two!

I would like to start by stating that “Touch Of Winter” is a MMFMM reverse harem paranormal romance. This read includes topics of MM scenes, as well as D/s, primal play, bondage, and other spicy scenes. If that’s not for you, that's ok, but I wanted to start off with this little disclaimer!

I found myself struggling to really get into this book. Personally, I felt like I was waiting for a ball to drop, and it never did. This book had so much potential, but the deliverance wasn’t there. I think the plot was serving me Harry Potter if they were college students and had an underlying sex appeal. I would also like to mention that sometimes things would be mentioned and that would be it. Like FMC wanted to be a tattoo artist, but was now at a magic college sooooo…? I will say the plot of being like mates was kinda interesting considering there were four princes.

Regardless of what was previously said, I probably would pick up the sequel because the writing was really good and I didn’t absolutely hate the plot.

Loved it on so many levels.

Touch of Winter was one of those unsuspecting books that start out slowly and before you know it you are so fully immersed and invested in the storyline and characters you cannot put the book down. This is an urban fantasy where the main character Mara has been raised away from the world, so readers gain knowledge and watch Mara’s delight as the paranormal world is revealed to her as she connects with her kitsune.

L.K. Shear slowly reveals tidbits of the main male characters, the four Season Princes, all of whom are fascinating in their own way, and I am so grateful that this is a #whychoose romance as I would have had difficulty picking only one. Touch of Winter is sensually written with a pair of the Prince’s having existing romantic bonds and a Dominant/submissive relationship. There are fated mates, enemies–to-lovers vibes, a yet undisclosed prophesy and one strong heroine who is determined to seize her heritage. This book way a brilliant read and after the way it finished, I cannot wait to get my hands on book two.

I received this book as an ARC and to say it was amazing would be an understatement. Not necessarily what I typically read but after Touch of Winter I do intend on revisiting the world Ms. Shear has created as often as she invites us.
The spice was *chefs kiss* sublime. Totally hot and wickedly good.
Mara is everything you'd want in a female lead, spunky and full of fire though not cocky.
And the Princes? *fans self* Only word that fits is WOW! I really like Forest and hope he gets his act together in book 2. And Dom... yeah that will definitely be interesting!
Rated 5 stars because it has everything, great and interesting plot that keeps you invested and a large cast of characters that are each unique and realistic (aside from the supernatural aspects lol).

This story isn't what I expected out of a fantasy novel. For one it isn't just vampires and wolves. These shifters are Hellhounds, Incubus, Elves, and a Kitsune. Seeing the different seasons and how they related to each of the princes was extremely fun. Each season have characteristics that helped guide them into the choice of the season that they wanted to be in. The college gives you a choice of which season would best fit you which I thought was cool because Mara seemed to have a hard time seeing what was always there inside of her.

Mara was fun to get to know. She was basically thrown into a world she wasn't completely are aware of and how to network it. Mara didn't give into the princes all at once which is hilarious to see how each of the four princes run with it.

Forest is the most annoying at the moment. He deserves a throat punch!! Other than that I love these men!!

This was a book that popped up on my Tik Tok and I decided to just go for it. I think the story could really go somewhere if done right and I want to keep reading but some parts of this book just were misses for me.

The storyline seems to drag a little in the middle and I kept asking myself "okay why do we need this?"

I think the pacing of mates has been good so far but of course I want more interaction with them. I feel like sometimes we throw fated mates in and all the getting to know each other lovey moments I love in a romance go out the window.

Will be reading on hoping this speeds up.

Oh this was a fantastic start to this series. The world building is really good and has a fresh take on fantasy characters and loved the Greek mythology references too. Mara is a likeable female lead and I really enjoyed her interactions with the princes too. This was such an easy enjoyable read and I finished it rather quickly as I was so eager to know more. There are still many questions I need answering which I’m sure book 2 will deliver. Loved it. Mind the trigger warnings though

Wow. Is this what a book hangover feels like? Because im struggling to form words to write this review. This mmfmm paranormal romance left me diving for the second book needing to know what comes next. There is alot to take in with this book with having five MC's, there abilities, i felt a lot like Mara trying to drink in all the new information when she found out what scion she was.

Im diving into book two (Stirrings Spring) right now!

The premise for this was really promising however the execution could’ve improved.
This definitely would’ve benefited from another edit and proofread. Maybe even another check over the format of it as sometimes there was an extra line at the end of the page and sometimes said end line just kind of ended on the middle of the page even though it wasn’t the end of the paragraph, it was literally a continuous sentence.

The only other stories I can sort of compare this to would be a shorter and more condensed version of Zodiac Academy (if it was why choose). The characters are in a college setting, the fmc is basically new to the world of magic/shifters (scions?). I still don’t really know what a magic pact is but that’s thrown around in the book a bit. It also gave me Divergent vibes and instead of factions, this book has Seasons. Each Season has a certain set list of characteristics for the people who are part of that court. It was a little bit frustrating reading about them as it kind of felt like we were trying to shove people in these boxes, and I hope in future books this gets abolished.

Due to the short nature of this book, it was hard to connect with any of the characters in a deeper way. It all felt very surface level. The chemistry and banter were sort of non-existent and when it did show up, it felt out of place because I didn’t know enough about the characters to feel as if that was something they would say or do.

Overall, the vibes were there and the bones of the story were strong. Hoping to see more character development in further books.

*SPOILERS BELOW*

I am sorta confused about some things tho like… The first book is called ‘A Touch Of Winter’ which made sense to me when Forrest (the Winter Prince) mated with her first. So it would only make sense that each book equals a new mate right??? So why does she mate with Dorian (the Autumn Prince) at the end of this book, but book 2 is called ‘The Stirrings of Spring’?

Another thing, as much as I liked the prologue in how it was setting up for why the fmc was there and what he relationship was going to be with the 4 princes, I feel like the story would’ve benefited from it perhaps at the start of book 2 instead? There was a certain tone the prologue had set for me and when the rest of the book didn’t meet that, I was slightly disappointed.

With the different Seasons as well, I was disappointed that the fmc ended up choosing a season. Especially because it was mentioned a few times that you don’t have to choose, you can just be courtless. However, every time the courtless were mentioned, the fmc would always say how depressed and lonely they were. Call this a pet peeve, but this gave me such bad vibes. It’s basically insinuating that if you don’t follow the societal norms/laws, you’re going to be a loner and depressed until you conform. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but like… idk… sounded like an unnecessary connection to add into the story.

One girl, one Academy, four Princes. Also, the drama and excitement that comes with the fated mates trope.

Touch of Winter by L.K. Shear is an exciting opening to the Wyldthorn Academy series.

Following Mara – a Kitsune Scion – who is convinced to join a magic school for fellow Scions, we are introduced to a fantastical world full of drama and excitement. For the most part, I like Mara. I enjoy her passion for art – as depicted through her love of tattooing – and her headstrong attitude towards adjusting to her new life at Wyldthorn Academy. Oftentimes, I find her to be too naive and I wonder whether that is a result of not being accustomed to being around other Scions.

We are quickly introduced to the Princes of each season: Tiernan (Spring Court), Dorian (Autumn Court), Dominic (Summer Court) and Forrest (Winter Court). Unsurprisingly, Mara finds all four attractive, and Shear does a great job of establishing each Prince's different personality which eventually lends itself to major plotlines further in the book.

I love the inclusion of the different creatures that are commonly found in fantasy fiction such as vampires, elves, demons, etc. It really helped to ground the reader in familiarity. There were also creatures that had been taken from Norse elements which don't often find their way into modern fiction, which helps make the book stand out, in my opinion.

Pacing-wise, I found it great as it felt like Mara wasn't rushed into making big decisions too early, she was able to settle in and begin exploring potential relationships with the four Princes and the other secondary characters. My only gripe in regards to pace was how fast the smut scenes came across to me, I understand why the particular scene with Mara, Tiernan and Forrest needed to happen but it felt like it came out of left field, and could have been expanded upon beforehand, however I did enjoy the events that followed.

Although I gave four stars, I did find the plot to be predictable at times, but I guess that's just natural with how popular the romantasy genre is these days – and I consume a lot of it!

I've already made a start on the second instalment of Wyldthorn Academy and I look forward to seeing Mara's story progress.

Welcome to Wyldthorn Academy, where the changing seasons are more than just weather phenomena—they're powerful beings with intense personalities. In the mystical world of Scions, Mara, a Kitsune Scion, grapples with the unknown while navigating the attention of the Princes of the Seasons. Winter Forrest, Spring Tiernan, Summer Dominic, and Fall Dorian are the embodiment of the seasons, each bringing their unique strengths and challenges to the academy. The Elf Queen's fate intertwines with Mara's as they tread a path fraught with danger and desire. "Touch of Winter" is a MMFMM reverse harem paranormal romance set in a college for Scions. Expect MM scenes, D/s dynamics, primal play, bondage, and other spicy encounters.

- **Tropes**: Enemies to lovers, age gap, forbidden romance, secret keeping, why choose, academy setting

🌟🌟🌟

"Touch of Winter: Wyldthorn Academy Book 1" by L.K. Shear is a steamy, captivating journey into a world where magic and seasons intertwine. From the start, the book dives into intense MM action, setting the stage for a compelling why-choose or RH (reverse harem) romance. While the fantasy academy setting feels familiar, Shear's characters stand out with their unique seasonal personas.

However, a recurring trope that dampened my enthusiasm was the bet among the male characters to seduce the FMC (female main character) as a game. Even though it's clear they'll eventually develop genuine feelings for her, this approach is off-putting and detracts from the emotional depth of their relationships. The story maintains its steam and intrigue, but the 80% mark hints at an inevitable cliffhanger, leaving readers on edge for the next installment.

Overall, "Touch of Winter" is an engaging read with plenty of heat and a unique twist on the fantasy academy genre. Whether I'll continue with the series remains uncertain due to the cliffhanger ending.

Great Start and I’m interested in More

I honestly have to say that I think this book is worth the read. Now, it is short at only 206 pages so you really only get a small dive into the characters and story, but it seems to be a great foundation for the series. At the same time, you aren’t really given a lot of information on the academy she was asked to come to or why. You also aren’t really given a lot of information on what she is really or the history of this fae world. I’m assuming it will all come out in the next books, it just be aware that just reading the first one will leave you almost hanging.

Mara, the MFC, is asked to come to this academy. She wanted to become a tattoo artist but apparently fate has other ideas. At this academy, the student are divided into seasons or houses. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. (It really has some ZA vibes if I’m being honest.) And everyone here is also a different kind of creature like a Hellhound, Incubus, Shifter of some kind and more. All of the houses are lead by a Season Prince and in case you haven’t guessed it yet, they all want Mara and yes, this is a RH. There is also MM in this book, if you need to have this info. Two of the Princes, Summer and Autumn, are already bonded to each other but like to spice it up with an extra every now and then and they both want Mara. But so does the Spring Prince and even though he’s in denial, the Winter Prince does too.

As of now, I liked it and because this one ended on a cliff, I do plan to read the next and see if any information is answered and to see where the relationship dynamics go because this is spicy and hot and I’m just depraved enough to see how these underlying BDSM kinks.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book and feel like I got through it quickly.

Part of my star rating was that there were multiple typing and grammatical errors and this affected my reading experience.

A Touch of Winter is a paranormal, why choose romance. The main character, Mara, was likeable overall and the scene was set in typical school fashion with classes and the newcomer, making a friend etc.

I did find there were some things that were probably meant to be said much earlier and found out in a conversation - perhaps between Mara and Nora (e.g. finding out what Lineage Mara was) instead of just blurted out in a class scene. There were little things that made the story a bit jagged, but I did enjoy the the story overall and am onto the second book already.

Although Mara was quite likeable, I did find that the sexual tension was a bit forced, and the build up and meeting of all the characters was awkward instead of steamy and sexy. Perhaps this was the intended feeling. I feel like I didn’t get to know Mara and her feelings as well as I should and would probably have enjoyed a single POV in the first book with multiple POV in the later books. The boys were just horny alpha-holes with no real substance, and I do hope this changes. Mara came across as a young lady who just really wanted to have sex with all of them and that was her sole intention, apart from choosing her season.

I have faith that the author will continue to develop their writing and the story was engaging enough for me to continue.

Great start to a series

I really enjoyed this book. I found this book to be a simple story building on the foundation of the female lead characters relationships. Nothing felt super heavy unless I count the prophesy spoke twice. It have multiple point of views, but focused heavily on the female lead character. We got to know her and the guys. Seems that each book has her bonding with one of the guys. We got to know a bit about Winter in this one, Forrest is the prince of the season and by accident, bonded with our female lead character. I’m sad that there only 2 books out because I fell in love with this story. The female character was so relatable. Her confusion was understandable, and the guys making that bet seems like something many would do in real life. I think it’s going to bite them in the ass when she finds out. She’s gonna be so pissed, but in reality, she can sleep with whoever she wants, she’s an adult and she can stick up her herself so it will be interesting when the truth comes out. I had wondered when the prophesy would start, and it snuck in out of no where. Poor Forrest was the first of her mates to be affected. I’m thinking one by one, each book she’s gonna bond one and they will then fall victim to the curse. She will figure it out though, she’s smart. Can’t wait for the next book!

What an ending!!!! Waiting for the next book in the series is gonna be next to impossible! I absolutely love the mixing of different cultures and their mythologies when it comes to what types of Scions there are. The princes are definitely walking sin and I can’t wait for Forrest and Dominic to get over themselves and join the fun!

This fated mates why choose is just amazing. The first book of this series sprinkles in upcoming chaos but I love that it’s multiple POVs and focuses more on the relationship building between the FMC and the MMCs. Mara grew up knowing little to nothing about her lineage until Nora and Lawrence came to recruit her to the academy they work at. After meeting the four prices of the seasons, Tiernan(Spring), Dorian(Autumn), Dominic(Summer), and Forrest(Winter) she’s thrown head first into trying to learn about the Scions, her lineage as a kitsune, and has to decide which seasonal court she will join. All the while the princes place a bet as to who can get her first. After one encounter she accidentally finds she’s mated to Forrest and curiosity gets the better of Dorian after a very spicy session in the forest where we are left with the ending of finding out they are also mated.

I absolutely couldn't put this book down—it was such a read! The presence of Kitsune, the world of Hellhound and the allure of an Incubus made it incredibly enticing. The story beautifully combines these elements and I was completely absorbed in every aspect. The pacing and writing are just right making it an overall fantastic reading experience.

"Touch of Winter" takes you on a journey that sneaks up on you starting slowly but eventually immersing you in its gripping storyline and crafted characters. Dorian, the character stands out as a personal favorite; his unique charm and sexyness adds so much to the narrative. The investment in both the characters and the plot becomes so deep that it's impossible to put the book down.

To sum it up this book is a gem with a perfect balance of fantasy elements captivating storytelling and well developed characters. If you're looking for a read that seamlessly blends elements, with an immersive storyline, "Touch of Winter" is definitely worth considering.
