By the time families consider an intervention, they are highly frustrated and upset after trying everything to get a loved one to change. The days before making a call for an intervention are always hectic. It’s never easy and always comes after being pushed over the proverbial edge. An intervention is a formal process, replacing chaos with structure and careful planning. To achieve lasting recovery, plans need to be made to support the individual. An intervention is not just about the first step, “get them into rehab”, a successful intervention plans before, during and after treatment. We understand that spending a month in rehabilitation is just the beginning of a life in recovery. Within that month, it is imperative for families to have a plan in place to support long-term recovery. We have helped many families explore treatment options and can conclude that a good plan can take many forms – it just needs to be something that the person in recovery will stick to. A good plan is comprised of specific components that we will discuss in further detail throughout the guide, but some of the foundational elements include post- treatment housing, suitable programs, and financial support, if necessary. Families that come together during the intervention process are poised for a successful healing journey. With the shared mission of helping their loved one, it is common for relatives to unite and shift into healthier relationship dynamics for the sake of the family. Animosity between exes softens, worry for adult children subsides, and old grudges are settled. As families undergo the intervention process together, meeting regularly and rallying around the success of treatment, they simultaneously rebuild a solid foundation for each other to rely on.
