Demon Reign

Rate this book
What can I do when a demon makes me question everything I believe?
Marked at birth, I have spent my life in service to the temple, where the Priestess captures and

controls demons to keep others safe. Determined to prove myself, I am inexplicably drawn to Dagon, a demonic being so powerful he was worshiped as a God.

An attack on the temple leads to a revelation—a way to close the gates of hell and banish all demons from the mortal plane, but my journey with Dagon is leading me to more questions than answers and feelings I do not know how to control.

How am I to do what I have set out to do if it will mean losing him? How can I banish all demons when there is one holding onto my heart?

So... I'm not certain if I read an ARC, as according to the release date here on Goodreads, but I got this as a bookfunnel freebie on a monster romance tweet that was going around like a month ago.

This... I am going to try to be charitable for once, and not even star rate it. This did not read as ready for publication, even as an indie. Formatting, the quality of the writing, lack of editing... Mm. I will leave it there.

Demon Reign is DW Sheneman’s debut novel and is the first book in the Apocalypse Prophecy series. It does end on a cliffhanger, but that just pumps you up for book 2. It has major Inuyasha vibes. I loved Dagon’s unapologetic attitude and crudeness.

Spice level (1-5): 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Jazzera has trained as a priestess with very strict rules since she was a child. She was born with a mark that distinguishes her from the other priestesses. She wants to be like the others and goes to capture her own demon to control. Instead of catching a low level demon, she catches a Demon Lord named Dagon. Little did she know that catching Dagon would turn her life upside down. He challenges everything she was told to believe. When the temple is attacked by demons, Jazzera, Dagon and Ermek, her Demon Slayer that has sworn to protect her, go on a journey to attempt to send all demons back to Hell. Once that happens Dagon wouldn’t be able to stay in the mortal realm. Can Jazzera continue with their plan even if it means loosing the demon she’s starting to love?

I would recommend Demon Reign to anyone who enjoys a good demon romance with a dystopian setting. This book does contain some MM action on page and off. If that’s not your cup of tea you can skip those bits. Read the trigger warnings. This book does contain misogyny, mentions of s assault, attempted assault, gore, etc. To fans of demon romances with an oriental feel, this one is for you!

Warning: Reading Demon Reign may make you grateful you live in the 21st century. May make you want to capture your own Demon Lord. May make you not like the color red. May make you want to go to the Heathen country. May make you want Dagon as your BBF. May make you cautious of who you befriend. May make you open your eyes to the truth in front of your face. May make you want to go on an adventure with a hot demon. Read responsibly.

A delicious demon romance

This author caught my attention on tik tok with her super interesting videos explaining the lore and history of many mythological creatures from around the world. I can tell that she applied her research in writing this book. This demon romance story is told from three points of view: Jazzera a priestess who captures a demon lord and starts off on a quest to send all the demons back to hell and lock the gates forever; Ermek, her close friend and demon slayer who is sworn to protect her; and Dagon the delicious, mischievous, and morally grey demon lord captured by Jazzera who ends up turning her world upside down. I loved so many things about this story: 1) how well-crafted the characters are and their transformation from who they are at the start of the book and who they become by the end. 2) the vivid descriptions of the different scenes where this story takes place. Whether in a religious compound or futuristic dystopian society or the depths of hell, the author puts you right there in those places while keeping the action at an entertaining pace 3) as fun as the book is to read, there is also social commentary regarding some of the hypocrisy in our society.
I like that the author wraps up this first adventure in this book while in the last chapter setting up the next adventure to be covered in the second book of the series. Finally, please be aware of the content disclosures/trigger warnings. Although I'm not an expert and sometimes this could be subjective, I would rate the spice level at 3 peppers and it includes M/M.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t sure if I would like this book. I had never read anything by this author before so went in with no expectations either way. I loved it. I read in one afternoon as I didn’t want to put down. It didn’t disappoint from start to finish.

The story had depth and meaning behind it , not just fuel for the imagination. The story was a love story for 3 characters , but also a story of discovery for the characters. The main characters were likeable and multi-faceted.

Would recommend and I can’t wait for more from this author.

WARNING LOTS OF SPICY SCENES

Jazzera’s whole life gets turned upside down when she starts seeing through some of the lies and hypocrisy she’s been groomed to accept and as she starts falling for a sexy Demon Lord.
Set in the future, society has been divided between extremists who have reverted to living what they deem to be considered the Old Testament rules, and those who are called “Heathens”. The gates to hell have been open two hundred years, letting loose thousands of demons who have been terrorizing earth. On a quest to close the gates and save humanity, Jazzera learns nothing she was made to believe is right, and as long as you’re a good person, it doesn’t matter who you love, but does it still apply if the one you’re falling for is a demon?
I loved the setting, the slow deconstruction of beliefs, and the gradual choosing to change how she views the world and those she cares about. Excited for the next book!!

A Journey to Remember

I quite enjoyed this book. I can't say that I didn't have any expectations when I first started reading this book because I had been watching the author's posts on TT. I was intrigued and put it on my TBR, downloading it to my Kindle.

I didn't get to reading it right away because I had a few other books I was currently reading.  However, I joined an author exchange to help support other authors and I was paired with D.W. Sheneman.  A pleasant surprise.

I read to Chapter 21 before I just had to reach out and let her know I had started reading her book and how much I was enjoying it.

My favorite parts were Dagon's  sarcastic, modern-day whips and digs. This book is well written and I love that it has a fresh unique way of keeping the characters true to their nature. I do have to say I didn't particularly enjoy the journey through hell and I actually said out loud "yuck" when I visualized it in my head... but, what else would you expect? They are literally in hell.

Character development flowed well.  Storyline had me reading, into the night, and well after I should have gone to bed. My mind obviously didn't want to let it go, even after I put it down, and while I slept it made an appearance in my dreams.

Well done! That doesn't happen often.

Okay so I am in love with Dagon. Utterly obsessed! I found this book on Facebook where the author said the MMC has Deadpool vibes. It was an insta-buy. She was right! Omg I cracked up at some of the crazy things that came out of his mouth. There was a scene where the song Pumped up kicks is mentioned and I lost it! My husband looked at me weird like WTF is going on?
Anyway, I loved how the author stayed true to the characters throughout the entire book. I wanted to yell at the FMC several times, but not because she was annoying. She's pretty brain washed and has a hard time letting go of her beliefs. As someone who doesn't care for religion at all I really loved how this author went about it. The lore was very unique in the book. I am also thus forth refer to the grim reaper as "daddy death"
Also, Hell was cool. I really liked it being shown as an "ever changing planet" verses the whole nine rings thing.
Anyway, great book!

Love the pansexual rep! There simply isn't enough in books these days. My husband told me I needed to read this. As a proud pansexual I can say I was very pleased with all spicy scenes... Except the one in the bolder... He didn't even spit on it lmao. But I forgive it because I found out this is the authors debut and in this world what was he really going to use?
However, Dagon is awesome! He reminds me of a very twisted version of Deadpool. Usually I get turned off when songs are put into books but the use of Pumped up Kicks was epic!! And then the twist at the end! I couldn't believe it. I almost threw the book 🤣 I was about to be so mad!
The book was great and I really think people who suffer from religious trauma like myself should give this a try. I really liked the take on angels, demons, and religion in general.

Great world building, overall enjoyable read

Absolutely loved this book, great futuristic religious dystopia romance. It loses one star because it didn't feel like there was any transition in the love aspect. It felt sudden, like they hated eachother then all of a sudden they loved eachother. Outside of that, world was amazing, characters were real and layered, and I want to read more.

Please be sure to check triggers before reading. While I will admit this book had a few grammar errors, I found I really enjoyed the story. The romance was fun, between the priestess and Dagon. This book took me on a journey and I hope book 2 will be just as fun.

Great story

Could have used better editing, but the story was good, and the characters mostly likeable and interesting. Would recommend to those who aren't offended by adult situations. I look forward to the next book.

I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review, and here are my thoughts on it. This writer does a good job of keeping her characters identifiable in both personality and interaction throughout the story. I liked the banter between the characters and found that the more you read, the better the relationship developed. The only thing that I found difficult was the pacing in certain parts of the book. Some scenes were just too lengthy for me. As well as, it did take several chapters before things started to heat up in terms of plot. The steamy scenes are great, and I would warn some bashful readers to read the warnings on this before diving in. Other than that, it was a good read. 👍
