I've read several memoirs and narratives of military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you are seeking high tension gunfights or door to door combat, this isn't it. It doesn't have to be, though.
There is considerable value in the documentation of a regular tour of service. Major Elliott's experiences do include the harrowing but this narrative spends much more time on the day-to-day existence of a company officer in Iraq.
I do wonder if Elliott's experience as an ISP trooper would make a more interesting read- he briefly mentions his roles responding to disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy- but I appreciate his experiences in the military.

Reading this book felt like experiencing these life events with him. A very good story of an everyday person doing extraordinary things.
