Life’s pleasures used to be so simple: a fast ride on my motorcycle, a backyard barbeque with my siblings, and taking down criminals to safeguard Montreal’s citizens.
Sadly, those days ended the moment my fiery side emerged.
I’m a fire elemental. Mind blown.
The deadly Poreskoro family wants to feed on my fae essence. Rude.
And if they succeed, they’ll gain the strength to rebuild their army of evil. Terrifying.
Demons, drug lords, and deception I can handle, but when a dark storm of danger falls over my family, things have gone too far.
With evil brewing, enemies running rampant, and fae criminals gunning for me and my family, I widen my stance and get ready for the hits. Who’s manipulating things behind the scenes? Who’s coming after the people I care about? And who the hell is stupid enough to think I’d let it happen?
About Auburn Tempest Auburn Tempest is a pen name for JL Madore, a multi-genre novelist giving life to Fantasy, Paranormal, and Sci-Fi Romance. Under the pen name, Auburn Tempest, she writes Urban Fantasy without the sexy-steamy. But whether Romance or not, she loves to twist Alpha heroes and kick-ass heroines into chaotic, hilarious, fast-paced, magical situations and make them really work for their happy endings.
She lives outside of Toronto, Canada with her love of over 35 years and a menagerie of family, friends, and animals.
Although I did enjoy reading this second installment in the Chronicles of an Urban Elemental series it has not yet found its groove as far as I am concerned.
There are a lot to like about the book. Jules and her family are cool. There are a lot of the usual bantering that you would expect from this kind of book. There are of course a bunch of action and in-between there are the usual family business, work business, training and so on and so forth.
However, as I wrote in my review for the first book in the series, the story and the book as a whole did not feel as thought through and worked on as the books in Chronicles of an Urban Druid.
In one moment Jules & Co successfully goes up against beings that have, according to the story, laid waste to kingdoms and in the next chapters she gets her assed kicked by everything from said beings’ underlings (which almost kills her) and common street thugs. As a matter of fact Jules gets her ass kicked more often than not which is quite annoying actually.
Then we have the silly, stupid and way overused twist with the obligatory budding romance just getting started and then stopped in its tracks by one of the parties uttering something nonsensical like “this was a mistake” or “I cannot get involved” or both. If I had a cent for every book that nonsense has been used in I would be a billionaire. As I wrote overused and lazy.
Oh, and the author should read up a bit about magma. Yes, it is urban fantasy and it is not supposed to be overly realistic but please, you are telling me that someone that do indeed get broken ribs and all that, just like a normal person, can take a fucking magma bath? It is molten rock for fuck sake! It would crush her, fireproof or not. Also, magma is somewhere between 700 and 1200 degrees. Good luck with putting an open magma pool in your backyard, and paying the energy bill for keeping an open magma pool warm and cozy.
Again, it feels like the story was rushed and ideas thrown in without much thought.
Anyway, I did enjoy reading the book. There’s enough good stuff for me to give it a three star rating.
I enjoy all the books in this world I'm just not sure that white authors should be writing about a PoC character learning that their original skin colour is blue. There are just a lot of dimensions to this that I think would be okay if a PoC wrote about it an the nuance but is a bit disconcerting as it implies that the character was made into a Black woman by someone else and is not, in fact, Black. And this really isn't something I feel should be a side plot if it's going to be introduced as it would have massive ramifications on someone.
The quints are learning to handle they’re elements Jules is learning that being a cop is even better with fire
Jules has her brothers and Gareth to thank for a sanctuary, her magma pit. And they are all learning to handle their new elements. Jules her fire, Kenzie her healing, Brian his earth, and Zephyr the wind. As they learn to jointly work the magic it grows. They find an other set like them but don’t get the protection there fast enough and that team dies thiuts them at disadvantage in next fight
All the 5 star reviews have me squinting at my tablet. I love the banter and the writing is still solid but I’d say that this book does extremely little in adding depth to any of the characters we learned about in the first book. I’m also not loving all the information regurgitation thats happening over and over. 80% through and I find that I’m thinking “when is this story going to get moving and why the heck do I have to read Jules’ explanation of elementals?” Definitely not as strong as the first book.
2d in a spin-off from the Urban Druid world. After the veil falls, Montreal cop Juliet Gagne has her magic awakened and discovers she’s a fire elemental. She drives a Harley and lives in an inherited firehouse (I love the pole) with four other fae orphans adopted by the Gagne family.
The creator of the drug Second Sight may be dead and his facilities destroyed, but a new Second Sight 2.0 death wave is about to hit the streets.
Fave scenes: Garith’s park rescue, Jules getting out of the trunk, Gareth’s heating pad, Onyx & Aurora’s naughty accident and Onyx discovering Jules’s pool.
Jules and her squad find people are dying from the drug Second Sight, which they thought they had stopped. They need to find the people who are producing it and stop them before more people die. Jules and her family are also still working on controlling their powers and are working on ways to help others with their awakening. This is a very good series and I cannot wait for the next book.
Auburn Tempest is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors of all times. I love how she incorporates people into family units and their bonds are unshakable. This latest book sees the quints out for more world saving adventures...and they even pick up some surprise guests in the process. Full of elements, magick, budding romance and action...this book has something for everyone.
Its a formula entry into the Michael Anderle world of mass production pulp fiction. But in this case the MC is quirky enough to keep it interesting for the at least these first two books. Also Ms. Tempests command of language is quirky fun in its own right. In any case my interest was maintained enough so that I read it through finishing at 4am.
I love all of Auburn Tempest's books and this one absolutely lived up to my expectations of the fun, humour, family and action that she always delivers. While this book felt more character driven than some, it was good to spend time with the Gagne clan and their growing circle of friends, getting to know them and their developing powers. As always, highly recommended.
Jules, despite being a super detective, sometimes gets it a tad wrong, and boy does she make a wrong choice in this instance. Can’t say much more as I don’t want to spoil the story. Suffice to say I couldn’t stop turning the pages, it was just too exciting. Action packed from first to last page, next one please.
I love all of the characters in the Urban Druid and Urban Elemental series. It is so heartwarming to read about families that are loyal, loving, fun and that extend to those who need family. These books are so positive with good overcoming evil. We need more books like these.
If you want a book to get your mind of your day job or being in University this one is for you. Don't forget to look for the reading list by this author all fantastic but they are amazing read in order. Auburn Tempest knows how to make a great story. I feel like Michael is my person light leading me to another great author. Thanks Michael x
I'm going to be happily ensconced the rest of the day reading Book 3 because I can't wait to see where Jules life goes next. I also have theories about Gareth I'm looking forward to seeing if I guessed correctly. All in all, just the fun romp I needed this weekend 😁
Congratulations to Auburn Tempest and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and e,xciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories.
I really enjoy these books. The characters have challenges to overcome but they also have joy, compassion and appreciation for the people in their lifes! Reading these books leave me encouraged to face the challenges in my life and with more compassionate for those around me. Thank you for helping me be a better person!
I'm really enjoying this spin off from the Cases of the Urban Druid series. I love how it ties into same family of choice mentality with different characters & their quirks. It will be interesting to see where Auburn Tempest goes with this team.
I love this magical universe and this offshoot is great for me as it adds in the element of being a cop drama as well. It ticks lots of positive boxes and in a great package of magic, fun, family and friendship bonds, animal companions and action. What's not to love xx
I just really enjoy everything this dynamic duo produces. I have a pretty good idea who Gareth is, and this book just settled my conviction. The Quebec quint is learning and growing and I can't wait to see what else they get up to!
This is a new story line for me and until I stopped trying to apply reality I found the story hard to swallow. Now I am hooked and have purchased the series.
Great sequel to a solid first in the series. Love how this series has its own story line and doesn’t keep pulling cameos from Fi and family. Authors are building a solid world.
Wow Jules jumps in like Fiona, however, her team is not yet fully formed She got hurt bad Others too Bummer Love the story Love the characters Looking forward to where this is headed
Just finished #2 and ready for the next one. These books are great fun. The series is interesting, the characters personable and I have to believe Auburn's life growing up in an Irish family influences much of her writing.
Another smashing success for Jules and her family, they were able to accomplish several things this book. I hope that Gareth and Jules continue to hit it off. Onto the next book.
