Book two of The Foresight Chronicles starts put after Annabelle, Roland, and Thomas have spent a number of years learning what it means to be a vampire from Eliza. They are doing well, but Roland finds it tedious to be living in a cabin, in the woods, outside of civilization. He is bored and yearns for adventure into the greater world. His desire for adventure arrives with the ship captain James Worthing. Although it is the adventure Roland has been craving, he learns there are different styles of adventures.

I received a copy of Dark Sails from the author for review purposes.

Plot

In Dark Sails the characters are separated, and we are presented with two main storylines that pick up a couple of decades after the close of book one, Dark Awakenings (you can read my review).

Roland believes he has lost his sister and the rest of his vampiric family of the cabin and heads to sea with Captain James Worthing. He discovers the good captain is not exactly who he claims to be. He is the captain of the Bloody Buccaneers, a crew of ruthless vampire pirates. Roland must carefully make his way around the crew to preserve himself, help others, and figure a plan where he can stop the Bloody Buccaneers and go search for his sister.

Annabelle, with the help of Thomas, leave New England and travel to London on the little information they have of where Roland may be. Their search introduces them to a group of orphaned child vampires and the two become teachers to the children of how to be vampires without becoming monsters while trying to learn more information about Roland. Here we get some quick tours of early London as they travel the city on their different tasks.

Characters

Roland and Annabelle Foresight have a prophesy tied to them. They don’t fully understand the prophesy, and neither does the reader. There is enough information and foreshadowing to know there is much more to their story. Both characters are young in physical age, and their change in aging process also means they remain very much in the same mental age as their physical appearance. This is also true for the rest of the vampire community, and possibly for more of the other-worldly beings we meet.

Style

The Foresight Chronicles are for readers who like stories that are easier to read without all of the descriptive language. The lead characters fit the expectations of the genre. The level of description is not overpowering and there is enough to get a full comprehension of the events taking place. The romance is hinted at and comes across as the budding relationship many want to see in a young relationship. The mood and language are well suited for younger readers.

Overall

Dark Sails is a compliment to the opening book to the series. I have read many second books in a series to find a story that doesn’t grab me because the author is filling a gap to get from the hook of the first book and on to the grand finale destined to come later. Dark Sails presented a solid story moving forward from the first book, provides a solid story on its own, and present a satisfying conclusion and hook to continue with the series.

I found Dark Sails an enjoyable read that read easily. The alternating storylines of Annabelle and Roland kept my interest as I went from chapter to chapter.

I recommend Dark Sails, The Foresight Chronicles, Book Two for people who enjoy young adult horror with a backdrop of historical settings. This would also be a good series for those who are interested in trying a horror story geared for easier reading.
