Giving Consent #2

Worth the Wait

Rate this book
Callum
I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m desperate for a boyfriend, but I wasn’t above signing up on an online app in hopes of finding a partner. I didn’t expect to meet someone so quickly, I didn’t expect him to live across the country, and I definitely didn’t expect him to want to be called Daddy. But I want more. I want commitment. I want closeness. I want whatever the thing between us is to be real, and I’m not convinced he can give that to me.

Jack
It’s been years since I cared enough to get involved with anyone seriously, so I’m caught off-guard after meeting Callum online. Smitten from the start, I am ready to give him anything and everything he needs, except the one thing he’s after most—proximity. All of that changes when I end up in Los Angeles, faced with the opportunity to make good on all the promises I’ve been sending him through text. The only question is will Callum wait while I get my act together or will he get tired of waiting for me?

Too much and not enough

I don't understand the propensity of some authors to go completely over the top in regards to sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, I love a good sex scene as much as the next person, but when you're reading one every chapter and never get to know the actual characters...well, I just begin sighing, rolling my eyes, and wishing for the ending.

Hawthorne definitely sacrificed character development to make room for all that sex, too. I read the entire thing, and do you know what I learned about Jack and Callum? Jack lives in New York, went to college with Landon and Verity, works as a physical therapist, and volunteers at an animal shelter. Callum lives in Los Angeles, works at a bar, had an abusive relationship with an ex...and that's about it. Other than their kinks, this is all we learn about these two. There's no talk of their other interests, their childhoods, their families, or their hopes and dreams for the future (other than "let's get married and have ALL the sex!" )

On top of not knowing the characters, there's no way to anticipate them. Their motives lack any definition, and their actions leave you scratching your head because even THEY don't know what they're doing or why.

The one good thing about this book is that it's free to read if you have KU. Even then, I wouldn't recommend it.

I thought that the long-distance relationship was doomed from the start, and I was right as the distance soon became an issue. It didn't take long for the things they both liked about the relationship, soon became the thing they hated. Since they were willing in the beginning to settle for this, I really didn't see much effort being put into it on either of their parts. Unexpected feelings occur and what started out online becomes something real, so Jack starts a move across the country. That in itself has its own complications. They have built the foundation of their relationship over the months that they spend communicating online, and 3,000 miles away. Now time has been added to the relationship issues. Jack and Callum find that there have been no changes to their work schedules, even though they are now within the same city...and it came as no surprise to me that Cullum's trust and insecurity issues that caused him to pursue this type of communication to start with, was a big glaring issue. Cullum is sweet...and Jack is patient, so it works out, but it was missing some of the heat that the first book had. Still a good read and I'll get book #3.

Worth the Wait is the second book in Kate Hawthorne’s Giving Consent series, a set of books revolving around a group of friends and the BDSM club, Rapture. This is an interestingly structured series in that the relationships are developing along a similar timeline, so while this is Callum and Jack’s story, we also see pieces of the growing relationships among the characters featured in books 3 and 4. In the same way, we learned about some elements of Callum and Jack’s relationship in the first book, Worth the Risk. So from a story perspective, you can read this as a standalone as everything we see in book 1 is covered here as well. But at the same time, I really liked how we had a peek at Jack and Callum in Worth the Risk, and even that we learned some big things about their relationship in that story (such as Jack’s hospitalization and move to LA). Learning about them there just got me all the more invested in this story, and I am finding myself anxiously awaiting reading the next two books to see those characters get their stories. Though we do get some repeated information, the book never felt repetitive with the exception of one scene in the hospital that we already saw. But that scene is the point where the two books connect, so I can understand why it was pivotal enough to show twice.

Read Jay’s review in its entirety here.

It’s okay....

It’s most likely just me, but this story was just okay for me. Nothing wow or exciting. In the end, I got board of all the steamy scenes. What I really wanted was more concrete story that what I read.

For a romance with this much kink, the love story is really sweet. Well. Really the sweetness makes since in Daddy Kink book where care taking is at the heart of the dynamic.

Callum is achingly lonely and it turns out so it Jack. They meet online and have a pretty intense connection until long distance just isn't enough for either hero.

We get some nice pansexual rep and delightful look at LA.

I like both heroes and the circle of friends. I wish we had much more back story on both of them to make this a really amazing book but it is a good read.

3.5 for Callum and Daddy Jacks story. There was a lot of sweetness to this book, an online romance that turned into a full on romance that included moving across the country, dealing with trauma and suddenly getting married. It felt somewhat rushed but I guess some love can’t wait ! For me, I couldn’t quite buy Jacks varying dominance and Callums insecurities that were at times annoying. The supporting characters were great.

Oh boy....I've been waiting for Daddy Jack since we got part of him in the first book....I love Daddy/Boy books and this one is just perfect....Firstly Jack and Callum meet online but soon that isn't enough and when they both meet for the first time well damn, we've already had that first meeting but these two are beyond hot together...I just can't get over how well they are suited....Callum has his insecurities but Jack tries his best to be there for his Kitten..(I love that nickname for him).....An amazing addition to the series.....But...It also broke me too.....There's hard times for Daddy and Kitten but I don't want to spoil anything...This is an absolute must read and I can't wait for the next one x

Daddy Jack

I'm biased here, I love daddy kink, especially good daddy kink. This is a softer touch than the first book in the series, but there is still spanking, caging, light pain play, very negotiation. There is assault and off scene rape of a future mc, the assault is not by an mc, nor is it graphically described.

Many books tie daddy kink with age play, this book is an exception that primarily focuses on Jack's need to take care of his partner. Their relationship starts long distance. Callum needs to protect himself from the the consequences of a previous abusive relationship. Jack is a workaholic who prefers casual. Long distance is casual, right? I really enjoyed the dynamic, and Kate Hawthorne's writing style and pacing.

Daddy Jack and Kitten (aka Callum) were SO WORTH THE WAIT. Oh my god. This is one of the books I have been most anticipating since meeting these characters in book 1, and I could not have loved this book any more. The relationship between Jack and Callum begins in a somewhat unusual way, and how it develops ends up taking both of them by surprise. This book is sexy and sweet, with some deeply emotional moments and one scene that had me holding my breath and my heart stuttering. I absolutely adore the connection between Daddy Jack and Callum and the way that, together, they learn how to navigate this deeper relationship neither of them expected. I love this group of friends and really want to get to know Verity, Aaron, Justin, Micah, and Keith more. If daddy kink is your thing, you definitely want to read this. And if you don't think it is? I dare you to try this book - it just might change your mind.

Kate Hawthorne is mean to my heart. Worth The Wait is a rollercoaster of emotion. I fell in love right from the beginning. Callum is so sweet and Jack is exactly what he needs. Neither one of them wants an in-person relationship so they figure that online is easy. And it is until feelings get in the way.

The Evil Word Magician amps up her evilness in this book. Even though I knew what was going to come because of book one, It was different reading the first-hand account. Callum's feelings brought tears to my eyes. I was upset and angry right along with him because Jack was being a little ridiculous. I understood where he was coming from, but he wasn't being far and I was mad he made me cry so early on.

Jack is caring, kind, and the perfect Daddy for Callum. He introduces him to what a sweet and loving Daddy/boy relationship. I love how patient he is with Callum, how gentle, even when things turn rough. He gives Callum what he wants and what he needs--even when Callum doesn't know what that is. He also has a dirty mouth that is hot. I highlighted almost every other word that came out of his mouth.

Callum is sweet and one of my favorite characters. He's been hurt before, but he learns to listen to his Daddy. Even if there are times where his insecurities make things difficult.

When they meet in real life things are perfect. Though Jack is afraid of moving too fast they make it work.

It's impossible to think that Kate Hawthorne could top herself, but she does. Even though the last book made me huffy, it was really good. Worth The Wait is, not better, but it's something more than Worth The Risk. Though maybe it's because one of the characters didn't drive me insane the way Landon did.

I was not happy with the Word Magician at one point. She is so mean to her characters. I was happy, they were happy, we all felt good. And then she went and broke them and I cried. My heart was broken in so many ways, and it's still not better. It won't be better until book three, and that's only after I cry all the tears again. She lived up to her name of Evil Word Magician when she wrote this book.

Daddy Jack and his Kitten are close to being my favorite Kate Hawthorne characters. Their love story starts long distance and it meant for just some fun and for Callum to learn what he likes and wants in that type of relationship. Even though figuring out how to work together in person wasn't easy they made it seem so. They loved each other, they knew that they knew that the other loved them. Despite the insecurities, the doubts, and what the Word Magician put them through, they were strong for and with each other. It was as close to a perfect love story as you can get.

This well-written book is well-woven with Book 1 in the series. In this book, we get more information about Jack, a friend of the group in NYC, and Callum, the bartender in a LA BDSM club. Callum has been hurt before, so he decides to explore the lifestyle by searching online for a Daddy. He connects with Jack and they agree to pursue the strictly online relationship. When their relationship becomes a perfect fit, they both think they want more, but they seem to have so many obstacles in the way, including the fact that they live on opposite coasts. Can they hope for more? This book is well-paced, has some danger, strong emotions, and a beautiful love.

Started Online, Ending in Cross Country Love!

What started as an online relationship in kink became the Callum & Jack love story. I’ve read other Kate Hawthorne books and I always feel ambivalent about my like or dislike of her stories. I liked and disliked Callum’s character, he was sweet but he was also too needy. I also thought the Jack angst seem manufactured and not authentic.
All in all, the book was readable and interesting. And l plan to continue my like/dislike with another Hawthorne Novel!

I really enjoyed the dynamic chemistry shared between Callum and Jack. This had more romantic moments than I expected and that was a very happy surprise. The love and respect and true friendship shared between the two men really resonated with me, and I ended up really loving these characters.

"You’re safe with me."

they start as a long distance relationship, meeting online with the intention of never seeing each other in person. and there is something sweet about them getting to know each other and making time to connect on different coasts.

"I bet you blushed."

i'm not usually a fan of daddy kink but this didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story. the friend group is still going strong and I really enjoy what glimpses we get from all of them.

“Why are you here?”
“Because it’s where you are.”

Absolute Leseempfehlung!

A story that was hinted at at the end of Worth the Risk and damn, it fulfilled all expectations.
Kate is fantastic at building these worlds that contain several characters that all have their own thing going on but overlapping with each others lives. This time we follow Jack, based in New York but his best friends are Landon and Verity (book one) who are over in California. Then there's Callum, bartender at Landon and Veriety's club, Rapture. Looking for someone to care for him, he turns his search online after a disastrous night. His first connection is with Daddy Jack and their connection is instant. Even just with online chat, calls and video chat, their relationship quickly develops to more than what they both thought possible. With several obstacles coming their way, they need to decide what it is they want and fight for it.
Wow! This book packs a punch and delivers on everything that it promises. After reading Worth the Risk you have a vague idea of Jack and Callum as characters but we dive so much deeper here and they are such wonderful men, you can't help but want them to have all the love and happiness. There's a great exploration between the two men whilst they carry on their relationship online. Being a Daddy but online online brings certain logistical problems but I think they overcame that very well! Some hot stuff to read as the two come together (lol!) We already know of Jack's friends but we also get to meet Callum's. Both sets being an important support system through everything that goes on in this book and their pasts. There's a lot of emotion that is experienced throughout the whole book. There are quite a few hot scenes between the two, several heartbreaking moments for both men and luckily a lot of happy moments to balance us out.
From the first chapter, you're drawn straight into the story of Callum and Jack. Needing to know their next conversation, how things will play out online and how they'll work things out to make it together.....
Cannot recommend this book and series enough. So looking forward to book 3!!
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Weirdest reason to dnf ever, the sepsis was really badly written.

Okay, hear me out. My mum has sepsis a few years back and she was a mess. Incoherent. It took her days on some pretty intense medication to just feel mildly okay again. I knew Jack was going to have sepsis in this book and I knew it was going to be a bit brushed aside because it happened as a side plot in the first book but, when we got there, it was very much, oh yeah, and then I had sepsis and nearly died, and here's the exact same scene from the first book. Literally no detail, no depth, no what it felt like, what he was thinking as he waited for the ambulance, doubled in pain. And it kind of made me reflect that all this book is, much more than the first, is a string of sex scenes. Like, honestly the first book suffered from it a bit too but it kind of worked with the dynamics of the characters. Here, where we're meant to have a daddy dom, I wanted more caretaking. Fine, he sends him a lot of sex toys, but I want to hear how he also sends him a warm blanket or a book he things he'll like or a shirt he thinks he'll look good in or a postcard he saw when he was out that made him think of him. They have video sex, cool, where are my check ins to make sure he's eating properly, isn't getting too stressed, is making sure to keep in touch with the other important people in his life. Some of its hinted at as a side to the sex but I know more about what his dick looks like than about anything in their relationship not to do with sex. Which, again, fine if you like it but not for me. Also, same narrator who isn't very good. I'd push through and see if it improves but I'm not hopeful and there's a lot of stuff coming off audible soon so I'm going to move on.

Daddy & Kitten

Daddy Jack was everything I had been hoping for! Jack and Callum began their relationship online, with the intent for it to remain online. Callum knew he wanted a Daddy, someone to care for him and make him feel special. Jack knows he needs to be a Daddy to fulfill his needs - caring for others.

Jack and Callum each start to develop strong feelings for each other, which neither expected with their situation. Callum started pressing Jack for more and to meet in person, but with each being based on separate coasts and their work it would be months before they could make that happen. After days go by without hearing from Jack, Callum finds out he’s been sick and hospitalized. After begging Jack to let him come out and take care of him, a furious Callum realizes it’s been his boss Landon that has been in NYC caring for Jack.

After talking with Verity and Landon, Jack makes the decision to leave NYC for LA and come and get his kitten. While the sparks and emotions fly when Daddy and his kitten get together, Jack worries it’s not enough to keep them together. Callum worries he can never be enough for Jack and that his Daddy will abandon him like his last boyfriend. After Callum is brutally attacked, Callum fears his Daddy will never be able to treat him the same again.

Kate Hawthorne knows how to emotionally drain you and put you back together again. So get your Kleenex ready for this amazing read!

This is the second book in Kate’s Giving Consent series and can be read as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend the first, Worth the Risk. If you haven’t read her first series, The Lonely Hearts, you should check those out as well!

PLEASE READ FIRST MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit.):

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like 'Liberty' from Seth Kann ing,
'Save that he kids' series from EM Leya or
'Jesse's Smile' from Angelique Jurd), it's like
an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times (most romances where you can enjoy
for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader, but
not really an often reread book

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok) It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

A great second book in the series and I hope, Keith and his guys will get a third one!!

I loved this story of the two men who met online and just could not survive without each other such was the depth of their love. There were dramatic times as well as tender times in this story which made them feel more real and relatable. There are a couple of content warnings that you should take note of. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content and a BDSM-like DDLB dynamic.

This book is amazingly sexy. From the moment Callum and Jack meet online, they burn up the pages with their wild attraction and intense webcam action. The heat only intensifies once they are finally together in person. However, there is so much more than just the physical side to these men. Several times, the emotions flying around are painful for the reader - but they are so very worthwhile. Callum and Jack just make sense together. They fill all the spaces that were previously empty for each other, and I mean that in a "fulfilled life" kind of way, though it fits in a naughty way, too.
So much is going on in this book. It's wonderful to see more of Verity, though I am anxious for more time with Landon. He seems to be having issues, maybe with Jack not sharing with him about his relationship with Callum? I'm sure we'll learn more about that in the next book, which will be about Verity and Aaron if there is anything fair and right in this world. I also need to see more of Keith, to know that he is healing. There are so many men to care about in this series. I just love them all, and I can't wait for my next view into their lives.

I have to say I think I loved Callum and Daddy Jack a bit more then Landon and Gregory, their dynamic worked and gave me more feels but thats not to say I didn’t like Landon and Gregory I just feel like I wasn’t Landon’s biggest fan of Landon in this book as I was in book one.

Callum I really liked him in book one but I loved him in this one. Seeing everything from when Jack and Him first began talking to the end when nothing could separate the two of them. Callum is a strong character even when he felt weak I think that was what made him so great.

Shh Daddy Jack! I have not actually read very many Daddy Kink Stories until this year but this one is one of the better one’s that I absolutely love and Jack is the perfect daddy that Callum could have asked for. Sweet, Strong, Giving, and willing to take the time and “Teach” Callum what he can. When they begin all Callum really knows is he wants a Daddy but not really knowing all that would entail. But Jack knows almost as soon as he begins talking to Callum what he needs.

Being in two different cities seem like it would be really hard to me, the distance and everything would suck!
But thankfully they do make it work while getting to know each other.

I love this series so far Kate knows how to pull at the heartstrings and get us going all at the same time.

A light version of an age difference / daddy kink story. It is mostly online/video sex and in-person sex with standard characters for the trope. It is different from most daddy kink stories in that the kink is just for the sex (the D/s isn't quite 24/7 and both characters step out of the roles).

The Daddy isn't into pain, so there is only one scene of consequence with pain play (a mild spanking that the sub requests). The story tends to ramble about a bit, as if the author hadn't planned the plot, and the story logic is rather wanting at times. In particular, though the author claims the MCs are perfect for each other and there is insta-love, she doesn't really demonstrate that in a believable way. I just finished reading it and I have no idea what either of the MCs found attractive/desirable/lovable about the other.

That said, it is good for what it is: erotica with minimally fleshed-out characters. The sex scenes are fun to read and don't go into needless detail that some romance authors get trapped in.

What to do when you need a daddy, but a real-world relationship seems like too much after previous experiences. Thankfully the internet has created a whole new world of options.

Callum finds Daddy Jack online, and they engage in a really sexy relationship. The only problem is that even online you can develop real feelings. Especially when Jack is such an excellent Daddy.

When Jack winds up in hospital things pivot, and the pressure to live in the real world together becomes more real.

I love a Daddy who will go to the ends of the earth (at least across the country) for his kitten. It’s not always an easy path but it leads to a beautiful relationship.

I really enjoyed ZA Martin as the narrator in this one. He captured the two really well.

Another great add to the series. We got just a tease of Jack and Callum's story in the first book and I was dying to see what it was about. Jack might just be my favorite, he's the best mix of sweet, caring and strong. All he wants is to take care of his Boy; the right boy who can also give him what he needs. Callum is adorable, sexy and shy in a way that makes you want to show him how great he can be. With past hurts and discovering that you overcome insecurities with the right family you make. I loved being able to see where their story started awhile ago and them interacting online together, building a foundation based on trust and courage. When they come together it is beyond hot, sparks fly at each scene and it's clear to see they were made for each other. Side characters add into the Universe with twist and turns I did not see coming and neither will you, don't wait to say too much because spoilers but I can't wait for the next.

In which Callum and Jack both look to an online Daddy-boy relationship to avoid serious relationships. But they get serious, so they decide to meet. But then it's too serious so they take a step back. Then it's serious. Throw in a few medical emergencies to move things along in either direction.

This definitely didn't work for me. I felt like at 40% the book was done - Callum and Jack had developed more feelings then they intended so they decided to meet and live happily ever after. Then drama and emotional whip-lashing was thrown in to keep everything going. Medical emergency drama. Self esteem crisis. Secondary character drama - and if the series is about those characters, I can already tell you, I won't be reading on.

Callum was far more willing to admit the way he felt for Jack had escalated, and Jack was…well, Jack was scared of losing what he had now by reaching for more.

A bartender at Rapture in LA, Callum is frustrated with the online relationship he has developed with Jack, who lives in NY. While spending time together online has been fulfilling socially and sexually for both of them, Callum wishes he could actually meet Jack in person. Jack is a daddy who wants to take care of Callum but he doesn’t think he can just leave his life in NY until a health scare has him reevaluating. Maybe it was the extra emphasis on care-taking vs. BDSM, but I enjoyed Worth The Wait a lot more than Worth The Risk. Although I feel there are still too many sex scenes, there’s more plot, more character development, a nice age-gap dynamic, and I could appreciate the interconnectedness of the stories in this series more. One of my favourite m/m narrators (under the pseudonym ZA Martin) narrates the audiobook and does his always excellent job (the whole series is currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!
