The guiding light of the north unites two fragile hearts on the verge of shattering.
A call in the middle of the night summoned GPSA Agent Analiese Ortega to the field of an ongoing case. After a recent devastating loss and deeply burrowed self-doubt about her abilities, Ana insists she isn't ready to return to work.
With lives at stake, what choice does she have?
Agent Magnus Bjornson has seen it all, been jaded by most of it and amused by little else the world has to offer. Something about his new colleague thaws his iceberg heart despite the ongoing injustices they continue to face with this case.
Jodi Kendrick lives in Eastern Ontario Canada with her Favourite Person and chompy furbaby, while their adult children explore the wider world.
As a romance author, she writes in paranormal, fantasy, steampunk & gaslamp subgenres, and sometimes delves into urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction. Her characters are often quirky, sometimes cranky, but they all woman-up and get the job done while their partners ensure they survive with all their bits and bobs attached.
A history enthusiast and word dabbler most of her life, she enjoys exploring ‘beyond-the-everyday’ and the ‘time-before-now’, discovering relationship threads weaving individuals through time and place. She’s rarely seen without flashy notebooks and colourful pens.
Magnus is a pilot, agent, grumpy looking viking and a polar bear shifter. Ana is an uptight agent with the skills of mind reading/ astral projection, recovering from a loss, but the agency needs her skills so she's called in and set on a dangerous mission to tackle a trafficking ring. At first meeting Magnus and Ana's personalities clash, but they are forced to work together for the sake of the mission and begin to grow closer with an intense attraction. More threats are uncovered the deeper they delve into the mission and it turns out several lives are at stake including Magnus's family. With a fake marriage, spy mission, ghostly connections, and all round action and suspense, this is a fast paced adventure with some steamy romance, and a bunch of paranormal shifters. I also liked how characters from the previous stories were woven in too as they all work together as a team.
I liked this book but would actually rate it closer to 3.5-3.75 as I feel you need to read the other books in the series to get a handle on the players first. Ana and Magnus don't think they could be more different. He is a powerful take charge bear shifter and she is healing from a trauma. Who would have thought a trauma could be helpful in the book.
The heart of the book takes place in Prince's Magnus's first home with old and new enemies colliding with old and new friends to stop something horrific. Human trafficking is always cringeworthy but the author handled the subject with grace and style. She also spun human trafficking differently than I have ever read it before so that made the book interesting.
Magnus was a great character from the beginning but Jodi had her work cut out for her from the start because Ana started out wimpy and unlikable. As her relationship with Magnus grew, she found her inner goddess and strength she was unaware she had to help save the day.
The polar bear island nation sounded interesting, at least after it got wifi. The descriptions were very well done and you did feel at times like you were transported to a powerful stronghold fighting true evil.
The book introduced a new world of shifters. Ocean shifters and polar bears are unique. I think that was one of the best parts of the book, the shifters weren't the typical meaning there strengths and weakness were different. The book is completely original and worth the read. I just grabbed copies of the first 2 books in this line as well.
My recommendation would be to read the books in order. I struggled with keeping track of the GPSA membership but had I read the other books first that may not have been an issue.

I haven't read book 1 or 2 but this is mostly a standalone story. I could tell I would enjoy knowing the backstories for the other characters but it didn't distract from Ana and Magnus's story. There is a human trafficking ring that Ana and Magnus are working with their teams to break it and capture those involved in running it. Ana develops her skills more during this story. Can Magnus and Ana open themselves to a future together despite all their differences?.

Ana gets a call in the middle of the night that her expertise is needed in Iceland and to get on a private plane. The pilot of the plane is GPSA agent Magnus Bjornson; these two get off to a rocky start, but sparks of attraction flare. They’re on a difficult mission to stop human and paranormal traffickers, but it’s dangerous and Magnus has to return to his home from which he was banished. I loved all the action in this story, and I was a huge fan of the steam the Ana and Magnus generated together. A great story, packed with intrigue and action.
This third installment of the series was well written and kept me entertained from start to finish. The characters were endearing while the story line was engaging. I can't wait to see what Jodi Kendrick has in store for us next.
