Grounded: A Romantic Comedy

Rate this book
There’s no place like home…

When Amelia’s father remarries right as she’s college-bound, she decides to leave behind his happy new beginning—and her annoying new stepbrother, Theo—for good. The three months they lived together proved they have nothing in common except mutual disdain.

Now, ten years later, Amelia finds herself in a situation where she has nowhere else to go but home. To her dad, who is madly in love with his second wife, a woman she barely knows and has never accepted. To her childhood home that has been methodically erased of her late mother and the memories she had of her real family.

And, worst of all, to Theo. Except he’s no longer the awkward teenager she barely remembers. Adding insult to injury, he has somehow transformed into one of the Abercrombie models featured on her posters from high school.

They might be older, but their immature ways are returning. It’s not easy sharing a bathroom and it’s even more difficult resisting the temptation across the hallway. It’s been a decade since their last encounter, and Amelia will soon find out home is where the hate is.

Grounded is an open-door romantic comedy. This book is intended for 18+.

Kristin Mulligan

Based in Southern California, Kristin Mulligan writes stories that blur the line between heart-pounding suspense and heartwarming romance.

Her two romance novels are open-door and full of steam and spice. The Acts Of Life features sibling rivalry, secrets, and a jaw-dropping twist, while Grounded delivers laugh-out-loud moments, emotional depth, and a swoony touch of forbidden love.

Her novella series, Holidays & Homicide, twists familiar holidays into dark, suspenseful tales. The series includes I’ll Be Alone for Christmas and A Christmas to Die For , two chilling Christmas stories steeped in secrets, mystery, and murder. Her newest novella, Crazy Little Thing Called Love , is set around Valentine’s Day and explores obsession, terror, and a kidnapping that will keep readers guessing until the very end. Each title stands alone and can be read in any order. The next installment is tentatively scheduled for release in April 2026.

Fueled by a genre-hopping imagination and far too much cold brew, Kristin is also an exhausted boy mom to the fastest five-year-old you’ll ever meet. She works full-time, and when she’s not chasing her son around, she’s stealing quiet moments to catch her breath and write a few more words.

Dear Rom-Coms, I can’t quit you. And boy am I lucky to have had an early look at this gem from Ms. Mulligan!

The banter, the tension—those abs! 😍 THIS. WAS. BINGEWORTHY. A slow burn, but in all the best possible ways. Mulligan has a way of drawing the reader in so effortlessly and not letting go until the very last page.

Read if you love:

-Dual first-person POV
-Witty banter
-Slow burn
-Well-developed characters
-Rom-Coms served up with a twist
-Steamy open door time 🔥

Fellow readers,,,are you ready?

If you’re looking for a book to take you on a quick paced wild ride full of witty banter, spicy taboo open door romance, well developed fun characters, nostalgic references, twists and turns, complex but satisfying storylines, then look no further!! Here is your Next read!

From author Kristin Mulligan of the debut novel
THE ACTS OF LIFE, of which my entire book club gave FIVE STARS to, comes a new story that is somehow so relatable and yet fantastical all at the same time!

It drew me in from the first few pages and I rode the wave of emotions ranging from sheer joy and lighthearted heartwarming fun to poignant painful heartbreaking moments, sometimes all on the same page!

And the amazing thing about it is that author Kristin Mulligan’s writing style is so rich and fulfilling and has a way of inviting you in as if you are part of the family, you are so immersed, that it left me feeling protective over and wanting to cheer for every character in the book!
It was bittersweet for me when the book ended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish, and I’m so thankful to author Kristin Mulligan for allowing me to read an early copy!

Can’t wait for her next one!

Mulligan really has a way of truly capturing readers' attention and carrying you through a story until the very end. I devoured this one in 3 days. Her writing is fast-paced, sexy, and funny. And the spicey scenes are...🥵🥵

If you want to read a spicey, taboo romance, this one is a must!

I will preface this with, I am not usually a romcom genre kinda girl. It’s not my preferred, in fact I rarely read them. But, when I DO read them, I’m SUPER picky. The smut is usually overdone, the writing is repetitive, and rarely are they really that funny. Kristin, however, is a brilliant writer, and managed to make me LOVE a romcom. Would I ever think I would want to reread a book like this? Nope. But Grounded I would absolutely reread, and probably will.

I laughed, I cried, I REALLY enjoyed the heat in the book (and even asked for more, which is saying something). Seriously. Highly recommended read once the book is published. Huge fan.

Loved another book by Kristin. Her writing is beautiful and truly makes you feel like you’re in the setting. This story will have you hooked from the start and will be the perfect summer beach read this year. I don’t think there was a portion of this book where I felt bored which was so refreshing. Also, I really wish I could go visit Roasted every morning for my coffee :). I loved Theo and Amelia and their character growth but personally I just couldn’t grasp the whole step sibling relationship. That’s my only reason for 4 stars not 5. The ending was fast but the story wrapped up beautifully. I really enjoyed this one and appreciate receiving the ARC from Kristin!

The good:
🍉The cover is so cute. I wanna be on a floatie!
🍉 The setting was fun. I’ve never been to San Diego but it sounds so pretty.

The bad:
🍉The writing was so rushed and choppy that it was hard to keep focus and flow of what was happening. I felt this could’ve used some fine tuning in the story telling/writing because I don’t know I had a hard time w that.
🍉The step sibling trope I have learned is a big no for me. Gave me a lottttt of ick.

Kristin does it again! If Kristin wrote it, I'm gonna read it.

I'll be even more honest, I wasn't on the wagon for this book until half way through. Than I jumped on and loved it. Kristin knows how to write a damn book! Her writing is beautiful and truly makes you feel like you’re in the setting. I literally would read anything from Kristin at this point.

The MC really annoyed me for most of the book. She came across as very immature and I grew tried, fast, of her being an ass to her step-brother. I loved Theo and I did very much appreciate Amelia's character growth but personally I just couldn’t grasp the whole step sibling relationship. I’m not a taboo romance fan, but wanted to give this one a shot since I loved Kristin’s first book so much. Like seriously, one of my all time favorite books.

The ending was fast but the story wrapped up beautifully. That epilogue was the best I've ever read. I was screaming at Kristin and than laughing. Good one!

Overall this was an easy read and would be a great beach read if you enjoy taboo romances, are looking for spice, and love pop culture references!

Theo and Amelia, you two would be a blast to grab a few beers with. Amelia with her sharp, dry wit, and Theo with his sarcastic, mouthy six-pack - there would always be great conversation. Even though at the beginning, I questioned why it had been ten years since they both moved away, I understood more as the story progressed. I was slightly unimpressed with their aversion to their childish ways of talking back to their parents and storming off into their bedrooms, but when you’re an adult who finds yourself living with your parents again I'm sure old habits die hard.
Great romantic comedy! Loved the flirty and back and forth banter! Fun, light read. Perfect for summer!

My second book! Oh, the pressure.

I really hope you all enjoy Amelia & Theo as they navigate being home again. They are flawed, lost, but lovable characters that I tried to write as realistic as possible.

I’ve had this funny story in my head for a while. I love Amelia and the way she handles her predicament. I love Theo for his honesty. And I love as they grow together and into better versions of themselves.

This does deal with elements of grief and the loss of a parent- happens off page and is not mentioned in detail. For a list of all trigger warnings, please check my website.

This is open door and has explicit steamy scenes. Quite a handful.

And to anyone who is intrigued but nervous about the step-sibling aspect, they were 18 when their parents got married and only lived together for three months before leaving for college. And it didn’t go well ;)

Hope this book puts a smile on your face, makes you laugh, or has you wishing you lived in the same beachy town Grounded takes place in. Happy reading!

I was so fortunate enough to get an Arc of this and it was my first book read of 2023! YAY!

First things first, this made me so ready for summer. It's set in a coastal town in California and reading it during winter made me long to be where this story takes place, to hang out with Amelia at a coffee shop or movie theater, and swim with Theo in the pool and flirt with that literary hottie. These characters are in their late 20s which for me, is way better age wise because it's a more believable story.

I will always enjoy the RomCom formatting, but this one had such a unique element to it that I REALLY loved, and sets it aside from recent ones I've read.

The story is written very well and the characters are flawed but relatable, and I think that's what made it stand out in my opinion. It's hard for me to read about teenagers (looking at you Colleen Hoover, but not anymore) falling in love when I'm not in that boat. This is about real life, maintaining a career, changes you don't expect to experience growing up, and that's what made it feel so real. The RomComs I've read have characters go through seemingly insignificant issues, but I'll just leave it at this, THIS book displays real problems that many of us I'm sure will relate to.

Read now if you can but if you must wait until May, book a sunny vacation, grab a blended ice cream coffee drink (nod to you Theo), and read this by the pool.

Apply ample sunscreen and bring a towel because YOU WILL GET HOT AND SWEATY.

The smut. Perfect. Just perfect. Haven't read some of that down and dirty language in a book before and I'm here for it. Perfection.

3.5 ⭐️s?

Really struggling to assign “stars” to this one. What is it about a step-sibling - who you’ve pretty much never lived with (aside from 3m when you were 16) - that makes them taboo (a decade later too)? This is the heart of this particular story and Mulligan constantly pushes her readers to consider this question throughout the book.

I do have to admit that I almost gave up after the first 2-3 pages - I really didn’t care for Amelia and I can’t say I really grow to like her either - but somehow I stuck it out. Mulligan is a good storyteller and I got hooked (I was also on a long plane ride and had already downloaded this book and finished another one so beggars can’t be choosers). Though the death of parents features heavily in the background of this book, there is a lot of great banter, humor, sexual tension, and anticipation in this book (plus, a fair amount of steam). I didn’t care for the ending though - I’m not sure what I wanted. It’s also possible that I was so tired that I just kind of glossed through the last few chapters and may have to re-read when I’m more awake.

This was a quick, addicting read! I’m not a taboo romance fan, but wanted to give this one a shot since I loved Kristin’s first book - The Acts of Life! And while I can say I’m definitely not a taboo romance girlie, I think if you are and are in need of a good beach read this is the book for you.

Like I said, I’m not really a taboo girlie and the “step sibling” relationship kept throwing me off - but that aside this was an easy read filled with tons of pool fun. There was just a little too much insta-lust between the characters for my preference.

Overall - if you enjoy taboo romances, are looking for some spice, and love pop culture references I would recommend this one!

Thank you Kristin for an arc in exchange for an honest review 🫶🏻

At 50% (and that was with me forcing myself through for book club) and it’s going to be a DNF.

It’s such a gorgeous summery cover so I was anticipating loving it, especially after reading her first book.

But unfortunately it didn’t deliver for me. The characters are so annoyingly immature, the entire first half is them arguing like teenagers. It was repetitive and the writing just felt off.

I look forward to reading her sequel to The Acts of Life but I have to put this one down.

Loved this, loved everything about it!! The build of sexual tension between the main characters plus the actual awkward tension in the relationships with the other supporting characters. The taboo tone of the book. Such a well done piece of art. Loved!

SYNOPSIS:
Amelia’s gets thrown a huge curve ball when she loses her job, her boyfriend, and apartment all in the same day. With nowhere to go she moves back home with her Father and Step Mom. Planning to keep it short term so she can avoid her step brother Theo. To Amelia’s dismay, Theo is back home too. Although the time they lived together was 10 years ago and very briefly, it was no secret they didn’t get along. Now 10th are later a lot has changed. What ensues is some serious tension, funny banter and some spicy steam.

THOUGHTS:
Kristin really knows how to write relatable characters and grab your attention from the first page. So grateful to Kristin for me giving me a chance to read an review this one early. This is a perfect read for summer. For lovers of taboo romance, witty banter and spicy open door romance this one is for you. Congratulations Kristin.

"Why do you assume we'd fail? What if we don't? What if we end up happier together than we've ever been?"

"That would be a great ending."

This was a fun, fast read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It felt a little repetitive with the inner monologue. But it brought the heat and some serious growth for both characters.

I was nervous about the taboo relationship, but I'm glad there were so many characters always mentioning that it wasn't weird 😉 keep convincing me! Hehehe.

“Happy endings aren’t guaranteed for everyone, and sometimes, the villain gets his redemption.” 🖤

“For the longest time, I wanted a happily ever after no matter what it cost. But now? I’d rather have a messy love that evolves with time. A dependable kind of love that will bend and coil to shape to our needs that may change as we get older.” 🖤

Well cover me in a rhinestone onsie and call me Elvis because HUNKA HUNKA BURNIN’ LOVE!

Amelia is the definition of SLAY QUEEN YAS!!!! She wakes up every day to go to her dream job and comes home every day to her dream man. She is well on her way up that corporate ladder that she has built until… her entire world is turned upside down.
She thinks she’s getting a promotion, only what she gets is a boot in her butt and a “please sign this NDA” for all your hard work.
All she wants to do is fall into her boyfriend Bennett’s arms and let him console her, but she quickly finds out… his arms are already full, and have been for a while.
Crushed by the weight of betrayal, Amelia packs her things and moves home… if she can even call it that anymore. And just when she thinks life can’t get any worse, she runs into a brick wall.
A tall, blonde, sexy brick wall dressed up in the skin of her step brother Theo.

If she thought she hated him before… well she really hates him now, because how dare he show up looking like Pablo Picasso himself molded his perfectly chiseled body when she is fresh out of a break up and jobless with nothing to show for the last decade of their separation when CLEARLY the last decade has been extremely kind to him. Ugh.

One roof.
One month.
One promise.
One time.
One lie.

One second chance…

I was in a reading slump for months and I couldn’t manage to finish any book.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Grounded and I loved it so much! I binged this book in one day and it finally got me out of my slump!

Kristin’s debut novel, The Acts of Life, is still one of my favorite books ever. Grounded is a romantic comedy that was so much fun to read and had so much depth. Her writing style is great and sucks you in from the beginning.

The characters were developed well and their banter had me laughing out loud! I miss them already. I’m planning on rereading it when it releases!

Let me introduce you to my favorite romcom of ‘24 🥰🔥 This one has been sitting on my shelf for over a year and I immediately regret not reading it sooner. Amelia and Theo are absolute babes and just characters I absolutely fell in love with. Amelia’s character is so very relatable! Losing a job and ending up back at your parents- yes many people’s big time fear. Besides these incredible characters, I just loved the storyline. Usually I can predict where a romcom is going or the conflict, but this one I couldn’t! This made me love it even more!! I highly recommend adding this to your spring break or summer TBR AND READ IT! don’t be a me and wait 🤣 easily 5 stars!

¡¿Cómo no me lo he leído antes?!

While this book is much different than her first book Acts of Life (one of my favorite reads!) It was still so enjoyable. The humor in this was golden! Kristin did such a good job on the romcom part of this story. She had me laughing all throughout with movie references, wit, and the bickering and banter between our MC characters. It was such a feel good romcom that kept me engaged and reading through very quickly. This will be the perfect summer time read for 2023 as it will have you wanting to be in the pool or beach, going to Roasted for a morning coffee and giving you all the warm and fuzzy feelings that summer brings. I thought Kristin did a wonderful job depicting grief and the different ways people cope with it with the main characters. The only reason this isn’t quite a five star for me was because personal preferences alone.. I hadn’t read a step sibling trope before and while moments it was totally no big deal, some moments it was just a bit much for me personally and made me cringe, I just don’t think that trope is a trope for me. Again, that is all a personal preference. The writing was great, the comedy was wonderful, the romance was swoon worthy, the story was solid. You should absolutely give this one a try when it releases in May!

Ok now that I’ve cooled myself off after reading this one, I can write my review. Not only was this one hot, but there was so much depth in the storyline and between characters.

Right off the bat, Kristin hooks you with a painful, yet hilarious scene and doesn’t let up until the end. I really enjoyed the growth between Amelia & Theo’s characters, together and individually. There was so much to this story that was completely unexpected. I knew there would be some laugh out loud moments with top notch banter. But what I didn’t expect was to be in my feelings during a lot of parts; feeling the heartbreak and emotions right alongside of both Theo & Amelia. Also, where can I find a coffee shop like Roasted because come on! It was written so perfectly! I enjoyed Grounded a lot & cannot wait to see what else Kristin has in store for us in the future. 4.5 ⭐️ (rounded up)

A HUGE thank you to Kristin Mulligan for sending this e-arc over. Also, for introducing me to a taboo topic that I didn’t know could be super hot & spicy! 😏 Check out Grounded on its pub date 3/28!

Mulligan serves up another spicy delight for your reading pleasure!

This fast paced “taboo” read has a little bit of everything. Angsty tension, cat and mouse vibes, plenty of spice, and great chemistry.

I appreciated that the characters, while technically step-siblings, didn’t grow up together. Like in the step-sibling romance in Colleen Hoover’s Ugly Love, the older ages and obvious chemistry made the dynamic feel forbidden without feeling creepy.

I absolutely love Mulligan’s writing and, as someone who doesn’t lean toward reading open door, I love how she writes the intimate scenes. They never feel forced or there just to be there. You feel the build up, the passion, and the emotional connection to compliment the physical one.

This book was a fun change from Mulligan’s romantic thriller, The Acts of Life. I really enjoyed seeing her tackle a different genre. When you love an author’s literary voice is fun to read diverse story telling.

If you love rom-coms with a twist, witty banter, and a well fleshed out story this one’s for you!

A fun & summer-y taboo romance with spicy scenes but also addresses heavy issues.

Theo and Amelia are technically step siblings but didn't grow up together, only spending one horrible summer in the same house after their parents got married. They haven't seen each other in 10 years and Amelia is forced to move home after a series of unfortunate events. Theo decides this is his chance to shoot his shot (literally & figuratively) with Amelia after crushing on her since that summer.

Kristin navigates this budding relationship with care, but also there's taboo and fun aspects here. There is a twist at the end when I was maybe hoping it was heading towards HEA but that's the romance reader in me.

I loved reading this on vacation - easy to read since the conversations between characters flows well, fun side characters and really didn't know where it was going to go until the last page.
