Alice Reed goes for a run in the Swiss Alps when she spots a man standing on a bridge over the river Lorie looking forlorn. Manfred wants to end his life as he can’t live with who he is and what he has done.

Manfred feels fate chose Alice to save him and they have a connection. If I was Alice I would be wishing I had carried on with my run and that being a Good Samaritan is not all it’s cut out to be. Manfred becomes obsessed with Alice but the police and her husband do not take her seriously, so Alice has to take fate into her own hands!!

There is a Chinese proverb, "If you save a life, you are responsible for that life." Well after reading this chilling novel turning the other cheek might be the safest option!!

Unfortunately, this book was a waste of time for me. Extremely unlikeable main character and some very strange and unbelievably dumb choices made by her as well. Alice seems to change her personality about a third into the book. So weird, but I won't rehash the entire story line-it is all in the book blurb. I must admit I am very surprised to see so many 4 and 5 star reviews. I honestly would not recommend this book as a psychological thriller or as a suspenseful mystery. While Alice is being stalked and harassed noone believes her and the police find her offensive (because she is a "foreigner" -she does not report the man who she once saved from committing suicide is on her property and that items are missing to the police though. She does not tell her husband Simon about his escalatingly creepy behavior either supposedly because he is stressed out from his job. What? Once your family is in danger I think it is okay to alert your husband and other child about a psycho with mental health issues may possibly harm them if you care about them as much as you say you do. The fact the story was set in Switzerland made it even more offputting. The ending left me with my mouth hanging open in disbelief and dissatisfaction-why did I finish reading this?

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and give an honest review.

Wow what a debut this is for Louise Mangos! A dark and gripping thriller that has a truly terrifying premise in that by saving a man’s life, Alice Reed has actually put her own life and family in danger. Whilst out jogging one morning Alice sees a man about to throw himself off a bridge until he is talked down by Alice who then takes him to hospital to get the psychiatric help he so obviously needs. But Manfred immediately feels a connection to his rescuer that unsurprisingly isn’t reciprocated by Alice! She then has to proactively protect the family life she has worked so hard to maintain since the family’s move to Switzerland from the UK. And unfortunately, things are about to get a lot worse….

What worked so well for me here was how the setting of this novel played such a large part in how the storyline unfolded. In this worrying time where the British abroad are concerned about their rights after Brexit, this was a timely look at how living in a foreign country can work incredibly well until unexpected problems occur. Although Alice had tried hard to fit in with the local community, there were still language problems that didn’t help when she needed the support of the local authorities. Cultural differences and the language barrier apart, Alice also had to deal with a very determined stalker who’s obsessive nature was so convincing that even Alice’s own family started to doubt her. And that’s when Alice realised that desperate measures would need to be taken.

Louise Mangos slowly built up the tension by setting the scene perfectly in the lead up to Alice meeting Manfred. I felt as though I was running alongside Alice during her regular morning jog and experienced her terror as she came across the suicide attempt. And her frustration was palpable as her inability to shake off Manfred continued to affect all aspects of her life in Switzerland.

Strangers On A Bridge didn’t take the easy path towards its conclusion and that was another factor in my enjoyment. It followed an unexpected route towards an even more unexpected ending but after I had finished it, I realised that it fitted the book perfectly.

An insightful, self assured and thought provoking debut!

Another one-sitting read for me! This was such an interesting concept: what if you eventually realized you shouldn't have interfered in a suicide? Alice is out running when she comes across a man about to jump off a bridge;she intervenes and saves him from death. But little does she know that his gratitude will turn into obsession as he begins to stalk her believing they are meant to be together. Of course she is unnerved and fears for herself and her family but the Swiss police aren't interested as stalkers are not at all common and she has little proof. Things spiral out of control as she tries to "fix" things herself and lies to her husband and sons thinking she can take care of things. Her numerous mistakes and secrets were frustrating to me, but I guess since I've never been stalked, I have no idea how I might respond. Plus, I love a good flawed character as it just reminds us that life is often messy! I also loved the descriptions of Switzerland and the scenery. Overall, this was a great thriller!

I found STRANGERS ON A BRIDGE compelling for multiple reasons. The cover, of course, is intriguing. The author’s gorgeous descriptions of rural Switzerland are vivid and fresh. And the concept of what happens when “saving” someone goes horribly wrong hooked me from the start. As well-plotted and high anxiety inducing as a great Hitchcock flick. 5 stars.

A hearty hat tip to the author, HQ Digital and NetGalley and for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

I enjoyed this book and the family drama that ensued in the story. Alice goes for her usual morning jog and sees something while jogging past a bridge. A man standing there who appears to be ready to jump. Determined to see what was going on and to save a man’s life, Alice decides to approach him and talk him down from the bridge. Alice manages to save the man from suicide, but then he becomes obsessed with her.

The man’s life she saved goes by the name Manfred. He is convinced that they crossed paths for a reason and believes it to be destiny. He is convinced this means they are meant to be together and he tries to convince her of this. He follows her and her family, and stalks them. It creeps Alice and her family out, and Alice approaches him many times, but he still doesn’t seem to get the message. Manfred continues to attempt to convince Alice they are destined to be together.

Alice becomes frustrated with Manfred’s continuous advances, and tries to take matters into her own hands. The police don’t take her seriously, neither does her husband, and it seems Alice has nowhere to turn. Determined to protect her family, she is desperate.

Alice was a complex character. She loved her family, her husband and their two sons, and was kind and caring. Afterall, she did save a man from jumping to his death. She made some bad decisions in this novel, and sometimes I didn’t agree with her and her decisions, but it added to the suspense and build up of the story. Overall, an enjoyable read.

Will Alice be able to convince Manfred to stop stalking her and her family and leave her alone? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

After relocating to Switzerland Alice Reed is currently on her daily run through the peaceful alps. When she comes across a man on a bridge ready to take his own life. She stops him from committing suicide. His name is Manfred a local businessman. She then offers to take him to the local police station and then the hospital, but, before she does she brings him home to get changed and get her car. The man is very grateful and she leaves him at the hospital.
She goes home and tells her family and they think that’s the end of the matter. But after the incident she starts to get weird phone calls and keeps meeting up with Manfred or is he stalking her?
I read the Blurb of this story and other reviews which this seemed intriguing but for me personally I didn’t think this was for me. The story was mainly about her day to day life, her family and her running, nothing like a gripping addictive read that a Psychological thriller should be. I was rather bored of it all. I DNF this book at 30%.

This was a debut! Wow! What a way to introduce yourself to the world!

Alice saves a man. She talks him off the bridge, tries to get him help and get back on with her life after doing a good deed. Should be the end of it shouldn’t it…..wrong! First, I want to say it was an amazing thing she did, saving Manfred but her actions after….welll she needed a bit of a harsh word or two said to her, for own stupidity.

Manfred sees a connection to Alice, that she does not reciprocate. The stalker tendencies magnify, and at times it was damn right frightening. As horrible as this sounds, it makes you question whether she should have saved him and maybe she should have just carried on running. He is just so creepy and his behaviour just does not help the situation, and just fuels to reinforce the isolation of Alice.

This was the second book I have read recently where it is a British woman is isolated in a foreign country and with a language barrier despite her trying to overcome this. You really can feel the isolation in this book, the locals turn their backs on Alice, as she made an error once with her children and walking them to school – dramatic much, her husband is away on his business trips and her two boys are growing up busy with their own lives. All of this, Manfred plays upon, the man she saved, and he takes it to the limits where her own family begin to doubt her.

The tension in this book is papable, and I was gripped, swiping quicker and quicker on the Kindle to get to the next page, to see where we would go with this story. The description of the scenery and location were breathtaking and beautiful, I would love to go for a run through the woods and bridge that Alice does……I may run with my eyes closed though.

The gorgeous, patient writing and strong sense of place made me love this book. It slowly swept me up in the story, one where the characters were real, flawed and absorbing. This is a very strong debut, and I definitely look forward to what Louise Mangos writes next.

I know Louise Mangos through her flash fiction (go on, look up some of her short-short stories, folks!), and I couldn't wait to get my hands on her first novel. Strangers on a Bridge did not disappoint.

Written in the first person from the main character's point of view, this book is a long, slow burn, which is just how I like my thrillers to be. Alice, a wife and mother who's been struggling to fit in as an ex-pat in a small Swiss village, does what many of us would do when confronted with a fellow human in crisis: she helps. And then she makes mistakes, small mistakes, one after the other.

Mangos does an exceptional job getting Alice in trouble, and keeping her there. Fair warning: there aren't a lot of bells and whistles in this book--no terrorist plots to destroy the world, no governmental schemes, no crash-bang-boom special effects. But that's what makes it such a deliciously frightening read, the fact that everything seems so normal. What happens to Alice, from the creepy stalking to the degradation of her family relationships to the way she's treated by her community, could happen to any of us.

There are times when I found myself questioning Alice's judgement, when I said out loud "No, honey! Don't do that." That's not to say her choices are unbelievable--I could see myself doing the same thing because Mangos has a real talent for piling one straw after the other on the proverbial camel's back. Independently, Alice's actions aren't over the top. Put together, they weave a terrifying scenario of powerlessness. Until, of course, Alice makes a different decision...

Highly recommended for its readability and excellent plotting. I would have buzzed through this one in a day if I'd had the free time!

A creepy and very likely premise which when you think about it could happen to anyone. You’re having a nice jog/walk and then you find someone about to hurl themselves off a bridge so you talk them down. But then they wont leave you..and want to be in your life...

Take that and put it into Switzerland, a country known for its strict laws on behaviour and cultural norms, remote Switzerland no less, with all the loneliness, claustrophobia and lack of support system that could entail...with the stunning scenery as the backdrop.... sets up quite the premise. Alice, the main character who finds the man on the bridge is an expat and so an outsider from the start

I don’t know how Switzerland deals with stalking and crimes of this nature but I hope this book isn’t true to life. Having said that, I wasn’t quite sure about Alice. Would you do what she did? Talking someone off a bridge is one thing, but continuing to do things despite a sense of unease and fear for her life? Not sure about some of that. There is a lot of inward thinking and that is realistic to a stalking victim I would think- over analysing the simplest of events, the thought you might be going crazy etc...

I'd known someone who committed suicide and this coloured my reading of the book at first but having stood back and considered my thoughts, I've decided the premise and the setting create a book that haunts in many ways and offers a lot for book clubs!

Strangers on a Bridge is a tale of obsession and betrayal, set in the Swiss Alps. I thought the descriptions of the setting were absolutely beautiful, although the character of Alice was extremely difficult to relate to, as she prevaricated so much and repeatedly made terrible decisions, given that she was being stalked. I found it difficult to fully understand the reasons why Alice didn't want to discuss her stalker, Manfred, with Simon, her own husband, when he was at home. Simon, I believe, was not supportive enough of her and the difficult situation the whole family found themselves in as a result of Alice's actions, on the occasions when his wife let him into her mind.

Later on, I found Alice's blossoming relationship with Manfred's son, Gerry a little far-fetched, as well as her acceptance of his promises to protect her.

I really enjoyed this book and I thought it was very well written, however, for me, it is less of a suspenseful thriller and more of a contemporary fiction novel. It is still an extremely interesting read and a good debut. I am very much looking forward to reading Louise Mangos' next book.

Thanks to Netgalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own

I was lured into this read by the intriguing cover and the interesting premise. I am not going to sugarcoat it, I read the whole story and read the author's note and all I wanted was for all the characters(except Leon and Olivier) to jump off the bridge. I will freely admit that it's definitely a slow burn thriller but I felt it was terribly frustrating how several characters reacted. And the last bit of the novel...dear ancient cats of Egypt....just nope!

So I am crowning this one with a 1 star(not a crown I tote out often) for the way it made me want to ogle it with the evil eye.

A page turner, definitely!

I couldn't wait to finished my read, to see what happens. It was frustrating as hell, reading the protagonist's behaviour, but still, I couldn't judge her too harshly as I have no experience in the matter. We all claim we will know what to do when faced with such unusual circumstances, but truthfully we will only know when we face it.

Strangers On A Bridge by Louise Mangos is a compelling contemporary psychological thriller that draws the reader into the murky waters of the mind.
The story totally consumes as the reader sees how easy it is to travel the path from truth to lies. One little lie or omission doesn't really matter... or does it? The foundation for truth and trust has begun to be eroded.
To what lengths would you go to, to protect your family? Family first at all costs seems to be the motto of the tale.
Do the sins of the father visit the son? Would you react differently to the same situation if you could have a do-over?
The novel is written in the first person. We become intimately acquainted with a character, understanding some of the dilemmas faced. The fears and frustrations that rise up, as it appears to be a case of banging your head against a brick wall.
A chilling tale of naivety and a caring heart, where more than just the language is against you. Let the fear, lies and compassion invade your life for a few hours as you immerse yourself in this book.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

Alice Reed begins her early morning routine with a jog in the Swiss Alps. It’s her way of casting aside her concerns if only for a little while and letting her thoughts roam. The morning begins like any other but when Alice stumbles across a lone figure standing on the edge of the Tobel Bridge, she is struck with fear. Her instincts kick in and she immediately tries to help, only just managing to persuade him from his suicide attempt and avoid disaster.

But Alice’s single act of kindness curtails into a moment of regret that will bombard her for months to come. The man she saved forms a chilling obsession, believing he and Alice are meant to be together. As his clutch on her life clenches ever tighter, Alice’s own grasp on happiness begins to falter, the bond between her family begins to fray. And if Alice can’t find a way to stop him, she might not be able to piece it back together.

In the beginning, I think Alice feels somehow responsible for Manfred. What she thought was simple gratitude on his part for saving his life swiftly turns into something far more menacing. Manfred integrates himself into every aspect of her life. He follows her every move, walks her sons home, threatens to get her husband fired. He is intent in his endeavour to make Alice realise they should be together. His obsession grows darker with each day – he gave me a huge case of the chills.

As someone who has never visited Switzerland, I loved the setting and how this book gave me a glimpse at somewhere completely new. The setting is a big part of the book and author Louise Mangos offers her readers an authentic lens to view the scenery and culture through. Louise has kindly let me borrow some of her stunning pictures to add to this post. Below are a few of the beautiful views in Strangers On A Bridge!

Strangers On A Bridge is a tense, twisty book that will keep its readers gripped as soon as they start reading. The characters will march into your thoughts and prove to be completely unforgettable! I loved it!

Louise Mangos’ story tells of a woman who is trying to settle in a new country with her family; the authors knowledge and love is of Switzerland is evident as she describes the landscape and scenery beautifully giving the book a very real feeling which adds to the atmosphere of the story.

Alice is a runner it keeps her grounded. She’s out running when she finds Manfred on the bridge where she talks him out of committing suicide.

Alice, her family and friends think this was an act of compassion and think little more of it. Manfred agrees but sees much more into that act of kindness and he has some curious ways of showing his gratitude, his perspective is all wrong. Alice is worried, what’s happening is wrong, yet everything she does to sort it out hits a brick wall.

Alice is still getting used to the Swiss culture and way of life it is easy to empathise with her when she’s confronted with unfamiliar systems. The rigid guidelines that are part of what she confronts do seem curious. Manfred is clearly a danger, isn’t he? So why won’t anyone listen to her?

As we follow Alice through her ordeal we encounter twists in this tale that will take your breath away. You become so invested in what is happening. This is a story seemingly unbelievable and yet we know happens. Alice doesn’t always have a good sense of judgement. However, the Swiss system, to a non-Swiss, feels rigid, uncompromising and frustrating. This leaves Alice with only one course of action in her mind. What happens in the end will grip you and leave you shattered in this nightmarish tale of obsession.

With thanks to HarperCollins via NetGalley for an eARC of this book.

Strangers on a Bridge, the debut novel by Louise Mangos has a really intriguing premise which captured my imagination straight away. Whilst Alice Reed is taking her early morning run, she saves a man when she passes him on a bridge after becoming concerned that he might be about to commit suicide. But should she have saved him? After Alice pulls him back from the brink, she soon realises that she may have made a dreadful mistake.

Louise Mangos’ opening chapters sweep you into the story; we are on that run with Alice, we can feel her concern when she spots the troubled figure leaning over the bridge. It is done really well and Louise immediately sparked the intrigue. Already I was worried for Alice as she tries her best to help the man and when she takes him to her home, I was beginning to sense the warning vibes that she shouldn’t be doing this. This was what kept me reading on.

The descriptive techniques in Louise’s writing are outstanding. I loved the vivid scenery of the Swiss landscape and Louise’s writing gave it a very atmospheric feel. I have been to Switzerland once, staying in Zurich for a few days five years ago, and I could picture the mountainous terrain and the sprawling green vegetation really well. In her writing I think this is where Louise particularly excels.

The tension in this novel continues to build after the dramatic opening scenes. I could sense Alice’s frustration when very few people showed little interest in her claims, when she starts to experience problems with the man who she saved. I also thought that Louise explored her struggle at fitting into the local Swiss community well. At times I didn’t find her a particularly likable character but she kept me engaged and I ultimately wanted to find out what was going to happen to her and how she was going to solve the problems she was facing with so many obstacles in her way.

There were times when I felt that the book could perhaps have been a little pacier but overall I found the book a really enjoyable read. Louise is a really talented writer and I can’t wait to read more from her.

I wanted to read this book because it was set in Switzerland and the story sounded intriguing. I did enjoy learning about the German-Swiss and landmarks and customs. Overall the story was solid and I liked the pacing. I did have a difficult time liking the main character, Alice. Some of decisions and actions had me shaking my head, but I guess that is how the story needs to play out. It would definitely be a scary thing to go through being in a country away from home and having something happen and the authorities not believing you. I would like to read more of Louise Mangos’s novels and will put her on my reading list.

This brilliant book is set in Switzerland and tells the story of Alice, who lives a normal expat life with her family until she stops a stranger from jumping from a bridge. This good deed has shattering consequences, as Alice is sucked into a nightmare which threatens her children, marriage and happiness. I was immediately drawn into the story by the beautifully-written first person narrative and could not stop reading until the chilling conclusion. A must read!

What an excellent read! Alice Reed trying to balance life with her family and a man whom she was just trying to help out, but had other ideas. It's hard to say what you would do in this situation, so I suggest you read and determine if you would have done the same as she did.

Vividly written, this is a drama that makes you feel you're right there - experiencing the scenic surroundings and the emotions.

Though the plot could do with a bit more unpredictability, Strangers on a Bridge is pretty good for a first novel, and I'll look for more by Louise Mangos.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book as an arc. The premise of the story was intriguing, Alice saves Manfred from committing suicide, however, this decision comes back to haunt her. Manfred's gratitude soon turns into something more sinister and his behaviour becomes increasingly dangerous. When Alice realises that her children and her marriage are at risk, she receives no support from the authorities and decides she has to resolve matters on her own.
This book was very well written and I enjoyed the descriptive setting of Switzerland, however, I felt that Alice made some questionable decisions. Trying to tackle the problem without confiding in her husband Simon, who she seemed to have a fantastic relationship with, was quite unbelievable and she seemed to lurch from one crazy decision to another. There were a few surprises and the story certainly didn't turn out the way I expected!
I did enjoy this book and I would recommend it if you enjoy an unsettling psychological thriller.

She never should have saved him.
When Alice Reed goes on her normal morning jog in the peaceful Swiss Alps, she never expected to save a man from suicide. But she does. And she shouldn’t have.
Adamant they have an instant connection Manfred’s charming exterior grows darker and his obsession with Alice grows stronger.
In a country far from home, where the police don’t believe her, the locals don’t trust her and even her husband questions the truth about Manfred, Alice has nowhere to turn.
To what lengths will Alice go to protect herself and her family?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

We live in a world were we can trust nobody, and there is a saying that says no good deeds goes unpunished. When you think about saving someone´s life, you´d never think that same person will turn against you, but all three things above, has turn out to be true.
That´s a very insteresting background to a story, and it had a great potential to be terrifying. But, Alice´s choices felt kind of dumb. Like the person who always run up to the top floor of the building while running from the psycopath with an axe trying to kill everyone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

From my blog and instagram account - @livereadandprosper

Thank you netgalley and hq digital for this read for my honest review. I appreciate it!

Alice is out on a run when she sees a man named Manfred about to jump off a bridge. She convinces him to walk away with her and visit a nearby hospital. He is now forever grateful to her for saving his life, a little too grateful. He visits her children at school, moves down the street from her, and calls her often. It’s getting to be a little too much and now Alice is in fear for her family. Something happens to Manfred and has it become all Alice’s fault?

I thought this was a little predictable. I was expecting a few more twists than there really were. I also wasn’t a huge fan of Alice. I thought she made some pretty dumb decisions and it didn’t seem very realistic. I have very little background knowledge of Europe, especially Switzerland and German, and I felt that really hindered my understanding of the book. Other than that, the plot was intriguing. I probably wouldn’t read this one again.

She never should have saved him.

The debut novel from writer Louise Mangos, Strangers on a Bridge, has a very ominous story description that drew me in immediately. I have been provided an ARC by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. This was definitely on the top of my list to take a look at.

Strangers on a Bridge moves quickly, building both the scenic world around the characters as well as dropping you straight into the initial action moment described on the book cover. Mangos immediately starts world building by bringing you sensory into the world around her character, played dramatically (and wonderfully so) by the Swiss Alps.

MoMo’s Book Diary recommends “Strangers on a Bridge” as dark and gripping 4 star thriller.

This debut novel by Louise Mangos is set in the Swiss Alps and is nail-biting. The story strongly focuses on Alice and Manfred. Manfred is about to jump off a bridge and Alice spots him as she is running past….. something I like to think anyone would do – but then the story takes a twist!

This is a slow burner of a thriller where I found I could relate to Alice and, to a point, understand her actions – I fear I may react in a similar way – however the story at times becomes frustrating and somewhat unbelievable. I couldn’t understand the way some characters reacted but as a novel (and not real life) then this was very well written and a scary warning to everyone to be kind but protect yourself first!

I will be recommending this novel to friends and will be watching for any other releases.

Thanks to Louise Mangos, HQ Digital and Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this gripping novel.

Brilliant book! I was constantly being surprised by the events and was kept on my toes every turn of the page. Mangos writes in a way that makes you feel what the characters feel; the desperation, the fear and the passion. Such a great read with so much detail and description that draws you in - i read it in under a week!
