Overworked, and underappreciated, Eric Marcelino just wants to hunt the vampires plaguing Ironport, keep his students out of the field, and somehow make it home in enough time to get a full 8 hours of sleep. . . maybe 6.
Tony McMahon and his sister arrive in Ironport looking for a fresh start. Only Tony didn’t count on the instant attraction he feels toward the Huntsman’s golden boy, Eric, nor being drawn into an ancient prophecy set to end the Huntsman forever.
Something strange is brewing in Ironport. With bloodsuckers, the Council of Creatures, and his students breathing down his neck, Eric has to wonder if he’s in over his head and if a potential boyfriend might be the final nail in his coffin. This is gonna suck.
Born and raised in a small town near the Chesapeake Bay, Lou Wilham grew up on a steady diet of fiction, arts and crafts, and Old Bay. After years of absorbing everything, there was to absorb of fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi she's left with a serious writing/drawing habit that just won't quit. These days, she spends much of her time writing, drawing, and chasing a very short Basset Hound named Sherlock.
When not, daydreaming up new characters to write and draw she can be found crocheting, making cute bookmarks, and binge-watching whatever happens to catch her eye.
Overkill was a fast-paced book that kept me captivated. I always wanted to know what happened next, and I was never disappointed. I enjoyed it so much that I finished it in about a week.
Overkill has everything from vampire hunting to mystery, romance, twists and turns, and pristine descriptions. There are even some pop culture references sure to give the reader a chuckle or a smile. With different POVs from the two main characters and even a third POV sprinkled in, you really come to understand the motivations, longings, and raw emotions of the individuals ranging from Venators (vampire hunters) to witches to humans. Secondary and tertiary characters are described so well that you are able to root for them.
In essence: I highly recommend Overkill. As someone who loves supernatural lore, I found the vampires and witches to be polished, each with unique touches that set them apart from other mediums involving the same species.
I was lucky enough to snag an advance copy of Overkill by Lou Wilham. This is the first book in the Hunters of Ironport series, interconnected with the Witches of Moondale series. Wilham is a new author to me, though I’ve seen her work in the author-sphere for some time. She does not disappoint! Eric Marcelino is Venator–a protector of humanity whose genes are activated when vampires come to town. Despite his tight-knit group of trainees, witches, and healers, it's a lonely job, and a bloody one. But then he learns that a new crop of vamps is not only visiting Ironport but being sired there. With the Council of Creatures mired in bureaucracy, Eric must trust a new Venator–the sarcastic and way-too-attractive Tony McMahon.
Overkill takes the world set up in the Witches series and runs with it. Though this is my first taste of Moondale and Ironport, I was never lost, and enjoyed the callbacks to previous story arcs–I plan to go back and read Lou’s Moondale series as well. The romance between Eric and Tony is complicated, but sweet and honest. I was thrilled to see Wilham did her diligence with Tony’s backstory as a trans man, and can’t wait to see more of him. Filled with action, longing, and found family facing the Big Bad, Overkill gave all the feels of watching Buffy for the first time, but now with characters like me! I adored this world and story and was almost late for work one day because I couldn’t tear myself away. The imperfect, authentic characters of Overkill sink their teeth into you and refuse to let go.
Recommended for urban fantasy fans who want to sink their teeth into a new world. 5 out of 5 stars.
I'm so glad I returned to the Bay of the Dead universe with Overkill. I'm already a big fan of the Witches of Moondale series, so this was a natural next read for me - the author even included references to the characters and plot in the other series for us returning readers. Always love a good name drop or easter egg!
On to the book itself - Overkill is all about the vampire hunters of Ironport and their little vampire hunter school. This all sounds nice and idyllic but it doesn't stay that way for long. Trouble brews when an underground gang of local vampires starts to become more active and it's on resident vampire hunter Eric and the new arrival Tony to figure it out.
Obviously the LQBTQ+ representation is top notch, like everything Lou Wilham writes. The romance is much spicier in here than Witches of Moondale though, so expect some open door scenes. The mysteries and action are also a big highlight of this one, and one of the reasons I'm a big fan of Lou's books. You get that masterfully crafted sense of unease and danger every time the plot advances and it keeps you glued to the pages whenever something big happens.
I don't yet feel as emotionally attached to Eric & Tony as I do with Moondale witches but I'm absolutely getting there. That sequel will probably win me over considering the massive cliffhanger we were set up with!
✨ Disclaimer ✨ I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest review.
"And where the fuck are all the vampires, anyway?" 🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸 My sentiments exactly, this book was 96% vampire hunters and their complicated relationships and 4% vampires, I know I know, it's called HUNTERS of Ironport, but stii I needed more vampire action. We did get some more by the end, but there was a sad death so it felt bad to be excited for vamp appearances by that time. Despite most of the book being too steamy and horny, it's full of snarky and sometimes pick-up lines with a little bit of bad timing, such as this one: "Did it hurt when you fell from the vending machine? ...Cause you look like a snack.” I loved some of the characters more than others, especially as we got to know more about them. This is a series that is kind of a spinoff from the Moondale witches(which I loved way more) and I was promised that all these queer relationships will sprout into a Pan one, so I'm here for it! These vampire hunters come with trauma and it piles up throughout the whole book, they keep dealing with everything bravely, together with friends, and with jokes, jokes are their medicinal thing for dealing with all of it. My digital library doesn't seem to have the sequel, so I'll be waiting for it's appearance to continue reading, because the story ends on the road and I need to see where they go and what else they'll do to the vamps and to eachother. "Hunting vampires fucking sucked - pun not intended." Really excited to bite into the next book!
"A Venator’s destiny was predetermined."⠀ ⠀ Lou Wilham, OverKill⠀ ⠀ ⠀ I just finished Overkill by Lou Wilham and it was phenomenal! The book is set in Ironport in The Bay of the Dead 'verse, which is the same as The Witches of Moondale series. I adore crossovers so I really loved the little references to Rus and her tracker. ⠀ ⠀ Overkill follows vampire hunters Eric and Tony as they try to uncover the cause of an influx of vampire activity unlike anything Ironport has seen before. ⠀ ⠀ Eric is the quintessential reluctant chosen one who has carried the burden or being the areas only Venator for many years. He teaches at Moondale University and is instantly likeable as his affection for his students and friends shows through his protection and care. ⠀ ⠀ Tony is a "stab now, question later" vampire slayer who came to town when his little sister's Venator genes activated. He's got the hots for teacher and isn't afraid to go all out to secure as many dates as possible. ⠀ ⠀ Between the fighting, flirting, and *ahem* "dating" this duo draws the reader in with quick-witted quips and action packed detective work. The found family, reluctant hero, and "touch him and die" vibes are perfectly done and Overkill delivers on it's promise of a vampy story to rival the bite and banter of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
3 and a half stars In short I enjoyed the book but the ending seemed rushed and there are a lot of questions unanswered. Interesting take on a hunter/vampire world and I’m looking forward to the next one as well as further development of the characters.
Spoilers (Extended review)
The ending seemed quite rushed. Why did no one question what Dash was doing there. It’s already been established that he’s the mayors brother so why did she not report him missing. Pretty odd she wasn’t contacted either when he was found. Or that no one from the counsel was contacted. It has been established that they’re quite absent besides the mayor but it’s a pretty big deal if the wards of Moondale have failed. It just seems like more questions should have been asked. Especially by Eric and Lu. Her brother was taken and now suddenly has a very different personality after only a week. After having played caretaker to Eric after he was stabbed it seems like they would know something wasn’t right. Maybe more questions will be answered in the next book. Also does the ending indicate romance between Hunter and Eric. Although his wife just died. What’s up with Finn? Will Tony remember and come back to Eric? Is there even a relationship to be had after everything? Will the “kids” finally get some vampire fighting action? Needless to say I’m very eager for the next book.

This book was recommended to me by my assistant, who has been trying to stretch my boundaries. At heart, it is a love story between the bisexual Eric and the transgender Tony. Supported by a cast which spans the LGBTQ universe, our heroes set out daily to eliminate vampires wherever they are found. The world created by Lou Wilham is a new take on vampires where the most of the evil creatures are closer to zombies in their intelligence and drive. There are a few much older beings who appear near the end of the book but remain mysterious. The story is engaging. I found it compelling and finished the book quite quickly. The plot twists and turns with all of the misunderstandings and poor communications of any good love story, while underneath a vampire crisis is steadily building. The climax near the end of the book is dramatic and has an unexpected twist. The book ends with a new steady state, albeit an unsatisfactory one for both the characters and the reader. Bring on Book 2! The few sexual encounters in the book occur mainly behind closed doors. The one graphic scene of oral sex is handled with sensitivity. Readers will enjoy this book. They may even gain some new understanding of another part of our world, as I certainly did. Overall, a recommended read for anyone over the age of 16.
Eric, Marcelino, the oldest living "Vampire hunter" (which in his world is called a Venator) in Ironport and the professor on the topic at nearby Moondale U.
Mechanic Tony McMahon, new to Ironport, and a Venator in their own right, moved there to protect his sister/ guardian from their family. Lu has just become a Venator in her own right but has a lot to learn. Tony hopes Eric's program will help Lu understand.
Question is, can Eric and Tony deal with their attraction to each other? Could a romance affect their Venator abilities? And just why are there local vampire nests in Ironport all of the sudden?
In this first in the series, we establish the who what where when and how all wrapped in a rather brooding tale of how(not) to fall in love in a time of emotional and actual conflicts. Eric and Tony beat Buffy the vampire slayer all to heck even if Buffy was in more believable reality. Lou Wilham is at their best here with handling dark fantasy: a major reason why I return again and again to these stories...that ..and the cliffhanger ending of this story. Highly Recommended 5/5

There's a lot to love about Overkill. It's fast paced and the worldbuilding feels deeply considered, while avoiding infodumps. The characters have a complex web of interactions with interconnected paths that make the world feel lived in. The ending leaves for an exciting WTF moment to lead into book 2.
Unfortunately, I didn't particularly vibe with any of the characters. I found Tony obnoxious and Eric bland. The reader is expected to take a lot of what Eric is capable of on faith. He's supposedly the best at vampire killing, yet Tony is constantly rushing into rescue him. If he's this supreme badass, I want to see him being as unbeatable as the book claims he is. To me, Tony, Eric, and really all the cast weren't distinctive enough in terms of voice. It had a bit of Marvel movie feel. Constant quips and ribbing, but all of them sounding a lot alike. If you like that Marvel vibe, it might be perfect for you.

Quotes That Made Me Laugh: This is the Mystery Machine to the Scooby Gang. “Yeah I guess I’m into MILFs in F***-me jeans.” “Did it hurt when you fell from the vending machine?-Cause you look like a snack.”
Thank you to BookSirens for an ARC. This is the third book that I have read by Lou Wilham and I keep enjoying them more and more. This book is a spinoff of the Witches in Moondale series, and it is a little heavier than that series... a little less cozy. Lou probably writes some of my favorite found family- it is just so well done and I love it. This book follows Tony and Eric who are both Venators which are vampire hunters that have a mutation to help them hunt vampires better. When Tony and his sister move to Ironport, the vampire activity has changed. Tony knows who Eric is- since he’s a little bit of a celebrity when it comes to Ventators. Tony is a flirty character who does whats best for the people he cares about. Eric puts himself last and is a stand in parent of the students that he teaches at Moondale U. This book made me cry at the end, and the plot twist and ending have me not so patiently waiting for book 2. CHECK CW
***Thank you to Book Sirens for an ARC for this book. Though I received a free copy, all opinions are my own***
✰3.5-4/5✰ Overall I enjoyed this one! Not often I read a hunter/hunter romance in my paranormal stories, but this one worked! The MCs have their trauma and past they're dealing with and I felt it balanced with the present in the story.
There's quite a bit of cursing, but not overly so. It's probably no more than I, myself, use on the daily (inner monologue and aloud, lol). Also, the queer is strong with this one! It's uncommon I find a paranormal/horror story with a trans-MC, and I loved him!
The pacing was pretty good, though current/past relations felt a little messy. Can't delve deeper than that without spoilers though. This is more of a personal taste for me of course.
I'm looking forward to the 2nd in the series and can't wait to see what happens with Tony and Eric!
Thank you Booksirens and the author for the arc of this book. This review contains my honest opinions and are left voluntarily.
I loved everything about this book until the end. The characters were well thought out. Tony is brash, in your face, and kinda sunshiney. Eric is grumpy, reluctant, and incredibly loving. All the side characters are interesting and make you fall in love with them. The kids are fun and protective.
The story itself is captivating and drew me in right away. The magic system and monsters are similar but not clones of other stories. The relationship building between Tony and Eric pushes the story along.
Now to discuss the piece that brings down my star rating to 4 from 5. The ending felt rushed when compared to the rest of the story. There are zero questions asked about things that are going on. Hunter and Finn are causing quite a few questions to come to mind with no answers yet. It makes me want to read the next one soon.
*I got this book for free, but this opinion is my own.*
This was a good read. I loved the tension, but I have to say the ending felt rushed.
First of all, the characters were awesome. I found them really inspiring. It was when they reacted to conflict that they lost me. I mean, it's made abundantly clear that they're trained vampire hunters. Near the end, I thought they may have reacted a bit like they were new.
And though I was unaware of their goals, I loved how protective they were of the kids.
The strength of the vampires were in question because they knew that they needed both the main characters for the dreaded curse (which was a poor twist, since I could guess it before it was even relevant), and they only captured one.
It just felt like a reason to get to the rushed ending.
Side note. It's clear that this author is talented. The way tension is written is superb. I would definitely check out the next book.

i received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
i will update this and make it pretty when i have more time. but for now have this:
this was a very interesting story. while i did enjoy it i also felt it was very YA/middle school style to me. however that doesnt mean it was bad. there were a lot of elements that i loved. i loved Tony’s character. he was sassy and funny and very charismatic and i really wanted to learn more from him. and his banter with Eric? i love a good banter. and this is a very friends to lovers to friends to enemies which was a wild ride. plus i always love a good vampire story. i thought the way the author portrayed the vampires in this story was a cliche but how they died was an interesting touch and i would have never thought of it. overall this was a good story and im interested in what happens next.
I am a big fan of the Witches of Moondale series so I had to check this book out. A new series set in the same universe but about vampire hunters….yes please! I loved Overkill right from the start - it’s action packed, fast paced and very sexy in places.
Eric looks after the young vampire hunters he is training and has the whole world seemingly on his shoulders. Is the new Venetor, Tony going to help or hinder him? Eric and Tony are a great couple - they have fantastic chemistry and they absolutely sizzle on the page. But the course of true love never runs smoothly and the end of this novel made me shout ‘what!?’ in a good way of course. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.
pretty good. the characters are distinct - Tony is flirty and bold and brave, Eric is caring and a bit lonely and worn down. love the found family trope; Eric's students are quite endearing. there's a decent storyline, even if the villains are (intentionally?) obvious from the start. the plot is definitely unfinished though, and there's a cliffhanger-ish ending.
the Venator and Huntsmen setting is unique and interesting, although i'm still rather confused about the purpose/identity of the Huntsmen. are they people who know of the supernaturals? are they the supernaturals? and each action scene honestly feels a bit repetitive - vampires ambush Eric & Co., someone gets injured, passes out, Britt heals them.
but honestly the vibes are there, i want to know more, and i will definitely read the next book when it comes out without hesitation.
Gotta love a solid, fastpaced, thoroughly entertaining urban fantasy read!
Overkill is a fun series opener that comes with a great premise, a cast of diverse and well developed characters, and an equally well developed world, as well as an actionpacked plot that hooked me from the start and threw a few unexpected twists into the mix.
Absolutely LOVE having a trans MC in this one, though I must admit that I found Tony a bit annoying on the whole and wasn't overly enamoured of the romance between him and Eric. I am, however, very intriguing by how things will develop between them as well as in Ironport in general going forward after that gutpunch of an ending.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next book!

Great for fans of Buffy and the Dresden Files, an interesting twist on both Chosen One tropes and urban fantasy with institutionalized power systems.
Let me get this out of the way first: I'm 90% sure that this started life as a Steve/Billy Stranger Things fanfic. But more work has been done to make this text unique than you see in your average fanfic rebrand. (And I can only recognize it because I'm obviously a fan of fanfiction.) Once you get over the nagging feeling of familiarity, it's a fun, quick read with some nice queer representation. I'm seriously considering buying the sequel.

Overkill hit the ground running and had me on the edge of my seat until the last page! The perfect combination of nostalgic Angel vibes mixed with Lou Wilham’s unique The Bay of the Dead’verse!
🧛🏼♂️Vampires 🔍 Mystery 🖤 Romance 🫶 Found Family 🏳️🌈 Representation 🩸 Vampire Hunters 📖 Fast Paced 🥊 Action Packed 🤺 Rivals to Lovers
I absolutely devoured Overkill and I’m so excited to see The Bay of the Dead’verse expanding! I can’t wait to see what Lou Wilham has in store for us next!!
Thank you Lou Wilham & MBGBT for the advanced copy!
I loved the TV series, Buffy, as a teenager and was somewhat skeptical that this book would live up to it's promise. Tony and Eric work very hard to live up to that promise. A new author to me, I haven't read any of the Witches of Moondale. Going to need to remedy that.
Good pacing, very nice worldbuilding. Sexy main characters. I hate cliff hangers. Luckily it looks book 2 is only a few months away. Can't wait.

Buffy who? Eric and Tony are the vampire hunters you want to be reading about! Wilham has a way with words that completely immerses you in a fictional world. The characters are so relatable, diverse, and real, that it makes it so easy to fall into the storyline. And that storyline! It's exciting, creative, fast paced, and will leave you on the edge of your seat. This is one vampire book you do not want to miss out on, and I cannot wait for book two!
The plot here moves fast and breaks things, but in good and interesting ways. The lore is well-developed, the characters are interesting, there’s a nice balance between story, world building, and character development, and while there’s never a dull moment it also feels like there’s plenty of time to get to know the personalities caught up in all the action/intrigue/adventure. All in all, a compelling read.

Are you a fan of Buffy? Do you love representation? This book is for you! Expanding on the world built in the witches of moondale series, this series delves into the town next door where the land isn’t magic so creatures come to town. And a magical being all his own is tasked with protecting it. Are you intrigued?!? Give this one a go.
Trigger warning: violence, gore, descriptive sex scenes

Overkill by Lou Wilham was a fantastic read. It is the first book in the Hunters of Ironport series. This book is a captivating story with vampire hunting, mystery, magic, and romance.
I loved Lou Wilham's Witches of Moondale series and was excited to read more about Irondale and its magical systems. I loved the hunter-for-hunter aspect. It gave a unique twist to this paranormal romance. I loved the dynamic that Lou Wilham created between Eric and Tony. The story felt a bit young in places and confusing with the different elements of magic and hierarchy that I felt needed to be explained better, but I really enjoyed it overall. Also, that twist at the end and the cliffhanger is killing me, and I am excited to see where the story goes from here.
I loved it and need more. Fast-paced and full of interesting, diverse characters. Lots of banter, and laughs, and references in jokes I was glad to get. And when it was hot, it was hot 🥵 I need more of everything, and most importantly i need to know what's next!
I really enjoyed this book. I’m glad i got it signed by the amazing author that wrote it. will definitely be purchasing the second book and reading her other works. this book made me feel a million emotions so i can’t wait to read the second one.
