Rate this book
A boy with a bottomless stomach and a lonely widow with room at her dinner table serve up a heaping helping of secret happiness in this delightful foodie rom-com!

A trip home to visit her parents sees Shuko return home with her arms full...of noodles?! Though eating her way through them is usually a challenge, Shuko now has Yamato and his monster appetite to help her out! It's a good thing too because Yamato's mom is also looking to shore up Shuko's pantry with still more food in thanks for feeding her son!

Filling his belly, however, might be the least of Shohei's problems when he loses his house key after a late-night practice and ends up spending the night at Shuko's! Will he survive the unexpected close quarters with his dignity intact?!

She cooks. He eats. It continues.

This is turning into one of those manga that I do rather enjoy, but isn’t doing anything especially different each volume. The menu changes, but little else, small tweaks occur here and there, but the formula is set.

And that’s okay, it’s a good formula. We get the usual split of food chapters and then Sakura shows up for a visit, Rui gets her hopes up then dashed then up again, lord she’s annoying, and Yamato’s mom pays a visit.

The food parts are still fun, feeding Yamato brings such joy to Shuko’s life that it’s hard to overlook the ‘cooking as therapy’ aspect of the story. Then again, when Yamato ends up staying the night, there’s a briefly melancholic glimpse of Shuko’s old life (not to mention a hint that Yamato reminds her of her husband, which may or may not go anywhere).

Sakura and Shuko go to town on a giant crop of sweet potatoes and that’s a fun little diversion; there’s much more of an instructional aspect here because Sakura is young and learning her way around the kitchen, which is a nice touch.

Rui is a twerp still, but her non-date with Yamato kind of works because, as much as she thinks he completely ignores her, the truth is that he is aware of all her hard work and effort. He just doesn’t have any romantic interest in her.

Yamato’s mom provides the most unique chapter just because we rarely hear much about her. It gives insight on both her and Yamato, plus lets Shuko be adored by somebody else. She doesn’t even have to work hard at it.

The little touches are what wins the day here. These are very pleasant characters to spend time with (and Rui) and it tweaks things just enough to make it not feel stale. It may be moving slowly, but it moves along at its own pace and it feels more assured than drawn out. The art is oddly charming and I loved little moments like Shuko tapping her foot in excitement.

There are some genuinely good jokes in here too. The somen noodles section has a very silly punchline and the book ends with a hilarious omake of Rui’s friend Ritsuko, whose version of a particular set of events is given a whole new light when the truth comes out.

3.5 stars - it’s not blowing me away, but it’s better than a mere three stars would suggest, so we’ll round this back up. I always enjoy this series, it’s mostly a question of just how much, and this one was good stuff.

I could do with a little less fan service but I enjoy this story. I want a flashback chapter to Shuko’s marriage

What. Rui cant play baseball anymore herself because she discovered she likes Yamato better than baseball?? How stupid is that?

TBH, I don’t think Yamato is a consistent character. It mentioned early on that baseball is just a sport to him and he doesn’t really consider it his life or seem interested in striving particularly hard to go to the pros. If he thinks like that, I would expect him to stall out in baseball, since talent can only go so far if you don’t have the passion. But he does work harder than most, and it seems he is ambitious about baseball after all. Here we have his mom talking about how he is good at athletics in general, and he only focused on baseball because of Rui. Ehh.

HOLY SHIT, IT FINALLY HAPPENED! FIRST FIVE STAR RATING, BABY!!!!

But seriously, this is easily the best volume in the series so far. It was incredibly wholesome, the art was stellar, Rui wasn't a 100% creepy weirdo, Yamato's mom was great to finally meet, there was some drama that pushed Yamato towards character growth, everything was just great. This is what happens when you focus on your strengths and leave all the cringey, problematic bullshit out. You get top-tier wholesome slice-of-life goodness that bolstered my love for this series.

Please Satomi U, please please please, keep this up!

This volume didn't do too much. It was nice to meet Yamada's mother and Sakura gets another chapter that was cute. Overall, the story isn't moving forward much and things are starting to become stagnant. The preview for volume 7 showed some promise so I hope that things pick up a little bit.

Cute, but also don't know if I'm going to continue - it keeps leaning so heavily into the romance of an adult woman feeding a high school boy, but also all of their interactions are so about him as a son-surrogate; I don't really trust that this knows the difference.
