So Deep in Shadow: Short Stories

Rate this book
Dive into So Deep in Shadow, a captivating collection of short stories inspired by the multifaceted nature of the word “so.” This anthology explores human resilience, chaos, and hope through ten evocative tales.

From a mysterious fog engulfing a city in “So Dense” to the chilling debut of the guillotine in “So Humane,” and the deceptive kindness in “So Kind,” each story delves into the complexities of the human condition. Other narratives, like “So Long,” born from a haunting train-side encounter in Italy, and “So Quiet,” a puzzling tale of selective silence, showcase McDowell’s knack for blending real-life inspiration with imaginative twists. “So Snowy” and “So Tired” reflect personal struggles with loss and depression, while “So Sweet” offers a tender look at dementia’s toll, and “So Alive” concludes with a hopeful nod to historical redemption on Scotland’s Isle of Iona.

McDowell’s fascination with language and chaos shines through, making this collection a thought-provoking journey. Perfect for fans of literary fiction, these stories entertain while prompting reflection on life’s challenges. With a rich afterword revealing the linguistic and personal roots of each tale, So Deep in Shadow is a must-read for those who enjoy narratives that linger.

Markus McDowell is an author whose stories draw from a life shaped by exploration, scholarship, and a deep curiosity about the human condition. He calls a yacht on the Pacific Ocean home, where the rhythm of the waves often inspires his writing amid the vast, ever-changing seascape. Spending nearly half his time traveling, he has wandered extensively across the United States—from bustling cities to quiet rural corners—and ventured through much of Europe and parts of the Middle East, gathering insights that infuse his narratives with authentic cultural textures and philosophical depth.

With a background that includes a PhD in theology, a law degree, a music degree, and advanced studies in ancient history, literature, and religion, Markus approaches storytelling as a way to wrestle with timeless questions of faith, ethics, and existence. His works, including novels like To and Fro Upon the Earth and Onesimus, and short story collections such as The Sky Over Chaos and So Deep in Shadow, blend historical elements with speculative fiction, often exploring the shadows where human frailty meets profound truths. When not at sea or on the road, he enjoys composing music and reflecting on the intersections of art, law, and spirituality that have defined his path. Markus invites readers to join him in these explorations through his newsletter at markusmcdowell.com/newsletter, where he shares free stories and glimpses into his creative process.

A quick-read series of 10 intriguing, sometimes feel good, and sometimes frightening, distinct short stories. In a neat 100 pages, McDowell plays off the many uses of the word "so." His Afterword explains his intent and background of each. McDowell uses own experience and love of words to write in an engaging style; the stories are easy to read, thought provoking, and sometimes painful to my reading. He deals often in sadness and chaos-to-nihilism in an effort to provide insight into the human struggle for meaning and relationships in a sometimes confusing and unsympathetic world. My own 2 favorites from the set are perhaps "So Tired" and "So Sweet." "So Rude" (a 2022 short story content winner) follows as a close third, and "So Alive" leans away from prose toward poetry. The Afterword was a fitting close--see also https://markusmcdowell.com/2022/11/21... . Available in audiobook and print.
