1/6: The Graphic Novel asks and answers the question: what if the January 6, 2021 Insurrection had been successful? In an entertaining, chilling, and sometimes humorous form, 1/6 illustrates how close we came to authoritarian rule in the United States, demonstrating how strategic disinformation, racial and religious bigotry, and cynical political ambition convinced millions of ordinary Americans to reject cherished constitutional values and support violent sedition. Harvard Law School Professor Alan Jenkins and New York Times bestselling graphic novelist Gan Golan have teamed up with veteran comic book artist Will Rosado to depict, in chilling detail, what the Insurrectionists and their allies had planned on that day, the threats to our democracy that remain, and what can be done about it. Colorist Lee Loughridge and Letterer Tom Orzechowski round out the creative team, with additional art by Shawn Martinbrough, Jamal Igle, Alex Albadree, and others.
1/6 and its accompanying Education and Action guide were developed under the auspices of the Western States Center, a nonprofit organization that works with communities and organizations to build movements, develop leaders, shift culture, and defend democracy.
Beautifully drawn imaginative graphic novel. This is a dystopian look at a not so far fetched future of the US under a dictatorship. Interesting characters. Can’t wait to read the next one.
This beautifully illustrated graphic novel is hard to read because it vividly brings back memories of watching the TV on that terrible day. If the rioters and their leader had succeeded, this fictional story might well be our reality. I hope the creators of “1/6” can help all true Americans preserve our democracy by ensuring that we never forget how important it is for all of us to be aware of the dangers that still exist.
I'm not only glad this graphic novel is happening, but I'm also glad they're going to be publishing an action guide alongside it on how to combat white nationalism in your local communities.
The reader is either going to love this book or they are going to hate it. There is not going to be any middle ground.
It makes the assumption that the January 6 uprising was successful. There's an example of a news station shut down because it doesn't toe the party line which is the same thing which happened on an episode of Babylon 5 where the real leader was murdered and the one who took his place became a dictator.
The whole thing is based on Trump becoming president again and passive propaganda and brainwashing at the same time every thing is done to silence his critics.
There are other indications of the revolts success. The Lincoln statue has a Confederate flag behind it. The revolt has now been renamed Independence Day. Supporters are yelling 'blood and soil' which was a motto used by Nazi Germany.
There is also an underground group doing what they can to oppose the ultra-right powers in the country.
So it's a 'what-if' story which is, in my opinion, very realistic and could become a reality in this country if things don't change.
Seemed topical with the news coming out of Brazil and I wanted a little light reading. I doubt this will change minds at all especially since it is close enough to the worst case scenario if the January 6th insurrection succeeded. Well, maybe not the worst case scenario... I can think of worse and that is not horribly difficult to consider. One important note is that perhaps calling it "The Graphic Novel" is misleading. It is not a self-contained story with more issues to come. Naming it "1/6: The Miniseries" would be more appropriate.
It feels a little early to leave an accurate review from the first issue alone, but I like the premise of the comic and believe the story to come could be very good.
The imagery included in this issue was jarring and toed the line between being ludicrous yet entirely possible, or even likely as an understanding of history (or present reality for that matter) and the ability to think critically is clearly lost on the people who tried to overthrow the government.
I’m looking forward to future issues to see where exactly this series goes.
A leftistTurner Diary. So heavy with anti screen of American and its people
So slanted it’s humorous in the most stupid view of the world I’ve seen since the Turner Diaries. If the right wanted it .It would have. I saw no weapons except for the Police. Who shot dead a American Veteran.Murder her. So get real. I hope you can get a real slant on 1/6.where American began he slide into the Brandon Clown world.
Could Jan 6th have become "Independence Day" if the insurrection has succeeded? Could Antifa have been blamed for hanging VP Pence? Could honest news reports have been outlawed, and reporters deemed "traitors" and summarily shot to death? Could MAGA supporters now be in charge of "OUR Country"? Read this GN for a possible scenario...
This was a typical first issue of a what I hope is a miniseries instead of a series. It introduced major characters and set up the story. It has me hooked and I anxiously await the publication of the whole set so I can read them all at once. Its easy to see this in the medium of video.
I really did enjoy this first issue, but I do kind of wish we could have gotten the first 2 issues at one time. The art and writing are both very strong.
I picked this up as a suggestion when I mentioned We Stand on Guard to someone a few days back and am glad I did.
Good graphic novel focusing on a disturbing alternate reality. It is one point of view that tries to answer the question, what if? I enjoy graphic novels, especially since we see emotion on characters' faces and in their body language. It is terrifying to read one person's perspective of what might have been. Scary good.
Interesting and insightful look into what might have happened if it was successful. The panels are well drawn with many references to events at the time. The riding in the characters are properly set up to provide a multi point of view response to the situation. I'm very interested in finding out what happened to that man's son.
A sadly prophetic alternate future in which the wingnuts succeeded and were lionized. Stay tuned for more. How will this incorporate what we know from the actual commission report?
Lol, I have to say the libs' response to 1/6 probably equals the deranged sanctimony of the US's response to 9/11, but at least the 1/6 response hasn't equaled the bodycount that followed 9/11 in middle eastern countries
What is the 1/6 Insurrection had been successful? This comic book explores that idea. It is not as far-fetched as some might think. A few little differences and that day could have ended quuite differently.
A “good” first taste. I only say “good” because it feels quite plausible even as it looks ridiculous, is hardly the best of all possible worlds but all said, makes me want to read more.
A well written counterfactual graphic novel. A very clever premise done well with great art. The physical comic is a smaller than I was expecting but the substance is great.
Thought-provoking. The scary part is what has come to pass in reality, although when this story was created, I don't think they knew Trump would get re-elected
This graphic novel was entirely a fluke read. I was at work one day and it showed up in our library mail; my boss had suggested I read it (not that we are purchasing it for the library, but just for fun) and give feedback to her. Obviously this is historical fiction, bordering on some non-fictional events, but that being said, I can't wait until the other remaining issues come out because I really want to see how this ends!
It's a spin on the January 6th Riot of 2021, telling it through the eyes of resistance leaders who lost their country to the extremist MAGA forces, and what the world could possibly look like if the Riot that day would have tipped in favor of the extremists' views. It is very well thought up, and the graphics are amazing!
No matter what you think politically, I think it is a great read, and really hits home emotionally!
I actually read this back in January and it is notable for returning me to the world of graphic novels and realizing I could catalog them on Goodreads. It is also a heck of a good piece of speculative fiction and well-researched. But where o where is Issue #2? *Drums fingers on tabletop*
And here's a thought to the writers: had the attack of 1/6 succeeded, what would have been the fate of COVID vax in Spring 2021, and how would our country handle the supply chain crunch and global inflation? Twitter would have never had a chance to ban Trump but would it and other social media sites - which have to obey international laws - have been censored and weaponized in the US a la Saudi Arabia and China? It would be great to see some basic quality of life for ordinary folk scenes.
This was a great indie comic and alternate history story of what would life look like had the 1/6 insurrection been successful. Issue one paints a realistic and terrifying view of what life in the United States would look like. If you aren’t a fan of graphic fiction and comics but want to try this does a great job of bridging the gap between prose and graphic fiction. The art really helps drive home the emotions of all the characters and helps keep you grounded in reality. Highly recommend this to readers anywhere.
