I threw a penny into a fountain… and ended up abducted by a group of fae called the Wild Hunt.

They dragged me into their world and made me one of them.

And then, they started hunting me.

I managed to convince their leader to take me somewhere safe, but after I got there, he revealed the price of his help:

Me.

One thing I have repeatedly said before in many reviews is it’s ok to have a MC who is not crass.

Being crass is not some cool power move. (Please just stop this trend.)

(Ps most women when we are angry or upset can still articulate without cursing or letting our emotions control us in wild unfashionable ways all the damn time.)

January’s character is a cookie cutter for I’m an independent woman, I’ll cut you, I trust no one, I’m going to curse every chance I get and is the definition of immature. And also I’m definitely different than most girls type of vibe. (Which is over hype)

Why is this so popular?

You can be a strong female with out this type of attitude. This is such a disappointing view on women, because majority of us don’t act like this.

Can you tell I really didn’t like her? Haha.

Besides the disappointing and disaster characters it was an interesting plot idea that had so much potential for something greater.

I won’t be continuing this series.

I’m obviously biased with my review, but I had a blast writing January and Lian’s story! Vevol is a fun world to be emerged in, and I can’t wait to see where the other characters’ stories take us ♥️

This is the second time I've read a book by Lola Glass and her books definitely aren't for me. I don't like the way how her main focus is writing wattpad level smut and everything else (like plot, character development, and world building) is placed on the backburner the whole time. I personally don't enjoy books like that but if you do then this author is for you. (I DNFd this book at about 50%)

A word of warning…

I wanted to like this book more but, in all, didn’t think there was much plot to the story overall and found it very repetitive. And by repetitive I mean the same words being used over and over. Now I don’t mind swearing but the overuse of ‘bastard’ and ‘fucking’ bordered on zealous. I hate the trope of when an author creates a ‘tough’ character the only way to convey this is through excessive swearing. All it did was make me roll my eyes. I would also warn that there is no trigger warning with this book and it really needs one. There are references to sexual abuse and child abuse almost immediately from the start of the book that are only really used to make the fmc seem jaded and ‘tough’. The handling of these sensitive topics was very jarring and seemed to be used as a generic plot device to establish character traits. It’s not handled too deeply or sensitively, in my opinion 🤷‍♀️

Stopping at page 57 because this is not for me.

Flat 'tough girl' main female character who swears too much and goes on and on about what a shit life she's had and how she doesn't trust anyone and everyone lies and blah blah.

What's the world-building like you ask? There isn't any

January doesn't react to anything (aside from swearing just because apparently that's cool and tough?!)
- gets transported to a new world - no reaction
- people turn into creatures - no reaction
- I turn into a creature - no reaction
- have to stay locked in this place - no reaction

The aim of this was obviously a destined mate's story and the ultimate goal being them sleeping together but nothing else seemed to matter aside from that.

It seems to me that there’s a lot of internalized misogyny that someone needs to work on

Excessive use of f*ck made me DNF half way through. Any word no matter what it is if used multiple times on a single page gets repetitive, annoying & ultimately Boring.
Ruined a decent story.

I am quite torn about this one because I have very ambivalent feelings about the story itself and the writing style utilised. I enjoyed it, but I also didn’t like it. The story itself was entertaining, Calian, the MMC was a cheeky little sh!t, if you can call a huge dragon-shifter fae little, and I liked the romance as well. However, Ari wasn’t my favourite to begin with, she was very crass. Although she did grow on me, her narrative really wasn’t enjoyable, and the writing style felt messy.

The romance was both fast paced and slow paced which balanced out. Whilst Calian was more than eager to be with Ari, she was more distant as a result of her past trauma. So whilst the physical attraction was there, even their communication was filled with banter and playful remarks, and sensual interactions, it took time for the emotions to come to the surface. They did jump into bed quite quickly after their meeting, like in 2 days-ish, so the 1st spicy scene happened quite fast for how long they have known each other, but it was balanced out when Ari needed space to kind of sort out her feelings and there was significant distance between them. So, I personally appreciated the little step-back because it made the romance more realistic in the sense that their connection wasn’t just built on lust.

Calian had a golden retriever energy. He was flirty, smirky and playful. He was also a savage, brutal and possessive character. And he was also an attentive, sweet and passionate person. He was pretty well rounded in positive personality traits. He was showering Ari with anything she could have needed from clothes to blankets and pillows, teaching her how to connect with this new world she found herself in, cooking dinner for the ex-humans, though he primarily did that for Ari, and letting her lead and find the right pace she needed for the relationship to blossom. He was an absolute perfection and I loved him for it. But I also felt that he was unrealistic even in a fictional setting because I don’t recall him having any flaws. I mean, he was a virg!n but he became this s3x god within two paragraphs, so again, not a single flaw. Whilst he was shown and described as brutal and savage and possessive, he was always led by his instinct to protect Ari, so I can’t consider those traits as flaws either. I would have liked him to have one or two flaws.

As for Ari… she was a strong, independent woman who was struggling in the human world, but it all changed when she found herself taken to the Fae world. I understood why she was so grumpy and rude, she had some very serious trauma which left her with some attachment issues, and she needed time to realise that all the positive events surrounding her, the world she found herself in, the friends she bonded with and the man she started to fall for didn’t necessarily mean that they would just disappear in the blink of an eye. However, I found it hard to connect with her because of the way she was written, because of her own crass and immature narrative.

And that is where the writing style caused me some discomfort because the writing style utilised was woven into Ari’s character. Firstly, for how short it was, the beginning very much focused on Ari’s experience rather than the romantic plotline. For a short novella that is romance, character and spice focused, the first 25% was made up of a huge amount of unnecessary descriptions. It was drowned in telling rather than showing about all that Ari saw such as clothes which were literally tops, trousers and shorts, and hair colour and styles of the side-characters, therefore, nothing significant such a medieval dress that would require a description or unusual hair colours and styles.

Secondly, the writing focused so much on Ari’s experiences that in the first 25% Calian only showed up for a page or two which really took away from the romance of the book since it was already a short novella to begin with. We needed to know what Ari felt as a main character who found herself in an absolutely unknown world, but that wasn’t even the focus because she was really just very inconsistent and illogical. One second she didn’t want to hope, and she didn’t care what happened, but two pages later she cared, and she could see herself being safe and comfortable in this new world. Her thoughts and emotions were very jumpy, and I felt that they weren’t inconsistent in the way a character’s could be when they are confused, it was more like the writing style made her thoughts and emotions messy.

Finally, my biggest issue was Ari’s style of narrative. It was very crass and very juvenile. She was swearing left, right and centre and spoke in slangs and abbreviations in her inner monologues and conversations too. I understand she grew up in a very difficult environment, and the author wanted to show that she was strong and hard and a survivor, but I felt that the way her inner monologues and conversations were written, the way her narrative explained the story made the story feel very uncomfortable. This hard and strong front could have been showcased via her actions rather than through her inner monologues because I’m sorry for sounding harsh, it made the story and the writing feel cheap. I hope this was only because of Ari’s narrative and won’t be reoccurring in the other books, because from what I’ve seen, the other girls had very different way of approaching things so their narrative should differ too.

Overall, it was an entertaining story with a charming MMC and an FMC who could potentially grow on readers, and the romance was fun too, but the writing style and the narrative, all the cussing and slangs did make it feel a bit uncomfortable to read. So, The Savage Fae’s Mate got 3/5 stars from me, but definitely on the lower side of the 3 stars.

Ratings of the other books in the series:

The Wild Hunt: The Complete Series 2/5 stars

The Savage Fae's Mate 3/5 stars
The Feral Fae's Human 3/5 stars
The Brutal Fae's Life 3/5 stars

Daaamn, this book really said here is a childhood trauma for you. Went straight in without hesitation.

Page 21
Lmao, girl, get a brain. You gave him your name and he specifically told you who should be the only person to know your name coming from your lips. I’m begging you to put 2 and 2 together 😂

Page 34
The writing is very heavy telling and barely any showing. Paragraphs and paragraphs of people appearances and clothing. It’s completely unnecessary. I don’t need to know whether they are wearing socks or not, or what hair colour each of the 10+ people has. It’s irrelevant. We could have been informed about these when or if their presence became relevant. There are also loads of unnecessary descriptions.

Page 41
Lol, Calian is funny. He is a cheeky b@stard 😅 I like him so far. But I have to say, I want more interactions between fae and human. We are in Ari’s inner monologues way too much.

Page 67
Wait, what? Oh my god, that makes sense. The fae has no females here other than the humans.

Page 81
My god, Calian is… hot. The way he behaves, the way he talks, the way he is written. Cheeky, flirty bast@rd. He seems to be a book boyfriend material so far. And the interactions between Calian and Ari are both funny, flirty and sensual. Can the way people talk to each other be sensual? Because the way these two behave with each other… Ari doesn’t stand a chance against Calian’s charm.

Page 160
The Savage Fae’s Mate: I loved Calian, and I liked the story too. Ari did grow on me as the story progressed as well and I liked the way the romance blossomed. It was both fast and slow, kind of balanced. But I didn’t like how it was written. The writing style felt very juvenile as the narrative was full of swearing and slang. I would’ve liked it a bit softer. It was also a bit confusing sometimes.

Romantasy / Compañeros predestinados

Ari y Lian.

🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 on the Spice Meter

This one was a pleasantly surprising, albeit quick read.
Loved the concept of where this was going, the fantasy world itself, and exploration of SA and abuse survivors being central characters had a lot of potential. I just wish it was longer! 200-ish pages is not long enough for a full character arc in a standalone book. The rushed storyline in the first few chapters gave me whiplash, and the ending tied up very quickly too. More world building and character development could have made this so good!

Will I still be reading the rest of the series just for the smut? You’d better believe it. The spice was delicious, I ate it up. Sex education for clueless fae males was an absolute crack up.

Overall, a great quickie 😉 that you can relish in one sitting.

This was decent. More like a 3.25⭐️, if I’m being precise. I wasn’t sure I was going to dig it when I read the first page and I nearly put it down. But here’s the kicker - the second book is better so it’s worth enjoying this one. These are interconnected stand alones and the series arc really starts off in the second book.

Women are taken from earth by the Seelie Fae, 5 of whom make up “the wild hunt” and bring the women to their realm. All the Fae are shifters (dragons, hellhounds, Phoenix … and so on) and the women are transformed into Fae when they come across. There are about 20 women to hundreds of Fae men.

The concept of the world and stories have some cool twists on some classic tropes and of course it’s Lola Glass, so there’s definitely spice.

Also it was wayyy too rushed this could’ve been so much better if she dragged it out AND THEY DID NOT BANG AT WHAT 30% THEOUGH THE BOOK LIKE. Also that first scene was foul but the others were fine

intriguing

This was a fun read! My favorite stories revolve around the Fae, and I really loved this authors take on the concept. It had the perfect amount of angst and romance. I would have liked more world building, but that’s the only thing that I wanted more of

One day read

This book was such an easy read. I finished it in one day. Surprisingly an interesting shifter romance. The chemistry between Ari and Lian was so cute and playful but loved his possessive attitude. I wish you learned a little more about Ana and what happens to her but maybe that will be learned in later books.
