A fun and engaging “coping toolkit” to help kids ages 8 to 12 face life’s challenges, manage emotions, and thrive!
Kids today are experiencing alarming rates of mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma. The good news is there are skills they can learn now to gain psychological flexibility, regulate emotions, and cultivate the resilience needed to navigate life’s many storms. This timely and much-needed workbook can help.
In The ACT Workbook for Kids, Tamar D. Black offers fun activities grounded in evidence-based acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help kids deal with worry, sadness, and anger. The exercises in this workbook are based on the processes of the ACT Kidflex—a simplified version of the ACT Hexaflex—and help kids work through the difficult thoughts and feelings that can arise from anxiety, depression, and stress. The workbook also includes tons of kid-friendly worksheets, crossword and word search puzzles, body-based practices, and arts and crafts that kids can do by themselves or with a parent, counselor, or clinician.
Most importantly, the skills in this workbook will help kids balance their emotions at home, at school, and in other social situations—such as going to parties, being with friends, and extracurricular activities. No matter what the situation, children can use these quick and simple strategies whenever they feel worried, sad, angry, stressed, or are struggling with self-esteem.
In these increasingly challenging times, kids and teens need mental health resources more than ever. With more than 1.6 million copies sold worldwide, Instant Help Books are easy to use, proven-effective, and recommended by therapists.

The ACT Workbook for Kids is packed with 42 activities to teach kids how to identify and deal with their big emotions! It’s written in a way that would allow kids to read it on their own, and also encourages them to ask for adult support during craft activities. As Dr. Black says in the beginning, it’s great in the home or in a therapy session.
The ACT Workbook for Kids is an exceptional resource that stands out for its user-friendly design and accessibility. The workbook's language is not only easy to read but also engaging, making it highly approachable for both children and those working therapeutically with them.
One of its notable strengths lies in its ability to break down abstract concepts into digestible portions, ensuring that young readers can grasp and apply the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) effectively! The workbook skillfully combines simplicity with depth, making it a valuable tool for both beginners and seasoned professionals in child therapy. Whether you're a counselor, therapist, or educator, the practical exercises and insightful guidance provided in the workbook empower you to navigate therapeutic sessions with confidence.
In summary, "The ACT Workbook for Kids" is not just a book; it's a well-crafted guide that effortlessly bridges the gap between theory and application. Its readability, ability to simplify abstract concepts, and its overall contribution to therapeutic work with children make it a standout resource in the field.
This is undoubtedly THE best kids workbook I’ve ever read! I absolutely LOVED Tamar Black’s first book for clinicians, ACT FOR TREATING CHILDREN, and this kids’ workbook is equally as brilliant. This workbook can be used by kids on their own at home, or parents can do the activities together with kids. I am using the activities and worksheets with children in my clinic to help them understand and practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and there is also a beautiful chapter on self-compassion. There are kid-friendly summaries at the end of each chapter which you can download in color, print and give to kids. Parents can also print the summaries for their kids to put up at home (what a great way to remind kids of what they’ve learned in the workbook). Tamar has an incredible gift for putting ACT into simple, everyday language that’s easy to understand, and now kids (and their parents) can benefit at home from her work. This workbook is a must-have for every child aged 8-12 and their parents, and younger kids could also benefit too. It's also a must-have for therapists who work with kids. It's fun, creative, and teaches powerful life skills in a simple and very effective way, that also empowers kids. Highly recommended!
As an anxiety and OCD child therapist I am always looking for evidenced-based children’s workbooks that are engaging, entertaining and easy to use. This book does not disappoint! I found the language to be engaging and simplistic for kids to digest. The activities were fun and honed in on the skills of accepting thoughts and feelings, while doing things that are important to you.
I bought this book as a therapist, but as a mom to a 12 year old with anxiety and OCD I’ll be using this at home as well. I know my daughter will be able to do these activities independently and it will walk her through building ACT skills without heavy or boring jargon.
I love the universal nature of this workbook. I can see younger kids, ages 4-6 using this with the help of a parent. For older kids, this is a perfect independent skill building tool. This book is about all emotions, so it is perfect for any child learning to manage big feelings.
I’ll definitely be recommending this to the parents I work with, and will be using it with my own kids as well.
As a clinical psychologist with a long history of working with kids, I absolutely love this book and recommend it as a great resource for anyone supporting the mental health needs of children. Each activity is thoughtfully constructed and beautifully explained. Using simple yet respectful language, Dr Black guides children and their caregivers through beautiful, practical activities to gently develop their skills for psychological flexibility and resilience. It provides a very safe way to help children gently explore their relationship with their thoughts and feelings as they take charge of the decisions they make about the actions that matter to them.
Mental health clinicians, teachers and parents will all love using the activity sheets from this book. They would make a great addition to the primary school health curriculum and are an especially great option for parents wanting to support their children's growth as an in-between therapy sessions support, or for use whilst waiting to commence or as part of a maintenance plan after therapy.
Dr. Black has written a wonderful, practical workbook to guide children to accept and more effectively manage their difficult thoughts and feelings, enabling them to do the things that really matter to them. With easy-to-understand metaphors and fun activities, this delightful book is an essential resource for children and their parents and a valued addition to any mental healthcare providers' bookshelf in addition to the author's ACT for Treating Children.
